Spoiler-Free Review of “Fear” (2023) on Demand: Your greatest fear is…

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Fear is very real…”

Fear is a horror film that released on April 25th 2023 on demand. The film had a limited theatrical release back in January 2023. It stars Joseph Sikora, Annie Ilonzeh, Ruby Modine, and T.I. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-five minutes.

A weekend getaway during the pandemic turns deadly when a group of friends reveal their greatest fears to one another.

Here is the trailer:

Fear has a creepy concept and a decent enough cast, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Hidden Empire Film Group

Solid cast.

Even though this film clearly had a lower budget, it actually had a recognizable cast that I was pretty excited about. The acting was solid enough and I would like to see some of these actors in more horror films in the future.

Some interesting ideas…

Sure, the fears coming to life concept has been done numerous times before, but I like it and I was hopeful that it would translate well in this film. I liked the setting for the film and the story behind it. I think this could have been explored more, but I was drawn in enough to keep watching.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Hidden Empire Film Group

Lacking in so many ways…

This was really frustrating because I really wanted to like this movie. I’ve seen too many horror films set during the pandemic and this one probably should have been released around that time if it wanted to make more of an impact.

The scares were really watered down and silly for the most part. I think that things improved by the time I got toward the end, but I was struggling with this for the majority of the film.

The characters were dull and uninspiring, which was also disappointing…especially since we got a good cast to work with. I honestly didn’t care about what happened to them and it was so obvious who would make it out alive, which made me care even less…

Also, we had a few interesting sub-plots going on and the film basically just abandoned them. I’m not sure why because I thought that these stories were more interesting than the rest of the film.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Hidden Empire Film Group

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

This movie was a watered down version of films I have seen before. It squashed its potential by taking a predictable approach that didn’t have a satisfying conclusion.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Fear (2023) in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Evil Dead Rise” in Theaters: Blood-Drenched Terror At Its Finest!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s called the Book of the Dead for a reason…”

Evil Dead Rise released in theaters on April 21st 2023. The latest entry to the Evil Dead franchise stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Nell Fisher, Gabrielle Echols, and Morgan Davies.

Beth goes to visit her sister and her family when a sinister evil is unleashed upon them, threatening to kill them all off one by one.

Here is the trailer:

Evil Dead Rise brings one of the greatest horror franchises back to life again with shocking gore and truly disturbing moments. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Does the franchise proud!

The Evil Dead franchise is one of my favorites of all time and I think it successfully launched a remake in 2013 that kept fans satisfied while creating something new and terrifying in the process. Well, the latest 2023 entry goes even further and presents us with a chilling and sinister film that flawlessly channels the original films while unleashing a new evil upon us that was an absolute joy to watch on the big screen.

The gore was out of this world, the scenes were each more terrifying than the next, and that title card will probably haunt me for years to come…

Images courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Electrifying performances.

Our two main leads were bad-ass and then some! Alyssa Sutherland was so shockingly amazing as a deadite and may be the most terrifying one of all time…

I absolutely loved the character of Beth as well and thought she really rocked the blood-soaked look with flair. There was pure magic between these characters and I was rooting for all of them in different ways.

The Cons:

I don’t have any…

A flawless masterpiece!!!

Seriously, the pacing was on point, the scenes were all so captivating and stunning to watch unfold, and the terrifying moments were truly extraordinary.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 1000 percent!!!

Chilling, gory, and wickedly entertaining!

I’ve been so incredibly excited to watch this film and it did not disappoint! What are you waiting for? See this on the big screen if you can!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Renfield” in Theaters: Nicolas Cage is a Boss you don’t want to cross…

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I need to get out of a toxic relationship…”

Renfield released in theaters on April 14th 2023. The vampire horror comedy film stars Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Brandon Scott Jones. It runs for an hour and thirty-three minutes.

After centuries of serving Dracula, Renfield realizes that he may have a new destiny, which requires him freeing himself from his demanding master.

Here is the trailer:

Renfield has a fun cast and some bloody charm, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

The Nics steal the show!

Both Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult were fantastic in this! Nicholas Hoult was charming and really hysterical and Nicolas Cage was…well…Nic freakin Cage! Both of them played their parts very well and put on a good show.

They were the best part of this film!

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

Some truly entertaining moments.

I loved the self-help aspect of this film even though I saw it a million times in the previews. The group members were really funny and contributed a lot to the humor in this. The film opened up in a strong way and even re-wrote the familiar story of Dracula with some fun twists.

