Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Walking Dead” season 10 episode 2: “We Are the End of the World”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s The Walking Dead season 10 episode 2, Alpha reminded us that there are two kinds of people left in the world:  “The ones brave enough to walk with the dead and everybody else,” but what happens when you blur the line between these two extremes?  Can you still continue to believe in a vision when doubt and regret start to seep in?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.

In last night’s episode, “We Are the End of the World,” we dedicate an episode to The Whisperers, discovering how Alpha and Beta first met.  Meanwhile, we also meet Gamma, played by Hocus Pocus star, Thora Birch.  My top 5 moments from The Walking Dead season 10 episode 2 are:

5

“We’re all monsters now.”

In the beginning of the episode, we jump back to 7 years ago and witness Alpha and Lydia on the run from walkers.  They end up in a building, but quickly learn that they are not alone, as Alpha and Beta cross paths for the very first time.

Alpha and Beta instantly form some kind of twisted connection and seem to truly see each other for what they are.  We learn that Alpha used to enjoy singing and even hums Patsy Cline’s Walkin’ After Midnight, which gave me some LOST nostalgia.

4

“You’ll never understand how it feels to abandon your child.”

In present day, Beta takes two sisters out with him, but one of the sisters freaks out and starts crying, putting the pack in danger.  We learn that she is the mother of the abandoned baby that Connie rescued and it’s clear that she is still broken from this trauma.

Beta wants to make an example out of her, but Alpha decides to spare her, understanding what it feels like to lose a child.  Beta thinks that she has made a mistake and some other members of the pack begin to question everything.  Losing Lydia has taken a toll on Alpha, but is it now impacting her decisions as a leader?

3

“You gotta become them.  Feel what they feel…”

Back in the past, Alpha explains that they are in a world beyond names, but that they can still recognize each other on some primal level.  She refers to Beta as “B,” which of course makes her “A,” as our origin story continues.  Beta enjoys the sound of the dead and Alpha definitely beats to the sound of her own drum, as poor Lydia starts repeating over and over that “we’re all monsters now.”

Even though Lydia is not exactly like her mother, she doesn’t want her to ever leave her, but she is in such a vulnerable state right now and is extremely impressionable, which makes her past decisions even more understandable now.

2

“I anoint you Gamma.”

After Gamma’s sister is given a second chance, she loses it again when she sees a walker with a baby carrier and runs after it in a blind range.  Gamma makes the decision to protect Alpha over her sister, as her sister is ripped apart.  Alpha explains that Gamma has now accepted her new destiny, but is she a potential threat to Alpha?

Alpha’s better judgment has been clouded because of her own loss and it looks like Gamma is ready to take on more responsibility, which makes me wonder if an even greater threat has just risen among The Whisperers.

1

“Walk with me in the darkness.”

Beta follows Alpha and discovers that she held on to Lydia’s stuffed animal, realizing now that she wasn’t able to kill Lydia.  Alpha explains that she is still her daughter, but that the others cannot know, recognizing that it will weaken her authority and the pack.  Beta agrees to keep her secret and we also flash back to their connected past, learning how the beliefs of The Whisperers came to be.

We learn that Beta was keeping his undead best friend around with an unsettling smiley face T-shirt, but once Alpha eliminates him, she explains that Beta can still keep him with him, taking his skin for the mask that he now wears.  The two of them embrace the darkness together here and we cut to present day, as Alpha explains that she will need to teach our group a lesson for crossing the border, recognizing that she needs to do something to strengthen her pack before anything else unravels.

Alpha is looking to punish our group, but will she truly be able to bury her own mixed emotions about her daughter?  Stay tuned!

Overall, I thought this was an important and revealing origin story that truly allowed us to see things from Alpha’s perspective.  Even though she is considered a villain, it really made me think about Michonne’s discussion last week about good guys and bad guys.  It looks like everyone is blurring the line now between right and wrong, but is there still a chance to find some middle ground before it’s too late?

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Fear the Walking Dead” season 5 episode 4: “Ready, Skidmark?”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 4, I realized that sometimes you can find a friend in the most unlikely places.  It may seem like being alone is the answer, but we all need a friend every now and again.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Skidmark,” we learn more about Daniel and our new favorite character, Skidmark.  Meanwhile, Alicia begins to worry that Dylan may not be telling the truth, Max and Annie wind up in a dangerous situation, and Victor tries to make amends.  My top 5 moments from Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 4 are:

5

“Ready, Skidmark?”

