Ranking the top 5 moments from “Younger” season 5 episode 10: “We Accept the Love We Think We Deserve”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching TV Land’s Younger season 5 episode 10, I realized that it’s important to take our own advice.  Sometimes it’s easier to reflect on what someone else might need or deserve, but what happens when we take a good hard look in the mirror?  Can we truly apply that same advice to our own situation?  It’s important to remember that the person staring back at us in the mirror deserves the same respect as anyone else.  We just have to remember that we are worth it and we do deserve our very own chance at happiness.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Girls on the Side,” Liza quickly realizes that her secret relationship with Charles is not ideal.  Meanwhile, Josh opens up Inkburg 2.0, Diana meets Enzo’s entire family, and Caitlin introduces her mother to her new boyfriend.  My top 5 moments from Younger season 5 episode 10 are:

5

“He is your father’s age.”

Liza is surprised and excited to run into her daughter, Caitlin, at Josh’s re-opening.  When Caitlin introduces Liza to her new boyfriend, Liza is not thrilled.  Caitlin’s new man is much older than her and also her former English professor at school.  Liza tries to give him a chance and agrees to brunch with them and Josh tags along for moral support.  Liza reminds Caitlin that he is her father’s age and Caitlin hilariously tells her mom that she checked and he is in fact younger than her dad.  Liza doesn’t want to get in the way of Caitlin’s happiness, but she is very worried about this new relationship and how it will impact her daughter.

4

“I just want to acknowledge one person in particular.  She inspired me to not give up so thank you Liza.”

Liza is very excited to attend the launch party for Josh’s grand opening of his new tattoo parlor.  Kelsey had previously told her that he has been trying really hard to impress her, but Liza just wants to be there to show her support for him.  When Josh gives a speech, he focuses entirely on Liza and thanks her for being there for him and never giving up on him.  This moment is truly touching, but it makes it so much harder to shift gears toward Team Charles, especially when Josh wears his heart on his sleeve…of tattoos.  Josh and Liza have had their fair share of ups and downs, but it’s nice to see him take a moment to acknowledge her here.  But is there more to it beyond friendship?  We’ll have to wait and see.

3

“I am too old to fight.”

In this episode, Diana is invited to dinner with Enzo’s entire family and she is beyond nervous.  Enzo’s mother tells her to bring a dish and she enlists the help of Maggie to pull off something spectacular.  When she arrives, Enzo’s mother is pleased with the dish, but this leads to Diana being forced to help her in the kitchen.  Diana is a real trooper and tries to do her very best, but she has had enough when Enzo’s mother scolds her for not using the proper garnish on the Eel dish.  Even though Diana has very strong feelings for Enzo, she is not about to go insane to impress his mother.  Diana courageously stands up to Enzo’s mother after her harsh words and walks out.  Enzo goes after her and tells her that he is going to move to an apartment in Manhattan, which shows that he is not ready to give up on Diana just yet.  After all, he likes to be around strong women and Diana is absolutely worthy of this title.  Arrivederci Enzo’s mom!

2

“You don’t even know what real is.”

It seems like Josh and Liza are getting along very well, but this takes a turn for the worst when Liza decides to confide in him about her relationship with Charles.  Liza tells Josh that she is “trying to be more real,” but Josh tells her that a secret relationship can never be something real and that he was always so open with his feelings for her.  While I was heartbroken for Josh in this moment, I was beyond upset when we see him going to get his dragon tattoo covered up or re-done, which is the tattoo he got for Liza.  Is Josh really ready to permanently remove his attachment to Liza?

1

“Call me when it is.”

After Caitlin comes home upset after her boyfriend made her leave because they could be seen together by a colleague, Liza tells Caitlin all about the lie she has been living.  Caitlin is doubtful at first, but is supportive of her mother.  Liza tells Caitlin that she deserves to be with someone in an open and honest relationship and quickly realizes that she needs to apply this to her own situation with Charles.  She asks Maggie, “What if Charles and I are just a fantasy?”  Maggie hates seeing Liza resort to being someone’s side piece because she deserves so much more.  At the end of the episode, Charles explains why they need to still keep their relationship a secret and that it’s not the right time yet.  Liza courageously tells him to call her when it is, trying to accept the love that she does truly deserve, which is something more than this.  While I was heartbroken to see a setback for Charles and Liza’s relationship, it’s important that Liza doesn’t lose her sense of self-worth along the way.  I’m proud of you Liza!  Stay tuned!