We got plenty of fight scenes as well, which helped the pacing.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

Needed some more bite…

The movie was enjoyable overall, but I wanted a little more bite and edge. Everything just felt a little bit too safe and predictable. Some of the humor didn’t really land for me as well and I thought that some of the other supporting characters were just kind of meh…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

I’m in about 75 percent…

Renfield has its charms and is entertaining enough, but I wanted a little bit more in order for this film to pave its way into the horror comedy genre.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Renfield in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Hunt Her, Kill Her” on Demand: Brutal and Bad-Ass!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Ever worked in a place like this before?”

Hunt Her, Kill Her (formerly titled Night Shift) released on Demand on April 14th 2023. It previously had a limited theatrical release on March 3rd 2023. The horror-thriller film stars Natalie Terrazzino. It runs for approximately an hour and twenty-eight minutes.

Karen starts a new job as a night shift janitor, which quickly escalates into a fight for survival when several intruders break in.

Here is the trailer:

Hunt Her, Kill Her is a tense and violent thriller with a strong female lead and a simple formula that works. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Trauma One Entertainment

A terrifying premise that gets better and better with each scene!

I love when a simple thriller like this excels. It’s clear that this film had a lower budget and yet it used what it had and went for it without holding back. Wow! The setting and premise were really creepy, enhancing the overall tone of the film.

We didn’t get very much set-up and started off things rather quickly, never giving the audience a chance to come up for air. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and there were some moments that made my jaw drop in the best way possible.

Each scene built up so much intensity and there was a twist that made this film pop even more. In a lot of ways, this film reminded me of Open 24 Hours.

This was my type of thriller and then some!

Images courtesy of Trauma One Entertainment

A resourceful female lead to root for!

I love a strong Final Girl and when she can be ruthless and inventive with her kills, that makes me love her that much more. Terrazzino held her own and really dominated the screen. I was cheering for her the entire time and loved how bad-ass she was. Wow!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Trauma One Entertainment

I needed a few more details…

Don’t get me wrong, I love that we jumped right into things with minimal fluff and set-up, but I needed a little bit more to fill in some blanks. Once we got to the twist, I was scratching my head a little bit because I needed a touch more to truly appreciate everything. This wasn’t a major con, but I think it would have helped me connect to Karen even quicker if we got a few more layers earlier on.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Trauma One Entertainment

I’m in!!!

Hunt Her, Kill Her brings a night from hell to life with a fantastic performance by Natalie Terrazzino, keeping me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I’ve been anxiously waiting to watch this film and I was super bummed that it didn’t release in my local theater. I’m happy to report that this film exceeded my expectations! I absolutely loved it!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Play Dead” on Demand: Twisted Thriller Delivers

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Now it’s time to die…”

Play Dead released on Demand on April 7th 2023. The horror-thriller film stars Bailee Madison, Jerry O’Connell, Anthony Turpel, and Chris Lee. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

Chloe fakes her own death to break into a morgue, but quickly discovers that the coroner is involved in a dangerous business that is more deadly than she could have imagined.

Here is the trailer:

Play Dead is a fast-paced thriller filled with edge-of-your-seat moments that keep you invested from start to finish. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Voltage Pictures

A solid game of cat and mouse.

I personally love horror-thriller films like this. Our focus is mainly on Chloe as she winds up trapped in a morgue with a coroner with deadly secrets. There are so many intense moments in this film and it kept my undivided attention the entire time. Sometimes less is more and this film understood that, focusing on the little moments in-between that were terrifying enough on their own.

The pacing was also really on point. The movie was a touch longer than it needed to be, but I think they did a solid job with this and I never lost interest.

Images courtesy of Voltage Pictures

Bailee Madison is fierce and bad-ass!

I really loved her in The Strangers: Prey at Night and she was also just recently in the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin series, but she was absolutely terrific in this film and really commanded the screen. Much of our attention is focused on her and her alone and she really put forth a valiant effort here and I really hope that she does more films like this because I think that she will quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the horror genre.

Jerry O’Connell did a great job with his role as well.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Voltage Pictures

Far-fetched and outrageous at times…

I would manage your expectations in this department and expect things to be a little ridiculous and unbelievable at times. However, as long as you just go with it, you’ll have an entertaining watch.

There was one twist I saw coming a mile away, but I still thought this film had plenty going for it so I didn’t really mind at all.

