Spoiler-Free Review of “The Order” Season 2 on Netflix: Surprisingly Addicting with Amazing Guest Stars

**This is a SPOILER-FREE review so feel free to read on!**

“It can’t be a secret society if outsiders know your secrets…”

The Order season two premiered on Netflix on June 18th 2020. It features 10 episodes (47-50 minutes in length) and it stars Jake Manley, Sarah Grey, Adam DiMarco, Katharine Isabelle, and Louriza Tronco.

Secret societies, dark magic rituals, and werewolves are back for season two, as we pick up right where we left off.

Season two is jam-packed with quite a lot, but are we ready to sign up for the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Deliciously dark magic rituals.

I thought that season two did an even better job than season one with bringing us into some serious dark magic rituals. Whether our favorite characters were performing a spell or summoning a demon, there were some cringe-worthy scenes that really allowed this series to embrace its supernatural horror qualities.

More please!

Villaness worthy Vera Stone!

I don’t know about you, but I would love to see a spin-off series featuring Vera and maybe we could throw in Mary Wardwell (Lilith) from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I think they would make a bewitching tag team.

Vera is the Villaness you love to hate, but we actually get to see several sides of her in season two, which added to the growth of her character. She’s strong, sexy, and a bad-ass magic practitioner you do not want to cross.

Her wardrobe is absolutely incredible as well!

Incredible Guest Stars!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Beverly Hills, 90210 fans will be beyond ecstatic when they see who appears on screen. I thought this was so much fun and I was cheering for these cameos/characters more than some of the main characters. The guest stars actually helped lighten up some of the heavy teen drama going on, which I appreciated. You won’t be disappointed!

The Cons:

The Order Season 2 Netflix 2
Images courtesy of Netflix

Too reliant on ships.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good ship and I didn’t even really mind the will-they-won’t-they vibe between Jack and Alyssa, but the show relied a little too much on some of these teen drama moments and it didn’t really need them. This made it seem like more of a watered down version of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Charmed (reboot) and The Vampire Diaries at times.

The Order is actually really dark and different on its own and when it centers around these ships for too long, you start to make comparisons…

A lot going on.

I wouldn’t say this is necessarily a con, but you need to pay attention. There are a lot of characters and a lot of plot twists. I strongly recommend watching season two right after season one or at least watching the recap.

So am I in or out?

The Order Season 2 Netflix 6

I’m in! This show is really entertaining and the twists and character dynamics will keep you invested. I actually may have enjoyed it even more than season one.

The Order is binge-watch worthy and I highly recommend it, especially since there is a gap in new shows and episodes right now.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Order in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Little Fires Everywhere” on Hulu: Deliciously Deadly Suburbia

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“If they’re saying something untrue, then you should change the story…”

Little Fires Everywhere premiered on Hulu on March 17th 2020 with 3 new episodes (Approximately 50 minutes in length). The remaining 5 episodes of the limited series will air weekly on Wednesdays. It stars Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Joshua Jackson, Lexi Underwood, and Gavin Lewis.

The show is based on the best-selling novel written by Celeste Ng. It follows a 90’s family living in the picture perfect suburban town of Shaker Heights. They cross paths with a mother and daughter who have just arrived in town, as secrets, dark pasts, and mysteries are revealed. Each character’s story is intertwined with another, creating a vortex of drama along the way.

This plot and setting may seem familiar, as it definitely channels some aspects of Big Little Lies, The Affair, and Desperate Housewives.

However, the connections and story lure you in right away, making this binge-watch friendly option entertaining. But does it do enough to stand out from its predecessors? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Little Fires Hulu 3

Witherspoon and Washington are electric on screen.

Their characters certainly have an interesting dynamic and we can absolutely feel the awkward tension between them, as each mother comes from a different socioeconomic background. However, the performances of these two incredible actresses transform these intriguing characters into something far greater. I can’t get enough of them!

The rest of the supporting characters are actually terrific as well and I would like to spotlight Lexi Underwood, who plays Mia’s (Washington) daughter, Pearl.

A mystery that leaves you wanting more.

The opening scene of the series immediately draws you in, as we discover that Elena Richardson’s (Witherspoon) beautiful home is on fire. We know that this is not an accident and it certainly makes you suspect everyone we meet, as we try to get to the bottom of this mystery, while other secrets are exposed along the way.

90’s nostalgia.

I don’t know about you, but I love a show that can transport me back to a time that I know very well. The show is set during the late 90’s and we get several mentions of this, but the pop culture references seamlessly mentioned really make you feel like you are turning back time.

The kids are seen watching Ricki Lake and The Real World. Elena’s daughter throws in some comments about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and even compares her own high school relationship to Brenda and Dylan’s on Beverly Hills, 90210.

Once you get to the high school dance, the songs will absolutely make you smile. Seriously, one song after the next had me singing along from Chumbawamba’s Tubthumping to The Cardigans’s Lovefool to Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply.

I was in 90’s music heaven and I still know all the words! Enjoy!

The Cons:

Little Fires Hulu 4
Images courtesy of Hulu

Same Reese. Different show.

I wouldn’t say that this is really a con, but I have seen Reese Witherspoon play this character before. Elena Richardson is very much a mix between Bree Van de Kamp from Desperate Housewives and Madeline Martha Mackenzie on Big Little Lies, played by Witherspoon. I’ve seen Reese play this character obsessed with perfection many times and I was hoping for a different role for her.

That being said, she plays the role brilliantly, but I guess I was looking for some more layers from her.

So am I in or out?

