Spoiler-Free Review of “Dangerous Liaisons” (2022) on Netflix: The Twisted Bet is Back

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“How far would you go to make a name for yourself?”

Dangerous Liaisons (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) released on July 8th 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix. The French remake film stars Paola Locatelli, Simon Rérolle, Ella Pellegrini, and Jin Xuan Mao. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-two minutes.

An innocent girl falls for bad boy, Tristan, as a dangerous and seductive bet is made that could ruin the lives of everyone involved.

Here is the trailer:

Dangerous Liaisons attempts to bring something new to the familiar plot, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Gorgeous to look at.

The setting was absolutely gorgeous and the cast was pretty as well, which made this film aesthetically pleasing. I liked the surfer angle for our newest bad boy, mostly because we got to take in some gorgeous beach views in the South of France.

A tale as old as time…

There have been a number of adaptations of the 1782 novel over the years. My favorite version is Cruel Intentions by far, but this newest version still channeled the timeless plot that is both wickedly seductive and romantic at the same time. While I’m not sure that the film did anything that new or different, I still enjoy this type of plot and I think the characters executed it well.

The Cons:

I’m not sure we needed this film…

The film tried to do something new and relevant for today’s audience by introducing social media into the mix of a familiar plot. However, I’ve seen this spin done a million times and it rarely makes a unique impact. The story was pretty much the same, but this version also seemed really tame compared to Cruel Intentions.

Vanessa put forth a valiant effort as the Queen Bee, but she was no Sarah Michelle Gellar. I also had a hard time believing that Tristan was really a bad boy. He showed just how good he could be in the opening scene so there wasn’t much of a transformation by love here.

I also wanted this film to have a lot more edge and I think it paled in comparison to some of its predecessors in this category.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

This film was absolutely gorgeous, but the execution fell flat for me and I’m not sure that we needed another update of this film. I’d recommend re-watching Cruel Intentions instead…

THIS COMPETITION IS KILLER…

When former friends, Shay and Adriana team up to participate in a Halloween scavenger hunt with a cash prize, they temporarily put their differences aside to outsmart their opponents. However, they soon start to realize that a dangerous threat is playing their own version of the game, stalking them during each hunt.

Winning is now a necessity as their lives are at stake. As old wounds and memories re-surface, Shay and Adriana attempt to unmask the threat before the night is over, but soon learn that Scream Hunt is not done with them just yet…

My young adult horror thriller is out now! I hope you enjoy!
