Happy Monday TV fans! After watching BBC America’s Killing Eve season 3 episode 5, I learned that “being strong is a choice,” but what happens when you are presented with a chance to set things right? Do you give in to the darkness or do you walk away?
Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.
In last night’s episode, “Are You From Pinner?” Villanelle travels home to Mother Russia to reunite with her family. After catching up with them and dominating the Harvest Festival, Villanelle faces her toughest kill yet, but it may have just created even more confusion for her.
My top 5 moments from Killing Eve season 3 episode 5 are:

“My dead sister who’s alive.”
As Villanelle heads home, everyone is initially confused about who she is and what she is doing in their home. Villanelle hilariously plays along and asks her stepfather who he is, throwing questions at questions to make things even more confusing.
When Villanelle’s brother walks in, he recognizes Villanelle right away and is clearly in shock since both he and her mother thought that she was dead.
Welcome home, sis.

“Why did you come?”
It’s clear that Villanelle’s brother has truly missed her and he proceeds to ask her why she came. Villanelle seems unsure of this answer initially, but we know that Villanelle has been searching for this missing piece of hers for quite some time.
Whether it’s to achieve a sense of belonging or to contemplate love, Villanelle is here for answers. Only she may not like what she finds out.
I have to say that I loved the pictures of Villanelle when she was little. I guess she’s always been a little bit strange…

“This is fun!”
The highlight of the episode for me was when Villanelle attended the Harvest Festival with her family. Villanelle absolutely dominates every single carnival game and ends up with a lot of awesome prizes. She has a lot of fun and her brothers appear to be really connecting with her and vice versa.
Seriously, I’d love to go to a carnival with Villanelle!

“I want to feel like one.”
Even though Villanelle is getting along with her brothers, there is an awkward tension between her and her mother. Villanelle’s mother alters her old 80’s jumpsuit for her which was a touching moment, but things go sour pretty quickly.
Villanelle pretends to be bleeding from her eyes while chopping up vegetables in an adorable apron and her mother points out that she always laughs at things that aren’t funny.
Villanelle is clinging to a sense of innocence, desperately wanting to remember what it felt like to be a child, but her mother seems ready for Villanelle to leave.

“I think I need to kill you.”
After Villanelle’s mother tells her that she doesn’t belong there and that she has always been the darkness, Villanelle finally has this moment where she sees things as they are. She tells her mother that she also has a darkness in her and reminds her that she abandoned her.
Villanelle comes to the realization that she needs to kill her mother and ensures that her half brother and brother are out of the house before it explodes. She gets tickets for her half brother to see Elton John, which was adorable, proving that there is still a goodness within Villanelle.
In an effort to come to terms with her identity, she severs her link to her mother, but when she is traveling home, she is nervous and anxious. This is an extremely intimate kill for Villanelle. We usually see Villanelle smiling or enjoying life after a kill, but as she wears the 80’s jumpsuit, she has mixed emotions running through her.
This will clearly impact Villanelle and I’m curious to see how her character develops as a result of it. I thought that this episode was necessary and well done. I have been waiting for an episode like this for quite some time and I thought it truly allowed us to understand Villanelle’s past and character a lot more. Once again, Jodie Comer’s performance was so real and moving. She’s absolutely incredible.