Little Fires Hulu 5

I’m in! This series is exactly what I need right now. The show keeps you on the edge of your seat and there are so many moments in-between the big ones that will take your breath away. Every character and plot point is important and Kerry Washington is out of this world. She’s truly incredible and she lights up the screen with Reese Witherspoon, as we unfold this mystery together.

While some of the suburban drama is predictable, the show has not let me down yet, surprising me with its reveals and twists. I can’t wait to watch the remaining episodes and I absolutely recommend this show.

It is the series to watch right now!

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Little Fires Everywhere in the comments section below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Riverdale” Season 4 Episode 1 Season Premiere: “We Will Never Forget You Fred”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the CW’s Riverdale season 4 episode 1 season premiere, I am in tears.  In fact, I was in tears throughout the entire episode, but I remembered that no one is every truly gone if we continue to honor them in what we do next.  Please note MAJOR spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.

In tonight’s episode, “Chapter Fifty-Eight:  In Memoriam,” the gang gets ready for the 4th of July and everything seems to be really quiet in town…until Archie receives a phone call that will alter his life forever.  My top 5 moments from the Riverdale season 4 episode 1 season premiere are:

5

“I have to bring him home…”

In the beginning of the episode, Archie receives a phone call while he is at Pop’s and discovers that his father has been killed in a hit and run.  Archie is beyond devastated and shocked and so are his friends and mother.  Even his dog whimpers quietly by the door, which immediately broke my heart.  Archie decides that he wants to bring his father’s body home and his friends agree to help him along the way.

The sudden passing of Luke Perry toward the end of season 3 shook everyone, but the show did not truly get a chance to give him a proper goodbye before.  While I knew that something like this was coming, I was not prepared for this incredibly emotional and heartbreaking episode.

Even though it was extremely difficult to watch and hit very close to home for me, it was something that Fred Andrews earned and something that Luke Perry deserved even more, reminding us just how many lives he has truly touched and how much he is missed every single day.

4

“I’m just paying my respects.”

It truly meant the world to me to see Shannen Doherty guest star on this particular episode to pay tribute to her good friend, Luke Perry.  I grew up watching her and Luke Perry on Beverly Hills, 90210 and both of them made a huge impact on my life.

Brenda gif

When I recently watched the BH90210 reboot, the tasteful tribute for Luke Perry was done perfectly and I thought it was so appropriate for us to see Luke Perry’s journey come full circle here.

Welcome to paradise 1

Doherty plays the woman that Fred saved on the road and while she doesn’t have a huge part, her presence was so powerful.  Seeing her standing next to Archie and the others truly allowed Luke’s memory to live on, seeing where he started and where he ended up, living on in every role he played.

3

“Whenever he looked at you, there was pride in his eyes.”

After discovering the identity of the man who killed his father, Archie decides to track him down to take justice into his own hands.  When Archie realizes that the man is innocent and is merely trying to protect his young son who made a mistake, Archie realizes how he could have been in this very same situation with his own father.

Archie feels ashamed and thinks he let his father down, but Veronica has a supporting and meaningful moment with him, telling him how proud his father truly was of him.  Sometimes Varchie can be over-dramatic, but I thought this was such a simple and perfect moment for them and I’m hoping Veronica can help him get through this because he is going to need her.

2

“We will never forget you Fred.”

After Cheryl initially feels some type of way about a parade on 4th of July, she has an immediate change of heart when she finds out what happened to Fred.  Cheryl and Toni go to see Mrs. Andrews and Cheryl explains that she knows what it feels like and she wants to do something for their family.

When Archie brings his father home, the entire town is waiting and there are signs showing their love and admiration of Fred, which was incredibly heartwarming to see.  Even though this town has had its fair share of tragedy and misfortune, everyone comes together now to honor a man who always just tried to do his best and help others.

1

“Fred Andrews will always be a part of Riverdale…I’m going to honor him.”

I thought that Archie’s eulogy was beautiful and simple, but he talked about how his father helped build this town and it’s clear that Fred made an impact on everyone in it…even Hiram Lodge, who ends up doing the right thing by paying for all of the costs.

Archie says that his father was the greatest man he’s ever known and hopes that his spirit and memory will live on.  At the end of the episode, each character has a moment to self-reflect and mourn and we end with Archie going into the garage.  We actually see some past clips of Fred; right before the camera zooms out, leaving us with the photograph of Fred and Archie together.

Luke Perry 10 9

This was probably the most incredible episode I have watched of the series.  Yes, it took a break from the drama and the mystery we have come to know and love, but it truly dedicated itself to a character and an actor who was so inspiring.  I feel incredibly honored to have witnessed a true tribute that was so beautiful and well done.

Thank you, Riverdale for providing Fred and Luke with this tribute.

Fred Andrews will always be a part of Riverdale and Luke Perry will always be in our hearts.

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Riverdale in the comments section below.  Thank you so much for reading and happy viewing!

Final Thoughts on the “BH90210” Reboot on Fox: Fun Nostalgia Served at the Peach Pit

So of course my favorite zip code will always be 90210, but I had some mixed feelings going into the premiere of the reboot.  After watching all six episodes, I am happy that I stuck it out because although the reboot was different than I had expected, it provided us with some fun nostalgia while giving us a different take on reboots.

Beverly Hills, 90210 is one of my favorite series of all time and I am a proud owner of the entire DVD set!

90210 dvd set

If you do attempt a re-watch of the original show (and why wouldn’t you), I do recommend to space it out because there are so many episodes.  Remember when this show actually gave us summer episodes? So much fun, but it’s a huge time investment!

