Spoiler-Free Review of “Get Away” on Shudder: A Bloody & Bizarre Horror Comedy

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You’ll be stranded…”

Get Away released on Shudder on January 10th 2025. The horror comedy film stars Nick Frost, Aisling Bea, Maisie Ayres, and Sebastian Croft. It runs for approximately an hour and twenty-five minutes.

A remote vacation in Sweden takes a twisted turn when a family discovers that there may be a serial killer on the island threatening them all.

Here is the trailer:

Get Away starts out like your standard vacation gone wrong film, but it takes a risky and unexpected turn with its bloody final act. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Creepy and unsettling vibe.

I love vacation gone wrong films and this one definitely had an extra creepy tone. I’m not sure who would want to go on a vacation in a place like this, but there were plenty of unsettling moments sprinkled throughout the film, making me question booking an Airbnb ever again.

Insane final act!

I mean…really insane! It was batshit crazy in the best way possible. I kind of saw the twist coming, but it was still a lot of fun, making this a much more entertaining watch overall. If you’re thinking of tuning out, I highly recommend sticking around until the end.

The Cons:

Sluggish pacing at times.

The overall runtime was on the shorter side, but the middle of the film felt a little slower for me personally. I felt like we were waiting around for something extreme to happen. Don’t worry…we get there, but you have to sit through some slow fluff before that.

So am I in or out?

Nick Frost is a lot of fun in this unexpected horror comedy gem.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Humane” on Demand: Enrico Colantoni is Bloody Entertaining

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Humanity is the opposing side…”

Humane released on demand on April 26th 2024. The horror thriller film stars Jay Baruchel, Sebastian Chacon, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, and Enrico Colantoni. It runs for approximately 93 minutes.

After the collapse of the global environment, the government resorts to extreme measures to reduce the world’s population.

Here is the trailer:

Humane has a thought-provoking and outrageous premise, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Interesting concept.

I’ve seen a lot of “end of the world” or post-apocalyptic depictions lately in film, but I really think this one stood out as a unique gem. The idea behind it all was very intriguing and it got me thinking about a lot. I had tons of questions, which made this an engaging watch overall. I think this film will definitely create some interesting discussions and I loved the use of gore. I hope to see more from this director soon.

Enrico Colantoni is the best part of the film!

I’m a huge fan of his from the Veronica Mars days and I really loved his dark humor and quirkiness in this one. He elevated this film in so many ways and as soon as it started dragging, I was thrown right into things again because of his reactions. I absolutely loved him in this!

The Cons:

I wasn’t fully invested in the rest of the characters…

For some reason, I just couldn’t connect to any of them so I didn’t care about what happened to them. I think we needed some more character development to actually root for anyone or see them interact more as a family. I didn’t need this movie to be that much longer, but there was some opportunity here for sure.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

Humane is fresh, bloody, and entertaining enough for your next watch.

It didn’t exactly stick the landing, but it did something different, which I appreciated.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Humane in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “What Comes Around” on Demand: An Intriguing Watch!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You don’t really know this guy…”

An internet love affair spirals out of control when Eric decides to show up at Anna’s house to surprise her for her birthday, leading to an unpredictable game of cat-and-mouse.

Here is the trailer:

What Comes Around is an unconventional romantic thriller that kept me guessing until the end. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A juicy twist!

Wow…I did not see that coming! At first glance, this film seemed like a modern day version of Fear (starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon), but it took an unexpected turn and went in a completely different direction.

It was shocking and really interesting.

Kyle Gallner does it again!

I just recently watched him in The Passenger (a fantastic performance) and here he goes again with this film! He always immerses himself into whatever role he is playing and I think he elevated this film in a lot of ways.

I’m not sure if I would have liked it as much without him. He really draws you in and makes you think with his performances. There were a lot of moving parts to this particular movie and I think he poured a lot into his character to keep the audience invested until the end.

The Cons:

Needed a little more edge…

There were so many little moments in this film that felt like they were building up to something else. While I didn’t need it to go full Lifetime here, I thought we were going to get some deranged moments, but they never really came.

That being said, I appreciate that this film decided to stay true to its intention, focusing more on the consequences of past actions while using a realistic approach to show the impact of the ending.

I guess I was just expecting something a little more explosive, but it still worked.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

A unique and realistic thriller that makes you contemplate the impact one’s past actions can really have on others.

This film was not what I was expecting, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Werewolves Within” on Demand: A Supernatural Murder Mystery

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Yeah this town is batshit…”

Werewolves Within originally released on June 25th 2021. The film is currently available to rent on demand. It stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Harvey Guillen, Cheyenne Jackson, Catherine Curtin and Michaela Watkins. It is approximately 90 minutes long.

When a new ranger arrives in a small town, he quickly finds himself thrown into a murder mystery when several residents are trapped together in the local inn after a snowstorm. Everyone is a suspect as they start to realize that they may actually be dealing with a ruthless werewolf.

Here is the trailer:

Werewolves Within has the potential to provide us with horror comedy gold, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of IFC Films

The who-dun-it style works.

It seems like a lot of recent films are following the murder mystery approach, but it works in this film. This film gave off vibes of Clue and Knives Out with its own voice as well. The characters are a lot of fun as well and Sam Richardson has great chemistry with Milana Vayntrub which made this an entertaining watch.

Fun horror comedy.

I love horror comedies and I don’t think they are talked about enough, but this film could easily fit right in with Tucker and Dale vs Evil. While I wouldn’t say that all the humor landed, a lot of it just worked effortlessly.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of IFC Films

Pacing issues.

The majority of the film focuses on the set-up of everything. We spend so much time getting to know the players and watching them interact, but it almost took away from the best part of the movie when everything hits the fan. The ending was great but it took a little too long to get there.

I could have done without the political/social commentary.

While some moments were genuinely hilarious and a lot of fun, others felt really forced. The references were overdone at one point. Sometimes less is more and I think that Werewolves Within was decent, but it could have been better if it had just embraced the simple plot without overthinking things.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

I love horror comedies and I think that this film was entertaining overall and worth a watch. Sam Richardson is truly fantastic and there are some laugh out loud moments. The second half of the film is a lot stronger than the first and there are some rough edges, but there is enough going on in this film to enjoy.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Werewolves Within in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