When Kallie Bennett, a jaded teenage girl plagued by her alcoholic mother and her peers molded out of sheer bubble gum perfection, chases after Alice in Wonderland herself, she ends up lost in her own version of Wonderland, which forces her to face her utmost fears and introduces her to familiar characters with a dark twist. Among these characters is Ches, a gorgeous vampire with a conflicted conscience, who becomes Kallie’s guide and blossoming love interest. She also crosses paths with Queen Hartley, a manipulative witch who has the power to strip away one’s memories and imagination, which brings a bone chilling new meaning to “off with their heads.” In The Search for Alice, Kallie starts to realize that her Wonderland is just as frightening as her own reality and that she cannot always run away from her problems. She must figure out a way to defeat Queen Hartley and return home before it is too late, but she soon learns that escaping Wonderland means leaving Ches behind forever.

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Younger” season 5 episode 8: “Can We Stay In Our Bubble Just For Tonight?”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching TV Land’s Younger season 5 episode 8 last night, I found myself thinking of Liza’s advice when she says, “The good things only happen when we risk letting the bad stuff happen too.”  We may want to keep our guard up or make decisions with our head rather than our heart, but sometimes we can miss out on something truly great if we do so.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Bubble,” Liza and Charles finally get a chance to explore their feelings for one another.  Meanwhile, Kelsey tries to make the right decision, Lauren has a dinner party, and Diana struggles with keeping up with her cleanse.  My top 5 moments from Younger season 5 episode 8 are:

5

“I need to press pause.”

Kelsey has clearly been stressed out in her personal and professional life and it doesn’t help that she has been stuck in the middle of a love triangle between her author and her co-worker.  Kelsey finally makes the decision to choose herself, or at least a time out, when she tells Jake that she wants to cool things at least until after the book comes out.  Kelsey is just being honest and tries to explain that she has made this mistake before and it seems like Jake is willing to accept this.  However, Jake demonstrates his sneaky side once again and goes behind Kelsey’s back to approach Charles and suggest that his book be published by Empirical Press rather than Millennial.  Jake’s actions prove that he is absolutely not the right match for Kelsey, but will the shadiness stop here?  Something tells me it’s only the beginning.  Watch out Kelsey!

4

“We all have issues.”

Lauren is excited to host a dinner party for her friends and plans on inviting a woman she recently met that she is very much interested in.  Josh and Maggie show up and Maggie hilariously brings some food even though Lauren is cooking and reminds her, “You want to impress this girl right?”  When the doorbell finally rings, Maggie is beyond shocked to learn that Lauren’s date is her ex-girlfriend, Malkie.  Lauren’s cooking is not the only thing stirring in the pot, as the drama and tension between these two escalates.  Malkie and Maggie clearly have unresolved feelings for one another, but Maggie leaves before they can completely rehash everything.  After speaking to Liza, Maggie realizes that maybe she does need to let her wall down and give Malkie a chance.  With the help of Josh, she paints a beautiful mural with Malkie’s portrait to surprise her and it looks like they are both ready to give their relationship another go and put in some work.

3

“This one is hers.”

In the beginning of the episode, Zane is still angry with Kelsey after being taken off of Jake’s book.  Kelsey tries to talk it out with him, but Zane harshly tells her, “You screwed me and then you screwed me over.”  Later on in the episode, Charles approaches Zane about shifting Jake’s book over to Empirical and Zane proves to be a knight in shining armor.  He could easily take the credit here and grab this opportunity, but he tells Charles that Kelsey worked very hard on the book and Charles agrees to keep it at Millennial.  Zane may be hurt and frustrated by Kelsey’s actions, but he refuses to stoop to the underhanded level that Jake has, proving once again to a good and honest man.  Now let’s hope our girl Kelsey can realize this too.  Men like Zane are hard to come by and I would hate to see these two miss out on an opportunity to be together.