When I heard about the reboot, I guess I was initially under the impression that it would follow our favorite characters in the future, so I was slightly disappointed when I discovered that it would actually be a sort of reality/drama/parody following the actors as they attempt to get a reboot of their show off the ground.

Sounds complicated?  It sort of was, but I’m glad that I continued watching because once I got over that initial shock, I was pleasantly surprised with what came next.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.

What I liked…

BH90210 Peach Pit Fox

The flashbacks and dream sequences.

Each episode featured a fun take on a flashback, giving 90210 fans everywhere a lot of Easter eggs, throwing it back to some of our favorite episodes.  For example, I loved seeing Steve and Andrea meeting up at the Peach Pit and asking if they could exchange an egg (throwback to episode U4EA).

We also got to see Jennie dreaming about being Kelly Taylor in the hallways, the girls re-creating their “Addicted to Clothes” group, Steve mentioning the Legacy Key, and David Silver performing “Forever,” which I surprisingly still know all the words to.  Don’t judge!

These Easter eggs and flashback/dream sequences were genius and they kept me invested throughout the entire show.  I mean, that’s why we are watching, right?  Because we’re fans!  So this was very much appreciated!

The tasteful tribute to Luke Perry was perfect.

It wasn’t over-the-top, but it was done seamlessly, as the cast made a toast to Luke in the series premiere.  At the end of the episode, Jennie and Tori watch Luke and Jason’s scene from the start of the show, which brought tears to my eyes.

Welcome to paradise 1

Fun guest-stars.

I won’t spoil them all, but let’s just say that I was pleasantly surprised with some of the guest stars and I was super excited to see them all back in action.  I personally would have liked to see a few other cast members join in on the fun, but I appreciate that we were able to get a few surprises and twists here and there!

What I didn’t like…

BH90210 Fox Jennie Tori

Some of the real life drama just didn’t work.

Sure, it was kind of fun to see Brian Austin Green married to a pop singer and some unresolved chemistry between Jennie and Jason, but it also just sort of confused me since this drama is loosely based on their real lives.  I appreciate that the cast was willing to make fun of themselves, but sometimes I just wanted to leave that drama behind and focus more on the nostalgia and some of the twists.

For example, the stalker mystery and the creepy stuff with Brian’s assistant was entertaining enough, so I didn’t necessarily need the rest of the extra drama on top of it.  Perhaps that just comes down to personal preference, however.

So am I in or out?

BH90210 Fox Cast

The 90210 fan in me is in because I would pretty much watch anything with this cast.  Overall, I was thoroughly entertained with the reboot, but I also wanted a lot more.  I guess I just saw so much potential and I wanted to see other things explored more, but I am completely supportive of this show.

BH90210 was the perfect summer show to binge-watch, reminding me why I fell in love with Beverly Hills, 90210 in the first place!

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on BH90210 in the comments section below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the Top 10 episodes of “Beverly Hills, 90210” to binge-watch before the premiere of “BH90210”

It’s almost here…the premiere of BH90210!  I don’t know about you, but I am beyond excited to catch up with the cast, as the original Beverly Hills, 90210 will always be one of my favorite series of all time.  When you think about the 90’s, this show naturally comes to mind and I have so many fond memories of it.

I always wanted to hang out at The Peach Pit and I was ready to march along with our favorite characters shouting, “Donna Martin graduates!”  Whether you were crying when Dylan and Brenda broke up, laughing when the girls performed at The Peach Pit, or cheering on David when he saved Donna, there are so many iconic episodes of this series that will continue to stand the test of time.

Even though I recently completed a re-watch of the entire series thanks to my wonderful DVD set, there are 304 episodes and that’s certainty a huge time commitment.  Luckily, I have narrowed my list down to the top 10 episodes to binge-watch from the original series before you grab your popcorn and catch up with the gang for the BH90210 reboot on Fox.  Please note spoilers are ahead.

“One Wedding and a Funeral” (Season 6, episode 10)

one wedding
After Dylan and Toni’s wedding, Toni’s father orders a hit on Dylan. Toni is driving Dylan’s car and ends up getting killed by mistake. The most heartbreaking episode of the series. “Look what they did to her, Brandon!” Dylan departs from the show at the end of the episode and doesn’t return until season 9.

“We Interrupt This Program” (Season 7, episode 18)

We interrupt
After being stalked for several episodes, Donna comes face-to-face with her stalker on live TV.

“Reunion” (Season 8, episode 27)

Even though there are so many other episodes I could mention, these 10 really capture the iconic feel of the show and bring you right back to Beverly Hills.  90210 will always be our favorite zip code and I can’t wait to watch the reboot on Fox! BH90210 premieres on August 7th. Stay tuned!

Ranking my top 5 Thanksgiving TV Episodes: “It’s a Ritual Sacrifice with Pie”

Greetings TV Fans!  Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it’s important to take a moment to think about what we are truly thankful for.  It’s a time to share with family and friends and to put that pesky diet aside to make room for some pumpkin pie.

For today, I am going to be ranking my absolute favorite Thanksgiving television episodes.  While there is a lot more material out there for Halloween and Christmas episodes, one should not discount some quality Thanksgiving programming.

So grab some more food and make room for some Thanksgiving TV fun!  Please note that some spoilers are ahead.

My top 5 Thanksgiving TV episodes are:

5

“Modern Family” Three Turkeys (TV Episode 2014)

Three turkeys collage

Modern Family does a fantastic job with holiday episodes.  While the Valentine’s Day and Halloween ones take the cake for me, “Three Turkeys” is absolutely hilarious.  During the episode, Phil and Luke work on the turkey together, but Claire worries that Phil may mess it up and has a back-up one ready to go.

Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria are supposed to go away, but end up staying; only they want to just have a nice and quiet Thanksgiving at home.  This doesn’t go exactly according to plan when Phil shows up to use their oven and the chaos continues, as the turkeys continue to multiply.  This is a great episode to watch with family and friends!

4

“Beverly Hills, 90210” The Kindness of Strangers (TV Episode 1992)

Beverly hills thanksgiving collage

While Thanksgiving is a time for family to come together, it is also a time to give as well.  Brandon crosses paths with a homeless man named Jack, who he previously tried to help over the summer.  Brandon could have just gone on his way, but he decides to bring him home for Thanksgiving dinner.

While Brandon’s father is not at all pleased initially, Jack proves to be worthy and is extremely grateful to be given a chance to spend this holiday with a warm meal and wonderful people.  Brandon always tries to do the right thing, but he really shines here.  This episode is heartwarming and really captures the essence of giving.

3

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Pangs (TV Episode 1999)

Buffy thanksgiving collage

So what do you do when you encounter the spirit of a Native American warrior who is looking to take his revenge out just before Thanksgiving dinner?  Well I guess you give Buffy Summers a call.  This episode is jam-packed with action and comedy.  Angel makes a special guest appearance, only he doesn’t inform Buffy that he is there to protect her from a great evil.

What makes this episode stand out is that Buffy is really trying to make her Thanksgiving dinner a success.  While the Scoobies try to figure out a way to stop the spirit of the warrior, Buffy insists on keeping her dinner going no matter what because you know, “It’s a Yam Sham.”

Spike even gets a seat at the table, only he is tied to a chair, which makes this episode even funnier.  If you need a break from the stress of preparing dinner, this is the episode to watch.

2

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” The Gang Squashes Their Beefs (TV Episode 2013)

Sunny thanksgiving collage

After running into the McPoyle brothers at the video store, the gang begins to realize that they need to bury the hatchet and wipe the slate clean with a lot of people…literally.  The gang invites over everyone they have wronged for Thanksgiving dinner and Dennis tries to sort of apologize, but really wants them to sign a treaty so that they no longer feel guilty.  Dennis does love his documentation.

This episode is absolutely hilarious and leads to a food fight that you may have only dreamed about at one of your own Thanksgiving dinners.  After Mac’s room is set on fire, the gang does the only right thing in this situation…they lock their guests inside the apartment and make a run for it.  This episode is laugh out loud funny and is definitely worth a second watch.

1

“South Park” Helen Keller!  The Musical (TV Episode 2000)

Gobbles collage

It should be no surprise that my favorite Thanksgiving TV episode is from South Park.  This episode is beyond hilarious and I have probably watched it every single Thanksgiving.  During the episode, the kids are putting on an interesting musical for Thanksgiving, but Timmy and his untalented turkey named Gobbles steal the show.

It may sound ridiculous, but you will end up rooting for this poor turkey and cheering for him when he finally goes through the hoop of fire.  “Gobbles!”  Now that’s an impressive finale!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to share some of your own thoughts and comments on your favorite Thanksgiving TV episodes.

**I just want to take a minute to thank each and every one of you for being so wonderful and supportive.  I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones!  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Throw-back Sunday: Ranking the top 5 couples from “Beverly Hills, 90210”

Happy Sunday TV fans!  This past summer, I invested quite a bit of time into re-watching all 10 seasons of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series and I have to say it was very entertaining.  I forgot how many episodes there were in some seasons especially when they had those special summer airings.  I dusted off my old DVD set and watched Brandon and Brenda Walsh tough it out in Beverly Hills, California, leaving their wholesome and normal lives back in Minnesota.

It’s been at least 6 years since I have watched the series, as I used to binge-watch a lot on Soapnet, but everything came flooding back to me from the instrumental theme song to the over-the-top drama between Brenda and Kelly.  Talk about paving the way for love triangles to come in later series!

After getting over the initial shock of how young everyone looked and watching them grow up all over again with drama never far behind, I started to think about some of my favorite couples on the series.  There are quite a few who had an undeniable connection even though some of them did not even last for the entirety of the series.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  My top five ships from Beverly Hills, 90210 are:

5

Dylan & Kelly.

Dylan and Kelly 1 14

During the first watch of the series, I was shocked by the scandalous actions of Dylan and Kelly.  Brenda went off to study abroad with Donna in Paris, leaving her best friend and her boyfriend behind for the summer.  It seemed like nothing could break the bond between fan-favorites, Dylan and Brenda, but Kelly managed to come between the couple.  I shouldn’t blame Kelly entirely, as Dylan was absolutely at fault here too.  While the couple shares its ups and downs over time, some of their first moments together in the swimming pool and at the beach bonfire are beyond passionate.  However, they lacked the friendship that Brenda and Dylan shared in my opinion.

Either way, their secret relationship caused a major rift between both the relationship of Brenda and Dylan and the friendship between Kelly and Brenda.  When they finally come clean and tell Brenda the truth, her reaction is so real and heart-breaking.  She trusted her two friends and is shocked at their betrayal.

Over the years, Kelly and Dylan have on and off again relations and never really end up together.  However, at the end of the series they are seen gazing at each other during David and Donna’s wedding to imply that their relationship is not over.  In the remake of 90210, Kelly reveals that Dylan is the father of her child, but is still not with him in this future.   Guess it wasn’t meant to be after all.

4

Brandon & Kelly.

