Spoiler-Free Review of “Fear Street: Prom Queen” on Netflix: A New Shadyside Slasher with a Killer Soundtrack

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I guess they were right…”

Fear Street: Prom Queen is a horror slasher film that premiered on May 23rd 2025 on Netflix. The film stars India Fowler, Fina Strazza, Ella Rubin, Suzanna Son, and David Iacono. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty minutes.

Inspired by the R.L. Stine books, this new film takes place on prom night in 1988, where a masked killer begins to target the candidates for prom queen one by one.

Here is the trailer:

Fear Street: Prom Queen seamlessly escorts us back in time, but does this slasher measure up to the other Fear Street films? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Loved the 80’s vibe!

A lot of films were recently using the 80’s era a little too much, but I have to say that I really liked it in this particular film. The overall vibe, fashion, and music were on point! I was seriously jamming out the entire time while watching it. I need this soundtrack on repeat!

Gory kills.

I’ve seen too many slashers lately that haven’t really embraced the gory kills so I was pleased that this one didn’t hold back in this department. Sure, a lot of them were over the top, but they were bloody, outrageous, and really entertaining.

The Cons:

Underdeveloped characters.

Probably my biggest issue with this film was the lack of layers for the characters. Sure, it’s a slasher, but I also want to somewhat care about some of these characters so that I invest more in what happens to them. Everything just felt very by the numbers here and I really didn’t care for any of the characters, which was disappointing.

The original film street trilogy did a good job in this department so I’m not sure why there was so much of a disconnect here.

The reveal was also underwhelming for me…

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

Fear Street: Prom Queen channels 80’s slashers with a fantastic soundtrack and some stand-out kills, but there was definitely something missing here.

This film didn’t measure up to the Film Street trilogy for me, but I’m always a fan of unserious slashers.

Spoiler-Free Review of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” on Prime Video: YA Friendly “Jennifer’s Body” has some Potential

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“We’ll always be friends…”

My Best Friend’s Exorcism released on Prime Video on September 30th 2022. Based on the novel of the same name, the teen horror comedy stars Elsie Fisher, Amiah Miller, Chris Lowell, and Rachel Ogechi Kanu.

Set in the 1980’s, the friendship between Abby and Gretchen is tested when one of them gets possessed by a demon.

Here is the trailer:

My Best Friend’s Exorcism has a cute premise with a killer soundtrack, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Fun idea with a great soundtrack!

This film was pretty much a mashup of Jennifer’s Body and Saved! If you enjoy those films, you’ll find some decent content here, but the scares are really watered down. I am a big fan of the author, Grady Hendrix, and I had high hopes for this one. It did have plenty of entertaining moments to enjoy even though the plot went off course as the film continued…

Believable performances and a friendship to root for.

The friendship between Abby and Gretchen kept me around until the end. I thought both actresses did a really great job and Chris Lowell was a scene-stealer! Some of the issues seemed heavily based in tropes and you’ll get your typical high school drama in this one, but the friendship made it feel more authentic at times.

The Cons:

Watered down scares…

I wouldn’t have minded the watered down scares so much since this was more of a YA film, but there were a few scenes that had the potential to be really incredible if they had gone a little bit darker with them. Don’t expect to see too much horror in this one, although there are some glimmers here and there.

The plot also went off the rails, which was disappointing, especially since it started off really strong and with a lot of potential. I think it still found its way in the end, but I’m not sure it really honored the novel as well as I wanted it to.

So am I in or out?

A fun idea with a believable friendship, but it needed a little more edge at times. Overall, this was a decent watch, but I just wanted a lot more.

The Pros:

Visually stunning with an amazing soundtrack!

This film really transported me back in time and the musical soundtrack complimented it so well. I also loved the camera effects and the use of lighting. There were so many shocking and horrifying moments during this film and everything was elevated that much more by the visual and sound effects.

This film took my breath away in the best way possible!

Creepy AF!

This movie was so creepy and disturbing. There was plenty of gore, but the horror went well beyond that. My skin was crawling during certain scenes and I was genuinely freaked out by what I was watching. This film did a great job of embracing the slasher genre while pushing the envelope that much more with its uncensored content.

So much fun!

There’s already such a close and wonderful relationship between sex and horror films and X took it one step further. I loved the film within a film and the actors did a fantastic job with every aspect of their portrayal. Don’t think about things too much. Just enjoy the film and you’ll love it that much more!

The Cons:

Takes a little while to get going…

I wouldn’t say that this was a major con, but the pacing was a little sluggish in the beginning. Once things took a turn for the disturbing, I was all in but it did take a little while to get there.

So am I in or out?
