Spoiler-Free Review of “The Irregulars” on Netflix: Elementary Plot by the Numbers

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“A darkness has entered this city…”

The Irregulars premiered on Netflix on March 26th 2021 with eight episodes available to stream now. The series stars Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, Harrison Osterfield, Royce Pierreson, and Henry Lloyd Hughes. Each episode runs for approximately 55-60 minutes.

The series is set in Victorian London and follows a group of teen outcasts who are hired by Dr. Watson to investigate supernatural occurrences. We quickly learn that they are not hired by accident, leading to a mystery involving the infamous Sherlock Holmes.

Here is the trailer:

The Irregulars presents us with an interesting premise, but a plot we have seen many times before. However, does it work in the show’s favor to have Watson and Holmes in the background? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Interesting characters and solid performances.

Stand-out performances go to Thaddea Graham and Darci Shaw as sisters, Bea and Jessie. I also thoroughly enjoyed Leopold’s character portrayed by Harrison Osterfield. Some of the other supporting characters could have been easily interchanged with other stock characters, but I thought there was good chemistry and believable moments between the sisters.

That being said, I was underwhelmed by both Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes and I realize we are supposed to be focusing on the teen characters, but I would have still gravitated toward them without being forced to do so because of unlikable portrayals.

Cringe-worthy horror sprinkled in.

The show presented us with a mix of several different genres, but I was pleased with the elements of horror. Even though we have a young adult group of characters, the show didn’t hold anything back in terms of some of the dark supernatural occurrences we witness and I appreciated that.

The Cons:

Lack of cohesiveness between the group.

While I enjoyed many of the characters individually, there was something lacking between the group as a whole which made it difficult to connect and root for them. Everything felt very dark and depressing and I wanted to see a little bit more humor thrown into the mix even though the show made a failed effort several times.

This is not the first film or show we have seen about young adults working together to take on a mystery or an evil threat. The Goonies, The Lost Boys, IT, and Stranger Things all come to mind. Part of what makes this formula work so well is the overall chemistry between the group. I think that if the show had focused on that a little bit more, I would have liked the end result more.

A tired plot with nothing new and super long episodes.

Each episode is almost an hour long, which did not work in the show’s favor. I felt like many of the episodes dragged and there was fluff where it didn’t need to be. While I found Jessie’s psychic/supernatural abilities interesting, I have seen this plot before. There is a rift threatening to destroy the world and only one girl may be able to stop it…

That being said, I love this plot and some of my favorite shows and films feature it, but I wanted something new thrown our way to prevent it from feeling stale and overdone and I’m afraid this show did not achieve that for me. The reveals were also really predictable.

I also think that the show didn’t really discover what it truly wanted to be. Episode three probably came the closest to actual brilliance, but the other episodes did not measure up and just lacked finesse.

So am I in or out?

I’m 50/50 on this one.

The show had a lot of entertaining qualities, but there were so many things that just really frustrated me. I think that with several tweaks, this show could have been really spectacular, but it failed to deliver, which was extremely disappointing.

I don’t think it presented the Watson/Holmes dynamic that well and it almost seemed like a manipulative way to earn viewers. The show had some glimmers of value and entertainment, but I’m not sure that you need to rush this to the top of your watch-list.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Irregulars in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Shameless” season 11 episode 11: “The Fickle Lady is Calling it Quits”

Happy Monday TV fans! After watching Showtime’s Shameless season 11 episode 11, we were reminded that “either you run the day or the day runs you.”

Please note major spoilers are ahead if you have not watched the latest episode yet.

In season 11, episode 11, “The Fickle Lady is Calling it Quits,” Ian and Mickey adjust to life on the West Side while Kev and V prepare for their move. Meanwhile, Liam spends the day with Frank to cheer him up and Debbie searches for love.

My top 5 moments from Shameless season 11 episode 11 are:

5

“Are we really doing this?”

