Spoiler-Free Review of “Persuasion” (2022) on Netflix: Dakota Johnson stars in this latest Jane Austen Adaptation

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I almost got married once…”

Persuasion released on July 15th 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix. The Jane Austen adaptation film stars Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding, Mia McKenna-Bruce, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-nine minutes.

After turning down a proposal from the love of her life, Anne is more than shocked when he returns years later.

Here is the trailer:

Persuasion attempts to bring a modern twist to Jane Austen’s classic, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Beautiful cinematography.

This film was gorgeous to look at. The setting, the fashion, and the use of color really suited it well and channeled the time period. I almost felt like I was stepping right into a watercolor painting. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

Dakota Johnson puts forth a valiant effort.

I thought she was absolutely charming as Anne and she saved this film in a lot of ways for me. She was quirky and fun to watch. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while and I thoroughly enjoyed her portrayal. In a lot of ways she had a Bridget Jones vibe going on and I think it worked in her favor to prevent this film from becoming too stale.

The Cons:

Persuasion 2022 Spoiler Free 3

The modernization of the dialogue was cringe-worthy at times…

Jane Austen has created some of the most beautiful strings of words ever. I love reading them and I love hearing them in the films and I was very disappointed when some of my favorite lines from the novel were completely distorted into empty phrases that were clearly meant to make the film seem more modern even though it was set during the original time period. This didn’t translate for me and honestly ruined some of my favorite moments from the book.

The chemistry also seemed off and awkward at times, but there were some redeeming moments here.

The film wasn’t that bad at all, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it would have honored some of the more memorable quotes from the novel for fans of the original novel. It would have felt more authentic and genuine. We don’t need to modernize everything…

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

This film had its moments and Dakota Johnson really shined in this role, but the modern take on Jane Austen’s novel didn’t translate that well at times. I’m still always up for a Jane Austen adaptation, but I was just hoping for a little more here.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Persuasion in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Resident Evil” (2022) on Netflix: Jam-packed but Entertaining!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“The world ended a long time ago…”

Resident Evil premiered on Netflix on July 14th 2022. All eight episodes are available to stream now. The action horror series (based on the popular video game franchise) stars Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, and Paola Núñez. Each episode runs for approximately 48-50 minutes.

Fourteen years after a deadly virus caused the apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights back to find a way to make a difference, revealing what happened to her father and sister back in the year 2022.

Here is the trailer:

Resident Evil brings us an intriguing story for one of the franchise’s most notorious villains while introducing us to a new timeline filled with plenty of Easter Eggs for fans of the franchise. Is this series worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Resident Evil 2022 no spoilers 1

All hail Lance Reddick!

I was already a huge fan of his. I loved him on Fringe and LOST, but wow was he fantastic as Albert Wesker. He brought so much to his character and performance and was the best part of the series for me!

There were some other standout characters as well, including young Jade and Billie. I thought both actresses did a really great job with what they were given and they were very believable as sisters.

Paola Núñez dominated in this series! I wanted her to get even more screen time because she was a scene stealer for sure!

For those of you concerned that you won’t be seeing the regular players featured in this new series, there are plenty of new characters to be excited about so don’t worry!

A layered story with plenty of reveals worth sticking around for.

I appreciated that this series actually took the time to flesh out a well layered story. We even got some character development, which was sometimes missing from the films that favored the action scenes. In a way, this show felt like a mashup between zombie teen series like The Walking Dead: World Beyond (but better) and the previous Resident Evil films.

There were some really great reveals and if you feel confused at first, most things will be explained by the time you get to the end of the series.

There were also plenty of Easter Eggs for fans. I really liked that this series payed respect to the games while creating a new world of its own in the process.

The Cons:

Resident Evil 2022 no spoilers 3

Images courtesy of Netflix

One timeline was a lot stronger than the other…

The series jumped back and forth between the 2022 and 2036 timelines, but I much preferred the 2022 one. I was fully invested in this timeline and every single time we jumped back to the 2036 one, it didn’t have the same impact and it interrupted the natural flow of the story.

I think this improved as the series went on and the connections to the future started to make more sense, but it severely slowed down the pacing in the earlier episodes, which was frustrating at times.

Most of the action took place in the 2036 timeline so it does have its moments, but I really enjoyed the story-line in the past a lot more.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

This series was far from perfect, but it was really entertaining and I LOVED the new characters. As long as you manage your expectations accordingly, you will find a lot to be excited about and I truly hope it gets picked up for a second season!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Boo, Bitch” on Netflix: Supernatural “Mean Girls”

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I’m dead…ish!”

