Spoiler-Free Review of “Silent Night” (2021) on AMC+: Not what I was expecting…

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Tonight is all about love and forgiveness…”

Silent Night (2021) released on December 3rd 2021 on AMC+ and on demand. The horror comedy film stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Roman Griffin Davis, Lucy Punch, Annabelle Wallis, Lily-Rose Depp and Sope Dirisu. It runs for approximately 90 minutes.

Family and friends gather together for a Christmas dinner filled with drama as we soon discover that they are all facing the end of the world the very next day.

Here is the trailer:

Silent Night (2021) has an exceptional cast and an entertaining formula, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Exceptional cast.

The best part of the movie by far is the cast. Everyone brings something to the table even though there weren’t too many stand-out characters. I still thought that the performances were excellent and the dynamic between the family worked for the most part.

Starts off with a lot of potential.

I actually really enjoyed the beginning of this film. The interactions were humorous and I thought the concept was a good one. I was hoping to get a Ready or Not vibe, but things took a drastic turn…

The Cons:

Slow pacing…

After the strong start, the pacing went downhill. This movie really dragged and I felt like I was watching it for way longer than 90 minutes. I think the movie should have kept the humor going and it did make an effort, but a lot of it didn’t land for me unfortunately.

Morbid and depressing.

This movie is supposed to be a black comedy and I thought it was so dreary and dismal. The timing of this film during the pandemic also was problematic for me and although it was shot prior to it, I couldn’t help making some comparisons, especially with all of the talk about the government and politics…

There is a major twist at the end of the film that will certainly get people talking, but I almost would have preferred a different kind of a twist entirely.

So am I in or out?

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

While I’m sure some people may find this movie brilliant, I was not a fan. I thought it had so much potential and an excellent cast, but it failed to execute something truly worth watching and I think that the trailer was really misleading.
