Spoiler-Free Review of “Susie Searches” on Demand: A Dark Comedy I Didn’t Know I Needed!

“I want to solve the unsolvable…”

Susie Searches released on demand on June 29th 2023. The dark comedy thriller stars Kiersey Clemons, Alex Wolff, Rachel Sennott, Isaac Cole Powell, and Ken Marino. It runs for an hour and forty-five minutes.

Susie has always loved mysteries and true crime, but when her own podcast fails to bring in listeners, she seizes the opportunity to take on a case involving a missing student on campus, but things quickly spiral out of control when she gains more popularity than she was ready for.

Here is the trailer:

Susie Searches is a fantastic mix of Veronica Mars and Ingrid Goes West, delivering with an addicting mystery and plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

Not afraid to take some risks…

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this film, but I was pleasantly surprised when it took some dark twists as the movie progressed. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about this, but I love that it went for something new and unique rather than recycling the same material we have seen again and again with female sleuths.

This movie was fresh and thoroughly entertaining because of this and I thought the performances were really good. Kiersey Clemons commanded the screen and it’s always great to see Rachel Sennott and Ken Marino in pretty much anything. They added to the dark comedy aspects, helping this film feel a little lighter.

Not predictable.

I was fully captivated by this movie and I can honestly say that I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. This film descended into darkness on several occasions and really took a magnifying glass to the dangers of wanting internet popularity without hitting us over the head with it.

I thought the pacing was spot on and that ending was really fantastic!

The Cons:

Has an identity crisis at times…

This film really couldn’t make up its mind about what it wanted to be. I personally didn’t mind the switch in genres and actually thought it made the movie better, but it was a little erratic at times. In a way, I actually think that this mirrored the indecision going on within Susie so I can’t really fault it that much, but be prepared to have things change up on you without any warning.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Pig” on Hulu: Unique and Effective Storytelling

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I’m looking for a pig…”

Pig originally premiered on July 16th 2021 and is now currently available to stream on Hulu. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin.

After his beloved pig is stolen from his home out in the wilderness, a truffle hunter attempts to track down his pig in Portland.

Here is the trailer:

Pig tells a compelling story in a unique way, focusing more on the quiet moments to explore tragedy and grief without hitting us over the head with what it wants to say. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A performance worth talking about…

I’ve seen Nicolas Cage in a lot of great films and this role was very different and unique. His performance was so believable and real even when he wasn’t saying anything at all. He immediately drew you in and when moments of true emotion were expressed, I was so completely moved by what I witnessed.

Sheer perfection…

A moving story that truly makes an impact.

This film was different than anything I have ever watched. I can’t even make a comparison to something else because it’s one of those films you just have to experience for yourself. The journey may seem strange at times, but it is worth it and it does a great job of connecting you to characters without making its themes too obvious.

The film recognizes that the audience is right there along with them for the emotional journey and allows us to make our conclusions about things.

The Cons:

The trailer is misleading…

Even when I turned this film on, Hulu described it as a thriller drama. When I first watched the trailer a few months back, it almost gave off a horror vibe and I didn’t really know what to expect from this movie. That’s not necessarily a con because I still enjoyed what I watched and was pleasantly surprised by it, but some viewers may be slightly confused when they actually get to the core of this movie because it is very different and perhaps there isn’t even really a trailer to explain what makes this movie actually tick.

This was such a compelling and consuming watch!

Nicolas Cage is beyond incredible and I am so emotionally changed by what I witnessed.

This is a movie that really sticks with you long after it’s over. It wasn’t what I expected, but it managed to tell a story in such an interesting way and I highly recommend it.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Old” on Demand: Creepy Concept

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Sounds like a great memory for us…”

Old originally released in theaters back on July 23rd 2021. The M. Night Shyamalan thriller is now available to watch on demand. The film stars Vicky Krieps, Gael García Bernal, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Embeth Davidtz. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-eight minutes.

Several families meet on a tropical vacation when they all end up being invited to the same secluded beach. However, things start to go horribly wrong when it appears that the island is somehow making people age at a rapid rate as they race against the clock to figure out a way off the island.

Here is the trailer:

Old creates an unsettling vibe with a horrifying concept, but does the film check off enough boxes to be worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A mystery that reels you in with an incredible setting.

I can always tell how much I like a movie based on how much I am paying attention. This is one of those movies that hooked me from the start. The setting is beyond breathtaking and the concept is really unique and horrifying. I needed to understand what was happening and I could not look away while I was watching.

The way this film was shot was so well done and the eerie soundtrack really elevated it that much more for me.

Something truly different.

It’s really hard to come up with something original and fresh these days. The film is inspired by the book, Sandcastle and I think that it truly managed to accomplish something new. The kind of horror we witnessed was different and yet it was just as disturbing (if not more so) than some of the more gruesome and terrifying things I have seen.

That scene in the cave though…yikes!

The Cons:

Cringe-worthy dialogue at times and not enough character development…

This was really frustrating because we actually got a fantastic cast to watch. However, the dialogue was just a little bit too on the nose for me. I’m all for well-placed hints, but some of the ones we got were beyond ridiculous. The audience can figure this out on their own…

I also think that the characters really needed to be fleshed out so much more. We got sprinkles of it toward the end of the movie, but I just wanted more especially since I loved the overall concept so much.

Mixed thoughts on the ending.

I think this is one of those movies that people will either really love or really hate. I was drawn in completely and once we got to the ending, I didn’t want the credits to come because I had so many thoughts going through my head. This really made me think, but I’m still not sure how I felt about the ending. I just had too many questions at the end that weren’t fully answered.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

I could not stop watching this movie and I think that it did truly present us with something new and different. This movie really makes you think a lot about things and it explored a new kind of horror in an effective way.

I have a checklist of things that could have been improved and I wanted so much more for the characters, but overall I really was surprised by how much I actually liked this movie.

I think that there will be a lot of mixed reviews and different opinions on this but I think the film creates a conversation worth having.
