Spoiler-Free Review of “The Flood” on Demand: Silly Fun

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“How did they get in here?”

The Flood released on demand on July 14th 2023. The horror film stars Casper Van Dien, Nicky Whelan, Louis Mandylor, and Devanny Pinn. It runs for approximately 92 minutes.

In the middle of a hurricane, several dangerous prisoners are transported to a local jail, but when gators enter the premises, they need to work together with the sheriff to make it out alive.

Here is the trailer:

The Flood is a super fun creature film with lots of entertaining moments. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Lionsgate Movies

Fun B-movie action.

As long as you accept that you are watching a standard B-movie, you’ll have a lot more fun with this one. I loved the absurd plot and action. There are a few recognizable faces in this film, which made it a blast too. Casper Van Dien is still a boss and I recently enjoyed Nicky Whelan in the shark flick, Maneater.

Decent premise.

It may not be that original, but it was entertaining. It’s pretty much a mash-up Crawl and Assault on Precinct 13 in a cheesy way and I think it worked for the most part. Gators don’t get as much love as sharks in film and I was happy to see another entry here for summer. More please!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Lionsgate Movies

Terrible CGI…

Like really, really bad. From the gators to the fake rain…wow. It left a lot to be desired. If you can look past that, then there is still plenty to enjoy here, however. Be prepared for some cringe-worthy dialogue and random slow motion fight scenes that are beyond silly as well.

The first half of the film was a little difficult to get through, but I will say that things drastically improved in the second half and I enjoyed it a lot more.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Lionsgate Movies

I’m in about 75 percent…

There’s plenty of cheesy fun gator attacks to indulge in here.

If you appreciate and enjoy B-movie creature flicks as much as I do, you’ll have a blast with this one.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Flood in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Quicksand” on Shudder: Solid Survival Suspense Film

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“We both need to be perfectly still…”

Quicksand released on Shudder on July 14th 2023. The survival thriller film stars Carolina Gaitan, Allan Hawco, and Sebastian Eslava. It runs for an hour and twenty-five minutes.

Sofia and Josh are thinking about getting a divorce when they go hiking together in a rainforest in Colombia, but they end up with bigger problems when they get trapped in quicksand with dangerous predators close by.

Here is the trailer:

Quicksand has plenty of intense and edge-of-your-seat moments with a familiar, but entertaining plot. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Shudder

Enough threats to keep us invested.

As if getting stuck in quicksand wasn’t horrifying enough, Sofia and Josh had to deal with a lot of other predators that had me squirming in my seat. There were plenty of intense moments in this one. I personally really like survival thrillers and this film did a good job of representing the genre with a few welcomed surprises.

Images courtesy of Shudder

Decent pacing.

I was worried that we might have to suffer through fluff-filled flashbacks to keep things moving, but the pacing worked really nicely in this film. The characters had enough time to hash things out while trying to figure out a way out of their situation. I never felt bored and I thought the actors gave us honest performances.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Shudder

A movie I’ve seen before…

I did enjoy this one quite a bit, but it’s a very familiar plot. I’ve seen plenty of survival thriller/horror flicks where the main couple are having problems and then they end up in a life-threatening situation in different settings.

That’s pretty much the case with this film, but it’s still entertaining. Just don’t expect anything too out there…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Shudder

I’m in about 75 percent…

A survival thriller worth your time with plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments.

This film was predictable, but it still checked off all the boxes to make this an enjoyable watch from start to finish.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Quicksand in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Girl Gone Bad” on Demand: Don’t mess with her girlfriend…

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I promise you I’ll be safe this weekend…”

Girl Gone Bad released on demand on July 11th 2023. The home-invasion horror film stars Alison Thornton, Mya Lowe, and Alex Zahara. It runs for approximately 92 minutes.

Samantha plans a romantic weekend for her girlfriend, but when an intruder breaks in, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse ensues.

Here is the trailer:

Girl Gone Bad takes an overdone premise and puts a unique spin on things to shake things up, but does it do enough to be worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of 4Digital Media

Starts off with a bang.

There was not much waiting around in this film at all. There was minimal fluff and we got right to the violence. I personally love when films start off like this. The initial pacing was great and there were a few gruesome moments worth nothing.

Cute spin on the home invasion genre.

This film wasn’t afraid to take a risk with its twist and I thought it was fairly interesting. Some things were really far-fetched, but I’m all for a film breaking outside the box of a genre to try something else to keep the audience invested.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of 4Digital Media

One-dimensional dialogue.

This really needed some serious attention. It was painful to listen to at times and repetitive. I was honestly expecting a lot more here. The actors were decent enough and did the best with what they were given, however.

