Spoiler-Free Review of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” on Peacock: Welcome Back to Horror, Matthew Lillard!

Five Nights at Freddy’s released in theaters and on Peacock on October 27th 2023. Based on the popular video game, the horror film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard. The film runs for an hour and forty-nine minutes.

A security guard with a troubled past takes a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, quickly learning that the performing animatronics may have a few dangerous tricks up their sleeves.

Five Nights at Freddy’s has some fun moments for fans of the video game, but it ultimately takes itself too seriously instead of indulging in some needed camp. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

All hail, Matthew Lillard!

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Matthew Lillard and that Stu Macher from Scream is one of my all-time favorite horror characters. I was thrilled to see him in this one and he was the main reason why I tuned in. He delivered his role perfectly. I hope he appears in some more horror films soon because he’s always a blast to watch.

Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games did a solid job as well with what he was given and I truly believed the bond between his character and his little sister, which helped me invest in this film a little bit more.

Impressive design on the animatronics.

I was worried that they would seem outrageous and really silly, but I was personally impressed by the animatronics coming to life on screen.

I also thought that this film was a nice step up from kids horror. Pre-teens will probably love certain parts of this film and I think that it’s a fun introduction to the horror genre. I’d recommend kids under twelve watching it with supervision, however.

The Cons:

Too much set-up…

I could have personally done without the repetitive flashbacks and dragged out set-up in the beginning. This film wasn’t scary at all and it tried to be like too many other films. It would have benefited from some campy, ridiculous fun, which would have been pure B movie magic gold, but this route was very forgettable.

Willy’s Wonderland did a much better job of this…

The pacing was also really sluggish at times and the dialogue was uninspiring. I’d say that wouldn’t really matter if we had some inventive kills in the mix or some dry humor, but everything was really watered down.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Five Nights at Freddy’s takes a safe and mostly bland route instead of just having fun with this material. There were some entertaining moments sprinkled into the mix, but I’m not sure that I would watch this again.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Royal Hotel” on Demand: A Vacation Gone Wrong

“You’re here on vacation?”

The Royal Hotel released in limited theaters on October 6th 2023 and is currently available to stream on demand as of October 23rd 2023. The thriller-drama film stars Julia Garner, Jessica Henwick, Hugo Weaving, Toby Wallace, James Frecheville, and Daniel Henshall. It runs for approximately 90 minutes.

Hanna and Liv are having the time of their lives vacationing in Australia, but when they wind up short on cash, they agree to take a temporary job bartending in a remote Outback mining town that puts them in danger.

The Royal Hotel features two gripping performances in a chilling setting, but does all the buildup lead to anything worthwhile? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Two worthy leads.

The best part of this film was the two strong performances by Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick. They were both very believable and portrayed some heavy stuff in tense situations. I wish they were given a little bit more content to work with here, but I enjoyed their performances and they elevated this film in a lot of ways.

A setting and premise with loads of potential.

When I first saw the trailer for this film, I was so beyond excited to watch it. It screamed vibes of Wolf Creek and Brokedown Palace. We had a really good set-up and some intense moments built in, but the end result wasn’t what I was expecting…

The Cons:

Not sure why this was billed as a thriller?

Sure, there were some intense moments here and there, but I was super frustrated with this film because it felt like we were building up to an insane climax and then the end result was lukewarm at best. It just never really went anywhere…

This really should have been billed as a drama instead. I think that it will disappoint an audience looking for an actual thriller. The drama wasn’t bad, but setting up that expectation made this a confusing watch for me.

Lacked necessary character layers.

I didn’t need that many, but some would have been nice, especially since our two leads are incredibly talented and basically carried this movie. I needed to know more about why they were in Australia in the first place and maybe some crucial moments between them in their past could have explained some of the tension building throughout the film.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

I think that people will either love or hate this film. I’m somewhere in the middle of that. It wasn’t bad by any means and I actually thoroughly enjoyed the performances by our two main leads, but I wanted SO MUCH MORE!

Julia Garner needed to unleash her inner Ruth Langmore from Ozark to give this movie some serious edge.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Night of the Hunted” on Shudder: Adrenaline-Fuelled Thriller Delivers

Night of the Hunted released on Shudder on October 20th 2023. The survival-thriller film stars Camille Rowe, J. John Bieler, and Jeremy Scippio. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-five minutes.

When Alice stops at a remote gas station late at night, she’s targeted by an unknown sniper. Her only hope is to flag someone down to help her or try and survive on her own by using her surroundings to her advantage.

