Spoiler-Free Review of “Not Okay” on Hulu: Thoroughly Entertaining with a Strong Message

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I want to be known…”

Not Okay premiered on Hulu on July 29th 2022. The dramedy film stars Zoey Deutch, Mia Isaac, Dylan O’Brien, and Nadia Alexander.

A lonely and desperate photo editor invents a trip to Paris to impress the boy she likes, but ends up getting caught up in a consuming lie in order to become “a somebody” on social media.

Here is the trailer:

Not Okay creates a story that is completely relevant in the world we live in, showing us just how harmful a lie can be to those who have survived through an actual trauma, while showing us the other side of the spectrum. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Zoey Deutch is incredible!

I am already a huge fan of hers, but she is fantastic in this. Danni is not a likable character by any means, but she is relatable in a lot of ways and I thought that Zoey Deutch really portrayed this role in a believable way. Danni could literally be a number of lonely and confused girls on social media right now trying to make a name for themselves.

Mia Isaac was also really terrific as Rowan and truly moved me with her speech at the end. Wow…

Images courtesy of Hulu

Highlights an accurate depiction of trying to become “somebody” on social media.

I was surprised by how much I really liked this film. I think it did a phenomenal job with the subject matter and the ending was truly moving. I think it’s very easy to think of one of the characters as a “villain,” but the film also shows us that people are capable of change, even though it may take something extreme to finally realize what it means to be seen and to be heard without being constantly judged.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Not a fan of some of the supporting characters…

I don’t really have too many cons for this particular movie. I wasn’t a fan of some of the supporting characters (mostly Colin), but I totally get the point of him so it wasn’t a huge issue. It just made me scratch my head at how ridiculous some people can be when they’re trying to be someone they’re clearly not. This is exposed in the film; however, so I can’t really actually fault it. I just grew tired of hearing him talk after a while…

That being said, Dylan O’Brien did a great job with what he was given!

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

An accurate and relevant watch well worth your time!

Zoey Deutch is fantastic and that was probably one of the best film endings I have seen in a long time…

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Reef: Stalked” on Shudder: A Shark Addicted to Paddling

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“All we can do is paddle…”

The Reef: Stalked released on Shudder on July 29th 2022. The survival horror film stars Teressa Liane, Saskia Archer, Ann Truong, and Kate Lister. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty minutes.

A group of friends head out on kayaks for a relaxing day of diving and fun, but wind up stalked by a great white shark instead.

Here is the trailer:

The Reef: Stalked gives kayaks a whirl for our toothy friend, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Shudder

Some intense moments!

Some of the jump scares were a little much, but there were some really intense moments during this film when the shark was stalking these characters. I was on the edge of my seat and was genuinely terrified. The Reef is one of my favorite shark movies so I had very high hopes for this and I think it did deliver some nail-biting moments for sure.

Images courtesy of Shudder

Pretty scenery and a different approach.

I’m not sure where this one was shot, but I thought the scenery was absolutely beautiful. When the characters initially set out on their kayaks, I was thoroughly enjoying the views under and over the water.

I’ve seen close to every shark movie ever made and the formula has become very predictable, but still enjoyable. That being said, I thought that this film took a different approach with how these characters were ultimately going to stay alive while the shark was stalking them. It broke the formula a little bit, which was a plus for me.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Shudder

Repetitive flashbacks and some crazy bad acting…

Our main character went through a trauma that is explained during the film. She repeatedly gets flashbacks of this (even though she didn’t technically witness it). I totally understood the parallels given her current situation, but I thought they really dragged these out.

There were also a few supporting characters that had laughable reactions to the shark. I enjoyed the main characters, but wow…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Shudder

I’m in about 75 percent…

I’m always going to give any shark movie a try and I thoroughly enjoy this genre. There’s plenty to enjoy with this one, but I don’t think it did anything that extraordinary to set itself apart from similar films that have come out recently.