Goes off track fast…

While this film started off with a lot of potential, it quickly ran out of steam and lost direction. I’m not sure what happened here, but it’s almost like the film forgot its intention and just started filling time for the hell of it. Don’t get me wrong…there were some really entertaining moments, but I think this film could have been a lot better if it had made some improvements with the progression of the plot.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of 4Digital Media

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Girl Gone Bad had a few killer twists, but it lost its way as the film progressed. Either way, if you’re looking for a quick “movie of the week” to fill your time, there’s enough here to enjoy.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” Season Two on Prime Video: Summer’s Back and Just as Wonderful!

*This is a spoiler-free review for season two so feel free to read on!*

“Nothing would ever be the same again…”

The Summer I Turned Pretty season two released on Prime Video on July 14th 2023 with the first three episodes available now. There will be eight episodes in total that will air weekly. The young adult drama series (based on the novel of the same name) stars Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, and Jackie Chung. Each episode runs for approximately 42-48 minutes.

Summer feels different this time around for Belly after suffering a tragic loss that has severely impacted her and everyone around her. After trying to re-connect with Conrad and Jeremiah, she gets tangled in a love triangle once again that isn’t so clear cut.

Here is the trailer:

The Summer I Turned Pretty was one of my favorite series of last year, bringing us plenty of emotional moments and a real depiction of growing up that just felt effortless and moving. Does season two do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

A coming-of-age series that gives you all the feels…

I love soapy teen dramas like Beverly Hills, 90210, One Tree Hill, and Melrose Place. But sometimes they can be over-the-top and really unrealistic. As much as I love them, I appreciate this series because it stays away from all of the crazy drama and focuses more on real characters who go through life-altering moments with honest reactions. It just feels fresh and organic without ever trying too hard and season two keeps that feeling going, which is important.

Images courtesy of Prime Video

A love triangle plot that doesn’t seem overdone…

Love triangles can be completely exhausting, but this series makes them feel brand new again. I love both Conrad and Jeremiah and I honestly don’t know who Belly should end up with because they both bring out different sides of her. Sure, there is melodrama between them all when things get heated, but this is the driving plot of the show and it keeps us invested during season two for sure.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

The flashbacks are really confusing at times.

I get that the series is trying to fill us in with what happened between last summer and this one, but the transitions don’t always work and I was often confused about where I was in the timeline. I’m hoping this improves as the episodes continue, but a lot is being jam-packed into these episodes and I want to get back to a natural sequence of events so I can appreciate everything going on more.

So am I in or out?

Spoiler-Free Review of “Full Circle” on Max: A Riveting Crime Thriller!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“It never begins…and thus it never ends…”

Full Circle premiered on Max on July 13th 2023 with the first two episodes available to stream now. There will be six episodes in total. Two episodes will release each week. The crime thriller mini-series stars Claire Danes, Timothy Olyphant, Zazie Beetz, and Dennis Quaid. Each episode runs for approximately 40-48 minutes.

A kidnapping in New York City connects several strangers, revealing long-held secrets along the way.

Here is the trailer:

Full Circle has a talented cast, an addicting premise, and plenty of layers to keep the audience coming back for more. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Max

All-star cast!

I’ve been waiting for Claire Danes to dominate the television screen again and she’s paired with Timothy Olyphant…talk about a dream come true! But that’s not all. We also have the charming Zazie Beetz and a number of other fantastic actors. There is a lot of talent here and I’m just hoping each character gets enough time to shine in six episodes. So far they are doing a great job and I’m waiting for Claire Danes to channel her inner Carrie Mathison already!

Images courtesy of Max

A solid hook.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this series at first, but by the time I got to the end of episode one, I was completely hooked and I was immediately pressing play on the next episode. I wish I didn’t have to wait for more episodes because this series is really addicting and I already have a lot of working theories.

This series doesn’t follow your typical crime thriller formula, but it is still doing enough to captivate our attention completely and I can’t wait for the rest of the puzzle pieces to come together. This is a consuming watch already and I can’t wait to see more!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Max

A lot to keep track of…

At one point I thought I was watching two different shows. Be prepared for a lot of sub-plots. I am confident that everything will connect by the end of each episode, but you do need to pay attention to this one. This style may not be for everyone, but so far it isn’t getting in the way of the crime mystery at the center.

Spoiler-Free Review of “As Certain as Death” on Demand: Killer Intervention

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“What did I do wrong?”

As Certain as Death released on demand on July 11th 2023. The horror film stars Cortney Palm, Lindsey Shaw, Hutch Dano, and Daniel Curtis Lee. It runs for 80 minutes.