Night of the Hunted is my kind of thriller with an exceptional female lead and a simple, but intense formula that will hold your attention until the very end. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Starts off with a bang…literally!

With minimal set-up, we are launched into an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that doesn’t hold back. It’s a simple, but effective approach, reminding me immediately of films like P2 (from the same director), Alone (2020), and Hunt Her, Kill Her. These are my favorite kinds of survival thrillers. I loved how bloody and brutal this one was. It had my heart racing and I thought that ending was so well done!

A strong and resourceful female lead.

Camille Rowe was bloody fantastic as Alice. I thought she was clever and bad-ass. I liked that her character was flawed in a lot of ways. It gave the film more substance and it also made her more relatable. She wasn’t perfect by any means, but you still wanted to root for her against all odds.

The Cons:

Loses a touch of steam in the middle.

This wasn’t a major con because I thought the dialogue needed to happen in order for the film to progress, but it didn’t compare to the beginning and end of this film, which were so beyond intense. I actually really liked the dynamic going on and thought the conversations helped enhance the movie in a lot of ways, but I have a feeling that there will be some mixed thoughts on this.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Founders Day”: A Fun Political Slasher

“Things are really heating up in the race for Mayor…”

Founders Day released back in August 2023 at London Fright Fest and will be playing at Toronto After Dark on October 20th 2023. The slasher horror film stars Naomi Grace, Devin Druid, Amy Hargreaves, Catherine Curtin, and William Russ. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

A small town is plagued by a series of brutal killings leading up to a cutthroat mayoral election.

Founders Day has a fun premise and a few twists worth sticking around for. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Fun idea for a slasher film.

We have plenty of horror entries for Halloween and Christmas, but not too many November/Fall ones. With the film, Thanksgiving coming out soon and now with Founders Day, we have some some solid slasher entries for the season to indulge in, which is a very good thing!

This film is brought to us by the same creator of She Came from the Woods and I thought it had a similar vibe to that film. It had some dry humor mixed in, which worked well for the most part, and some stand-out characters. Some of the small town discussions even reminded me of Jaws in a playful way, which worked to the film’s advantage.

Catherine Curtin stole the movie for me and was as fantastic as ever and I thought our lead did a decent job as well.

Inventive kills!

I actually really enjoyed some of the kills in this one and thought they were well done. I would have liked a touch more gore and some extended chase scenes, but I’m all for some slasher fun just in time for Fall.

The Cons:

The fluff in-between slowed down the pacing.

Overall, I thought the runtime for this film was fine, but I could have done without some of the unnecessary conversations between certain characters. They felt a little filler. The killings were a lot of fun and I didn’t think this film needed to be weighed down by anything else. It found its groove again by the time it reached the climax, however.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

If you’re looking for a fun B-movie slasher film with an inventive premise and some killer twists, there’s plenty to enjoy with this one.

I think horror fans will appreciate this one for sure.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Dark Harvest” on Demand: A Solid Halloween-Themed Entry to Horror

“It’s Halloween…you know what that means…”

Dark Harvest (based on the novel of the same name) is a supernatural horror film that released on October 13th 2023 on demand. It stars Casey Likes, Emyri Crutchfield, Elizabeth Reaser, and Jeremy Davies. The films runs for an hour and thirty-three minutes.

Teens participate in a yearly “run” to hunt down a supernatural creature that emerges from the cornfields on Halloween night.

Dark Harvest is a gory mix of The Purge and The Hunger Games with a nightmare inspiring villain. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Fun for Halloween.

I’ve been loving all of the new entries for Halloween this year and Dark Harvest is another decent entry for sure. Sawtooth Jack is a terrifying villain, but the real horror lies within this small town filled with dark secrets and betrayals.

While this film is far from perfect, I absolutely loved the Halloween feel!

Impressive cinematography.

I was honestly really blown away by this. This film was shot very well and I loved that it took place in the 1960’s. It really had a unique feel to it. I’ve seen plenty of modern day horror entries so this was a nice change of pace.

The Cons

Confusing at times and goes off the rails…

I think I needed to read the book first to really understand what was going on. The audience is thrown into things and I found myself trying to piece together the premise on my own. The characters needed a lot more development so that we would care about what happened to them.

I did think that Emyri Crutchfield was the strongest performer by far as Kelly. A lot of the other characters just kind of faded into non-existence and our main protagonist was slightly frustrating.

The first half of this film was actually really decent and I was impressed by the extreme gore displayed, but some of the twists had me scratching my head and were a little too bonkers for me personally. That may just come down to preference though…

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

Fun Halloween horror with some moments of brilliance, but there were a lot of messy and confusing aspects to deal with as well.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Conference” (2023) on Netflix: Corporate Team Building Just Got A Lot More Entertaining!

