Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Purge” season 1 episode 7: “Because Fear is Alive”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the USA network’s The Purge season 1 episode 7 last night, the voice over reminded us that “The Purge is your chance to rise up.  To stand tall.  Reclaim your power.  We’ll all rise up together and march hand and hand to victory.”  Even when you think it may be over on Purge Night, that doesn’t mean that you give you for one second.  There is still plenty of time to reclaim your own power and to fight back.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Lovely Dark and Deep,” Miguel and Penelope escape through the woods, but run into new threats along the way.  Meanwhile, Jane is put on display and Jenna has a Lady Macbeth moment.  “Out damned spot!”  My top 5 moments from The Purge season 1 episode 7 are:

5

“Your looks are an asset.”

David takes things to the next level when he adds Jane to his live art gallery, putting her on display for everyone to see.  Jane tells him that he is disgusting and David reminds her to “hang tight,” pun intended.  During this time, Jane flashes back to her past and remembers her mother talking to her about her looks being an asset, encouraging Jane to enter into beauty pageants to potentially win a scholarship.  Jane has always wanted to prove that she can succeed based on her intelligence, rather than her looks, but her mother tells her to “sparkle baby.”  Jane has also always wanted to change the perception of others in the world, but reality has reminded her that this is not always possible.  Jane spots Anya at the party and begs her to help her.  Anya discreetly speaks to Jane and tells her that they did this to her last year, trying to calm her down.  Jane is horrified that Anya said nothing and let this happen and asks for her to call the Matron Saints.  Even though Anya is not a part of this twisted game, sometimes saying nothing is just as bad as actively participating.   Will Anya make the right decision?

4

“She’s very convincing when she needs to be.”

Jenna and Rick agree to let Lila into their home, who is absolutely traumatized.  Jenna tries to console her and tells her, “You’re OK.”  Rick later pulls Jenna aside and explains that Lila’s story keeps changing and that this doesn’t add up.  Jenna doesn’t want to hear this; however, as she is very concerned with Lila’s well-being and just wants to be there for her.  Is Jenna blinded by love?  Is Lila hiding something?  We’ll have to stay tuned to find out, but I think Rick is on to something here.

3

“You’re the most important person in the world to me.”

Miguel and Penelope are not getting that pancake break anytime soon, as they make their way into the woods to escape the “Carnival of Flesh.”  They take a moment to finally talk and Penelope asks Miguel how many people he killed tonight.  Miguel explains that he did what he had to do, but Penelope says that she was ready to die.  The woods are anything but “lovely,” as they witness a man being set on fire and try to make their way out undetected.  Penelope gets stuck in a trap and Miguel puts his Marine skills to the test once again to free her.  Later on, Penelope tells Miguel that she is glad that he came back for her.  Finally!  It looks like the immediate threat is over for these two, but something tells me that Penelope will want to go back and face her cult leader.  Is she ready though?

2

“You saved us.”

While tensions continue to build at Rick and Jenna’s home, they realize that their neighbor, Ross, has gotten inside.  Ross is pissed off about their lack of “neighborly courtesy” and is ready to purge.  You might want to start taking in your garbage cans on time from now on.  Rick and Jenna try to talk Ross out of this and even let him know that they will put something on the books right away so that they can all get to know each other.  Ross is not buying it; however, and tries to attack Jenna.  Lila steps in with perfect timing and brutally stabs Ross, ending the threat.  Go Lila!  Lila is still shaken up after she witnessed her father’s death; however, and reveals to Rick and Jenna, “I just ran when it came to saving my own family.  I didn’t even try.”  Jenna reminds her that she saved them and is extremely grateful.  Jenna is ready to move once this is all over; however, desperately trying to clean the blood out of the floor, which was supposed to be where the nursery would go.  So much for that.  Jenna tells Lila that she can stay there for as long as she needs and embraces her hand in a touching moment.  Rick witnesses this; however, and I’m starting to think that he may be on to something.  As much as I am rooting for Jelinna, there is something not quite right about all of this.  We’ll have to stay tuned to find out what Lila is hiding.

1

“There’s nothing left to say David.”