Boo, Bitch released on July 8th 2022 on Netflix with eight episodes available to stream now. The comedy series stars Lana Condor, Zoe Margaret Colletti, Mason Versaw, and Tenzing Norgay Trainor. Each episode runs for approximately 24-26 minutes.

Two best friends attempt to make their senior year a memorable one, but things don’t go according to plan when one of them winds up being a ghost.

Here is the trailer:

Boo, Bitch is very much Booksmart meets Mean Girls with a supernatural edge, but does it do enough to find its own identity separate from these films? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Spooky fun concept.

I really loved the premise of this show. Supernatural comedies are popping up left and right and they are all bringing something unique to the table. Even though this series is about ghosts, it was also about growing up and finding your place in life and I think the series made a valiant attempt to explore all of these themes.

Images courtesy of Netflix

Highlights a genuine friendship.

The best part of the series was this friendship and I appreciated that it felt real. It elevated the show in a lot of ways. I thought both of these characters were fun on their own, but the friendship between them was what made them more interesting and it kept me emotionally invested.

The Cons

Images courtesy of Netflix

Not that original…

This series really borrowed a lot from Mean Girls and Booksmart, but I’m not sure that it ever really found its identity separate from these films, although it did try with its twist reveal.

A lot of the humor didn’t land and the dialogue was really painful at times. I’m not sure that teens actually talk this way and it felt forced and awkward.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in about 75 percent…

I loved the premise of this show and the friendship between Erika and Gia was worth sticking around for, but I’ve seen this type of show before and I’m not sure that it ever found its real identity.

That being said, it’s still a quick binge-watch if you’re looking for a new supernatural comedy to watch.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Maggie” on Hulu: Absolutely Charming!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I’m a psychic…”

Maggie released on July 6th 2022 on Hulu. The rom-com series features thirteen episodes, which are all available to stream now. The show stars Rebecca Rittenhouse, Nichole Sachura, Chloe Bridges, David Del Rio, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Ray Ford. Each episode runs for approximately 22-25 minutes.

Maggie is a psychic who is used to seeing the future for other people, but when she gets a glimpse into her own future, it begins to impact her choices in the present.

Here is the trailer:

Maggie may be the perfect choice for fans of late 90’s rom-coms with its endearing characters and wholesome story. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Maggie Spoiler Free 1

Images courtesy of Hulu

Characters worth your time!

I absolutely fell in love with these characters. They all have something quirky and fun to bring to the table and Rebecca Rittenhouse absolutely shines as Maggie. It’s very easy to root for her character. Even though we have a lot of tropes going on, I still think these characters are a lot of fun to watch!

Stand-out character: Angel

Cute premise!

If you enjoy shows like Younger, That’s So Raven, and Ghosts, you will feel right at home with this one. There is this wholesome feel to it and it’s so entertaining to watch. The episodes are super short so you can watch as many as you want in a row without overdoing it.

It also really channeled the rom-coms from the late 90’s and early 2000’s that I absolutely fell in love with. Sure, it was cheesy at times, but it was also cute too and the episodes got better and better throughout the show.

We got a major cliffhanger at the end of the season and I am crossing my fingers that we get a season 2!

The Cons:

Maggie Spoiler Free 2

Starts off unsure of itself.

The first few episodes felt a little awkward at times. I think the show was trying to find its way and it eventually got there. Some of the humor didn’t really land for me at first and I wasn’t sure if I was going to stick around, but I’m really glad I did because the episodes got really good and continued to improve. It’s safe to say that I’m addicted now and I wish Maggie could give me a reading!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 2 on Netflix: Intense from Start to Finish

*This is a spoiler-free review for season four so feel free to read on!*

“Without heart we’d fall apart…”

Stranger Things season four (volume 2) premiered on Netflix on July 1st 2022 with two new episodes available to stream now. The sci-fi horror series stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, and Natalia Dyer. Each episode runs for approximately 90-140 minutes.

Our beloved group is put to the test as they face off against Vecna in an epic battle.

Here is the trailer:

Stranger Things season four started off with a bang, but does volume 2 stick the landing with the final two episodes of the season? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 spoiler free 1

Images courtesy of Netflix

Doesn’t hold back…

Volume 1 was absolutely fantastic to watch, but we got a lot of set-up and flashbacks so there were some breaks from the intensity. Volume 2 takes us on a thrill ride and never stops. It really felt like more of a movie and I loved every second of it. There were so many edge-of-your-seat moments in this one, along with a lot of really heartfelt and heartbreaking ones. The music was AMAZING and there was one musical moment in particular that I will be re-watching over and over for years to come for sure. Wow! Talk about entertaining…I think it’s safe to say that this was definitely one of my favorite seasons yet.

Other characters prove their worth!