“Teamwork makes the dream work!”

The Conference (Konferensen) is a Swedish slasher horror film that released on October 13th 2023 on Netflix. It stars Katia Winter, Adam Lundgren, Lola Zackow, Maria Sid, and Bahar Pars. The films runs for an hour and thirty-nine minutes.

Things go horribly wrong at a corporate retreat when a masked killer begins to pick them off one by one, forcing them to put their team building skills to the test.

The Conference is a bloody good time that is extremely relatable and clever. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A killer premise that actually delivers.

Anyone who has ever had to participate in some kind of team building retreat or workshop at work can easily relate to the premise. It’s on a new level of torture. All you want to do is go to work and do your job (or at least get through your day). The last thing you want to do is spend unnecessary time working on teamwork with silly activities.

Well, how about a masked killer to spice things up?

I was blown away by this premise and so happy with the actual execution. Slashers are making a serious comeback and this is a worthy entry for sure! More please!

Sticks the landing!

This film kept building and building and when it reached its peak I was really worried about it messing up the ending, but it delivered and then some! I was thoroughly satisfied with the conclusion and hope to see more from this director soon.

The Cons:

Takes a little while to kick into high gear…

But once it finds its groove, it’s slasher gold! I almost didn’t mind that it took a little while to get going because it mirrored the endless feel of these types of workshops. If you’re thinking of tuning out, just stick around. I promise it will be worth it!

The Conference is a smart slasher that depicts the real “hell” behind professional development retreats with fantastic gore and plenty of entertaining moments!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Goosebumps” (2023) on Disney+ and Hulu: Justin Long Does His Best…

“Have you seen anything strange happening there?”

Goosebumps premiered on Disney+ and Hulu on October 13th 2023 with the first five episodes available now. The remaining five episodes will air weekly. Based on the popular book series, the series stars Justin Long, Rachael Harris, Zack Morris, Isa Briones, and Miles McKenna. Each episode is approximately 38-45 minutes.

A group of high school students stumble across a mystery involving the death of Harold Biddle, which may connect directly to a secret involving several parents in town.

Goosebumps (2023) leaves the comedy of the films behind and attempts to deliver more teen drama instead, but does this get in the way of R.L. Stine’s classic stories? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Justin Long is the best part of the series…

He’s what got me to tune in and he delivered with his role so far. I think that he always elevates whatever he’s in and he’s definitely one of our kings of horror so I was happy to see him in this.

There are plenty of other familiar faces as well and some newcomers with potential.

Does draw inspiration from some of the original books.

After a 1990’s television series and the films starring Jack Black (2015, 2018), I didn’t know what to really expect with this show, but I was excited to see a few familiar titles surface within the episodes, giving fans of the book series something to be excited about. The actual depictions of those stories were done in a solid way, but unfortunately some unnecessary fluff took over the majority of the episodes.

The Cons:

Too focused on trying to be relevant for its teen audience.

This was really disappointing because I actually liked the horror/story aspect of this series. I didn’t need it to be an anthology because it is different from the 1990’s series, but there is too much unnecessary teen drama. It took up way too much time, making this a bland and exhausting watch.

The acting really wasn’t great (except for a few stand-out performances) and the characters were based off of tropes, leaving little room for actual layers and development.

I also think that this series is very unsure of who its audience is supposed to be. Is it trying to bring in a new audience or is it attempting to reel in fans of the original book series? Either way, it’s failing on both accounts and its uncertainty is overpowering the glimmers of potential.

This series isn’t bad, but it will very easily get lost in the shuffle, which is frustrating.

I think that the new Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot did a much better job with this type of material…

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Goosebumps (2023) focuses too much on the wrong things instead of allowing the stories to speak for themselves, but if it changes its direction a little bit, there may be some creepy potential here.

I’m hopeful we’ll get there!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Shining Vale” Season 2 on Starz: Courteney Cox is in Control!

“I am no longer a danger to society…”

Shining Vale season two premiered on Starz on October 13th 2023 with the first episode. There will be eight episodes in total that will air weekly. The horror comedy series stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, Gus Birney and Judith Light. Each episode runs for approximately 30-34 minutes.

After being checked into a mental hospital by her family, Pat attempts to change her outlook on life and banish her demons for good…but are they really gone?

Shining Vale season one flew under the radar, but it was quirky, creepy, and absolutely delightful. Is season two worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Courteney Cox is back and better than ever!