David continues to play the villain perfectly, as he talks to Jane about capturing the live fear in her eyes.  Jane is horrified by his actions, but the tables are about to finally turn.  The lights all go out and in walks the masked vigilante, Joe, who is there to save Jane and the other women.  Jane tries to help the other women there and tells Anya to help as well, as Anya finally listens and makes the right decision.  Girl power and all that.  Jane picks up the gun and the moment we have been waiting for is finally here.  Without any hesitation, she shoots David in the head and takes off with Joe.  Joe tells her that they will go somewhere safe, but I have to say that I am extremely proud of Jane.  David could not be redeemed and Jane reclaimed her power, refusing to become someone weak like David initially suggested.  While Jane is a good person and against everything this night stands for, she had no choice here.  If she didn’t eliminate David, he would have come after her.  Either way, Jane finally stepped up and Joe has now crossed paths with the first of our main characters.  I’m looking forward to see who he helps next.  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Purge below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

When Kallie Bennett, a jaded teenage girl plagued by her alcoholic mother and her peers molded out of sheer bubble gum perfection, chases after Alice in Wonderland herself, she ends up lost in her own version of Wonderland, which forces her to face her utmost fears and introduces her to familiar characters with a dark twist. Among these characters is Ches, a gorgeous vampire with a conflicted conscience, who becomes Kallie’s guide and blossoming love interest. She also crosses paths with Queen Hartley, a manipulative witch who has the power to strip away one’s memories and imagination, which brings a bone chilling new meaning to “off with their heads.” In The Search for Alice, Kallie starts to realize that her Wonderland is just as frightening as her own reality and that she cannot always run away from her problems. She must figure out a way to defeat Queen Hartley and return home before it is too late, but she soon learns that escaping Wonderland means leaving Ches behind forever.

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Purge” season 1 episode 6: “A Goddamn Life Saver Man”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the USA network’s The Purge season 1 episode 6 last night, the voice over reminded us that “we’re all products of our environment, our upbringing, our history.  But the only way to understand who you are is to recognize where you came from.  That’s how you’ll know what you’re capable of becoming.”  While understanding where you come from is important, that doesn’t mean that it completely defines you.  While it may shape who you are today, it’s up to you to decide if that’s who you want to be tomorrow.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Forgotten,” Henry is excited to have two victims to purge, but Miguel is not about to go out without a fight.  Meanwhile, Jane finally makes it inside David’s home, Jenna has a disturbing phone call, and we finally get to learn more about the man behind the mask.  My top 5 moments from The Purge season 1 episode 6 are:

5

“A goddamn life saver man.  That’s what you are.”

Meet Joe, the man behind the mask.  In this episode, we finally get a glimpse into his past and learn that Joe was actually quite the average Joe prior to this Purge Night.  He was a welder who worked hard and supported his team and family.  There doesn’t seem to be anything too special about him, but circumstances quickly change when he loses his job suddenly and is faced with a reality of not being able to provide for himself and his family.  We finally learn that the voice over comes from a TV channel that Joe switched to after skipping through tons of channels discussing poverty and declining changes in the stock market.  Joe is frustrated and when he hears the voice over, it’s like it is speaking to him directly, almost like a calling.  While we don’t get to see the man behind the voice on the television screen, we know that the voice over is interested in talking about society and encouraging others to purge.  While Joe may have initially gone through with a purge, we know that he is rising up against people who are purging tonight.  After Joe saves a group of men from their attackers, one of the men hilariously tells him that he’s like one of those candies; you know a life saver man and I have to admit that it’s pretty catchy.  While we have finally learned more about Joe, I am interested in finding out how his story and actions will connect to the other characters we have come to know.

4

“All that matters is who you are and who you’re with.”

