Spoiler-Free Review of “Natty Knocks” on Demand: Horror Legends Star in this Campy Halloween-themed Flick

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I’ll come for every one of you…”

Natty Knocks is a horror film that released on July 21st 2023 on demand. It stars Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, and Robert Englund. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-five minutes.

A babysitter and a group of kids cross paths with a dangerous serial killer connected to an urban legend in their town on Halloween eve.

Here is the trailer:

Natty Knocks gets us into the spirit of Halloween with a cast made up of horror legends, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Horror dream team!

The cast was out of this world in this one! It was so much fun seeing Danielle Harris, Robert Englund, and Bill Moseley on screen. They each played their character really well and gave the audience something to cheer about.

Killer fun!

As long as you manage your expectations, you’ll have a lot of fun with this B horror movie. I love finding new gems that can fit right into my Halloween lineup and the mashup of supernatural and slasher elements were really entertaining.

The kids did a great job in this one too and that ending was a blast!

This film successfully channeled some campy fun in an effective way. I loved the premise and the second half of the film was thoroughly enjoyable to watch.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Vertical

Takes a while to get going…

The film started off really strong, but then things died down a little bit while we waited for the kids to stumble upon everything. At times, it felt a little filler, but we eventually got back on track and I thought that the film finished strong so this wasn’t a major con.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

If you’re looking for some Halloween fun starring some horror legends, then you are in for a real treat with this one.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Natty Knocks in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Based on a True Story” on Peacock: A Real Treat!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Do we have to wake up to murder every morning?”

Based on a True Story premiered on Peacock on June 8th 2023 with all eight episodes available to stream now. The comedy crime thriller stars Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, and Natalia Dyer. Each episode runs for approximately 25-35 minutes.

Ava and Nathan are expecting a baby and feel like their marriage is becoming very mundane, but when Ava realizes that their plumber may be the Westside Ripper serial killer, she teams up with her husband to blackmail him into creating a true crime podcast with them from the killer’s perspective.

Here is the trailer:

Based On a True Story is the perfect mix of The Flight Attendant and Only Murders in the Building with a unique voice of its own. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Peacock

Great chemistry between characters!

I honestly haven’t seen such good chemistry between a married couple on TV since Santa Clarita Diet. Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina are hilarious on screen, but also very believable as a couple. They are very relatable and the real moments between them give this series an edge.

I was worried that this series would feel like a rip-off of The Flight Attendant and Only Murders in the Building, but it channeled the quirky take on the true crime craze flawlessly while branching off into something truly exceptional of its own.

Stand-out performance goes to Tom Bateman as Matt. Think Joe Goldberg from You without all of the whiny psychobabble. He is charming and entertaining and he absolutely steals the show!

Images courtesy of Peacock

Short episodes make it easy to binge-watch.

I got through this series very quickly. The episodes are super short and it’s so addicting! If you’re looking for a quick and easy binge-watch for the weekend, this is the show for you.

There are also some really fantastic blood-soaked moments for slasher fans. The series is more of a comedic thriller, but I personally liked that it wasn’t afraid to get a little bit messy here. After all, they are dealing with a serial killer…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Peacock

Forced crude dialogue at times…

The opening episode felt a little awkward at times because of the forced and explicit dialogue. I don’t know if the series was trying to be extra shocking, but people in real life don’t talk like this and it just felt unnatural. This calmed down as the episodes continued, however. The show was a lot more entertaining when it wasn’t trying so hard.

I also wasn’t a fan of some of the trippy daydreams/hallucinations. They felt mostly filler to me.

What happened in episode 6 (no spoilers) was completely unnecessary. It almost ruined the entire show for me, but I tried to move past it…

I also wanted more of a pop from the ending. Sure, it left things open for a new season if it gets picked up, but I guess I was looking for something a little more jaw-dropping to seal the deal.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Peacock

I’m in!

Based on a True Story is a lot of fun and very easy to binge-watch. The chemistry between our three main leads is bloody magic and well worth your time.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Swarm” on Prime Video: A Disturbing Watch…

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Who’s your favorite artist?”

Swarm released on Prime Video on March 17th 2023 with seven episodes available to stream now. The psychological-thriller series stars Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey, and Damson Idris. Each episode runs for approximately 30-35 minutes.

An obsessed fan goes on a violent killing spree while trying to get close to her favorite artist.

