Spoiler-Free Review of “Fear the Night” on Demand: Maggie Q Shines in “You’re Next” style Thriller

“Do all you can to survive…”

Fear the Night released on demand on July 21st 2023. The horror-thriller film stars Maggie Q, Kat Foster, Gia Crovatin, and Ito Aghayere. It runs for approximately 90 minutes.

Tess, a war veteran with a jaded past, has mixed feelings about attending a bachelorette party in the middle of nowhere, but when a group of masked intruders show up to do them harm, she must figure out a way to survive the night.

Fear the Night reminds us that it’s never a good idea to mess with Maggie Q, bringing us some bad-ass and bloody moments worth cheering about it. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

She’s the Queen for a reason!

Maggie Q is one of my all-time favorite actresses. I’d pretty much watch her in anything and every single time she appears on screen, she reminds us just how talented and bad-ass she is.

She is so good in horror films and I love when she gets the opportunity to play to her strengths. This movie is your standard home invasion thriller in a lot of ways, but it felt so much better at times because of its leading lady and I almost felt like this movie was made just for me. Seriously, I loved it!

She was the best part of this movie and did not disappoint! I hope that she continues to play roles like this in the future because she’s so good at them.

My kind of thriller…

I LOVE horror-thriller films like this. Give me a girls trip or a party gone wrong with some bad-ass ladies out for blood. In a lot of ways, this film reminded me of a mix between You’re Next and Black Christmas (2019). There were some really satisfying moments sprinkled in with plenty of intensity. There were a few really brutal kills too that caught me by surprise.

Some questionable decisions…

It seemed like the bad guys made a lot of dumb decisions throughout this movie. Maybe that was intentional to really lean into the whole girl power vibe, but I was scratching my head during a few moments.

I was a little confused about some of the tension in the beginning of the film between Tess and the other characters. I didn’t need this movie to be longer than it was, but a few more details would have been helpful.

I also just need to say that Tess was pretty much the only redeemable character. It was hard to root for some of the others because they were just so awful…

On another note, the ending didn’t really gel with the rest of the movie. I get the point of it completely, but I think the film had the opportunity to end in a few different ways that might have packed more of a punch.

I’m in!!!

Maggie Q delivers in this satisfying thriller that will have you cheering for her from start to finish.

If you enjoy home invasion thrillers with strong female leads, you’ll find plenty to appreciate in this film.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Pivoting” on Fox: Dream Cast gives us plenty of laughs

“We have to live our best lives now…”

Pivoting premiered on January 9th 2022 on Fox and Hulu. The comedy series stars Maggie Q, Ginnifer Goodwin and Eliza Coupe. Episodes air weekly and run for approximately 22-24 minutes.

Set in Long Island, New York, three best friends deal with the death of the fourth member of their group, as they come to the realization that they need to make some drastic changes in their lives while they still have time.

Pivoting immediately gives off vibes of Bad Moms, Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives, as these three fantastic ladies bring a lot of laughs to the table. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

I can’t get enough of this trio!

I tuned into this show because I absolutely love Maggie Q and I will pretty much watch her in anything. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this show right from the start and the major reason why is because of the talent of these three ladies.

This show is witty and smart and it was a breath of fresh air.  More please!

A familiar premise but great delivery.

I’ve seen this type of show before but that doesn’t matter because I think this show is a true gem. The interaction between the three main characters just works effortlessly and the comedy didn’t feel forced, which often happens when I watch network sitcoms. So far it’s off to a great start!

The separate plots need some work…

I personally preferred the banter and the moments when the three main characters were together to their individual plots. There was nothing really wrong with them, but they felt a little generic and the true magic seemed to happen when they were all together. That might just be because the show is still trying to find its identity and what really works, but I’m confident that we will get there.

If you’re looking for a lighter comedy to indulge in, you’ve come to the right place. These three ladies deserve to be in the spotlight and so far I am loving this comedy gold. 