Jenna and Rick have a close call with some eager Purgers, but are able to make it home OK.  Rick tells Jenna that the threat is over, but she knows that it is not.  Rick is jealous and upset with Jenna for going after Lila, but Jenna tries to explain that “I wanted to make sure you were both safe.”  Whether this is entirely true or not, Jenna has a big heart and clearly cares for both of them.  She tells Rick that she is no longer in love with Lila, but her actions say otherwise.  Jenna has a real conversation with Rick and explains that she saw his face and knew that tonight was all about him.  Rick tries to remind her about where he came from and how he wants their baby to have a good life and to be raised right.  Whether he has good intentions or not, Rick is turning into someone that scares Jenna and she just wants Rick to go back to being a good man.  However, I’m not sure that these two can just turn back time so easily; especially because we know that they were not happy before Lila.  Sometimes loving someone is not merely enough, but are Jenna and Rick willing to do what it takes to make things work for their family?

3

“Do whatever you want to me, but she doesn’t deserve this.”

Miguel continues to do what is right, even when he is tied up across from his sister.  Henry is excited to get the chance to take his revenge out on Miguel and purge both of them.  Penelope seems to be giving up again after she was so strong in last week’s episode, but Miguel reminds her that they are going to walk out of there together and there is something about his words that are so convincing and comforting.  Henry makes a comment to Miguel about how hindsight is 20/20 and Miguel takes this opportunity to say, “More like 10/10.”  Henry is definitely not amused and is ready to take Miguel’s eye as well, but Miguel turns the tables on him.  Miguel proves again to be worthy of the bad-ass title and eliminates Henry as a threat once and for all.  So long Henry.  Can’t say it was nice seeing you.  Miguel frees Penelope, but the threat is nowhere near over as they now need to make it out of the “Carnival of Flesh” undetected, which is easier said than done.  We know the man in the cowboy hat is out for revenge, but Miguel is ready to do what is necessary to protect his sister.  What’s next for these two?  We’ll have to wait to find out, but I pretty much trust Miguel with my life now.  I’d love to see a partnership between Miguel and Leo from The Purge movies.  I have a feeling that no one would be able to stop them and the NFFA would be running away screaming.

2

“Men were men and women were not.”

After Jane makes it to David’s home, she reveals to him that she initially hired someone to kill him, but knows that this was wrong and is ready to help protect him.  Jane quickly realizes that David may not need any protecting, especially when she gets a look at his advanced security system.  David seems to be a little bit too understanding of Jane’s actions and tells her that he wants to show her his collection since she is an art fan as well.  When they get to the elevator, Jane has second thoughts and wants to get out of there.  When she tries to find a way out, she discovers the body of the woman she hired to kill David.  Jane is horrified and is taken down to David’s disturbing gallery, which he describes as “a living breathing art gallery.”  Live women are tied up and on display, but David explains that if the women behave, they can go home unharmed and that there are rules.  But what happens when they don’t behave?  David proves to be quite the misogynist and starts talking about the days when “men were men and women were not.”  Jane is disgusted by what she sees and tells him that he is a pig.  She further tells David that she shouldn’t have called off the hit and David says, “And that’s what makes you weak.”  Before she can react, Jane is taken away by his guards, but I’m hoping that Jane can prove David wrong and show him just how strong she really is.  We know that Jane still has the card of the Matron Saints and this seems like the perfect opportunity for them to remind these men that women have rights too and that this is not OK on any level.  I’m anxiously waiting for Jane to rise up and turn the tables on David once and for all.

1

“She’s dead.”

When Jenna is finally alone, she continues to try and call Lila, desperate to hear her voice on the other end.  Jenna is shocked when a male voice answers and simply says, “She’s dead.”  Jenna is beyond heartbroken and is completely devastated to learn that Lila is gone.  Fear not Jelinna fans, as a knock at the door reveals that Lila is still alive, but she is badly hurt and completely frightened, begging for Jenna and Rick to let her in.  While I am very happy to see that Lila is OK, we know that there are consequences to letting someone in during Purge Night.  Remember the first film?  What will happen now that these three are trapped together under the same roof?  What other threats will come their way?  I’m not certain, but I can definitely see Jenna being forced to make a hard choice between Rick and Lila, but will she make the right one?  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Purge below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Purge” season 1 episode 5: “You can’t Break Me because I’m Stronger than You”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the USA network’s The Purge season 1 episode 5 last night, the voice over reminded us that “if you see something, do something, because a storm is coming.”  Well the storm has definitely arrived for some of our favorite characters and it’s not about to let up anytime soon.  The decisions made on Purge Night can change lives forever, but who will you ultimately decide to be?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Rise Up,” Penelope comes face to face with her dangerous ex-boyfriend, Henry, and we learn more about their jaded past.  Meanwhile, Catalina tries to warn Jenna to find Rick and get to the cellar before it’s too late, Jane continues to accompany the Matron Saints, and Miguel points his moral compass in the right direction.  My top 5 moments from The Purge season 1 episode 5 are:

5

“Be a hero.  Step up.”

