Spoiler-Free Review of “Spirited” on Apple TV+: One too many musical numbers…

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“We are in the business of change…”

Spirited premiered on Apple TV+ and is showing in select theaters as of November 18th 2022. The holiday musical film (inspired by A Christmas Carol) stars Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer. It runs for approximately two hours and seven minutes.

The Ghost of Christmas Present takes on the challenge of trying to redeem an “Unredeemable,” when he starts to contemplate his own past, present, and future in the process.

Here is the trailer:

Spirited is jam-packed with musical numbers and an all-star cast, but did we really need another version of A Christmas Carol? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds make a good team.

I was slightly worried that they would feel mismatched in this, but once the film got going, I really enjoyed watching them together on screen. There was some fun banter and some entertaining moments sprinkled into the mix.

Octavia Spencer stole the show; however, and played my favorite character by far. She continues to be such a compelling presence in every film she’s in and this one was no exception.

Attempts to put a spin on the traditional story.

This film was not afraid to admit its inspiration and while it didn’t come close to Scrooged or even Mickey’s Christmas Carol, it did put a unique twist on things to freshen up the story. I’m not sure it all worked, but the intention was there.

The Cons:

Way too many musical numbers…

Honestly, they were so distracting and oddly placed. With the exception of one musical number that I actually thoroughly enjoyed, the other ones felt forced and awkward. Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell are not natural singers, which is fine, but every single time I started to connect to the story, the magic was broken when we burst into another unnecessary song, which also made the runtime of this film go on for over two hours…

The tap-dancing was on point though!

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

Spirited has some entertaining moments and puts forth a valiant effort to do something different with A Christmas Carol, but the excessive musical numbers get in the way of real entertainment.

If you’re looking for a new holiday film to watch this year, I’d recommend Falling for Christmas or Violent Night instead.

A VACATION TO DIE FOR…

Blood Rose Island Ad

When sisters, Nina and Gemma are vacationing in Hawaii with their friends, they get invited to an exclusive party on a private island that seems too good to be true. There’s only one rulethey can’t miss their ferry at midnight or they’ll have to wait until morning to leave the island. Only they didn’t realize that breaking this rule meant they would be hunted down on the island one by one.

Who will make it off the island alive?

I hope you enjoy my new island thriller!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Adam Project” on Netflix: Family Friendly Time Travel Adventure

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Time travel exists…you just don’t know it yet.”

The Adam Project premiered on March 11th 2022 on Netflix. The sci-fi action film stars Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldaña, Mark Ruffalo, Catherine Keener and Braxton Bjerken. It runs for an hour and forty-five minutes.

A time traveling pilot named Adam travels back to the year 2022 and recruits his twelve year old self to help him with his mission.

Here is the trailer:

The Adam Project is very much Back to the Future meets Flight of the Navigator with a talented cast and some heartfelt moments sprinkled in. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Genuine moments.

I actually really liked the heartfelt moments in this one. This was a story about family relationships in a lot of ways and I think that when the film took the time to actually develop these bonds, it found its strength. The performances were all genuine and Jennifer Garner really did a great job with her portrayal in particular.

Flashy entertainment.

There’s enough action to keep you invested and the movie is under two hours which helped as well. There are some flashy effects embedded into the fight scenes that make this an entertaining ride for the younger generation in particular.

The Cons:

Not a lot of originality…

The film takes the time to make references to some time traveling films but it doesn’t really manage to do anything unique to set itself apart from them. It just felt like a mashup of all of them, which was slightly disappointing.

I also thought there was a lot of set-up in the beginning and the majority of the humor did not land for me. A lot just seemed really forced and it almost felt like they were merely phoning it in for this one…

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

This is a family friendly film and it checks off a lot of boxes you expect to see in a time travel action film, but I just wanted a lot more from it.

Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer are a dream team!

I am a huge fan of Jodie Comer and I absolutely adore her on Killing Eve. I was really excited that she was going to be in this film and it was fun to see a different side of her. I thought these two made a great team. They had lots of chemistry and it helped elevate the movie even more for me.

Heartwarming and hilarious.

I found myself smiling throughout the entire movie. I just felt happy watching this and there were so many little moments in-between that really spoke to me. I expected this movie to be funny, especially with Ryan Reynolds leading the way, but it was also really charming and inspiring.

Awesome cameos and references.

There will be no spoilers in this review, but the cameos and references were so much fun. I was literally cheering with one of them and I think you will thoroughly enjoy them as well!

The Cons:

I don’t really have any…

The movie just worked in every way. As long as you don’t take it too seriously and expect an extreme action movie, you will enjoy it. Don’t go into it with any expectations. I loved every aspect of this movie and I would watch it again.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 100 percent!

This movie was fun, hilarious, entertaining, and romantic. It had something for everyone in it. I loved all of the little moments sprinkled in and the entire cast did an exceptional job.

I highly recommend this movie and can’t wait to watch it again!