Here is the trailer:

Swarm is eerie and dark filled with truly disturbing moments. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

A terrifying premise…

Part of the reason why this show was so disturbing was because we kept getting a reminder at the beginning of each episode that this is not a work of fiction. It is based on a series of real events, which makes what we witness on screen that much more horrifying.

There were some genuinely shocking moments that had me on the edge of my seat and by the time I got to the end, I still felt uneasy about what I had just witnessed.

The vignette style worked.

The episodes were on the short side and I actually really liked that we got a vignette approach as Dre traveled to different states across a period of time. I think that it would have been more of an exhausting watch if it didn’t take this approach. It broke things up for me and allowed us to see some fun guest stars as well.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

A boring main character…

I’ve watched plenty of shows centering around a serial killer and while the actions were dark and distressing, the person doing them was often uninspiring to watch. I think I needed some more layers for her even though we got a few and a hint of a possible personality would have helped…

This just made the pacing feel incredibly slow at times until we got to the end of each episode and witnessed another shocking moment.

The order of episodes felt odd as well. By the time you reach episode 6, you’ll get a completely different feel and approach, which was perfectly fine. Episode 6 was actually my favorite one, but then we went back to the main story-line for the final episode and I no longer felt pulled in for the very end. The transition felt disjointed and forced.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Prime Video

I’m in about 75 percent…

Obsession takes a dark turn in this chilling thriller.

I mostly enjoyed my watch, but I wanted more from our main character, which would have elevated this series that much more.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Swarm in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Patient” on Hulu: A Simple, but Effective Thriller Series

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“How can I help you?”

The Patient released on Hulu on August 30th 2022 with its first two episodes. The psychological thriller series will have ten episodes in total that will air weekly. It stars Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson. Each episode runs for approximately 23-25 minutes.

A therapist named Dr. Strauss is dealing with the loss of his wife when he meets an odd new patient who decides to hold him hostage while sorting out his issues with being a serial killer.

Here is the trailer:

The Patient doesn’t waste any time as it starts off in a startling and chilling way, reeling us into the therapy session from hell. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Unique cat-and-mouse premise.

I really like the concept for this one and I’m excited to see where it goes. I appreciated that we didn’t waste too much time on exhausting set-up. Rather, we started off with a bang and then added in the layers as we went along. The formula may seem simple, but it’s working so far and really luring me in.

Shorter episodes.

So far the episodes are just under a half hour, which will make this one very easy to watch each week (similar to OMITB). The content is heavier, but there is still some dry sarcasm to keep things from becoming too overdone. There is a good dynamic between the main characters and already a cliffhanger to ponder over.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Weekly episodes…

This isn’t necessarily a huge con, but sometimes I have a difficult time keeping up with shows that air weekly. I am really intrigued by this one and I think it could have been binge-watch worthy, but I’ll have to wait each week to see how things unfold…

So am I in or out?

Spoiler-Free Review of “Ragdoll” on AMC: Killing Eve Style with Potential

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You’re gonna catch a serial killer…”

Ragdoll originally premiered on AMC+ back in November 2021 but AMC is now airing the six episodes weekly following Killing Eve. The first episode dropped on February 28th 2022. The crime thriller series stars Lucy Hale, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Thalissa Teixeira. Each episode runs for approximately 45-52 minutes.

A game of cat and mouse begins between a troubled cop and a serial killer with a sadistic eye for detail.

Here is the trailer:

Ragdoll has a Killing Eve style that works to its advantage, but is the plot strong enough to keep viewers coming back for more? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of AMC

Good dynamic between characters.

I love Lucy Hale and she is probably the main reason why I tuned into this one. So far her character seems interesting enough and there is also some really great dark humor between the other main characters, which helps lightens the mood a great deal. The crimes we witness are truly horrifying but I’ve seen a lot of series like this before so I think it’s smart that there are decent character layers and fun banter to keep viewers intrigued.

Stylish visual effects.

The series is brought to us from the same production company that made Killing Eve and that should come as no surprise. I immediately got that type of vibe when I started watching and the network was smart to air these episodes right after Killing Eve to bring in a new audience.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of AMC

I’ve seen this plot before…

The pacing and plot need some work so far. I think there is enough potential to keep me coming back for more, but there was also a lot of set-up, which slowed down the overall pace for me. I’m confident that things will pick up steam over the six episodes but I don’t want this to fall into the generic crime thriller category because it has a great cast and a dark quality that I really like.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of AMC

I’m in about 75 percent…

Lucy Hale is always worth a watch and I think that there is a lot of potential here, but I’m hoping that the plot picks up steam soon so that I don’t lose interest.