At the end of last week’s episode, we finally got a glimpse of the man in the mask who has been going around on Purge Night as a vigilante, accompanied by the voice over.  While I’m not sure if they are one in the same or connected somehow, this man could be the key to changing everything.  At the end of this episode, the man approaches a group of men who are attacking someone, ready to step up and be a hero, but I am still anxiously waiting for his story to unravel.  Is he somehow the key to saving the other characters we have met or is there another connection here?  We’ll have to wait and see, but there is something to be said about the voice over’s final words:  “Become the person tonight that you want to be tomorrow.”  I think this can apply to every one of the characters, but they have to discover who they are on their own.  Whether they make the right or wrong decisions, only they can determine who they are and who they can still become.

4

“We’re all survivors here.  Including you.”

Jane continues to travel with the Matron Saints, but begins panicking that she will not be able to reach David in time.  The Matron Saints teasingly ask Jane if this is a “Purge Night booty call,” and further explain that Purge Night has the second highest conception rate after New Year’s Eve.  I guess who needs romance when the Purge is in the air.  Jane witnesses the Matron Saints save a woman from being beaten by her husband and the woman is thankful for their help.  Jane is shocked when the Matron Saints decide to brand this man with “Pig” on his forehead.  Jane tries to get them to stop and explains that they will regret this, but they explain that it is necessary.  Jane can’t handle watching this and ends up leaving, desperate to get to David in time.  One of the Matron Saints gives her a card so she can contact them if she needs help and something tells me that Jane might change her tune after she finally meets up with David.  While I appreciate Jane trying to do the right thing here, not everyone is ready to listen to their conscience just yet and I have a feeling that David has something up his sleeve.  Watch out Jane!

3

“Do not ever turn on someone who just saved your ass.”

Well said Miguel.  Well said.  At the end of last week’s episode, Miguel learned that his new cowboy friend was transporting victims to the “Carnival of Flesh.”  Miguel has a big decision to make, but he makes the right one and helps the victims, betraying the man in the cowboy hat.  We learn that the victims are the man’s landlady and son and he was tired of her raising his rent.  While I can definitely understand and appreciate that complaint, I’m not sure it warrants a delivery to the “Carnival of Flesh.”  Miguel is shocked when the landlady’s son turns a gun on him and he shows off his skills by taking back the gun with barely any effort.  Seriously Miguel is bad-ass!  Miguel is finally reunited with his sister, Penelope, but it’s not on the best of terms.  Security finds him after the man in the cowboy hat alerts them of the breach and Henry is ready to “pay to play,” no matter what the cost is, seeking revenge on Miguel.  An eye for an eye so to speak.  Sorry I couldn’t resist.  How is Miguel going to get out of this one?  I’m not so sure, but I am rooting for him no matter what.

2

“Sometimes revolution is the only way to make the world a better place.”

The Stanton’s maid, Catalina, warns Jenna to find Rick and get to the cellar.  Jenna tries to get some more information from her, but Catalina is very cryptic here, only telling her that she is in danger.  Jenna tries to knock on Lila’s door, but no one answers.  Rick goes off to find Jenna and all hell breaks loose.  Jenna spots men with guns approaching the Stanton house and they quickly realize that they are all about to be brutally attacked and killed.  We know from The Purge films that many revolutionary groups have tried to take down the NFFA, but Jenna and Rick are innocent here.  Jenna tries to get Lila, but Rick tells her they have to go and they make it to the cellar.  The door is locked and Catalina meets them there and we learn that she is part of the revolution.  Catalina recognizes that Jenna and Rick are innocent and tells them how to get to safety.  Jenna panics and asks about Lila, but Catalina explains that “no Stanton is safe.”  Will Lila be all right?  Will Jenna go back for her?  Things have escalated at the Stanton house and Jenna will need to make a much bigger decision than whether to choose Team Rick or Team Lila romantically.  While I am definitely shipping “Jelinna,” Lila may be out of luck, but let’s hope that she can find a way out.