Brandon and Kelly 1 14

Yes, Kelly does earn two spots in this ranking and it’s because there is such an undeniable love between Brandon and Kelly.  After my re-watch, I much preferred Brandon and Kelly together; as they seemed to balance each other out more and had more of that friendship I was looking for between Kelly and Dylan.

Kelly is familiar with betrayal and now turns the tables on Dylan to reveal her relationship with his best friend, Brandon.  While the betrayal does not have the same feeling of twisting the knife like with Brenda, it does hurt Dylan to see them together.  That being said, Dylan’s life is falling apart during this time and Kelly felt like she was drowning with him, descending further and further into his mess.

Brandon is very stable and charming, running for class office when they first meet.  It seems like Brandon will be the man to turn Kelly’s life around.  However, this couple deals with more drama and chaos than any other.  It is almost impossible for them to survive a fire, a cult, a drug addiction, a shooting, and a failed attempt to get married.   When you say that all out loud it seems very unlikely, but I promise this all happened to Kelly. While it doesn’t seem to be in the cards for Brandon and Kelly either, you can’t deny the love between these two characters.

3

Steve & Janet.

Steve and Janet 1 14

After Steve’s long-term relationship with ended with fan-favorite, Clare, viewers were wondering if he would ever find another love to provide him with the voice of reason he so desperately needed.  Steve was always the “class clown” and stayed away from responsibility as if it were the plague.  When he started working with Janet, he didn’t initially realize his feelings for her.  They started a friendship first and eventually began dating.

Janet was perfect for Steve, almost becoming his moral compass, similar to Brandon.  When Janet announced she was pregnant, Steve’s entire life changed for the better.  He embraced his responsibility and married Janet to the delight of fans everywhere.  This couple probably had the closest thing to a “normal relationship” on the show and continued to prove their love for one another as the series went on.

2

David & Donna.

David and Donna 1 14

This list would not be complete without including David Silver and Donna Martin.  The couple began dating in high school and had a sweet and innocent quality.  One of my favorite scenes is when Donna stops worrying about what others think and announces to her friends at the dance that she is dating David with confidence and love.

Over the years, this couple goes through a lot of ups and downs.  Donna feels very strongly about staying a virgin to the disappointment of David.  Although he tries to support her as much as possible, an affair takes place that breaks them up for a long period of time.

Even when David and Donna are not together, they keep their friendship alive.  When Donna is attacked, David is the one who comes to her rescue and saves her.  Toward the end of the series, Donna and David finally accept their destiny to be together and get married at the end of the show.  Fans were delighted to see the happy ending between David and Donna.  The high-school sweethearts have not had it easy at all, but they reunite and promise to love one another forever.

Some honorable mentions before revealing my number one ship are:

  • David & Valerie
  • Steve & Clare
  • Brandon & Emily Valentine
  • Noah & Donna
  • Dylan & Toni

1

Dylan & Brenda.

Brenda and Dylan 1 14

My number one ship has to go to Dylan and Brenda.  At the beginning of the series, their blossoming relationship is beautiful and real.  Brenda realizes that Dylan has a lot of baggage and a complicated life, but she doesn’t run away from it.  Rather, she runs toward him with open arms, revealing her strong feelings for him.  Even though they are in high school, Dylan and Brenda have a strong relationship filled with a lot of laughter and romance.

As they begin to get closer and closer, Brenda’s father attempts to intervene, fearing that his daughter is making bad decisions.  While this does take a toll on Dylan and Brenda’s relationship, they continue to tough it out together.  R.E.M’s song, “Losing My Religion,” is basically the anthem of Dylan and Brenda’s break-up and attempt to put the pieces back together.

After Kelly and Dylan have an affair, it seems like Brenda and Dylan will not end up together.  However, once Brenda leaves the show, the writers add in that Dylan and Brenda are living together in Europe, trying to give fans the happy ending they so desperately wanted between these two.

There was something so believable and undeniable between this ship, still holding the test of time.  Even when both characters were off the show, fans were still talking about them and rooting for them.

I hope you enjoyed my list and feel free to post your own thoughts and comments about the ships on Beverly Hills, 90210.  Thanks for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Mick” season 2 episode 10: “The Climb.”

Happy Wednesday!  After watching Fox’s The Mick season 2 episode 10 last night, I am left with the urge to start Beverly Hills, 90210 over again…even though I literally just re-watched the entire series a few months ago.  Why, you might ask?  Keep reading to find out!  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Climb,” Sabrina is hosting a party for her socialite art-friends.  Mickey seems uninterested in “social climbing” until she bumps into a fabulous celebrity mother from our favorite zip code.  Meanwhile, Chip goes camping with Mr. Buckley to share some father and son precious moments and Ben takes matters into his own hands when he realizes that being cool isn’t everything.   My top 5 moments from The Mick season 2 episode 10 are:

5

“Being cool is very important.”

Ben has a new friend named Totsi who is very interested in new-age meditation and abhors instant coffee.  Mickey is ready to tell Ben’s new friend to take a hike, but Ben pleads with her to be nice and to do what he asks because he thinks he is cool.  Mickey tries to explain that being cool isn’t everything, but can’t come up with a compelling argument to support this and agrees that “being cool is VERY important.”

4

“Social Climbing” via the salon.

In the beginning of the episode, Sabrina explains that she is throwing a “salon” for her art-friends and that it will be very classy and exclusive.  Mickey initially wants nothing to do with this and mistakes a salon for a hair-salon.  She quickly recovers from this naïve error, ripping on Sabrina for “social climbing.”  Mickey claims that she is above this and is content with who she is, but an unexpected new friend will quickly change her tune.

