Spoiler-Free Review of “Slanted” on Demand: The Substance meets Mean Girls

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Everyone is going to love you…”

Slanted released in limited theaters on March 13th 2026 and is now available to watch on Demand as of April 14th 2026. The body horror-comedy film stars Shirley Chen, Mckenna Grace, Amelie Zilber, Nicholas Myers, Vivian Wu, and Fang Du. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

A Chinese-American teenager struggles to fit in with her white peers and is offered an opportunity to undergo a new treatment that promises to change her race and appearance so that she can fulfill her dream of becoming prom queen, but it comes with unwelcomed side effects.

Here is the trailer:

Slanted is a watered down mix of The Substance and Grafted with a few shocking moments of its own. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

A disturbing premise with a Mean Girls vibe.

It’s becoming more and more common to see horror movies dipping into the girly pop side of things, borrowing from films like Mean Girls. Recently Forbidden Fruits really reminded me how much I love movies that fit into this genre, and I think Slanted put forth a valiant effort here.

This film had some important messages and themes in it, but it also leaned into some unserious moments as well, which prevented things from becoming too stale. That salad scene was hilarious.

Dials it back on the body horror.

I personally appreciated this because I’m not a big fan of body horror that makes my stomach turn. I know some fans love it though! There were some moments in this that made my skin crawl, but I was able to sit through it all without wanting to throw up.

The Cons:

A film I’ve seen before.

Don’t get me wrong…I did enjoy this one, but it did seem very similar to other films. I think that Grafted was a lot stronger and more people should check out that film!

The ending was satisfying enough for me, but I guess I was expecting something a little bit bigger or bolder to happen.

I also thought the themes and messages were a little obvious.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

SLANTED is an entertaining film that fits nicely into the girly horror genre with some disturbing moments sprinkled in.

The Pros:

Each episode feels like a mini movie!

I mean this in the best possible way. I honestly lost track of time watching the first three episodes. Each one had a very different feel to it, but they each hooked me in such a compelling way. I am even more invested this time around than I was in season one after that major reveal. Now, I can sit back and appreciate everything happening around me and it’s leading to more questions that I’m desperate to find out the answers to!

So far the pacing is on point and this show is doing a very good job of reeling us in, exploring a whole new world we only had glimpses at before.

Welcomed newcomers!

I could watch Sterling K. Brown scour the earth and be content because he is such a remarkable and capable actor. Having said that, it was really nice and refreshing to have some new faces in this, including the wonderful and brilliant Shailene Woodley. I am a big fan of her work and she is already drawing me in so much with her character. I’m anxious to find out more and looking forward to more character connections.

The Cons:

Less interested in the world of Paradise now…

Don’t get me wrong…it’s still really riveting and we certainly have a lot of moving pieces right now to keep us busy. However, I am a little bit more interested in what’s going on above ground so I don’t want to bounce around too much during the episodes. I found myself slightly underwhelmed with episode three, but the first two episodes were very strong. I just hope we have enough time to cover everything because we have a lot going on in season two.

So am I in or out?

Paradise season 2 manages to remain compelling and unique with its story-telling, taking us on an intense roller coaster ride filled with plenty of twists and turns.

I can’t wait to watch the rest of the episodes!

The Pros:

Characters to root for!

This film would not work without this key component. As the audience, when you understand the stakes of a movie like this, you have to think about whether you are invested or not in the outcome. Well, I can report that I was absolutely invested here. The characters were all exceptional and the performances were truly moving and fantastic.

David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) was the BEST part of the film, giving us such a thought-provoking and superb performance. Wow…I’m still thinking about it!

Draws you in completely.

Honestly, I felt like I was in this movie. Time seemed to stand still and the only thing in existence was this never-ending road filled with unlikely friendships, impossible odds, and shocking moments, leading up to a jaw-dropping conclusion. This film reminded me why I fell in love with movies in the first place.

The Cons:

Really depressing at times…

I don’t really have many cons for this film because I thought it was incredible. However, it did feature some heavy, gross, and difficult content to watch at times. It’s not a film you can experience lightly. You will be sucked in and invested in what happens and it will make you think about a lot, but that’s sort of the point. Just be aware that there are some disgusting and bleak moments here.

So am I in or out?

I’m in 100 percent!

The Long Walk is an emotional, brutal, and consuming watch from start to finish.

This film is truly something special!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Paradise” on Hulu: A Twisty Thriller Worth Your Time!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“It’s the not knowing…”

Paradise premiered on Hulu on January 26th 2025. There are eight episodes in total that air weekly. The season finale will air on March 4th 2025. The political thriller series stars Sterling K. Brown, James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Jon Beavers, and Krys Marshall. Each episode runs for approximately 48-56 minutes.

Secret Service agent, Xavier Collins has his life turned upside down when he discovers that one of the most powerful figures has been murdered, leading him to uncover a dangerous web of lies.

Here is the trailer:

Paradise is an engrossing watch featuring a layered whodunnit mystery that will keep you guessing. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Plenty of twists and turns.

At first glance, this series didn’t really seem like it was for me. I’ve seen my fair share of political conspiracy thrillers so I didn’t initially add this to my watch-list. However, I did notice a buzz around this show and after a few recommendations from people I trust, I decided to give it a whirl.

It definitely shattered my initial impression and branched out into something truly intriguing. Each reveal and twist was executed brilliantly, leading up to some very intense episodes that kept me on the edge of my seat. There have been a lot of risks in this series so far, but I think they are paying off.

Strong cast.

Sterling K. Brown never disappoints and has done an exceptional job leading this cast. I always love seeing James Marsden and it was a pleasant surprise seeing Sarah Shahi in this from Person of Interest. Overall, there is a lot of talent in this cast and some characters worth rooting for, which made me invest that much more in my watch.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Hulu

Takes a little while to get going…

Even with the twist in the opening episode, I thought that episodes 1-3 were a little slow. The episodes are all on the longer side and there is a lot of fluff to deal with. I was actually thinking of tuning out, but I am happy to report that episodes 4-7 were exceptional. The pacing improved and the reveals continued to build and build, leading up to a jaw-dropping episode 7, which left me with a lot more questions for the season finale. I’m really hoping that it delivers!

I’ve also seen this type of show before. The content isn’t anything new, but I have to say that the execution of it helps it stand out. Some of the twists have been a little predictable and cheesy, but it still kept things entertaining so I’m not complaining too much here.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

Paradise is a captivating watch with a fresh approach, making this a unique entry to the political thriller genre with plenty of shocking moments that will keep you guessing.

This has been an unexpected roller coaster ride so far and I’m anxious to see if it can stick the landing! I’m confident it will.