A group of friends attempt to help their friend battling with addiction with a forced intervention in the woods, but they soon discover they’re not alone.

Here is the trailer:

As Certain as Death reminds us why it’s never a good idea to hash things out in the middle of nowhere, but is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Rock & Royal Productions

Loved the premise.

We’ve already seen a group of friends take someone into the woods who is struggling with addiction in Evil Dead (2013). That film was a lot more effective, but with the lower budget for As Certain as Death, I was all in for them taking this idea and putting a slasher spin on it.

Crazy ending.

I didn’t think we’d ever get there, but there is an ending filled with slasher goodness. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best part of the movie by far…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Rock & Royal Productions

Took too long to get to the punch…

The movie was only an hour and twenty minutes, but it really dragged. I didn’t mind some of the intervention stuff, but after a while, I was just tired of hearing everyone talking. If they had gotten to the camp site quicker, things would have been better.

The ending delivered somewhat, but I still wanted a lot more from it. I think it might have benefited from some more gore and some extended chase scenes.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Rock & Royal Productions

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

The film was watchable and had some things going for it, but I was just frustrated because it had such an amazing premise around it and I wanted it to fully embrace it. It took too long for things to happen and by the time they did, I had already lost interest.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on As Certain as Death in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Insidious: The Red Door” in Theaters: The Final Chapter for the Lambert Family

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“We’re ready to forget once and for all…”

Insidious: The Red Door released in theaters on July 7th 2023. The fifth film of the supernatural horror franchise stars Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Sinclair Daniel, and Rose Byrne. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-seven minutes.

After Josh Lambert drops his son off at college, both of them begin having nightmares and hallucinations as something horrifying from their past comes back to haunt them.

Here is the trailer:

Insidious: The Red Door is the final film in the franchise and Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut as he attempts to give us a satisfying conclusion. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures

The friendship between Dalton and Chris.

Even though we recognize Patrick Wilson as the face of this franchise, this film focuses a lot more on his son, Dalton. Dalton goes off to college and is really moody and artsy. Honestly he was really dull, but I really liked the friendship between him and Chris and I thought that Chris really livened things up in a positive way.

She prevented things from feeling too stale and gave us someone else to root for.

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures

Fun cameos and a few solid scares.

I did jump a few times and thought some of the scares were actually well done. I can’t say the same for all of the scares, but there were a few moments of dread in this that are worth noting.

I appreciated the cameos (especially since this is the final chapter), which made this film feel a little more familiar.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures

Don’t bench your best players…

I get that he was directing this film, but I wanted more of Patrick Wilson. We’ve seen this type of move before with the Halloween franchise when we shifted over to Corey and Allyson. I didn’t mind a lot of the college scenes…although the frat stuff seemed overdone. I guess I was just looking for more screen time for certain characters since this was the final chapter.

I also wanted more of an explanation about what was going on in “The Further,” but this film focused more on the family instead. Even though I liked some of the scares, many of them just felt really watered down and predictable.

The pacing also felt super slow, which made this film feel longer than it actually was.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures

I’m in about 75 percent…

Insidious: The Red Door does enough to close off the franchise, but I wanted it to do something new and unique here.

The movie was OK for the most part, but it needed a lot more than watered down jump scares to fully capture my attention.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Insidious: The Red Door in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Sheroes” on Demand: Mindless Fun in the Sun

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“We need to handle this…”

Sheroes released on Demand on July 7th 2023. The action-comedy film stars Sasha Luss, Wallis Day, Skai Jackson, and Isabelle Fuhrman. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty minutes.

Four friends take a trip to Thailand, but when one of their bags gets mixed up, they find themselves in a world of trouble.

Here is the trailer:

Sheroes is a mix of Spring Breakers and Charlie’s Angels with girl power to the extreme, but does it do enough to be worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Paramount

Pretty to look at…

From the cast, to the setting, to the aesthetically pleasing cinematography…everything is just bright and lovely to watch. I loved some of the fashion choices and that car was to die for…

Images courtesy of Paramount

The girls give it their all…

While some of the acting was severely lacking, I thought that our main stars put forth a valiant effort here and did the best with what they were given. They embraced the brainless, silly fun and just went with it.

If you don’t try to make sense of any of this, it is actually kind of entertaining once you get past the opening. Some of the action and fight sequences were enjoyable and I started to like the characters more as the movie continued.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Paramount

Rocky start…

This movie was really tough to watch for the first thirty minutes. It was basically just a mash-up of tropes, clichés, and utter nonsense. Luckily things improved when we got to the action parts, but the set-up was so ridiculous and unbelievable.