Either way, I’d recommend checking it out after Killing Eve if you enjoy crime thrillers.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Dexter: New Blood” on Showtime: The Dark Passenger Returns

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Tonight’s the night…”

Dexter: New Blood premiered on November 7th 2021. After the series finale in 2013, the show is back with ten new episodes that will air weekly. The show stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Julia Jones and Jack Alcott. Each episode runs for approximately 52-55 minutes.

Ten years have passed since Dexter Morgan left his home in Miami, as he starts over as Jim Lindsay in upstate New York.

Here is the trailer:

Dexter: New Blood gives fans another chance to connect with their favorite serial killer as a different kind of monster emerges in a new setting. Does Dexter: New Blood do enough to make up for its disappointing series finale? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Showtime

Michael C. Hall is as brilliant as ever.

Even though it’s been quite a long time since we have last seen Dexter Morgan on the small screen, Michael C. Hall makes us feel right at home. His portrayal of Dexter Morgan is still spot on to the point that you think he has truly been starting over his new life for the last ten years.

The voice-over narration still works and we now get a new dead relative for Dexter to bounce ideas off with which was a welcomed presence.

The potential to make things right.

Dexter is one of my favorite series of all time but I was thoroughly disappointed with the series finale. The new series can really set things right for our favorite character, but it needs to make sure it is balancing familiar connections and premises with something new and unique to keep things fresh. So far there is a lot of potential in the new series with different characters and a new mystery to keep us invested, but it needs to be careful about recycling old plots…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Showtime

What’s really new with Dexter?

Sure, we have a brand new setting and new characters, but the plot seems all too familiar. I’m not really complaining because I love this plot, but the show needs to be very careful with how it proceeds.

There is a lot of talk about “change,” but so far the struggle seems all too familiar. We have nine more episodes to go so I’m hoping to truly see a change in our favorite character so that things can resolve in a satisfying way, but I’m also looking for something new and bold to shake things up.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Showtime

I’m in!

I have been anxiously waiting for this series to arrive and so far I am completely invested. It’s so great to see Michael C. Hall on the screen again and I’m confident that the series will present us with a worthy ending this time around!

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Dexter: New Blood in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Riverdale” Season 5 Episode 7: “Fire in the Sky”

Happy Thursday TV fans! After watching The CW’s Riverdale season 5 episode 7, I learned that you actually fight fire with a fire department….

Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.

In episode, “Chapter Eighty-Three: Fire in the Sky,” Archie attempts to recruit the new volunteer fire department for the town. Meanwhile, Cheryl and Toni continue to clash over the Vixens, and Betty discovers a pattern involving Polly’s disappearance.

My top 5 moments from Riverdale season 5 episode 7 are:

5

“Who’s with me?”

After Archie’s family home is set on fire, Archie feels motivated to get the Riverdale fire department running again, but he strikes out when he asks some of his own friends. However, he is not out of luck because some of his new students seem up for the challenge.

Later on, Archie risks his life to try and save someone and has clearly not shed his hero complex over the years. While I love Archie’s heroic side, he needs to remember that he is not alone.

Images courtesy of The CW

Plus, Veronica just bought that shiny new fire truck. However, I’m not sure how practical it is…

4

“This is personal.”

The feud continues between Veronica and Hiram. Veronica is not going to let her father ruin Riverdale and decides to work on a project with her economics class that involves her circulating “monopoly money with her face on it” in town.

Seriously, the funniest thing Jughead has ever said.

The concept seems to be working and it is certainly boosting morale, but things go south when someone inflates the cash and Veronica suspects her father. Only we discover that it was some of the students in her class and they actually feel pretty bad about it.

Well, at least they have been recruited to pick up the trash left out in Riverdale…

3

“The bitch is back in town.”

We have missed you Cheryl Bombshell! Cheryl makes a grand entrance and we watch an epic dance-off between her and one of Toni’s Vixens. Cheryl agrees to co-captain the team with Toni, but it’s clear that they have very different approaches to leadership.

Images courtesy of The CW

Later on, Toni hits Cheryl with some hard truth and it looks like she has a new problem to face when she is exposed for trying to sell a counterfeit painting of her brother. I’m not really sure what this buyer wants from Cheryl and Nana Rose, but she’s not going to go away quietly.

Either way, I was really happy to see Cheryl break out of her shell again. The quiet/crazy version was not doing her any favors.