2

“She might want revenge.”

Liza and Diana are meeting with Reese Witherspoon’s representative to discuss “Marriage Vacation,” and Liza is shocked when Pauline arrives.  Pauline clearly knows what is happening between Liza and Charles, as she starts coming up with different premises for her sequel, suggesting that perhaps a younger assistant steals her husband.  Liza panics and plays along when she says, “Maybe the assistant was actually trying to help,” but Pauline is not buying it and starts talking about revenge ideas.  While it is great to see Liza and Charles finally together, there are still many outside forces that can bring consequences.  Are they finally ready to face them together?

1

“Can we stay in our bubble just for tonight?”

The beginning of the episode opens up with us seeing bits and pieces of Liza and Charles’s night together which is very sexy and passionate.  Charles leaves for ten days and when he returns, he is sporting a new beard.  While Liza is not necessarily a fan of the beard, she is so excited to see Charles and the two continue their secret relationship by meeting up in the stairwell and sending texts to one another.  When Charles invites Liza out, he takes her to Battery Park to a sea glass carousel and I was absolutely swooning over this date.  All of this talk about staying in a bubble and Charles literally takes her to their very own bubble away from the rest of the world.  After Liza tells Charles about Pauline, he explains that he has already taken care of it and agrees to let her take her sequel to another publishing company.  It’s clear that Charles’s main priority is Liza, but he does recognize that the challenges are going to keep coming their way.  While we know that they cannot stay hidden in their bubble forever, I have to say that it was so wonderful to finally see these two enjoy some quality time together.  But what happens when they step out of the bubble and face reality?  Something tells me that as long as they stick together, they can make it through any obstacle thrown their way.  That doesn’t mean it will be smooth sailing; however, as we know these two are in for a bumpy ride.  Stay tuned!

Throw-back Sunday: Ranking the top 5 couples from “Beverly Hills, 90210”

Happy Sunday TV fans!  This past summer, I invested quite a bit of time into re-watching all 10 seasons of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series and I have to say it was very entertaining.  I forgot how many episodes there were in some seasons especially when they had those special summer airings.  I dusted off my old DVD set and watched Brandon and Brenda Walsh tough it out in Beverly Hills, California, leaving their wholesome and normal lives back in Minnesota.  It’s been at least 6 years since I have watched the series, as I used to binge-watch a lot on Soapnet, but everything came flooding back to me from the instrumental theme song to the over-the-top drama between Brenda and Kelly.  Talk about paving the way for love triangles to come in later series!  After getting over the initial shock of how young everyone looked and watching them grow up all over again with drama never far behind, I started to think about some of my favorite couples on the series.  There are quite a few who had an undeniable connection even though some of them did not even last for the entirety of the series.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  My top five ships from Beverly Hills, 90210 are:

5

Dylan & Kelly.

Dylan and Kelly 1 14

During the first watch of the series, I was shocked by the scandalous actions of Dylan and Kelly.  Brenda went off to study abroad with Donna in Paris, leaving her best friend and her boyfriend behind for the summer.  It seemed like nothing could break the bond between fan-favorites, Dylan and Brenda, but Kelly managed to come between the couple.  I shouldn’t blame Kelly entirely, as Dylan was absolutely at fault here too.  While the couple shares its ups and downs over time, some of their first moments together in the swimming pool and at the beach bonfire are beyond passionate.  However, they lacked the friendship that Brenda and Dylan shared in my opinion.  Either way, their secret relationship caused a major rift between both the relationship of Brenda and Dylan and the friendship between Kelly and Brenda.  When they finally come clean and tell Brenda the truth, her reaction is so real and heart-breaking.  She trusted her two friends and is shocked at their betrayal.  Over the years, Kelly and Dylan have on and off again relations and never really end up together.  However, at the end of the series they are seen gazing at each other during David and Donna’s wedding to imply that their relationship is not over.  In the remake of 90210, Kelly reveals that Dylan is the father of her child, but is still not with him in this future.   Guess it wasn’t meant to be after all.

4

Brandon & Kelly.