I’d recommend watching Shark Bait or Deep Blue Sea 3 first for a more entertaining ride. There’s still enough here to have fun with, but I would manage your expectations accordingly.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Reef: Stalked in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” on HBO Max: A Teen Slasher Series done right!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You can’t ignore the past forever…”

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premiered on HBO Max on July 28th 2022. The teen mystery drama series (based on Pretty Little Liars) stars Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Maia Reficco, Malia Pyles, and Mallory Bechtel. There are three episodes available to stream now. The remaining seven episodes will air weekly. Each episode runs for approximately 50-52 minutes.

After a tragic event twenty years ago, a group of friends are targeted by A, connecting the past to the present.

Here is the trailer:

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin may be the most entertaining spin-off series yet, as it gives fans of the original show plenty to be excited about with a clever slasher spin. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Pretty Little Liars Original Sin Spoiler Free 1

Images courtesy of HBO Max

The slasher spin is genius!

I absolutely loved the original Pretty Little Liars series and looked forward to coming up with crazy theories about A every week. I watched both spin-off series after that and was really excited about this new series.

The other series all focused on a teen mystery and so does this one, but it has a slasher vibe that will remind you more of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. A is still sneaky with the signature unknown texts and secret messages, but they are also a lot more brutal this time around and I am personally loving every second of it!

The past and present timelines are both interesting!

Similar to Yellowjackets, this new spin-off series does a good job of presenting us with an addicting mystery surrounding two timelines. Sometimes when shows go down this route, I prefer one timeline to the other, but so far I am invested in both and I am curious about how everything connects even though some parallels seem fairly obvious so far.

The Cons:

Pretty Little Liars Original Sin Spoiler Free 2

The characters need some work…

I’m not really connecting to any of the characters yet, which is slightly disappointing. I loved the characters in the original series and we have some potential here, but I think that we need to learn more about everyone. So far we are spending a lot of time on two of the potential leads of the series, but I want to get to know everyone else too so that I care about what happens to them.

The forced pop culture and movie references are also a little nauseating at times. I get that the show is trying to be relevant, but it is a bit much so far.

So am I in or out?

Pretty Little Liars Original Sin Spoiler Free 3

I’m in!

This show is really addicting and I am loving the slasher style! It’s not easy pulling off a reboot or spin-off, but so far this series is headed in the right direction and I can’t wait to watch more!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Gray Man” on Netflix: Flashy with Lots of Action

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“What’s the catch?”

The Gray Man premiered on July 22nd 2022 on Netflix. The action film stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas. It runs for a little over two hours.

A CIA Agent is hunted down by assassins after he uncovers agency secrets.

Here is the trailer:

The Gray Man is pretty much The Bourne Identity meets Mission Impossible in a lot of ways, but it does have a fantastic cast and plenty of flashy fight scenes to hold your attention. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

The Gray Man Spoiler Free 1

Images courtesy of Netflix

Dream cast!

Ryan Gosling was fantastic in this movie. He brought a cool modern day James Bond vibe to his character. I loved his sarcasm and I think he really elevated this film in a lot of ways. I’m always happy to see Ana de Armas in pretty much anything so that was a plus as well.

Chris Evans played a decent villain, although I was really distracted by his mustache.

Either way, the cast was a lot of fun to watch.

Lots of action.

If you’re looking for flashy fight scenes and tons of explosions, you’re in the right place. Netflix certainly put a lot of money into this one with all of these special effects. A lot of it was over-the-top but I liked the fight scenes, which were really fun to watch.

The Cons:

The Gray Man Spoiler Free 2

Images courtesy of Netflix

Nothing extraordinary here…

We got a fantastic cast to watch, but the story was lacking and some of the dialogue was really awful. They would have been better off saying “insert attempt at witty comeback here.”

The film was clearly inspired by the Jason Bourne films, but it never quite found its own identity in my opinion. There were glimmers here and there, but in a lot of ways, I think Netflix really phoned it in with this one. There was nothing truly inspiring or unique, which was disappointing.

Sure, it will fit your bill for a weekend watch, but it might become really forgettable after that.

So am I in or out?

The Gray Man Spoiler Free 3

I’m in about 75 percent…

This film was far from perfect, but it did highlight a fantastic cast with lots of flashy action and some entertaining moments. I would manage your expectations accordingly, however.