2

“What do you think it was?”

I didn’t realize that Riverdale had crossed into the sci-fi genre, but this Mothman mystery seems alien in nature. Jughead finds out more and learns that Pop and Nana Rose saw an unexplainable light many years ago outside of Pop’s.

Nana Rose actually kept the body in maple syrup that she discovered and Jughead and Tabitha are beyond confused, but things get even more strange when Jughead witnesses the same phenomenon and then the body mysteriously disappears.

Images courtesy of The CW

So, is it government testing, aliens, or something else?

I’m not sure, but I have to say that I’m digging Jughead’s new look with the glasses. Although he needs to cut out his drinking…that’s going to become a bigger problem soon.

1

“Three’s a pattern.”

Meanwhile, Betty continues to investigate Polly’s disappearance and Hiram is less than helpful when he refuses to let them search his land on Swedlow Swamp. An unidentified body is discovered and Betty also learns about a girl named Margaret Harper who went missing three years ago.

Betty recognizes that three missing girls is definitely a pattern. Later on, Reggie actually helps her out and tells her he found another body. The body is revealed to be Margaret Harper and Reggie tells Hiram that if they let them search the land, he will look like the good guy.

But, what’s his real end game here?

Meanwhile, Betty learns that the Trash Bag Killer or “TBK” is back and we get a few more scattered flashbacks of when Betty was abducted. Honestly, I really hope they do an entire episode dedicated to this because I want to know what happened to Betty.

Are these two serial killers connected?

Is Polly still alive?

We’ll have to wait and see, but Betty is on the case!

Stay tuned, Riverdale fans!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Tell Me Your Secrets” on Prime Video: Lily Rabe puts forth a Valiant Effort

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s dangerous to be afraid…”

Tell Me Your Secrets premiered on Prime Video on February 19th 2021 with ten episodes available to stream now. The series stars Lily Rabe, Amy Brenneman, and Hamish Linklater. Each episode runs for approximately 50 minutes.

The series follows Karen/Emma, who was romantically involved with a serial killer. She is released from prison and goes into witness protection, but the mother of one of the victims is determined to get some answers about where her daughter is and resorts to working with a former criminal to do so.

Here is the trailer:

Tell Me Your Secrets has a talented cast while giving us vibes of Big Little Lies and The Undoing, but you have to wonder why TNT passed on the show a few years ago. The show has a lot of potential, but sometimes less is more. Does Tell Me Your Secrets do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Tell Me Your Secrets Lily Rabe

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Lily Rabe is brilliant.

I was already a fan of hers from American Horror Story, but she really is such a talented actress and I hope to see her in more and more. She really breathed so much life and depth into her character and she kept me coming back for more.

The rest of the cast is fantastic too although I think Amy Brenneman might have over-done it a little bit. Either way, I witnessed some incredible performances despite the lacking plot.

The Cons:

Tell Me Your Secrets 2

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Too many sub-plots.

I understand that the show was attempting to link three characters together, but it felt like there were way too many plots going on and I didn’t have the energy to keep up. It’s actually really frustrating because I think that if this show had just focused on Lily Rabe’s character and her chance to start over, it might have been a lot more entertaining.

It just got over-complicated and the pacing really dragged for me.

Heavy and depressing.

I really enjoy mystery thrillers, but this particular one felt so dark and depressing. I just couldn’t get in the right frame of mind to watch it. Even the music was so strange and it didn’t do the show any favors.

So am I in or out?

Tell Me Your Secrets 3

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

I really think that Lily Rabe did a great job and was probably the only saving grace of this show. There were some interesting things going on in the show, but my focus was split too much and I couldn’t connect to the other story-lines. If you are looking for a thought-provoking thriller, I recommend watching The Undoing instead.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Tell Me Your Secrets in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Riverdale” Season 5 Episode 4: “Purgatory”

Happy Thursday TV fans! After watching The CW’s Riverdale season 5 episode 4, seven years may have gone by, but did everything truly change in the town of Riverdale?

Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.

In episode, “Chapter Eighty: Purgatory,” we jump seven years in the future as Archie returns home to learn that the Riverdale he knew and loved is not the same anymore. Meanwhile, we catch up with the rest of the characters and learn more about their new lives as a new mystery brings them back to town.

My top 5 moments from Riverdale season 5 episode 4 are:

5

“Women can have it all now.”

