Spoiler-Free Review of “Candy” on Hulu: Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey face off on Friday the 13th

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Who kills someone with an axe?”

Candy premiered on Hulu on May 9th 2022 with five episodes available to stream now. The drama series based on a true story stars Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey, and Pablo Schreiber. Each episode runs for approximately 45-48 minutes.

Based on a true story, we learn about Candy Montgomery and why she decided to kill her best friend back in 1980.

Here is the trailer:

Candy brings us a talented leading lady and a chilling case, but does this dramatization do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey are fantastic to watch.

The highlight of this series was the performances. Jessica Biel manages to make that awful wig look good somehow and Melanie Lynskey is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses. I just love her on Yellowjackets! Both actresses did a good job of pulling me in. I thought they were electric on screen.

The rest of the cast did a solid job too and we even got a fun cameo later on worth sticking around for.

Great start and the timing of the episodes.

I actually really liked the first episode of the series. I was pulled in right away and I wanted to know more about this murder, which took place on Friday the 13th in 1980, which is the year the first film was released. Really interesting!

The timing of the episodes also really worked in this show’s favor. There were five episodes that were released each day starting on May 9th. If this show aired weekly, I probably would have lost interest, but it managed to keep me coming back for more because of the daily release schedule, which was really smart on Hulu’s part.

The Cons:

Loses steam as the episodes continue…

This series was frustrating because it started off with a lot of potential and then quickly fell flat. The time jumps weren’t really seamless and things took a long time to develop. I also thought we were leading up to a really explosive finale and it was a little disappointing.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey are worth your time, but I was expecting a lot more with this one. The series is still watchable and it has its moments, but I would manage your expectations accordingly.