Kev and V have received an offer on their house and start to prepare for their move to Louisville. Kev is determined to learn as much as he can about Kentucky and even takes out books from the library to brush up on his knowledge. There is a bitter sweet nostalgia throughout the episode as Kev and V take a look at a photo from when they first started working together at the Alibi.

Even though that chapter of their lives is over, they are moving on to a new adventure and as long as they are together, I’m confident they will be happy.

I’m seriously going to miss these two!

4

“I need a life.”

Debbie continues to mope around about her family all moving out and worries about being truly alone. V tries to tell her that she needs to love herself before she can find love, but Tami reminds her that part of her issues come directly from Frank.

Debbie punches Frank in the face and he tells her that she will only find love if she meets someone who is even more of a loser than her so that they will never leave her.

As fate would have it, Debbie meets Heidi, who was recently released from prison and certainly seems to live life on the edge.

I’m not sure if this is the perfect match and I still wish that Sandy would come back, but I guess we have one episode to find out if that’s meant to be or not.

3

“I can’t play this game anymore.”

Carl is asked to apologize to the jerk in the Mercedes and follows along, but he can’t sit by when the man starts saying ignorant things. Carl actually delivers a moving speech and says he wants to stand up for those who don’t have a voice, which lands him to a demotion…as a meter maid.

Carl wants to really be more of a “meter master” and does the best he can with his new job, leading to some hilarious moments but he does bump into Trish who is now extremely pregnant. Is the baby Carl’s?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he is also going to be a new father. Either way, I think that the character growth of Carl is worth mentioning.

2

“F*ckin West Side.”

Mickey is not really adjusting to life on the West Side. He hates the bright moon and the lack of street noise at night and ends up spending the night at the Gallagher home just to get some rest. Ian seems to be adjusting to his new life a little easier, but Mickey had me dying laughing during several moments.

After finding out that the apartment will not have furniture, he decides to make a scene at the pool and starts taking the chairs to Ian’s horror.

Later on, Ian tells Mickey that he will stay wherever he wants to make him happy and it looks like Gallavich is going to give this new life a try.

Maybe they can take some furniture from the Gallagher home to make it truly feel like home again!

1

“Let’s have some fun.”

Liam reminds Frank that he is just having a bad morning and tells him that he wants to do “Frank things” for the day to have some fun, which was really sweet…in a Gallagher way.

I think this is just what Frank needed, but at the end of the episode, Frank is shooting up and leaving a note for the Gallagher family.

So, is this it for Frank?

I really don’t want to see Frank go, but I’m also sort of wondering how else we can bring back other characters in the last episode and a funeral makes sense.

Frank told Liam that he lived his life the way he wanted to, but I’m not sure if the Gallagher family is truly ready to say goodbye and neither am I!

Only one episode left to find out how it all ends…

Stay tuned Gallagher fans!

I hope you enjoyed the recap and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Shameless in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Riverdale” Season 5 Episode 10: “The Pincushion Man”

Happy Thursday TV fans! After watching The CW’s Riverdale season 5 episode 10, I learned that when people are dying, you sometimes need to make time for a term paper.

Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.

In episode, “Chapter Eighty-Six: The Pincushion Man,” Betty and Alice’s party is crashed by some familiar faces. Meanwhile, Jughead and Tabitha grow closer, but it looks like Betty may be the only one truly on his mind, and Veronica’s ex is determined to make her life a living hell.

My top 5 moments from Riverdale season 5 episode 10 are:

5

“You follow the order.”

Archie is surprised to hear that his commanding officer wants to present with him with the Silver Eagle award because he doesn’t feel right about what happened on the mission. We later discover that perhaps this was a dirty mission after all and Archie doesn’t feel right about just following orders.

We know that Archie is always going to stand up for what he feels is right, but is he in over his head here?

4

“You don’t owe him anything.”

Chadwick rears his annoying head and Veronica decides to go out to New York for closure. She talks more about the helicopter crash and tells Archie that she initially wished for Chad to die and feels horrible about what happened. Archie reminds Veronica that she doesn’t owe Chad anything, but she feels like she needs to do this.