3

Chip bonds with his father.

After it is revealed that Chip has a different father from his siblings, he tracks down his biological father, Mr. Buckley, desperately looking for a sense of belonging.  In a previous episode, this goes horribly wrong when Chip takes out his sister on a date trying to keep up his cover story as an intern at Mr. Buckley’s job.  Mr. Buckley is willing to give him a second chance; however, as he takes Chip camping.  Chip tries to convince his dad that he is up to the challenge, but it is clear that Chip has never had to do anything on his own, let alone camping in the wilderness.  Just as they begin to set up the camp, Chip knocks over a stack of boats and Mr. Buckley’s leg is severely injured as a result.  Chip panics when he realizes that he has no cell-phone reception, shrieking in defeat.  Mr. Buckley attempts to talk him through sterilizing the wound, when Chip vomits all over it in response.  Just when things can’t get any worse, Mr. Buckley instructs him to pull his leg so he can snap it back into place and Chip pushes instead, making the injury even worse.  At the end of the episode, Chip is in the hospital with Mr. Buckley and his “dad” reveals that he had a DNA test completed and that he is not Chip’s real father.  Chip is disappointed to discover this and opens up a criminal file to reveal his real dad.  If he does track down his real dad, perhaps camping should be off the table as a form of bonding.

2

Ben plays “Cowboys and Indians” with Totsi.

After Ben comes to the realization that he no longer wants to play with Totsi or listen to his new-age babble, he slaps him across the face, hoping to get the message across.  Mickey scolds him and explains that there is no hitting in their house…opting to then tie him up as an alternative.  Ben takes this to an extreme, however; when he begins to shave off Totsi’s dreads, leaving even Mickey speechless about how to explain this to his celebrity mom.  While it’s important that Ben embraces who he is and learns that he doesn’t need to compromise to be cool, perhaps some ground rules need to be set.

1

Jennie Garth!

When Mickey has had enough of Totsi’s nonsense, she brings him home and the door opens to reveal his celebrity mom…Jennie freakin Garth!  My reaction mirrored that of Mickey’s and Alba’s who were thrilled to meet Jennie Garth, aka Kelly Taylor.  Sabrina, however; reveals the generation gap, claiming to not know who she is.  Alba is horrified by this and chimes in with “what a Brenda!”  Mickey and Alba begin social climbing as well, but it doesn’t really turn out the way they hope.  Alba’s goal is to get Jennie to sign her 90210 lunch box and thermos, while Mickey is looking to get the ultimate invitation to Mario Lopez’s birthday party.  After all, “he has access to all of Hollywood.”  Things don’t go as planned, however; when Jennie reveals to have the same new-age philosophy as her son, Totsi, boring Mickey.  Jennie also has trouble remembering who Mickey is, explaining that she meets so many people.  She comes up with interesting ways to remember everyone’s name.  Mickey is not so thrilled with hers:  rhyming Mick with Sick and then yelling cancer to recall her new friend.  Mickey is still focused on the goal of getting the invitation to Mario Lopez’s party so she puts her feelings aside, however; there is no coming back from Jennie walking in on Totsi being tied to a chair, missing most of his hair.  It’s safe to say that Mickey will not be joining Mario Lopez for his birthday.

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and comments on The Mick below. Happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 siblings from television: Family is where the heart is.

As we are in the midst of the holiday season, it’s a time to re-connect with family and remember what’s truly important in life.  Many of us have an unspoken bond with our siblings, whether it is inside jokes or a similar laugh, which is natural when you have all grown up together and faced many of the same challenges and shared similar memories.  This really got me thinking about siblings on television and how difficult it must be to create that connection instantly.  The actors on these shows already have the complicated task of portraying their roles and diving deep into what makes that particular character tick.  However, when you also need to add on a believable and real connection as siblings, this becomes even more difficult to capture.  For today’s topic, I am going to be ranking my top 5 siblings from television.  The siblings I chose are not just cast well.  Rather, they become so believable as siblings that I have to bring up Wikipedia on my phone just to double check that the actors are not relatedPlease note spoilers are ahead.  My top 5 siblings from television are:

5

Brandon and Brenda Walsh from Beverly Hills, 90210.

The Minnesota Twins!

Who could forget when twins, Brandon and Brenda Walsh move from Minnesota all the way to glamorous Beverly Hills, California.  While the twins quickly realize that West Beverly High is not like any other high school they have ever seen, they fast-track into a superficial bubble where they are faced with difficult decisions.  Luckily, the twins have each other to support one another.  Some of my favorite moments on the show are when Brandon or Brenda would make a huge mistake and they would end up meeting in their Jack and Jill bathroom, relieved to see their other half so they could confide in them.  Brandon and Brenda share quite a bit of fights along the way and introduce new friends like Kelly and Dylan into the mix, but there is something about their bond as siblings that is wholesome and unbreakable.  Fans were disappointed when Brenda left the show, wondering where that would leave Brandon now that his beloved sister was gone.  While Brandon still kept viewers hooked with his charm and good sense of right and wrong, the earlier episodes with the Walsh twins had something truly special that could not be so easily replaced even with new cast members.

4

Fiona, Lip, Ian, Debbie, Carl, and Liam Gallagher from Shameless.