Spoiler-Free Review of “American Horror Stories” Season 2 Premiere on Hulu: Off to a Creepy Start!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“There’s no way out of here…”

American Horror Stories is back for season two, featuring eight anthology style episodes that will air weekly. The season premiere released on July 21st 2022. Each episode runs for approximately 42-48 minutes.

Here is the trailer:

American Horror Stories season 2 is already off to a strong and chilling start, connecting its first episode to a popular AHS season. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

American Horror Stories Spoiler Free 1

Fun and creepy premise!

The premiere episode did a great job of reeling its audience back in. Season one had some stand out anthology episodes, but a lot of others fell short in my opinion. I think that season two is already starting off a lot stronger, recognizing some of its weaknesses from its opening season.

The premiere episode was twisted and a lot of fun and I absolutely LOVED that it connected to another part of the AHS world. I think this formula works best for the anthology series and hopefully the remaining episodes will deliver as well.

A cast to be excited about!

Season two will feature some series regulars like Cody Fern and Denis O’Hare, but we will also get to see some newcomers as well, including Bella Thorne, Alicia Silverstone, and Madison Iseman. I am really excited to see what they bring to the table!

The Cons:

American Horror Stories Spoiler Free 3

A plot I’ve seen before…

While I thoroughly enjoyed the season two premiere episode, it’s a plot I’ve seen before in other films and shows. It was creepy and Denis O’Hare was on another level of disturbing, but I wanted more of an edge during some parts. There were some scenes that didn’t make sense to me, but the ending redeemed itself and brought things full circle.

I just hope that this season is a little bit more consistent with its episodes this time around, but we’re off to a solid beginning. Fingers crossed that it continues!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Nope” in Theaters: Characters to Root for!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It was fast…too fast…”

NOPE released in theaters on July 22nd 2022. The sci-fi horror film (written, directed, and produced by Jordan Peele) stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott. It runs for approximately two hours and ten minutes.

OJ and his sister, Emerald are working on their family’s horse ranch when they encounter something mysterious in the sky.

Here is the trailer:

NOPE is eerie and entertaining filled with edge-of-your-seat moments and characters that are so incredible to watch on screen. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

Best characters I have seen in a while!

I adored the brother/sister bond between OJ and Emerald. Kaluuya and Palmer were electric on screen. I was completely invested in what happened to them, which made this film that much more entertaining. Even though this is a sci-fi horror film, there is a lot of heart in it as well and the performances here were absolutely incredible.

Brandon Perea was so much fun as Angel and brought in some well placed humor.

Loved him!

A mystery that draws you in…

There was an unsettling and mysterious vibe throughout this film. It took a while to fully develop, but there were plenty of nail-biting moments sprinkled in. I was thoroughly satisfied with the ultimate reveal and I think the intensity continued to build up more and more, creating something truly immersive and spectacular to experience.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Universal Pictures

Takes a while to get going…

The first half of the film dragged a little for me. I was fine with the slow burn approach, but I personally enjoyed the second half a lot more. The pacing was a lot stronger. That being said, there were still plenty of incredible moments in the first half to enjoy.

So am I in or out?

An intense and entertaining watch worth your time!

I really enjoyed this film and I think it was unique and a lot of fun. Jordan Peele created something truly magical on screen once again!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Where the Crawdads Sing” in Theaters: Beautiful and Emotional

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“The swamp knows all about death…”

Where the Crawdads Sing released in theaters on July 15th 2022. The mystery drama film (based on the book of the same name) stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, David Strathairn, Garret Dillahunt, and Sterling Macer Jr. It runs for two hours and five minutes.

Kya grows up alone in the marshlands of North Carolina during the 50’s and 60’s after being abandoned by her family. Years later, she is accused of murdering a boy she was romantically involved with.

Here is the trailer:

Where the Crawdads Sing transports its audience into a beautiful setting with deep, dark secrets, as it weaves together a story of heartbreak, love, and deception. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment

Beautifully shot.

This movie was so gorgeous to watch. The setting was incredible and I loved the use of color. Everything was just so vivid and clear. Since the setting was such an integral part of this story, it made sense to make it stand out as the star and I think it really pulled the audience in to this secret world tucked away from the rest of society.