Meanwhile, Chadwick has a romantic dinner at home planned for her and tries to bring some nostalgia to their final date, which leads to some extremely poor decisions by Veronica. They kiss and more is implied, but what about Archie?

Also, you are the “She-Wolf” of Wall Street, but you couldn’t tell that Chadwick was playing you?

Chadwick reveals later that he made some bad investment decisions that involve Veronica’s company and that if she divorces him, he will sue her. I can’t say that I am surprised by these actions, but now Veronica is stuck staying in New York to handle things.

Chadwick is a mini Hiram, but Veronica needs to step up her game so she can truly move on with her life.

Your move, V.

3

“There is no curse.”

We get to witness a lovely date between Cheryl and Minerva as she takes her out to the maple groves, but we discover that they are dry and Nana Rose tells her it’s because of the curse.

Cheryl is determined to point out that there is no curse as she is finally taking ownership back of her life. Later on, Reggie and Hiram make amends and Nana Rose sells the groves to them, but apparently this deal is void because Cheryl had her declared senile years ago.

Reggie decides to light the groves on fire, but maybe the curse is real after all…

The Blossom ladies pray for wind and not all of the groves are damaged.

But, why does Hiram want to control them and what is the deal with Reggie?

As much as I like to see Cheryl happy, I also am still rooting for Choni in the end. Let’s just hope it’s not too late for them.

2

“Let’s just be friends.”

In the beginning of the episode we see Jughead and Tabitha dancing at Pop’s and they actually share a kiss. However, Jughead tells her that his life is complicated and wants to just be friends, which Tabitha actually seems OK with.

Images courtesy of The CW

Meanwhile, Jughead needs to produce some pages and tells her that he needs to do some “Maple Mushrooms” so he can write something brilliant. I’m not making this stuff up…

Tabitha handcuffs Jughead to his desk so he can get some work done and checks in on him periodically, but Jughead’s trippy hallucinations reveal that he is not over Betty just yet as we actually get a steamy and passionate Bughead scene.

Images courtesy of The CW

The hallucinations turn bloody; however, as Jughead then starts seeing the Mothman and Tabitha later finds his bloody handcuffs left on the desk and Jughead has disappeared.

So, what did Jughead see?

Was he truly taken by something or did he wander off on his drug trip?

We’ll have to wait to find out, but this mystery surrounding Jughead is getting weirder and weirder.

At least we had that Bughead scene though and I actually really feel bad for Tabitha. She has a lot of patience!

1

“Let’s just get through whatever this is.”

Easier said than done, Alice. We find out more about Glen as we discover that he is actually writing his dissertation on serial killers in the Cooper family. Betty is extremely upset and rightfully so and Glen gets a slap in the face.

Images courtesy of The CW

However, that’s not all. After Hiram decides to shake things up with an intentional prison break, we start to remember just how many family members are locked up behind bars. Uncle Frank helps out Archie and Penelope is back in the fold, but Charles and Chic have some serious plans.

They break up the birthday party for the twins and want to be married by Alice and she actually begins the ceremony. You gotta love Alice.

Glen walks in with bad timing and Charles decides that he wants to play “The Pincushion man” and wants one of the twins to stab Glen.

Betty tries to get him to see reason and says that she will do it to spare the innocence of her niece and nephew. Betty actually stabs Glen, but purposely gives him a flesh wound and turns the tables on Chic and Charles.

We know that Glen and Charles both went to the hospital and Betty is still motivated to find out what happened to Polly even though the case has been re-assigned.

Is Polly still alive?

I’m thinking so and I can’t wait to follow Betty on this journey, but we’re going to have to wait a while for a new episode.

This was a jam-packed mid-season finale, but I still have so many questions that will remain unanswered for quite a while.

New episodes return August 11th!

Stay tuned, Riverdale fans!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Riverdale in the comments section below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