“Hey, sometimes life throws a couple swings at you. But we’re Gallaghers, okay? And there’s two things that we’re really good at:  knowing how to get back up, and knowing how to party.” (Shameless)

This list would not be complete without the Gallagher siblings we have watched grow up over the years.  Fiona has the difficult task of taking care of her five younger siblings since their parents are rarely present…and when they are it’s like they are children too.  While this forced Fiona to grow up very quickly, she has always made it clear that family comes first.  The Gallagher siblings may appear to be a group of untamed misfits, but at the end of the day they are truly there for one another.  The family faces many problems over the seasons ranging from losing their house to Fiona winding up in jail.  When Fiona was not around, Lip and the others recognized that they now needed to step up.  Whether that meant collecting money in a jar for the electric bill or making sure that Liam was actually fed breakfast, the siblings are forced to grow up fast in a world that seems to be against them, but they are resilient and strong.

3

Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows from Prison Break.

“I’m breaking out, and you’re going to make sure my brother goes with me.” (Michael from Prison Break)

How many of us would tattoo our entire bodies with the blueprints of a prison and commit a crime so that you could help break your brother out of prison?  Seems extreme, right?  But Michael Scofield is a genius and will not stop until he frees his brother, recognizing that his brother was framed for a crime that he didn’t commit.  While this show keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with each new challenge that gets in the way of the escape, what keeps you coming back for more is the undeniable connection between Michael and Lincoln.  Lincoln is the older brother and used to take care of Michael when he was younger.  Michael feels like he owes him and has guilt about turning his back on him previously when he asked for help.  He sacrifices everything to help him escape, redefining what unconditional love means in the process.  Michael and Lincoln always have each other’s backs and their physical resemblance is uncanny.  Even though they are not related, I found myself repeatedly searching online to see if perhaps they were distant cousins to no avail.

2

The Halliwell Sisters from Charmed.

“The power of 3 will set us free!” (Charmed)

Charmed has always been a guilty pleasure of mine.  I always enjoy watching shows that feature a supernatural premise, but this series goes beyond that.  The sisterly bond between Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell is so heart-warming that you truly believe they are sisters.  In moments where one of the sisters faces an unstoppable evil or comes close to death, their heart-breaking tears even get me crying.  Through all of the evil monsters and demons they face as witches, they take the time to bond and fight over things normal sisters would, such as trying to stealing the other one’s boyfriend or remembering to ask before borrowing a favorite outfit.  This light comedy combined with some intense drama and action along the way makes this show truly unique.  Much like 90210, Shannen Doherty left the show, which had fans wondering how Prue could ever be replaced.  You couldn’t just recast her because the sisterly bond is what captured so many viewers.  Fans would have been put off if they just tried to pretend like another actress was the oldest sister. The producers and writers were smart enough to add in a new story-line where Piper and Phoebe discover that they have a half-sister they never knew about previously who could help re-establish the power of 3.  Whether you were on board with this or not, Paige stepped in seamlessly to fill the void Prue left and the sisterly bond continued to stay strong.

1

Dean and Sam Winchester from Supernatural.

“You saved my life over and over.  I mean, you sacrifice everything for me, don’t you think I’d do the same thing for you?  You’re my big brother.  There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”  (Sam from Supernatural)

So my number one pick for best siblings on television has to go to my favorite brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester.  The series has lasted for 13 seasons and is still going strong.  Like Charmed, this show features a supernatural premise…hence the title.  Sam and Dean are forced to grow up quickly when their mother dies when they are young and they follow in the shadow of their father’s footsteps to become hunters.  The brothers travel from place to place to take on cases and help save innocent lives, but deal with some powerful obstacles along the way.  Whether it is getting trapped in hell or purgatory or working with angels or demons, the brothers refuse to let death get in the way.  They support each other no matter what.  When one brother is going through a difficult time, the other recognizes that he needs to step up and help pick up the pieces.  Out of every show I have ever watched, the bond between Sam and Dean is the most real and uplifting.  You don’t doubt for a second they are brothers and you never give up on them.  What’s so great about the brothers is that they also have quite a few hilarious moments together as well, ranging from running away from an adorable Yorkie to reluctantly facing a child-hood fear of clowns.  This reminds viewers that the brothers are human and while their calling is to fight the good fight, they are not afraid to share some laughs too.  Fans love when the brothers show up posing as FBI agents, wondering what new dynamic duo they will pretend to be.  Like our own families, Sam and Dean portray the good, the bad, and everything in between, truly representing what it means to stick by one another through thick and thin.

I hope you enjoyed the list and please feel free to post your thoughts and comments below on some of your favorite siblings from television.  Happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 TV Mean Girls of all time: “Stop trying to make Fetch happen!”

“On Wednesdays we wear Pink!” (Mean Girls) Well it is Wednesday, but I am sorry to say I am not wearing anything pink.  Due to the lack of new shows airing because of the holiday season, I thought it would be a good time to start diving deeper into the roles of some of my favorite characters on television.  While the good girl typically saves the day or solves the mystery in the nick of time, it got me thinking about the mean girls who sometimes end up in the background, no matter how much they try to hog the spotlight.

While the Mean Girls film is one of my absolute favorites, I started to think about some characters from television shows who could have easily been invited to sit at their table.  While these female characters put their best effort forward to look amazing and act fierce, they each have a likable quality as well, which goes to show that there is a lot more to them than initially meets the eye.  My top 5 TV Mean Girls of all time are:

5

Alison DiLaurentis from Pretty Little Liars.

“Friends share secrets.  That’s what keeps us close.” (Alison from Pretty Little Liars)

If you haven’t gotten a chance to binge-watch Pretty Little Liars yet, I absolutely recommend it.  Just when you think you have it figured out, there is a new twist or turn.  Please note spoilers are ahead as a warning.  In the beginning of the series, four friends are trying to figure out the mystery behind Alison’s disappearance and presumed death.  There are flashbacks from the past along the way which showcase how mean Alison was to those around her.

