Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Mick” season 2 episode 14: “The Church”

Happy Wednesday!  After watching Fox’s The Mick season 2 episode 14 last night, Mickey learns the hard way that God really is everywhere and is literally “smited” by him in front of church full of strangers.  Well perhaps there is a reasonable explanation, but everyone is convinced it is a miracle happening before their eyes.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Church,” Mickey is concerned about Alba and recommends church as a possible way to get through to her.  Meanwhile, Jimmy enlists the efforts of Sabrina to help prove to Ben that God does exist and Chip contemplates life as an altar boy.  My top 5 moments from The Mick season 2 episode 14 are:

5

Mickey’s bet with Alba.

In the beginning of the episode, Mickey is face-timing with Alba and reveals that she bet Alba that she couldn’t make it to the store and back in under 5 minutes.  While Sabrina and Chip acknowledge that this is pretty much impossible, Alba is not about to let $100 go out the window.  She screams “I’m coming in hot” right before she crashes into the house.  Luckily, Alba is ok but we discover this is the 3rd car she has destroyed.  Her drinking problem is getting out of hand for sure and Mickey reminds the kids that “there is only one Alba.”

4

Mickey is not a fan of rehab.

Taking her injuries very seriously, Alba admits that maybe she needs to go to rehab so that she can clean up her life.  Mickey doesn’t believe in rehab, however; claiming that it ruins too many good musicians and suggests church as an alternative solution.  She explains the wonders of church to the family, including the endless supply of free donuts and wine and that it allows you to chance to confess away all of the bad stuff.  While she may have her priorities slightly out of line, Mickey’s heart is in the right place as she does want Alba to get better.

3

Chip is inspired by Father Zach.

Mickey and the rest of the family are surprised that the priest, Father Zach is young, funny, and really down to earth.  Chip is enamored by his comedy routine in the beginning of his sermon and is thrilled when Father Zach comes over to the house to shoot some hoops with him.  Father Zach breaks it down for Chip and explains that God is the rock-star and he’s basically like the “DJ remixing his hottest jams.”  Father Zach is full of surprises as he reveals some heavy God-inspired tattoo ink and the ability to dunk, inspiring Chip who now really considers “cloaking himself in God’s love” to find his own calling.

2

Jimmy is on a mission to prove God’s existence to Ben.

Jimmy is appalled at Ben’s behavior and attitude in church when he blows out God’s candle and explains that he doesn’t really believe in God but you know the songs are cool.  Jimmy comically refers to Ben as a “psycho” and enlists the help of Sabrina to help bring Ben into the light.  He starts with showing Ben a sunrise as a proof of God’s work, but Ben is unimpressed and refers to it as “smog” which he learned about in school.  He then tries to share one of his own moments when he first noticed God’s presence which involves Jimmy reacting to a long musical interlude with crappy speakers, but Ben is not a fan.  Determined to prove God’s existence to Ben, Jimmy says with confidence, “let’s show him God.”  He dresses up in a ridiculous Zeus-like costume, beard and all, and bursts in to save the day, pointing ominously at Ben and reminding him to do well in school.  While Ben is now convinced that God exists, he is now taking it to a new extreme and even envisions himself as a future pope.  Perhaps witnessing a miracle was a little overboard, but Jimmy is excited his plan worked successfully.

1

Mickey is “the serpent.”

Mickey is furious that her plan is back-firing as she just wanted to help Alba confess her sins so she could move on with her life.  When Alba begins inviting the priest, Father Zach over to watch football and drink beer, Mickey is not buying it.  She complains to Alba that she feels like she can’t be herself around him and wants him gone.  When this gets her nowhere, Mickey insists on tattling on Father Zach to the head pastor, Father McCormick.  Father McCormick explains that Father Zach is not guilty of any infractions and admits that he isn’t really a fan either but that he brings in some serious donations.  A light bulb goes off in Mickey’s head as she realizes that “it’s a money thing.”  She takes it a step too far, however; and bribes Father McCormick with a Porsche.  She tells him “don’t do it for me.  Do it for this guy,” pointing at Jesus Christ and walking out with the satisfaction that she has won.  To her dismay, Father McCormick crashes the car into a pond, but is ok.  However, Father Zach is no longer being transferred and begins his sermon about temptation and the serpent.  Mickey can’t take it anymore and interrupts his sermon, taking it very personally.  She reveals that “I’m the serpent he’s talking about!”  She gets up on the altar and starts demanding that he prove the existence of God, when she gets accidentally lit on fire by the candle and Jimmy bursts in dressed as God to save her.  While not exactly what she was anticipating, Mickey does end up with some serious morphine in the hospital to help her cope, but it looks like her Church days are done for now.

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and comments on The Mick below. Happy viewing!