So am I in or out?

Play Dead brings a terrifying premise to life with a strong female lead to root for and plenty of intense moments.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Scream VI” in Theaters: New Sequel Takes a Killer Bite Out of the Big Apple

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

What’s your favorite scary movie?

Scream VI released in theaters on March 10th 2023. The sixth installment of my favorite franchise of all time brings us close to my home as Ghostface terrorizes New York City. The slasher horror film stars Melissa Barrera, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jenna Ortega, Samara Weaving and Hayden Panettiere.

The Carpenter sisters are trying to start over in New York City, but Ghostface begins targeting those closest to them in this new sequel to the requel.

Here is the trailer:

Scream VI brings us a solid entry to the franchise with inventive kills, fantastic twists, and a few chase scenes to die for. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

Uses NYC in an effective way.

I was super excited that Scream was making its way to my state, but was slightly worried about how it would use this setting. Jason Takes Manhattan is one of my favorite slasher films, but Scream VI used NYC in a chilling and effective way, bringing us some edge-of-your-seat moments that were truly fantastic.

More please!

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

A cast to die for!

Sure, we were missing our star player, but this cast did such a wonderful job and I actually started to really care about these characters a lot more this time around.

Melissa Barrera was a SCREAM QUEEN and then some! Wow!

Our “legacy” characters really held their own as well and even stole the film at one point…

I don’t think I’ve cheered this much for a bunch of characters since Scream 2…and that had Queen SMG so that’s saying a lot!

The twists and reveals were also well-played and had me guessing! Loved them!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

I don’t really have any…

This should come as no surprise since I adore this franchise, but after thinking about it, I really loved every aspect of this movie. There was enough nostalgia and Easter eggs to keep fans happy while still keeping things fresh and new.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

I’m in 100 percent!

Already one of my favorite films of the franchise! Scream VI is bad-ass and beyond entertaining!

It’s safe to say I’ll be re-watching this one again and again!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Unseen” on Demand: Satisfying Thriller Worth Your Time

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s a miracle I got you…”

Unseen released on Demand on March 7th 2023. The horror-thriller film stars Midori Francis, Jolene Purdy, Michael Patrick Lane, and Missi Pyle. It runs for approximately an hour and sixteen minutes.

A gas station clerk named Sam receives a random phone call from a nearly blind stranger named Emily who has been abducted by her ex-boyfriend. Acting as a guide for Emily through her phone, Sam quickly becomes her only hope at survival.

Here is the trailer:

Unseen is a fantastic mix of See for Me and Alone with a fast-paced, intense premise and two likable leads. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Paramount Movies

No waiting!

Talk about starting off with a bang…

This film has minimal set-up and throws the audience into things with barely any warning. The pacing was on point and at barely an hour and twenty minutes long, I never looked at the time even once.

This film was filled with edge-of-your-seat moments and some touching ones as well without ever overdoing it. It all just worked in a simple and effective way, which is exactly the kind of thriller I love to see.

Images courtesy of Paramount Movies

Two strong female leads to root for.

I absolutely loved both of these leading ladies. They were both incredible and I actually really dug the fact that they seemed so normal. It just made their bond and quest for survival that much more intriguing.

Even though we had minimal set-up in the beginning of the film, we still got enough layers between these two as they continued to talk, which helped me care about them even more.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Paramount Movies

Far-fetched at times…

Sure, some of the characters were a little outrageous and there were some moments that had me scratching my head, but just go with it and you’ll enjoy the ride. It all added to the intensity so I’m not complaining too much here.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Paramount Movies

I’m in 100 percent!!!

Keep making horror-thrillers like this and I’ll keep watching them and so will a lot of other viewers!

Fast-paced, fierce, and absolutely FANTASTIC from start to finish!

I absolutely loved this film and highly recommend it.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Cocaine Bear” in Theaters: An Absolute Blast!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“This is your brain on drugs…”

Cocaine Bear released in theaters on February 24th 2023. The thriller-horror-action film (directed by Elizabeth Banks) stars Keri Russell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Ray Liotta, and Margo Martindale. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-five minutes.

After a bear consumes a large amount of cocaine, it goes on a killing spree in a Georgia forest.

Here is the trailer:

Cocaine Bear is a bloody delight with plenty of insane violence and humor that actually lands. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

The perfect balance of gore galore and laugh out loud moments.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE when a movie can accomplish this without skipping a beat. This movie was so much fun to watch from start to finish. It didn’t hold back in the violence department, but it also knew not to take itself too seriously at all, making this such an effortless watch.

