Spoiler-Free Review of “He Went That Way” on Demand: What did I just watch?

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Do you need a ride?”

He Went That Way released on demand on January 12th 2024. The crime thriller (loosely based on true events) stars Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto. It runs for an hour and thirty-five minutes.

Set in the 1960’s, a celebrity animal trainer and his chimpanzee, Spanky, offer a ride to a young stranger, but he quickly discovers that his passenger is actually a serial killer.

Here is the trailer:

He Went That Way is odd and uninspiring, allowing a chimpanzee to upstage the two leads of this strange thriller. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Beautifully shot.

The backdrop of this film was exceptionally well done and I thought the majority of it was aesthetically pleasing. My attention was drifting a lot during this film, but the cinematographer did a solid job here and I thought the road trip aspect was captured well.

Spanky steals the show…

I was honestly bored out of my mind watching this one, but who would have thought that a chimpanzee named Spanky would actually be the most entertaining? We had two well-versed leads here, but they were definitely upstaged…

The Cons:

Exhausting pacing with no real direction…

I think this goes to show that not every true crime story should be turned into a film. I actually found myself looking up these crimes during the movie, which was a lot more interesting than what I was watching. I just don’t think that it translated well at all in the film. The plot just felt really messy and choppy, never fully grabbing my attention.

The bond between our two main leads needed to be fleshed out more.

I think this would have made the movie a lot more interesting. Both characters needed to be fleshed out a lot more so that we would actually care about what happened to them. I think this film thought it accomplished that it, but it never truly did. There were a couple of worthy moments between them and more so between Spanky and them, but it never reached its level of potential.

So am I in or out?

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

He Went That Way never finds its direction, making this a strange watch overall that never resonated with me until the end credits.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Role Play” on Prime: Kaley Cuoco Shows off her Spy Game

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Do you love what you do?”

Role Play released on January 12th 2024 on Prime Video. The action comedy film stars Kaley Cuoco, David Oyelowo, Connie Nielsen, and Bill Nighy. It runs for approximately an hour and forty minutes.

When a young married couple tries to spice up their marriage, they wind up caught in a dangerous predicament as secrets are revealed about their past.

Here is the trailer:

Role Play attempts to channel Mr. & Mrs. Smith with two likable leads, but does it get lost within its own story? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Great chemistry between characters!

The strongest part of this film was the chemistry between Cuoco and Oyelowo’s characters. I thought they both did a great job and they elevated this film in a lot of ways with their performances.

I’m really hoping that Kaley Cuoco gets her chance to shine outside of The Flight Attendant because she really has great presence and I think she’d be fantastic in other films, but she’s being cast too frequently in these types of films.

Solid opening and ending.

I thought this film started off with a lot of potential. It’s a premise I’ve seen before, but I had strong hopes for it. The ending was decent as well, preventing this movie from drifting off into a total loss. There were a couple of fun twists and some stylish fight scenes to appreciate as well.

The Cons:

The middle of this film left a lot to be desired…

I really wanted to like this film for Kaley, but the middle was tough to get through. The sluggish pacing didn’t help and it lost its way. This film took itself too seriously and wasn’t original at all. I’m all for a female spy comedy thriller in any capacity, but this film needed to just embrace the simplicity of the premise and go with it, rather than trying to over-complicate things.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

I’m in for Kaley, but this film didn’t hold my attention and lost its way several times, making this one a struggle for me to get through. I really wish that they would stop trying to re-create The Flight Attendant for Kaley because she has a lot of range and I don’t want to see her get stuck in films that will never measure up to that…

That being said, if female spy thrillers are your jam, there’s enough here to check out to pass the time…

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Role Play in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Lift” on Netflix: A Heist Movie by the Numbers

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Nice doing business with you…”

Lift premiered on January 12th 2024 on Netflix. The action heist film stars Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Yoon-ji, Billy Magnussen, and Sam Worthington. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

A master thief is offered a job from an FBI agent, who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend, as he tries to pull off an almost impossible heist on an airplane with his team.

Here is the trailer:

Lift is basically Ocean’s Eleven without the finesse, relying on its cast and flashy effects to hold your attention. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Fun cast.

There are plenty of recognizable faces in this one to pull you into a mediocre film. That being said, I did enjoy the cast and thought that Gugu Mbatha-Raw stood out the most. She breathed the most life into her character and carried a lot of the team through some otherwise boring interactions.

The rest of the characters fit neatly into tropes, but I thought the cast did a decent enough job with what they were given.

Some of the fight scenes were enjoyable and I thought that the pacing improved once we actually got onto the plane, but it took a while to get there.

The Cons:

Lazy and uninspiring…

This movie wasn’t terrible, but there really wasn’t anything that memorable or unique going on here. It borrowed a lot from films like The Fast and the Furious, Ocean’s Eleven, and even Netflix’s Red Notice (although I liked that film a lot more).

I normally enjoy Kevin Hart in films, but this was a rough one for me. He needed some of his trademark humor to lighten things up. Everything just felt way too serious. This film needed to find the fun and embrace some silliness to make this one more enjoyable.

Everything just felt phoned in and lifeless, which was beyond frustrating. The movie wasn’t that long, but I felt like I was watching it forever and by the time I got to the end, I had already forgotten about what had I just watched…

So am I in or out?

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

Lift is a movie I’ve seen a million times before. There were some entertaining moments sprinkled in here and there, but I was expecting a lot more.
