“Get a life…get a clue…”

Eileen is a mystery-thriller film that released on January 30th 2024 on demand. It previously had a theatrical release on December 1st 2023. It stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anne Hathaway, and Marin Ireland. The films runs for an hour and thirty-eight minutes.

Set in the 1960’s, a lonely woman who works at a prison becomes friends with a glamorous woman named Rebecca, who later reveals a dark secret that puts them both in danger.

Eileen has two talented leads and a decent enough premise to work with, but does it deliver as a thriller? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Highlights the 1960’s with gorgeous fashion.

I really liked Anne Hathaway’s wardrobe in this one and thought every piece successfully channeled the era with elegance. The muted lighting added to the moody vibe and worked well with the time period. There wasn’t a lot going on for the majority of this film, but it was pretty to look at…

Two strong performers.

They’re the main reason why I tuned in and they’re also why I stuck around for as long as I did. I’m a fan of both actresses and thought they portrayed interesting characters with lots of potential, but unfortunately we never got enough layers for either one.

That being said, they worked with what they had and kept me watching until the end.

The Cons:

Super sluggish pacing.

I’m all for a good slow burn thriller, but this film was painfully slow. I felt like I was waiting for something to really happen for the majority of the movie and when we finally got to the twist, I was too exhausted to care. 

The twist was OK, but it could have been so much better and I guess I was hoping for these two to really go off the rails to redeem this film. I also wasn’t a fan of the ending and thought it left everything too open-ended, which was extremely frustrating.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

I really like both actresses and dug the vibe of this film. I just feel like we’re getting way too many films billed as “thrillers” lately that don’t really offer much in that department. Eileen had some potential, but it felt really disjointed at times.