1

“You can’t break me because I am stronger than you are.”

In this episode, we get a flashback to Penelope and Henry’s past and start to completely understand why she is not so pleased to see her ex-boyfriend on Purge Night.  Henry seems completely deranged and is thrilled to have found her.  Henry initially tells Penelope that he has so much to tell her and seems to want her back in some way, but Penelope refuses to give in, telling Henry exactly what she thinks of him.  In the flashback, we learn that Henry was responsible for Penelope’s drug addiction and that he even got violent with her when she tried to walk away from the relationship.  Miguel and Henry had a huge fight and Miguel is responsible for the awful injury to Henry’s eye.  Flash forward to present day and Henry tells Penelope that he feels betrayed by her and that she broke him.  Penelope stays strong; however and tells Henry, “You were already broken.  I’m done being scared.”  She also sheds some real light on Purge Night and explains that Henry thinks that Purge Night will solve all his problems, but it won’t.  It will just make everything worse and she is absolutely right.  This is the first time I have seen Penelope really stand up for herself and find her inner strength and it’s about time.  Up until this point, Penelope has been a lost and naive soul, dependent on others.  She is no longer broken now.  She has become a force to be reckoned with and I have a feeling that Penelope may end up saving Miguel in the end.  Jessica Garza was absolutely brilliant in this episode and she has really sparked a fire in her character that no one will be able to put out.  Henry better watch out.  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Purge below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Purge” season 1 episode 4: “You’re the Only Reason I’m Here”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the USA network’s The Purge season 1 episode 4 last night, the voice over reminded us that “humans have been the most vicious animals all along.  Man invented fire, man invented weapons, man invented purge.”  The voice over further explained that “man wasn’t designed to be polite.  Man was designed to survive.”  While we know that our need to survive is always present, that doesn’t mean that we need to “release the beast.”  There is always a balance for everything and we just have to remember that.  However, this is sometimes easier said than done on Purge Night.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Release the Beast,” Miguel continues to try and find Penelope, who has now been taken to the “Carnival of Flesh.”  Meanwhile, we learn more about Jenna, Lila, and Rick’s past together and Jane tries to cancel her order, but runs into some trouble along the way.  My top 5 moments from The Purge season 1 episode 4 are:

5

“I changed my mind.”

After Alison brutally murders her co-worker, Mark, Jane is beyond upset.  Even Alison panics and says that she feels worse than before and worries that Jane is going to tell her parents.  Priorities right?  After witnessing this, Jane has second thoughts about what she has put into motion and tries to call it off.  She realizes that David doesn’t deserve this fate and makes a call to cancel her order.  Jane only gets a voicemail and realizes that she will need to go outside to find David and save him before it’s too late.  She also makes a call and tries to get a message to her mother, stressing that she forgives her.  But what does she forgive her for?  Jane grabs a hammer and heads outside, but is attacked and drugged on the way.  Luckily for Jane, she is rescued by the “Matron Saints.”  They are a group of women who teach other women about self defense, safety on Purge Night, and rescue women on the actual night.  They explain that they just want to level the playing field, as many women are sexually assaulted and attacked on Purge Night.  Jane still has to make it to David, but it looks like she will be along for the ride for at least a little while longer.  Will she be able to stop her Purge order before it’s too late?

4

“Man was designed to survive.”

For the past few episodes, we have heard the voice over of an unidentified man who also wears a mask and eliminates threats on Purge Night.  At the end of this episode, he finally takes his mask off and we meet a new player who is upset to find more victims of the Purge.  While we don’t know much about him or whether he is really a friend or foe, he seems to be some kind of Purge Vigilante.  Either way, the mask has been removed and hopefully we will get some more information on him next week.

