Spoiler-Free Review of “The Inheritance” (2024) on Demand: Watered Down Version of “Ready or Not” Has Its Moments

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“We’re all here…together…”

The Inheritance (2024) released in limited theaters and on demand on July 12th 2024. The horror suspense film stars Briana Middleton, Rachel Nichols (P2), David Walton, Peyton List (School Spirits), and Bob Gunton.

A billionaire invites his children to his home to celebrate his 75th birthday, but informs them all that he is about to die and that they must protect him until midnight if they want to keep their inheritance.

Here is the trailer:

The Inheritance channels films like Ready or Not and Abigail with its premise, but does it measure up to them? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Some creepy moments worth noting.

This film did a decent job with its setting. The house was really cool to look at it. I wish we had gotten a bit more time to explore it, but I dug it overall. There were some unsettling moments sprinkled into this one. I wouldn’t say that this film was that scary by any means, but it did create some suspenseful moments that had me intrigued.

Solid final thirty minutes.

This film didn’t really find its groove until the last thirty minutes. That’s when I was most invested and I appreciated the twists thrown our way. It finally captured the vibe it was going for and followed its own story separate from some of the films it was clearly inspired by. I just wish we got there sooner…

The Cons:

Felt too familiar initially.

Ready or Not and Abigail are two of my favorite horror films so I was excited that this film had that kind of vibe. However, I think that it relied on this too much in the beginning of the movie and didn’t spend enough time fleshing out its own plot. We eventually got there, but for the majority of the movie, I felt like I was watching a lazy reenactment of some of my favorite films and it didn’t come close to them, which was disappointing.

I also feel like this film took itself too seriously. Part of the reason why I love Ready or Not and Abigail so much is because they add in some dark humor as well to lighten things up. This film could have benefited from that. So many moments felt forced and weighed down and I wasn’t super invested in all of the characters even though I like a lot of the actors in this one.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

The Inheritance doesn’t measure up to similar films in this genre, but it’s a quick watch and entertaining enough with some redeeming qualities.

I would manage your expectations on this one, but it was not bad by any means.

DON’T TAKE THE JOB…

It was only supposed to be temporary…but when Olivia Crewe accepts a new position that seems too good to be true, she soon discovers that twelve other girls previously had the same job as her. Only none of them lasted for more than thirty days. No notice. Nothing…right before they mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

My supernatural thriller Girl Number Thirteen is out now! I hope you enjoy!

The Pros:

Great cast!

A horror movie starring Minka Kelly AND Maggie Grace?! Sign me up please! I was so excited when I saw that both of these talented ladies were in this one and Dermot Mulroney is no stranger to this genre after recently starring in Scream VI.

I think that everyone did a good enjoy with their roles, but I guess I was hoping for a different kind of movie here. That being said, I enjoyed seeing them together on screen and I hope to see Maggie and Minka in more horror movies in the future.

An eerie mystery that captured my attention.

This film didn’t waste too much time in the opening. We got right to the mystery at hand and I have to say that I was drawn in for the most part. I wanted to know what was happening and how it was connected to Minka Kelly’s character.

The setting was aesthetically pleasing and there were some genuinely spooky moments…although I wouldn’t say that anything was that scary. This really felt like more of a psychological thriller than a horror suspense flick.

The Cons:

Way too long.

I felt like I was watching this film for an exceptionally long time. While the opening got right to the mystery, things started to spiral off and really drag after this. There was A LOT of unnecessary fluff to sift through. The musical score put me to sleep and I thought that the end reveal was kind of predictable. It wasn’t horrible, but I guess I wanted more of a twist here.

I’m 50/50 on this one…

Blackwater Lane starts off with mysterious potential, but it settles for a safe reveal.

I really wanted to like this movie with that cast, but it needed a serious boost and a better twist to really sell me on it.