I really liked that we got enough time to explore each character in volume 1 and I am happy to report that volume 2 filled in the blanks with a few other characters that needed a little bit more time and development. Everyone proved that they were worthy to the group in different capacities and I loved watching their journeys.

That’s why I like this show so much. It’s not just about the superhero. It’s about everyone else too. The show reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in that way. You have this one powerful girl who is destined to save the world, but her friends are just as capable and powerful and they all show just how special they are over the seasons.

The same thing can absolutely be said about the characters in Stranger Things. That’s why it makes it so incredibly hard whenever we lose one of these characters. There will be no spoilers in this review, but wow. I shed quite a few tears during volume 2.

A finale to be excited about!

That last shot took my breath away. We are all set up for the final fifth season of the show and I am confident that it will be out of this world. The only problem is…we have to wait for it!

The Cons:

Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 spoiler free 2

Images courtesy of Netflix

Unanswered questions.

That was a lot to take in and now I have all of these unanswered questions stirring in my brain. It’s not really much of a con, but I loved this season so much and it’s really hard to come up with something I didn’t like. I am sure that everything will be resolved in the final season, but there’s a lot left to explore and I’m just hoping that this series can finish strong because these characters all deserve a satisfying ending and so do we!

So am I in or out?

A satisfying conclusion to a fantastic season!!!!!

The first two episodes are available to stream now and the remaining eight will air weekly. The show stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The Pros:

Picks up right where we left off.

There was a major cliffhanger at the end of season one that really set up season two perfectly. Well, we pick up right where we left off as Mabel, Charles, and Oliver are thrown into a new murder mystery to solve. Things get a bit complicated this time around since it seems like someone might be trying to frame them. There’s plenty to be excited about so far in season two. The mystery is a good one and the comedy is delivering once again.

These three characters are so much fun to watch on screen.

I can’t wait to find out more!

We’ve got a few new faces this time around so it will be interesting to see who we can trust and who will become one of our new suspects. Spoiler-Free Review of “Revealer” on Shudder: 80’s Horror Nostalgia and a lot of Fun

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I’m not dying in a peep show booth!”

Revealer released on June 23rd 2022 and is available to stream on Shudder. The horror film stars Caito Aase and Shaina Schrooten. It runs for approximately an hour and 25 minutes.

A stripper and a religious protester end up trapped in a peep show booth together when the apocalypse begins.

Here is the trailer:

Revealer nails the cheesy 80’s horror vibe with flair, giving us a pair of leading ladies to be excited about. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Revealer Spoiler Free 1

Images courtesy of Shudder

Dream duo!

These ladies were fantastic and the best part of the movie! Even though there is an apocalypse going on, the focus is primarily on these two characters so it was important for the acting to be on point and it really was. I had so much fun watching these two and they helped me fall in love with this one!

80’s horror vibe.

I loved that this film took place in the 1980’s and I thought it really channeled the cheesy horror vibe during that time. This was a low budget film but it was still a lot of fun to watch and I think it did a lot with what it had to work with.

More please!

The Cons:

Revealer Spoiler Free 2

Goes on for a little too long…

The movie wasn’t really long, but I think the plot was dragged out just a little bit. I think this might have worked better as an hour long part of an anthology series, but it still was a really fun ride so I’m not too disappointed with this.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Chloe” on Prime Video: A Seductive Thriller with a Deeper Mystery at its Core

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I just like to decide how people see me…”

Chloe originally premiered back in February 2022 on BBC One, but released on Prime Video on June 24th 2022. The mystery-drama series stars Erin Doherty, Poppy Gilbert, Billy Howle, Pippa Bennett, and Brandon Michael Hall. There are six episodes in total, which are all available to stream on Prime Video. Each episode runs for approximately 56-58 minutes.

A lonely girl named Becky spends most of her time following Chloe’s account on Instagram, but when Chloe mysteriously dies, she decides to create a new identity to get close to the people in Chloe’s life.

Here is the trailer:

Chloe takes on a Single White Female premise, but also unravels a more complex mystery below the surface, stepping away from your standard stalker thriller series. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

More than your average stalker-thriller series…

At first glance, I thought I knew what I was going to get with this series and I was prepared for a guilty-pleasure watch. However, I was pleasantly surprised that there was a lot more to this particular series. The trailer was kind of deceiving, but luckily the mystery was solid enough to keep me invested. There were a lot of layers in this one, which helped it find its own separate identity in the genre.

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Good performances.