3

“It’s like the McDonald’s of Purge.  Super Sizing killing…”

During the episode, we learn that Penelope has been taken to the “Carnival of Flesh,” which is “a celebration of killing through the ages.”  Seriously The Purge is corrupting everything I enjoy.  First fun houses and now carnivals.  What’s next?  The carnival is filled with paying customers who are ready to sport their new “Urge to Purge” tee shirts and experience “purging” like their ancestors.  There is a section for “witch trials” and the “fall of Saigon,” giving customers a plethora of options.  Penelope gets a wake-up call and is shocked by the behavior of these people.  She tries to help an old man who is pushed to the ground and mistakes her for his granddaughter.  Penelope tries to stay strong when she is taken on stage to be auctioned off as a “martyr” of sorts, but it’s clear that she is getting a whole new perspective on what humanity is capable of.  Penelope is auctioned off for two thousand dollars and we quickly learn that Henry from her past is responsible for the winning bid.  Penelope is terrified to see him and we know that they had some kind of past relationship that did not end well.  While we still have a lot to find about him, Henry is clearly twisted and disturbed.  He seems to have some kind of obsession with Penelope and I am definitely worried about her safety.  Come on Miguel!  Your sister needs you.

2

“It’s above your pay grade kid.”

Miguel looks for the help of Pete the Cop once again and asks him about “The Nuns” who took his sister.  Pete is hesitant to help him at first, but further explains that helping Miguel prevents him from becoming completely numb on Purge Night.  He refers Miguel to a man in a cowboy hat who can take him where he needs to go.  The man in the cowboy hat initially seems to be a good guy, but everyone has some kind of darkness inside them.  On the way to the Carnival, the man gives Miguel some life lessons.  Life lesson number one:  “When someone is helping, you don’t interrupt.”  Life lesson number two:  “Stop living in the past.”  Life lesson number three:  “Living your dream don’t come cheap.”  The man in the cowboy hat perhaps missed his calling as a life coach, but Miguel soon learns that he is a “collector.”  He is transporting a victim to the Carnival when he gives Miguel a ride.  Miguel tries to do what is right all the time, but will he sit by and let this happen so that he can get to his sister in time?  We’re about to see if Miguel’s moral compass can be truly corrupted.

“You’re the only reason I’m here.”

In this episode, we finally get a more detailed flashback to Jenna, Lila, and Rick’s past.  We learn that Jenna and Rick’s encounter with Lila was not a one time thing and they both made an agreement to only be with her together, otherwise it would be considered cheating.  Seems reasonable enough.  Only Jenna begins to fall for Lila and continues an affair with her.  Rick walks in on them and is beyond devastated.  He asks Jenna how he can trust her now and Jenna promises never to see Lila again.  Flash forward to the present and we see that Jenna is definitely having second thoughts about this promise now that Lila has returned.  We also get to learn a little bit more about Lila who explains that “I’ve been closing my eyes and covering my ears at these things since before I can remember.”  Lila has been rebelling against her family by trying to help others.  She also recognizes that Jenna and her are not like everyone else and are the exceptions.  Lila does plant a seed; however, and tells Jenna that she fears that Rick may be more interested in the money.  She even tells Jenna that she would be willing to raise the baby with her and asks Jenna to really think this over.  Jenna is definitely at a literal crossroads when an announcement is made about the festivities beginning.  She looks over at Lila walking up the staircase and Rick who is motioning her over to him.  Before Jenna can make a decision, the maid approaches her and tells her that she has to get out of the house now.  While we can only imagine what will take place next on Purge Night, it makes me wonder why Jenna is singled out here.  Either way, Jenna has a lot on her plate and has a big decision to make.  I am definitely on Team Lila for sure, but something tells me that Rick will not give up so easily.  Stay tuned!

I am so excited to announce that my book, The Search for Alice, is now available!  If you enjoy fairy-tale retellings, paranormal romance, horror, and mystery, then this might be the book for you or someone you know!  Thank you for taking the time to check it out and I appreciate any feedback as well.  I hope you enjoy!
