Spoiler-Free Review of “The Lake” on Prime Video: Quick Dramedy has its Moments!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Do you know how parenting works?”

The Lake premiered on Prime Video on June 17th 2022. All eight episodes are available to stream now. The dramedy series stars Julia Stiles, Jordan Gavaris, Madison Shamoun, Travis Nelson, and Terry Chen. Each episode runs for approximately 35-37 minutes.

Justin attempts to reconnect with his biological daughter after giving her up for adoption by taking her to visit the lake he grew up on, only to discover that his wicked step-sister is living in his old home.

Here is the trailer:

The Lake has a fantastic cast and a good balance of crude humor and heartwarming moments to make a bold statement, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

The moments between Justin and Billie are the best part of the show.

Billie is less than thrilled to be spending the summer with her biological father, but these two form a believable and heartwarming bond. They make hilarious partners in crime and there are also some really genuine moments between them. This show could have easily just focused on its other plot involving the feud between Justin and his step-sister, but I actually preferred the bonding moments between Justin and Billie, which gave this show a lot more layers.

Stand-out episodes.

Some episodes were a lot stronger than others, but I absolutely adored episodes 2, 5, and 6 (my personal favorite). If you’re a horror fan, please check out episode 6 because it was absolutely brilliant! The episodes are all on the short side, which makes this one pretty easy to binge-watch over the weekend. Plus, the setting is gorgeous and I often felt like I was watching a HGTV series at times, which isn’t a bad thing!

The Cons:

Rocky start and goes on for a little too long…

The first episode felt very unsure of itself, but I think the series eventually found its way. The crude humor was a little overbearing at times and the plot seemed slightly repetitive. I personally think that this series should have only been 5 or 6 episodes because it lost some steam toward the very end. Either way, there were enough fun and entertaining episodes to keep me invested throughout my watch.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

If you’re looking for a summer-themed dramedy, you’re in the right place. You can easily put this show on for a nice change of pace and enjoy a lot of the episodes. This series is far from perfect, but I still had a lot of fun watching it overall.