I’m not sure if this film was trying to be a parody, but a lot of the humor didn’t land for me and whenever the girls started to quote or reference good action movies, it just made this film seem shallow in comparison.

I’m all for girl power and I’ll even go with the ridiculous notion that one knows how to handle a kidnapping situation when their dad makes action films, but a lot of this was pretty painful to sit through.

Just try not to think about it and it does get kind of entertaining as it continues, however…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Paramount

I’m in about 75 percent…

This film was far from perfect and really ridiculous at times, but it did have some fun moments. As long as you don’t try to follow any kind of logic, you’ll have a decent time watching it.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Sheroes in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Horror of Dolores Roach” on Prime Video: A Tasty and Twisted Treat!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I’m just like you if everything went wrong…”

The Horror of Dolores Roach released on Prime Video on July 7th 2023 with all eight episodes available to stream now. The horror dramedy series stars Justina Machado, Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, Jessica Pimentel, and Cyndi Lauper. Each episode runs for approximately 26-30 minutes.

After getting out of prison, Dolores discovers that the home she knew and loved has changed drastically. She tries to turn her life around by becoming a masseuse, but things go horribly wrong when she resorts to extreme measures to keep her new life going.

Here is the trailer:

The Horror of Dolores Roach is loosely inspired by Sweeney Todd, bringing us plenty of shocking and disturbing moments and featuring an out of this world performance by Justina Machado. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Justina Machado is bloody fantastic!!!

I absolutely LOVED her in this and think it was her best performance to date. She was funny, extreme, relatable, and so incredible to watch in each episode. I normally don’t like voice-over narrations, but hers were actually spot on and perfect in this. She is flawless and I am a fan for life now!

I enjoyed the other characters as well and I really thought there was a strong dynamic between her and Luis.

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Bite-sized binge-worthy episodes.

I watched this series in one day. The shorter episodes worked and the pacing was spot on. This show was so addicting! I haven’t been this excited about a series in a long time. If you enjoy shows like Santa Clarita Diet, Shining Vale, and Based on a True Story, you’ll fall in love with this series.

I appreciated that it was not afraid to take us down a darker route. The balance of comedy/dramedy and horror worked seamlessly here. The series never took itself too seriously and that’s why it was so entertaining. It could have been a lot heavier (especially with some of the content), but I don’t think that would have translated as well.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

I want more!

As soon as I finished this series, I wanted more. We were left with an insane cliffhanger and I truly hope that this series gets picked up for another season because I adored it.

As a note of warning, there were some stomach-turning moments sprinkled in here so be aware of that if that’s not your jam.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 100 percent!!!

The Horror of Dolores Roach is fresh, addicting, and muy loco!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Susie Searches” on Demand: A Dark Comedy I Didn’t Know I Needed!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I want to solve the unsolvable…”

Susie Searches released on demand on June 29th 2023. The dark comedy thriller stars Kiersey Clemons, Alex Wolff, Rachel Sennott, Isaac Cole Powell, and Ken Marino. It runs for an hour and forty-five minutes.

Susie has always loved mysteries and true crime, but when her own podcast fails to bring in listeners, she seizes the opportunity to take on a case involving a missing student on campus, but things quickly spiral out of control when she gains more popularity than she was ready for.

Here is the trailer:

Susie Searches is a fantastic mix of Veronica Mars and Ingrid Goes West, delivering with an addicting mystery and plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Vertical Entertainment

Not afraid to take some risks…

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this film, but I was pleasantly surprised when it took some dark twists as the movie progressed. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about this, but I love that it went for something new and unique rather than recycling the same material we have seen again and again with female sleuths.

This movie was fresh and thoroughly entertaining because of this and I thought the performances were really good. Kiersey Clemons commanded the screen and it’s always great to see Rachel Sennott and Ken Marino in pretty much anything. They added to the dark comedy aspects, helping this film feel a little lighter.

Not predictable.

I was fully captivated by this movie and I can honestly say that I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. This film descended into darkness on several occasions and really took a magnifying glass to the dangers of wanting internet popularity without hitting us over the head with it.

I thought the pacing was spot on and that ending was really fantastic!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Vertical Entertainment

Has an identity crisis at times…

This film really couldn’t make up its mind about what it wanted to be. I personally didn’t mind the switch in genres and actually thought it made the movie better, but it was a little erratic at times. In a way, I actually think that this mirrored the indecision going on within Susie so I can’t really fault it that much, but be prepared to have things change up on you without any warning.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

Susie Searches is offbeat, quirky, and absolutely engrossing!

I think we have a potential cult classic here. This was such a refreshing watch!