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment

Daisy Edgar-Jones is mesmerizing on screen.

I absolutely loved her in the film Fresh and she delivered in this film as well. This was such an eccentric and unique character and I think that her portrayal was truly moving. She captured my attention the entire time. I’m looking forward to seeing her in more films because she is very talented.

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment

A mystery that pulls you in with an ending I didn’t see coming…

I did not read the book prior to watching this film so I went into it with no real expectations. I thought the mystery was solid and the ending really threw me for a loop in the best possible way. There will be no spoilers in this review, but wow!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment

Glosses over details I wanted to know more about.

I know it’s not easy adapting a book into a film, but I thought that certain characters and timelines felt rushed. Just when I started to really connect with the young Kya story-line, we were pulled right back into the present day one.

I also wanted to know more about some of the other characters in Kya’s life (including the two love interests). I didn’t need this film to be much longer than it was, but I thought that some of these details were necessary so that we could connect with Kya’s story even more.

Even though I didn’t read the book, I would have liked to have also seen the more wild side of the swamp. Everything was just so gorgeous and serene and I’m sure that the darker parts were explored more in the novel. I’m also not really sure how Kya got such a beautiful wardrobe when she was basically a recluse, but I’ll just go with it…

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!

Beautiful, moving, and shocking in the best way possible!

I really enjoyed my watch and I definitely recommend that you give this film a chance because it has a lot going for it.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Alba” on Netflix: An Emotional, but Important Watch

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“You can’t truly live if you’re afraid…”

Alba released on Netflix on July 14th 2022. All thirteen episodes are available to stream now. The Spanish crime drama series (based on the Turkish series Fatmagül) stars Elena Rivera, Eric Masip, Pol Hermoso, Caterina Mengs, and Adriana Ozores. Each episode runs for approximately 52-60 minutes.

A young woman wakes up with no memory of the night before, only to discover that she has been raped. She later discovers that the men responsible are her boyfriend’s best friends.

Here is the trailer:

Alba tells a compelling and heartbreaking story of a woman’s search for the brutal truth as she deals with setbacks and betrayals along the way. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

A powerful story…

This series was difficult to watch because of the content, but it was also so gripping and important. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of Unbelievable and Lies and Deceit. I think it was a brilliant decision to have the show focus on Alba’s journey after the horrific event.

She had to constantly tell her story over and over again to people who doubted her, trying to prove herself in a world that was so against her at times. It made her story that much more compelling. You wanted to see her get justice for everything, but you also knew that she would never really be free from all of this, which was incredibly heartbreaking.

Images courtesy of Netflix

Elena Rivera gave an incredible performance.

She was so moving and incredible to watch on screen. My heart went out to her and every single time she reacted to something, it just felt so real. I didn’t feel like I was watching someone act in a show. It was more organic and genuine, which was important because this series focused on the aftermath of a crime that affects so many on a daily basis.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Netflix

A lot to take in…

There was a lot of emotional and sensitive content so viewers should be aware of that. I couldn’t easily binge-watch this one because it was so heavy and draining at times. I had to watch just a few episodes a day. I personally felt like the episodes were way too long and weighed down by some of the soapy fluff that was unneeded. These moments took away from the real story which was gripping enough on its own. It didn’t need all of this extra stuff and I think it severely impacted the pacing.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in about 75 percent…

Alba told an important and relevant story. The ending was satisfying and the performances were outstanding, but it definitely had some pacing issues.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Alba in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Persuasion” (2022) on Netflix: Dakota Johnson stars in this latest Jane Austen Adaptation

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I almost got married once…”

Persuasion released on July 15th 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix. The Jane Austen adaptation film stars Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding, Mia McKenna-Bruce, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-nine minutes.

After turning down a proposal from the love of her life, Anne is more than shocked when he returns years later.

Here is the trailer:

Persuasion attempts to bring a modern twist to Jane Austen’s classic, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Persuasion 2022 Spoiler Free 1

Images courtesy of Netflix

Beautiful cinematography.