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

The best ensemble I’ve seen in a while!

It didn’t matter how small their part was…EVERY single character was a lot of fun. The actors did a great job with the content. Usually in films like this, I’m not really rooting for anyone, but I actually cared about quite a few characters, which had me more invested.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

Don’t expect an amazing plot…

There were quite a few people in my theater who did not seem too thrilled with this film and I even saw a couple actually leave. I don’t know what they expected with this movie, but you won’t get a well-layered plot.

As long as you go into this understanding that this film is meant to be silly and outrageous, you’ll have a good time though.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

Bloody, bonkers, and an absolute blast!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Outwaters” on Demand: Trippy and Far-Out Found Footage Flick

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“It is weird out here…”

The Outwaters released in theaters on February 9th 2023 and is now currently available to watch on Demand or on Screambox. The found footage horror film stars Robbie Banfitch, Angela Basolis, Scott Schamell, and Michelle May. It runs for approximately an hour and fifty minutes.

A group of campers in the Mojave Desert start to experience weird sounds and hallucinations, leading them toward a descent into a never-ending nightmare.

Here is the trailer:

The Outwaters is bizarre and extreme with some terrifying moments, but is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Screambox

Visually stunning moments.

The use of light worked really well in this particular setting. There were some moments that were absolutely breathtaking to witness on screen. I enjoyed some of the camera visual effects and the use of sound was pretty unique here.

Extreme, jaw-dropping moments.

It definitely took a while to get there, but there were some gross and gory moments that chilled me to my core. I still have one particular image stuck in my head that will definitely be giving me a few unwanted nightmares…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Screambox

Uneventful first half…

Like most found footage films I have watched, absolutely nothing goes on for the first hour of this movie. I would have preferred to witness some more meaningful conversations between the characters so that I actually cared about what happened to them. I was really bored until we hit the hour mark.

Dizzy camera effects.

I have come to expect this with found footage films so I can’t really complain too much here, but I felt dizzy after a while. Even though I appreciated the use of sound over visual effects at times, a lot of the terrifying moments happened in complete darkness, which was a little disappointing. I’m also still not sure what really went on, which made this a confusing watch for me.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Screambox

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Trippy and horrifying with some genuinely disturbing content, but I wanted a lot more here.

This will be one of those movies that people either love or hate. If you enjoy found footage films, I think you’ll appreciate this entry, but if you’re not a fan of the genre, you don’t need to rush to see this one.

Spoiler-Free Review of “She Came from the Woods” in Theaters: Campy Fun

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You have to make the threat feel real..”

She Came from the Woods released in theaters on February 10th 2023. The horror-comedy film stars Cara Buono, Clare Foley, Spencer List, and William Sadler. It runs for approximately an hour and forty minutes.

Set in the 1980’s, a summer camp celebrates the end of its season by conducting a blood ritual, but things go horribly wrong when they accidentally unleash an evil spirit who hunts them down one by one.

Here is the trailer:

She Came from the Woods has a super fun premise and some bloody entertaining moments, but is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Mainframe Pictures

The horror-comedy moments are brilliant!

The best parts of this film involved the campy moments. There were some parts that had me laughing out loud. This film wasn’t afraid to be a little darker with its comedy, which worked in its favor. I loved the overuse of gore and the banter was actually a lot of fun once the film found its groove.

Strong second half.

I much preferred the second half of this movie to the first. It was really entertaining and even though some of the twists and reveals were a little out there, I just went along for the ride and enjoyed it. This film wasn’t afraid to kill off characters and it really put forth a valiant effort to channel films like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp while still finding a voice of its own.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Mainframe Pictures

Takes itself too seriously at times…

I personally loved the horror-comedy aspects of this film and even the trailer made it seem like this would be a campy good time. It did have moments of this, but the film also went off on several tangents and tried to be too serious.

The first half of this film was also really slow-moving. The dialogue was painful and the acting wasn’t great, but thankfully things picked up once the evil was unleashed…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Mainframe Pictures

I’m in about 75 percent…

B-movie campy horror fun with plenty of entertaining moments.

This film was far from perfect, but I think horror fans have a lot to enjoy with this one. I just wanted it to fully embrace the horror-comedy angle because that’s where the magic was, but overall I enjoyed my watch.