I absolutely adore Daniel’s cat, Skidmark, and it was fun to witness the effective tag team of Daniel, or “Dan the Man,” as Sarah has now hilariously nicknamed him and his trusty cat, Skidmark.  Daniel puts a bell on Skidmark’s collar to distract the walkers, while he takes them out and begins disarming traps that are set up.  Skidmark is quite agile and is able to evade the hungry walkers, proving to be quite useful.  We learn that Daniel inherited the warehouse from whoever set the traps in the first place and he has been working on disarming them all.  Daniel is used to spending his time alone and enjoys a quick meal with Skidmark, but is he ready to be around others again?

“What’s it about…the book?  How can it help?”

Meanwhile, Dylan bonds with Luciana after Alicia and Morgan go out to investigate a camp that Dylan has supposedly seen.  The Little Prince makes an appearance again, as Dylan becomes curious about the story.  Luciana fills him in and these two bond over it.  Dylan helps Luciana fix the tower and eventually comes clean about lying.  He tells the group that he was scared, but it looks like Dylan’s heart is in the right place.  Dylan is even inspired enough by the story of The Little Prince to give Luciana a good idea as well about fixing the plane.  I thought this moment was sweet between these two, as Luciana helped Charlie previously with the book and it seems like she really has a knack for motherhood.

3

“I’m not gonna shoot you in the face…”

During the episode, Daniel and Victor continue to clash, as Daniel does not trust him and refuses to just hand over the plane.  Daniel claims that he is going to “save” Charlie, who he discovers hiding in the back of his truck, but Victor continues to try and prove that he has changed.  He tells the group about Ofelia and how he lied to Daniel to get something he needed.  When Daniel finally discovered the truth about Ofelia, it was too late and he wasn’t able to tell her what he needed to.

Later on, Charlie and Daniel get in a jam and Victor, Sarah, and Wendell come to their rescue.  Victor uses the plane to take out the herd of walkers in a gruesome way, but he saves Daniel, sacrificing the plane in the process.  Daniel recognizes that Victor is truly making an effort here, admitting his past mistakes and trying to make a difference now and tells him, “I’m not gonna shot you in the face,” which I guess is progress for these two.

Either way, I thought this was an important moment for both characters, as Victor finally takes some action rather than just talking about how he wants to do the right thing.  He may never be able to make up for what he did before, but that doesn’t mean he can’t change.  It was also fun to see some screen time for Sarah and Wendell here, who broke up the tension with some laughs as well.  I thoroughly enjoy both characters and hope we get some more screen time for them soon!

2

“What were you going to tell her?”

During the episode, Charlie forms a friendship with Daniel.  They bond over artichoke hearts and music…oh yeah and taking out walkers too!  Perhaps Charlie sees a lot of herself in Daniel, understanding what it means to be alone after you have lost someone you have truly cared for.  These two form a quick friendship and Charlie later asks Daniel what he wanted to tell Ofelia before she died.  Daniel confides in Charlie and tells her:  “That every day brings a chance to start over…a chance to get it right.”  Daniel recognizes that perhaps Charlie needed to hear this too.  Even though Ofelia is gone, Daniel is finally able to say these words out loud and he essentially helps another girl with them in the process.

Daniel asks Charlie to look after Skidmark, as he heads off to do some more work or soul searching perhaps, but it looks like Charlie got through to him and I thought this was a heartwarming moment for both characters.  Will we see Daniel again?  Let’s hope so, since there is a cigar waiting for him, but I’m super happy that Skidmark is now officially part of the group!

“What the hell is that?”

This was a jam-packed episode, as Max and Annie also find themselves in a dangerous situation, when Annie hurts her leg and a group of walkers closes in on them.  They had spotted a man in a black suit and helmet who had been taking down one of their barricades of walkers.  Luckily, our favorite dynamic duo, Alicia and Morgan, are there to save the day, but they quickly learn that these kids are not alone, as a group of children surround them, all holding weapons.  Alicia and Morgan realize that the camp is where their parents were and now they are all left alone.  Morgan explains that they can help each other and it looks like the kids are ready for a truce.

Before we can learn too much more, the kids tell them to get down and we see the helicopter with the 3 ringed symbol that picked up Rick and Anne/Jadis in The Walking DeadSo we are now presented with another interesting crossover.  I was very curious about the meaning behind “A” and “B” in TWD and I’m wondering if this will now be explored on Fear TWD.  What else will we discover?  We’ll have to wait and see, but it also looks like we will finally catch up with Al next week and I’m excited about that. Stay tuned!