Everyone did a really great job in this one. I thought the actors understood their characters and they delivered with their portrayals. Even though I wasn’t a fan of every character, the performances kept me coming back for more.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

The episodes were way too long…

There were only six episodes, but it took me forever to get through each one. I think there was way too much extra fluff in these. The pacing just didn’t work. This improved by the time I got to the last three episodes, but I really struggled before that and kept dozing off. This could have been easily avoided if the episodes were a little shorter and if the plot had stayed on course.

I wasn’t a huge fan of our main character either. I didn’t like how she treated those around her and even though there were reasons for some of her actions, I couldn’t excuse others, which made it difficult for me to connect with her. I would have liked to have seen more flashbacks and scenes with Chloe because she had a mysterious charm to her and I wanted to know more.

I also didn’t get some of the answers I wanted by the time I reached the end of the series, which was really frustrating. I wasn’t a fan of the ending at all.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Prime Video

I’m in about 75 percent…

This series is definitely more than meets the eye with top-notch performances, but it struggled with its overall pacing.

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Black Phone” in Theaters: A Horror Movie Worth Your Time

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You don’t have to be scared…”

The Black Phone released in theaters on June 24th 2022. The horror film stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-two minutes.

Set in the late 1970’s, a young boy is abducted by the neighborhood “grabber” and held in a soundproof basement when he begins to receive calls from the killer’s past victims on a disconnected phone.

Here is the trailer:

The Black Phone features a villain who is beyond terrifying, along with exceptional characters to root for against all odds. Is it worth a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Blumhouse Productions

Terrifying in a very real way…

I don’t know about you, but this is the type of film that scares me the most. Sure, there are supernatural/paranormal elements in this one, but this isn’t your typical gore fest or jump scare horror film. There is this unsettling and creepy vibe present throughout the film. It crawls under your skin, festering into something beyond scary. There are so many real and cruel moments in this film that make this way more than your average horror film.

Ethan Hawke truly immersed himself into this role with sadistic perfection and I think I’ll be having nightmares about his character for quite a long time…

Images courtesy of Blumhouse Productions

Characters to root for.

Finney and Gwen were fantastic characters. Gwen was my favorite and I think that Madeleine McGraw was truly wonderful. I was very invested in what happened to them, which made this movie even more absorbing. I think they nailed the brother-sister relationship and really helped the audience connect with them on a deeper level.

Even though this is a horror movie, it was also a movie about self-discovery and growing up as well.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Blumhouse Productions

Unanswered questions and some fuzzy details…

By the time I got to the end of the film, I was satisfied, but I also had a lot of unanswered questions. There were details that didn’t add up from some of the flashbacks, which had me scratching my head. Since this was such an engaging watch, I wanted to know more and perhaps I will invest my time in reading the short story by Joe Hill to fill in some of the blanks.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 100 percent!!!!!

A terrifying and captivating watch from start to finish!

This movie was so well done and I was so impressed with the performances all around, making this a must see watch for horror fans!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” on Prime Video: Seasonal Heartfelt Treat

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“This could be my summer wish…”

The Summer I Turned Pretty released on Prime Video on June 17th 2022. The young adult drama series (based on the novel of the same name) features seven episodes available to stream now. The show stars Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Rachel Blanchard, and Jackie Chung. Each episode runs for approximately 45 minutes.

Belly and her mother visit their family friends every summer, but this particular summer becomes one to remember when she winds up caught in a love triangle as she tries to figure out who she is and what she truly wants in life.

Here is the trailer:

The Summer I Turned Pretty may seem like your average coming-of-age teen drama at first glance, but it is such a refreshing and enjoyable watch filled with emotional and heartwarming moments. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Truly moving.

Sometimes it’s good to watch something that really makes you feel. I felt like I was on an emotional roller-coaster while watching this one. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with each and every one of these characters. This series was just so well done and so perfect. I went into this one thinking I would be getting a generic teen series and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I am hooked and I can’t wait to see what happens in season 2 since that has already been confirmed prior to the season 1 release. Yay!

Fantastic characters!

Usually when I watch these types of shows, I gravitate toward one or two stand-out characters. Well, it was hard to do that with this series because I absolutely loved every single character. Everyone brought something different to the table and the actors did a great job with their portrayals. The friendships were truly magical to watch and I felt like I was transported on vacation along with them.

The Cons:

Predictable at times…

I’ve seen this type of show before and I’ve read this type of book before. You will probably be able to figure out what’s going on and the outcome with very little effort. That being said, I didn’t really care. This was such an enjoyable and real watch for me. Even though there were a lot of clichés, this show still managed to reel us in anyway.

The series made some changes from the book, but I still think that fans will be happy with it overall.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 1000 percent!!!!!!

A magical and heartfelt watch!

Pure and honest perfection…

This has now become one of my favorite series of all time and I can’t wait to watch season 2!
