Spoiler-Free Review of “Wednesday” Season 2 Part 1 on Netflix: Loses Some of Its Magic

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s been an eventful summer…”

Wednesday season 2, part 1 premiered on August 6th on Netflix with four episodes available to stream now. The remaining four episodes will release on September 3rd. The supernatural drama series stars Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Each episode is approximately 55-60 minutes.

While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams finds herself caught up in another mystery that threatens someone close to her.

Here is the trailer:

Wednesday season 2 loses some steam this time around with dragged out pacing and a plot that seems all too familiar now. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Jenna Ortega is as wickedly charming as ever!

She’s the best part of the series and probably the only reason I kept watching season 2. I think she was born for this role and she is excelling once again. That being said, I’d like to see some more growth for her character, but so far she is lighting up the screen in the best way possible.

I also like that other characters are getting some more screen time this time around. It seemed like some characters were merely there as an afterthought in season 1. I just don’t want the show to shift away from Wednesday too much because this is her show, but I’ve enjoyed some of the other characters and there were a few fun surprises too.

The Cons:

Dragged out with super long episodes.

I don’t think they were that long in season 1, but maybe I was just enjoying my watch more? It took me a while to get through part 1 of season 2. I remember binge-watching season one effortlessly so this was disappointing.

It just seemed so slow and dragged out. I also feel like the mystery is watered down this time around and it’s a plot I’ve seen a million times before on other teen mystery/fantasy shows. I’m hoping that things turn around in the second half of the season but so far I am losing interest.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this…

Wednesday (Season 2, Part 1) is Nancy Drew-esque, feeling a little stale and dragged out with its mystery.

Jenna Ortega is as brilliant as ever, but I’d love to see something extreme to pull me back in for the second half of the season.

Spoiler-Free Review of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” on Netflix: An Addicting YA Mystery

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Whoever it was might still be out there…”

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder released on August 1st 2024 on Netflix will all six episodes available to stream now. The YA mystery thriller series (based on the Holly Jackson novel of the same name) stars Emma Myers, Zain Iqbal, Asha Banks, Henry Ashton, and Carla Woodcock. Each episode runs for approximately 44-50 minutes.

A teenage girl named Pip decides to investigate the disappearance of Andie Bell from years ago for a class project. With a personal connection to the case, she questions whether or not Andie’s boyfriend, Sal, was truly responsible, leading her down a dangerous path to the truth.

Here is the trailer:

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a clever mix of Nancy Drew meets Veronica Mars with a decent enough mystery of its own to explore. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A mystery worth digging into!

I did read the novel, but it’s been quite a few years since then so my memory was a little fuzzy on certain details. This wasn’t a bad thing; however, because I was able to invest in the mystery with fresh eyes and I thought it was a solid one. There were a lot of layers to it and I thought that each episode did just enough at the end to keep me coming back for more, making this series extremely easy to binge-watch.

Emma Myers gives a convincing performance.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure if she was the Pip I pictured from the book, but as the episodes continued, she started to grow on me more and more. I think the actress did a fantastic job.

The other supporting characters were likable enough, but she was the only one that truly stood out to me. While she didn’t have the sassy comebacks of Veronica Mars or the inquisitive charm of Nancy Drew, there was an honest intention to her character that made her seem very realistic.

The Cons:

One scene I could have done without in episode 5…

There will be no spoilers in this review, but I would recommend caution when you get to episode 5. You’ll know it when it’s coming, but be mindful of that. This series was nearly perfect for me except for that.

DON’T TAKE THE JOB…

It was only supposed to be temporary…but when Olivia Crewe accepts a new position that seems too good to be true, she soon discovers that twelve other girls previously had the same job as her. Only none of them lasted for more than thirty days. No notice. Nothing…right before they mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Wednesday” on Netflix: Jenna Ortega is Fantastic

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Emotion equals weakness…”

Wednesday premiered on November 23rd on Netflix with eight episodes available to stream now. The supernatural drama series stars Jenna Ortega, Christina Ricci, Gwendoline Christie, Emma Myers, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Each episode is approximately 48-50 minutes.

While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams finds herself caught up in a mystery involving her parents from twenty-five years ago.

Here is the trailer:

Wednesday is addicting in all the right ways with an interesting mystery and wickedly fun premise. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

All hail, Jenna Ortega!

I expected her to be really good in this role, but she was even better than I could have hoped for. She was the BEST part of the series. This may be my favorite role by her yet. She does a fantastic job of paying tribute to the character while really putting her own spin on her as well.

I enjoyed the other characters as well and it was so wonderful seeing Christina Ricci in this one too for obvious reasons.

Emma Myers was a scene-stealer as Wednesday’s roommate along with Thing. Even though a lot of the characters fit into tropes, they were still a lot of fun to watch and I enjoyed the supporting characters more in this one than I typically do with other teen supernatural dramas.

Easy to binge-watch with very entertaining moments.

I enjoyed the sleuth-mystery approach to this series and even though we got to see some of the iconic characters from the Addams family, this was clearly Wednesday’s show and we stayed true to that, which I appreciated.

I loved each episode and the typical teen moments were actually really entertaining because of Wednesday’s reaction to them. The pacing was a little slow at first, but it improved significantly as the episodes continued. By the time I got to episode three, I was completely hooked.

The Cons:

Predictable at times with your typical teen drama.

I saw the ending reveal coming and I thought some things were easy to figure out, but I still enjoyed everything. There was also some typical teen drama in this series with another love interest triangle. In a lot of ways, this show was like a mashup of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Nancy Drew. I love both of those series so that’s not really a con, but some of the moments of drama could have easily appeared in any show on The CW.

That being said, the drama wasn’t overdone so it didn’t take away from the series that much at all.

So am I in or out?

Jenna Ortega is perfection!

This show was so entertaining and really put a unique spin on The Addams Family, allowing Wednesday to truly shine.