Alison had the gift of manipulation and spoke to others in such a condescending manner, that even adults feared her.  At this point in the show, it didn’t seem like Alison had any redeeming qualities.  She made Hanna feel bad about her weight and led Emily on, realizing that she was a lesbian without a care in the world.  She also strategically used the secrets of her friends against them and played them to her advantage.  However, later we learn that Alison is actually alive and the mysterious A is out to punish her along with her friends.

While Alison never really leaves her mean girl card behind, she does start to show signs of truly caring for others, especially Emily, as she does have romantic feelings for her.  When the series goes five years into the future, Alison is actually a school teacher and tries to pay it forward, but still refuses to allow anyone to step on her or get in her way.

4

Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl.

“Ladies you can give your tiny brains a rest.  Once again the world has proven that anything you can do, I can do better.” (Blair from Gossip Girl)

Blair is the image of perfection in Gossip Girl.  Her ensembles and make-up are always flawless and she even has minions who follow her around and follow her every demand, as if they were truly serving a queen.  Blair even refers to herself as the “Queen Bee” and her loyal subjects at her prep high-school in New York City don’t really challenge her on this.  Blair is infamous for her schemes and frequently feuds with her best friend, Serena.

While Blair is not afraid to fight dirty, she refuses to shatter her image of perfection in the process.  She is typically the master-mind behind the scheme and has others do her bidding, refusing to apologize for her actions.  While it seems that this mean girl is cold and heartless, Blair does have a loving side.  Her on and off again romance with Chuck Bass reveals her vulnerability, as she finds herself thinking with her heart before her head here, exposing that she does have goodness within.  Nevertheless, you certainly do not want to ever cross Blair because she will do whatever it takes to win.

3

Cheryl Blossom from Riverdale.

“You catatonic bimbos didn’t vote for me!” (Cheryl from Riverdale)

Cheryl has the mean girl act down pat for sure.  She doesn’t enter a room unless she has her perfect shade of dark crimson lip-stick flawless in order to match her hair.  Much like her hair, Cheryl is fiery and passionate.  She is not afraid to speak her mind and often says insensitive things without realizing it.  Cheryl is the head of the cheer-leading squad and treats the other girls like her subjects, completely appalled when she is voted out and Veronica becomes captain.

Cheryl is not just talk however; as her actions have proven to be very dangerous.  She even sets her house on fire with her mother still inside without thinking twice about it.  Cheryl does reveal glimmers of goodness along the way.  She was truly impacted by the loss of her twin brother, Jason and she does try to help Betty and the gang here and there to prove that she can be useful.  However, Cheryl is damaged by the deceit and betrayal of her family and it’s not so easy to turn off the mean girl vibe.  While I have hope for Cheryl, she is still a girl to watch out for.

2

Valerie Malone from Beverly Hills, 90210.

“I’m not Brenda.  I’m never going to be Brenda.  Don’t talk to me about Brenda!” (Val to Dylan in Beverly Hills, 90210)

Valerie Malone still deserves a spot toward the top of this list even after all this time.  Known for being a scheming femme fatale, she fools everyone when she arrives to town, appearing to be a sweet and innocent girl from the mid-west.  However, the characters from our favorite zip code are in for a rude awakening, as Val unleashes her street smarts and uses her powers of persuasion and manipulation to break apart this happy group of friends.

Val has romantic relationships with pretty much all of the main characters including Dylan, Brandon, David, and Steve.  As a result, she burns bridges fairly quickly with Kelly who becomes her main rival.  Val’s snappy one-liners and sneaky maneuvers prove that she is one to watch.  She has grown past the high school drama, however; and moves on to blackmailing and dangerous negotiations to help her become a successful business woman.  Talk about making a deal with the devil, Val doesn’t allow anyone to double-cross her.

Val is not all bad, however; as she has a very troubled past and does truly care for Brandon as if he were her own family.  Val tries to be a good person, but when the task becomes too difficult, she finds it easier to hide behind her bad girl image.

1

Cordelia Chase from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

“God! What is your childhood trauma? Excuse me, I have to call everyone I have ever met, right now.” (Cordelia to Buffy when she attacks her by accident)

So my number one pick for best TV mean girl has to go to the beautiful and hilarious, Cordelia Chase.  While Buffy and Willow tend to have most of the fan-base and get a lot of air time, one should not discount Cordelia.  She started out in a supporting role, playing the mean girl role to a tee, as if it was her calling in life to be unpleasant to those around her.  However, later in the series, Cordelia becomes a member of the Scoobies and does try to lend a helping hand…when it’s convenient for her.

One of my favorite episodes is when her and Buffy compete for Homecoming queen.  Cordelia is not about to just hand over the crown to Buffy and goes through great lengths to defeat her.  The two end up caught in a trap cleverly called “Slayerfest 98” where the vampires mistake Cordelia for Faith.  Nonetheless, the two have to make amends and put differences aside to stay alive, even if it means using a spatula as a weapon.

Cordelia does eventually grow into a caring person especially when she joins Angel in LA, but one cannot forget her witty come-backs and her unforgiving attitude.  She even tells a ghost off in Angel, proving that she is not going to let anyone step on her, supernatural or not.  Cordelia would probably end up leading the “Plastics” if she were in the Mean Girls film, proving to be a timeless mean girl that we still root for.

I hope you enjoyed the list and please feel free to post your thoughts and comments below on some of your favorite TV mean girls.  Happy viewing!