She was absolutely brilliant in season one and had me laughing out loud quite a few times. Pat may have toned down her cursing with her new “rehabilitation,” but Courteney is still commanding the screen in the best way possible.

It took me a little while to warm up to the rest of the cast in season one, but already I am liking the new character dynamics and the ending of episode one left us with a lot of ghostly potential already. More please!

The fun is only just beginning…

I was slightly worried about the direction for season two, but I think the season two premiere did enough to present us with some familiar plots while leaving the door open for more. I’m hopeful that we can explore more behind the actual hauntings this season and maybe even meet a few new creepy characters to keep us invested. Either way, I’m intrigued and I’m happy that the shorter episodes are here to stay because they work very nicely with the overall pacing of this show.

The Cons:

I needed a refresher course…

I definitely recommend watching the recap in the beginning. I probably should have binge-watched the first season again because I felt a little lost at first. Now that we’ve gotten through the initial set-up for season two, I’m hoping that we kick things into high gear because season one took a little while to hit its peak. I’m confident we’ll get there though.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix: An Enthralling and Eloquent Masterpiece

“Nobody gets away with anything…not really…”

The Fall of the House of Usher is a limited series from The Haunting of Hill House creator, Mike Flanagan that released on October 12th 2023. The supernatural horror series features eight episodes available to stream now on Netflix. It stars Bruce Greenwood, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Willa Fitzgerald, Mark Hamill, Zach Gilford, and Carl Lumbly. Each episode runs for approximately 60-65 minutes.

Siblings, Roderick and Madeline Usher, have built an empire of wealth with their prosperous, but potentially harmful company, but when their heirs all begin dying one by one, dark secrets are unlocked.

The Fall of the House of Usher has plenty of familiar faces from The Haunting of Hill House world, but this show has a slightly different feel, shining a light on some of the most disturbing aspects of humanity. Is this series worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A clever mix of gothic horror and whodunnit mystery.

The gothic horror elements were absolutely present in this particular series, channeling the works of Edgar Allan Poe in a modern way. The whodunnit mystery style added some charm in as well, hooking the audience completely as we watched this unfold.

By the time I got to the end of episode two, I could not stop watching this series. The episodes were on the longer side, but it never felt that way. Each one was filled with beautiful cinematography, moving performances, and welcomed nods to a classic short story that transported me back to the page. I loved that this series embraced its inspiration while still creating something chilling, thought-provoking, and shocking of its own in the process.

Exceptional performances.

Fans of The Haunting of Hill House anthology will be pleased to see several familiar faces in this entry. We also welcomed in several new actors, who did an incredible job. Overall, I was really impressed by the performances, as these characters didn’t necessarily have the heart and soul of previous ones, but they were still layered and intriguing all the same.

Stand-out performances go to the amazing Carla Gugino and Willa Fitzgerald, who dominated the screen and then some. Wow!

The Cons:

Jam-packs in a lot…

I really don’t have too many cons for this series. Episode one was really over-stuffed with set-up and I was slightly overwhelmed by the time jumps, but I think the series found its way with this with the remaining episodes.

This series had a different feel from the others, highlighting characters obsessed with drugs, sex, and power, but it still resonated with me by the time I got to the end, proving to be another worthy Mike Flanagan series.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 1000 percent!

Sheer perfection with a deliciously dark plot worth devouring.

The best show I’ve watched all year!

If you enjoyed Mike Flanagan’s previous series, you’ll find plenty to love in this new entry that isn’t afraid to take some risks along the way that certainly pay off.

The Pros:

Not what I was expecting…but consuming all the same.

When a film is billed as an erotic thriller, I expect some juicy scenes and some silly nonsense in-between that make for a good guilty pleasure watch. This film was not that. Sure, there were sex scenes, but most of them felt very uncomfortable to watch.

That being said, this film took an intriguing look into the pressures of trying to make it in business. Greed, power, and the obsession with success can damage everything and everyone else around us and I thought this was a compelling watch for the most part.

Chilling performances.

Both of our leads did an extraordinary job with what they were given. I thought that they both managed to capture my full attention in different ways and they elevated a lot of scenes with their delivery.

The supporting characters felt mostly filler to me, but I think that was sort of the point.

The Cons:

A depressing play for power.

I much preferred the seductive play for control in the recent film, Sanctuary. Fair Play lacked that finesse and depicted a battle to be on top that was filled with desperation. You really have to be in the right mood to watch this film because it will leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth.

I also think this film went on for a little too long. It really only needed an hour and thirty minutes tops…

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

A brutal, dark, and uncomfortable watch.

This film wasn’t what I thought it would be, but it did keep me invested until the end.