Brandon and Kelly 1 14

Yes, Kelly does earn two spots in this ranking and it’s because there is such an undeniable love between Brandon and Kelly.  After my re-watch, I much preferred Brandon and Kelly together; as they seemed to balance each other out more and had more of that friendship I was looking for between Kelly and Dylan.  Kelly is familiar with betrayal and now turns the tables on Dylan to reveal her relationship with his best friend, Brandon.  While the betrayal does not have the same feeling of twisting the knife like with Brenda, it does hurt Dylan to see them together.  That being said, Dylan’s life is falling apart during this time and Kelly felt like she was drowning with him, descending further and further into his mess.  Brandon is very stable and charming, running for class office when they first meet.  It seems like Brandon will be the man to turn Kelly’s life around.  However, this couple deals with more drama and chaos than any other.  It is almost impossible for them to survive a fire, a cult, a drug addiction, a shooting, and a failed attempt to get married.   When you say that all out loud it seems very unlikely, but I promise this all happened to Kelly. While it doesn’t seem to be in the cards for Brandon and Kelly either, you can’t deny the love between these two characters.

3

Steve & Janet.

Steve and Janet 1 14

After Steve’s long-term relationship with ended with fan-favorite, Clare, viewers were wondering if he would ever find another love to provide him with the voice of reason he so desperately needed.  Steve was always the “class clown” and stayed away from responsibility as if it were the plague.  When he started working with Janet, he didn’t initially realize his feelings for her.  They started a friendship first and eventually began dating.  Janet was perfect for Steve, almost becoming his moral compass, similar to Brandon.  When Janet announced she was pregnant, Steve’s entire life changed for the better.  He embraced his responsibility and married Janet to the delight of fans everywhere.  This couple probably had the closest thing to a “normal relationship” on the show and continued to prove their love for one another as the series went on.

2

David & Donna.

David and Donna 1 14

This list would not be complete without including David Silver and Donna Martin.  The couple began dating in high school and had a sweet and innocent quality.  One of my favorite scenes is when Donna stops worrying about what others think and announces to her friends at the dance that she is dating David with confidence and love.  Over the years, this couple goes through a lot of ups and downs.  Donna feels very strongly about staying a virgin to the disappointment of David.  Although he tries to support her as much as possible, an affair takes place that breaks them up for a long period of time.  Even when David and Donna are not together, they keep their friendship alive.  When Donna is attacked, David is the one who comes to her rescue and saves her.  Toward the end of the series, Donna and David finally accept their destiny to be together and get married at the end of the show.  Fans were delighted to see the happy ending between David and Donna.  The high-school sweethearts have not had it easy at all, but they reunite and promise to love one another forever.

Some honorable mentions before revealing my number one ship are:

  • David & Valerie
  • Steve & Clare
  • Brandon & Emily Valentine
  • Noah & Donna
  • Dylan & Toni

1

Dylan & Brenda.

Brenda and Dylan 1 14

My number one ship has to go to Dylan and Brenda.  At the beginning of the series, their blossoming relationship is beautiful and real.  Brenda realizes that Dylan has a lot of baggage and a complicated life, but she doesn’t run away from it.  Rather, she runs toward him with open arms, revealing her strong feelings for him.  Even though they are in high school, Dylan and Brenda have a strong relationship filled with a lot of laughter and romance.  As they begin to get closer and closer, Brenda’s father attempts to intervene, fearing that his daughter is making bad decisions.  While this does take a toll on Dylan and Brenda’s relationship, they continue to tough it out together.  R.E.M’s song, “Losing My Religion,” is basically the anthem of Dylan and Brenda’s break-up and attempt to put the pieces back together.  After Kelly and Dylan have an affair, it seems like Brenda and Dylan will not end up together.  However, once Brenda leaves the show, the writers add in that Dylan and Brenda are living together in Europe, trying to give fans the happy ending they so desperately wanted between these two.  There was something so believable and undeniable between this ship, still holding the test of time.  Even when both characters were off the show, fans were still talking about them and rooting for them.

I hope you enjoyed my list and feel free to post your own thoughts and comments about the ships on Beverly Hills, 90210.  Thanks for reading and happy viewing!