This film was gorgeous to look at. The setting, the fashion, and the use of color really suited it well and channeled the time period. I almost felt like I was stepping right into a watercolor painting. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

Persuasion 2022 Spoiler Free 2

Dakota Johnson puts forth a valiant effort.

I thought she was absolutely charming as Anne and she saved this film in a lot of ways for me. She was quirky and fun to watch. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while and I thoroughly enjoyed her portrayal. In a lot of ways she had a Bridget Jones vibe going on and I think it worked in her favor to prevent this film from becoming too stale.

The Cons:

Persuasion 2022 Spoiler Free 3

Images courtesy of Netflix

The modernization of the dialogue was cringe-worthy at times…

Jane Austen has created some of the most beautiful strings of words ever. I love reading them and I love hearing them in the films and I was very disappointed when some of my favorite lines from the novel were completely distorted into empty phrases that were clearly meant to make the film seem more modern even though it was set during the original time period. This didn’t translate for me and honestly ruined some of my favorite moments from the book.

The chemistry also seemed off and awkward at times, but there were some redeeming moments here.

The film wasn’t that bad at all, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it would have honored some of the more memorable quotes from the novel for fans of the original novel. It would have felt more authentic and genuine. We don’t need to modernize everything…

So am I in or out?

Persuasion 2022 Spoiler Free 4

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in about 75 percent…

This film had its moments and Dakota Johnson really shined in this role, but the modern take on Jane Austen’s novel didn’t translate that well at times. I’m still always up for a Jane Austen adaptation, but I was just hoping for a little more here.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Resident Evil” (2022) on Netflix: Jam-packed but Entertaining!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“The world ended a long time ago…”

Resident Evil premiered on Netflix on July 14th 2022. All eight episodes are available to stream now. The action horror series (based on the popular video game franchise) stars Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, and Paola Núñez. Each episode runs for approximately 48-50 minutes.

Fourteen years after a deadly virus caused the apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights back to find a way to make a difference, revealing what happened to her father and sister back in the year 2022.

Here is the trailer:

Resident Evil brings us an intriguing story for one of the franchise’s most notorious villains while introducing us to a new timeline filled with plenty of Easter Eggs for fans of the franchise. Is this series worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Resident Evil 2022 no spoilers 1

Images courtesy of Netflix

All hail Lance Reddick!

I was already a huge fan of his. I loved him on Fringe and LOST, but wow was he fantastic as Albert Wesker. He brought so much to his character and performance and was the best part of the series for me!

There were some other standout characters as well, including young Jade and Billie. I thought both actresses did a really great job with what they were given and they were very believable as sisters.

Paola Núñez dominated in this series! I wanted her to get even more screen time because she was a scene stealer for sure!

For those of you concerned that you won’t be seeing the regular players featured in this new series, there are plenty of new characters to be excited about so don’t worry!

A layered story with plenty of reveals worth sticking around for.

I appreciated that this series actually took the time to flesh out a well layered story. We even got some character development, which was sometimes missing from the films that favored the action scenes. In a way, this show felt like a mashup between zombie teen series like The Walking Dead: World Beyond (but better) and the previous Resident Evil films.

There were some really great reveals and if you feel confused at first, most things will be explained by the time you get to the end of the series.

There were also plenty of Easter Eggs for fans. I really liked that this series payed respect to the games while creating a new world of its own in the process.

The Cons:

One timeline was a lot stronger than the other…

The series jumped back and forth between the 2022 and 2036 timelines, but I much preferred the 2022 one. I was fully invested in this timeline and every single time we jumped back to the 2036 one, it didn’t have the same impact and it interrupted the natural flow of the story.

I think this improved as the series went on and the connections to the future started to make more sense, but it severely slowed down the pacing in the earlier episodes, which was frustrating at times.

Most of the action took place in the 2036 timeline so it does have its moments, but I really enjoyed the story-line in the past a lot more.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

This series was far from perfect, but it was really entertaining and I LOVED the new characters. As long as you manage your expectations accordingly, you will find a lot to be excited about and I truly hope it gets picked up for a second season!
