Spoiler-Free Review of “Time Cut” on Netflix: Hits Us Over the Head with 2000’s Nostalgia

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“One single moment in time can change everything…”

Time Cut released on Netflix on October 30th 2024. The sci-fi slasher film stars Madison Bailey, Antonia Gentry, and Griffin Gluck. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty minutes.

A teenage girl in 2024 accidentally time travels back to 2003 right before the “Sweetly Slasher” murders her sister, giving her a chance to set things right and save her life.

Here is the trailer:

Time Cut is yet another entry into the time travel horror genre, but does it come close to films like Totally Killer and Happy Death Day? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Cute concept.

OK, so it’s been done before, but I’m still always up for a feel-good slasher film overloaded with bubble gum pop and this one fit the bill. Time Cut was on point with the 2000’s nostalgia (although they did force it down our throats on more than one occasion). However, I can’t fault any character who has a Buffy the Vampire Slayer poster displayed in her room and the fashion and music complimented the vibe well.

Stronger second half.

I was having some trouble connecting to this one initially, but I have to say that the second half was a lot stronger and redeemed itself in a lot of ways. There was more action and a twist thrown in (although I saw it coming a mile away). The ending was fine as well.

The Cons:

Needed more violence and gore.

This film is billed as a slasher and I was expecting it to deliver in this department to give us a nice balance, but everything felt so watered down. There were barely any scenes with the killer and the ones we got were just kind of meh. I didn’t need a complete gore fest, but other films within this genre did a much better job here.

Bland characters.

The acting was just kind of OK in this one and I wasn’t really connected to either character. I appreciated the bond between sisters, but this could have been fleshed out a lot more to make us more invested. We glossed over some layers that had some potential, but they never made a real impact on me.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Time Cut should have been an absolute blast, but it felt like a watered down knock-off of Totally Killer. There was some solid 2000’s nostalgia, but ultimately I needed this film to dig a little deeper and lean more into the slasher side of things to keep me invested.

It’s fine for a quick watch, but it paled in comparison to similar films in this genre.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Time Cut in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking my Top 10 Films of 2023: Which Movies Made The Cut?

It’s that time of year again! As we get closer and closer to approaching 2024, I thought it would be the perfect time to count down my Top 10 Films of 2023.

There are still a lot of movies that I have not seen yet, but I wanted to highlight some of my favorites of the year so far!

My Top 10 Films of 2023 are:

10

Totally Killer

If horror comedy films like Happy Death Day and Freaky are your jam, you’ll find plenty to love in Totally Killer, featuring out of this world performances by both Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt.

9

The Passenger

Kyle Gallner gives the performance of his career in this dark and emotional film that was one of the most unique entries to cinema I have watched all year. Moving and resonating.

8

Barbie

The movie event of the year! Barbie was so much fun! Ryan Gosling gave one of my favorite performances of the year and I loved the humor sprinkled into this bubble gum pop world.

7

Thanksgiving

Halloween isn’t the only holiday featuring amazing slasher films. Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving channeled 90’s slashers to perfection with plenty of gore and twists around each corner.

6

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The perfect blend of nostalgia for the generation that grew up playing these classic video games mixed with tons of cute and fun moments for kids now, making this a family friendly film worth your time. Plus, Jack Black KILLS it as Bowser and I think I’ll be singing “Peaches” for a very long time.

5

Plane

Every now and then, there is a non-stop action film that leaves me cheering and Plane is that movie for 2023. I loved it from start to finish and I’ve already re-watched it several times. It’s filled with adrenaline and plenty of bad-ass moments!

4

Unseen

An absolute gem that shouldn’t fly under the radar. Unseen is on the shorter side, but it hooks you from the start and features two strong female leads. If you enjoy simple, but effective thrillers, this one is for you!

3

Scream 6

I didn’t know how I felt about Scream 6 switching up its setting and main character, but it all worked perfectly, making this such a wonderful surprise. It carved its way into the franchise without holding back, creating a bloody good time for Scream fans everywhere.

2

Evil Dead Rise

Maybe not for everyone, but Evil Dead Rise presents horror fans with gore galore and introduces us to a new bad-ass female lead. I love the Evil Dead franchise and although this one had a very different feel to it, I couldn’t look away and that title card will be haunting me for years to come…

Honorable Mentions:

Leave the World Behind

Missing

No One Will Save You

Sick

The Blackening

Drum roll please…

1

Bottoms

Raunchy, laugh-out-loud funny, and so entertaining! Bottoms is my favorite film of the year! It’s been a long time since I truly fell in love with a teen comedy and this one brought that genre back to life and then some!

I hope to see more films from 2023 soon, but I hope you enjoyed the list!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Totally Killer” on Prime Video: A Feel Good Slasher Flick

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s not 1987 anymore…”

Totally Killer released on Prime Video on October 6th 2023. The horror comedy film stars Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Liana Liberato, Lochlyn Munro, and Julie Bowen. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

The “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns 35 years after murdering three teens around Halloween. When Jamie faces off against the killer, she winds up accidentally time traveling back to 1987, teaming up with her teenage mother to take the killer down.

Here is the trailer:

Totally Killer successfully channels vibes from Happy Death Day and The Final Girls while finding its own identity along the way, presenting us with fantastic music, welcomed references, and some bloody fun. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt are incredible!

Wow…what a team up! I honestly LOVED the entire cast and thought that even the supporting characters were a lot of fun. There were plenty of familiar faces in this one, but Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt stole the show.

They were both so fantastic and I hope to see them both in some more horror films soon because they kick ass and then some!

A self-aware slasher.

It’s no secret that my favorite genre is the slasher one and I love when films like this recognize what they are and just embrace their identity fully. The movie references were so much fun and they didn’t overdo them, which I was initially slightly worried about.

The music was an absolute blast and there was a good balance of dry humor and slasher fun, which worked seamlessly.

Plus, that opening scene was INCREDIBLE!!!

Please make more films like this!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Loses a touch of steam in the middle.

The pacing was mostly on point, but I thought that the opening and ending were the strongest parts. We fell off a little bit somewhere in the middle, but I wouldn’t say this was a major con.

I also wanted a little bit more in the slasher department. We got some decent kills, but this film definitely leaned more toward the comedy side of horror comedy.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

Totally Killer is a bloody good time!

Effortless fun and a cast to die for.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Totally Killer in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