I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Kate” on Netflix: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a Bad-Ass Queen

“Take control over your own life…”

Kate premiered on Netflix on September 10th 2021. The action thriller film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Woody Harrelson, and Miku Martineau. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

An assassin based in Japan learns that she has been poisoned and only has 24 hours left to live, as she attempts to take revenge on her enemies while protecting an innocent girl caught in the crossfire.

Kate follows an action formula we have seen many times before, but it does have the talented Mary Elizabeth Winstead leading the way. Does this film do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the best part of the movie.

I am already a huge fan of hers, but wow does she deliver in this film! She is so convincing and bad-ass. I rooted for her the entire time and she could give any other assassin a run for their money. She does not hold anything back, but she also reveals some heartfelt moments as well which made me connect to her character a lot. More please!

Plenty of flashy action to go around.

If you are looking for lots of fight scenes, you are in the right place. I loved the touch of pop music thrown in which channeled The CW’s Kung Fu in a lot of ways. The use of vibrant colors also helped make these scenes really stand out. Mary Elizabeth Winstead certainly got a workout in!

Not super original…

I’ve seen this type of movie before and much like Maggie Q’s recent The Protege, the plot is just kind of okay, which is kind of frustrating because it wastes the talent of these two actresses. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Kate is a great character and she is ruthless with her kills, but I’ve seen this type of movie before and it doesn’t really do anything new or unique. It lacks some of the outrageous humor from Crank, but it does have some heartwarming moments thrown in with the unlikely friendship formed.

I’m in about 75 percent…

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is fantastic and deserves a watch. If you are looking for a quick action thriller, you will find plenty to enjoy. I just wanted a little bit more substance from the movie because the character and performance overshadowed the plot.

Overall, this was a fun watch and I would recommend it if you like revenge action thrillers.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Protégé” in Theaters: Don’t Mess with Maggie Q!

“You taught me how to find things that didn’t want to be found…”

The Protégé premiered in theaters on August 20th 2021. The revenge thriller film stars Maggie Q, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Keaton. It is approximately 1 hour and fifty minutes long.

Anna was rescued as a child in Vietnam by an assassin. She develops her own skills as a talented assassin over the years, proving to be the best of the best. After her mentor is killed, she seeks out revenge, leaving a pile of bodies everywhere she goes.

The Protege brings our beloved Maggie Q back to the screen to show off her fighting skills, giving us plenty of action along the way. But does this film do anything truly unique and is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

All hail Maggie Q!

Maggie Q is one of my favorite actresses of all time. I loved her in the show Nikita and she really goes all out in every film, committing herself completely to each and every role. But she’ll always be the fashionable assassin to me and that’s what she got to play in this film.

Her fashion was so on point (seriously I want every single outfit from the film) and she showed off her fighting skills and then some. She is the BEST part of this movie.

Lots of action.

The fight scenes are brutal and really entertaining to watch. I have seen a lot of films before featuring a female assassin, but Maggie Q reminds us why she is the queen of the assassins. She is so incredible to watch on screen and she somehow makes even the most violent scenes watchable. The choreography behind the fight scenes was really well done.

Revenge thriller by the numbers…

The plot was lacking in a lot of ways for me. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it just felt very predictable and generic in a way. The fight scenes kept the pace going, but the moments in-between felt uninspiring, which was really disappointing.

No real character development.

Maggie Q deserves a lot more here. We do get glimpses into her past, but we don’t explore her present fully. It just felt like we were jumping from one scene to the next without really understanding her character.

Several of the sub-plots also just went away, which made me wonder why we even spent any time on them…

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

I’m in for Maggie Q. Her wardrobe was incredible, the fight scenes were out of this world, and I’m always thrilled to watch her in pretty much anything.

That being said, she deserved a better film. While the action was entertaining enough to make this an OK watch, it could have been a lot better so that was somewhat frustrating.

Overall, I was entertained, but I just wanted more!