Great point, V, but I’m not sure if I’m really buying the fact that you used to be the “She Wolf of Wall Street.” Either way, it’s quite catchy and Veronica feels like she has been losing her edge with her new husband, Chadwick.

Married life may not be right for her, but a helicopter accident had her changing her tune slightly.

Even though Veronica’s life has changed and she appears to be settling down in a lot of ways, Archie’s phone call brings her right back to Riverdale.

4

“One hit wonder…”

It should come as no surprise that Jughead became a writer since it was his dream, but I didn’t expect him to become a drunk and a “one hit wonder.” Jughead is also on the run from debt collectors and meets a female stranger who seems more interested in having Jughead read her novel rather than being with him, which shows that his connections are few and far between now.

Riverdale Jughead 1

Images courtesy of The CW

Will there be any leftover sparks now that he has been reunited with Betty? We’ll have to wait and see…

3

“The Blossom curse runs deep.”

Toni is the first person Archie speaks to when he returns home to Riverdale. We know that Archie was in a war and is now being asked to revive the R.O.T.C. program in Riverdale and Toni is very…pregnant.

Riverdale Archie 1

Images courtesy of The CW

But apparently the identity of the father is a secret…

I have a feeling she is a surrogate for Kev and Fangs, but we’ll see about that.

Meanwhile, Toni talks about what happened to Cheryl and it looks like Cheryl has truly become the weird loner of Thornhill. She spends her time painting and even when Toni tells her they could be together, she seems like she has accepted her fate to be alone.

I’m missing the fire from our Queen and I hope it returns soon. We need you Cheryl!

2

“How are the nightmares?”

Out of all of the flash forwards, Betty’s story is the most interesting. Betty joined the FBI and was held captive by the Trash Bag Killer or “TBK.”

She says she is over it, but it’s clear that she is still carrying around a lot of emotional damage from it. TBK escaped so is it possible that he made his way back to Riverdale?

Riverdale Betty 1

Images courtesy of The CW

We know that our girl is no stranger to hunting down serial killers, but I have to say that I really miss the ponytail!

Betty has a new boyfriend as well, but what will happen now that she has been reunited with both Archie and Jughead?

Hmm…

1

Together again.

At the end of the episode, our characters are reunited and are determined to save Riverdale, which has become a lawless town. There is a new mystery surrounding someone named Lynette Fields that has captured their attention, but I have a feeling that a lot more secrets are about to be unraveled. Oh and of course Hiram Lodge is still causing trouble, but Reggie is his right hand man? Honestly Reggie, I expected more from you!

After watching the episode, I liked the vibe of the show. It almost seemed kind of like the sequel to “IT” when everyone returns home, but as long as they leave some of the ridiculous flash forwards behind (seriously Veronica’s future leaves something to be desired), we should be in good shape!

Oh and let’s get those Ghoulies out of Archie’s house…

Stay tuned Riverdale fans!

Freaky was released on November 13th 2020. The film stars Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton, Celeste O’Connor, and Misha Osherovich. The film runs for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

After four teens are brutally murdered by a serial killer, wallflower Millie winds up being chased by the very same killer the next day. After being wounded by a ritualistic weapon, they end up switching bodies the next morning. And so the Freaky Friday fun begins…

Here is the trailer:

Freaky has been done before in several comedy films, but Blumhouse cleverly adds in some slasher gore to liven this plot up. Does the killer idea work out or does it fall flat? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Vince Vaughn is the best part of the movie.

I felt a lot of nostalgia for “The Hot Chick” with Rob Schneider during this film, but in a very good way. Vince Vaughn was laugh out loud funny and his bond with Millie’s two best friends was amazing. I thought that they all played good parts and the chemistry between them all was believable and a lot of fun.

Gory and inventive kills.

The comedy was there, but I was a little worried that the kills would be glossed over, but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of violent gore present in this film. This allowed the film to truly embrace its horror/slasher side with flair.

The Cons:

The wallflower act.

I know Kathryn Newton from Supernatural and I was really excited to see her in this role, but I’m not sure that I really bought the shy, nerdy girl vibe. We’ve seen this in a lot of teen movies and all of a sudden the girl takes off her glasses and something magical happens. I think that Kathryn did a great job once she was playing the serial killer, but I wanted a little bit more from her before that. Either way, I’m a fan.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

This movie was a lot of fun. It nailed the horror comedy vibe and actually brought us a lot of gore too which was great. If you enjoyed Happy Death Day and Ready or Not, this is another great film to add to your watch-list. Enjoy!
