Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Walking Dead” season 9 episode 13: “I’ll Kill Him First”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13, I realized that negotiations during the zombie apocalypse are not always that difficult.  If at first you don’t succeed with offers of trade and safe passage, why not try again with a movie?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet. In last night’s episode, “Chokepoint,” Ezekiel and Carol receive a letter from the group with the mysterious symbol.  Meanwhile, Daryl and Connie continue to make an amazing tag team, as Beta shows off just how dangerous he can be.  My top 5 moments from The Walking Dead season 9 episode 13 are:

5

“There’s no way in hell I’m letting you run away with this one.”

After Daryl gets Henry and Lydia to temporary safety, Daryl tells Lydia to go back to the Whisperers, but Henry wants to keep running and thinks that he can fix everything.  Daryl is worried about Hilltop, recognizing that Alpha will go after them first.  Henry continues to think with his heart before his head and Daryl reminds him to think about his mother.  I’m still excited to see Carol’s reaction to all of this, as I don’t think Lydia will get embraced by her with open arms.

4

“If they don’t listen, then kill them.”

Jerry and some of the others are robbed by the new group with the symbol and they give him a letter.  Ezekiel and Carol read the letter, as we are introduced to the Highwaymen.  Carol points out that they could have killed Jerry, but they sent a letter instead and it was grammatically correct, which suggests that these people are civilized.  Never underestimate the power of good grammar!  Ezekiel still wants to gather the troops just in case, but Carol continues to show off her impressive leadership skills, as she thinks that they should try talking to them first.  Either way, I was excited that the group behind the symbol has already been revealed, as TWD can sometimes drag out story-lines.

3

“Because I care about you.”

Henry continues to be Henry in this episode, as Lydia tells him that coming after her was a stupid thing to do.  Go Lydia!  Lydia demands to know why Henry came after her and he tells her that he cares about her.  Just as we are about to get another nauseating kiss between these two, Daryl interrupts and cock blocks Henry, which had me laughing uncontrollably.  Sorry Henry, maybe next time.

2

“And Jerry would like his sword back.”

So, as we got to meet the Highwaymen, I almost felt like the channel changed to an old Western movie, complete with the music soundtrack and everything.  The Highwaymen initially laugh at Ezekiel’s proposal to give them access to the Kingdom and the fair, but Carol sweetens the deal.  Carol offers the Highwaymen the chance to see movies and they jump at the opportunity.  But, let’s not forget that Jerry would like his sword back as well, which gave us some welcomed comic relief during the episode.  The Highwaymen show up to help Tara and the others and accept this new job opportunity to keep the roads safe, but what else do we know about them?  Are they friends or foes?  We’ll have to wait and see, but so far I am liking this new group.

1

“I’ll kill him first.”

Daryl is sick of running, as Connie suggests that they get to higher ground and enter an abandoned building that she has used previously.  There are some supplies and several areas have already been blocked off, which could give Daryl and the others an advantage.  Lydia tells Daryl that Alpha will send Beta to take them out, but Daryl is not intimidated.  Daryl and Connie continue to make a great tag team, as they eliminate the threats that come after them and I have to give a special honorable mention to Dog, who was not afraid to jump in the fight either.  The fight between Daryl and Beta had me on the edge of my seat and it ended with Daryl pushing Beta down an elevator shaft.  However, things are not always that simple, as we learn that Beta is still alive at the end of the episode.  Something tells me that this guy is not that easy to kill, so Daryl Dixon better watch his back.  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Walking Dead below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Walking Dead” season 9 episode 12: “Crying Is Weak”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s The Walking Dead season 9 episode 12, I realized that it is possible for people to change, but it’s difficult to let our guard down and trust them again.  Do we take the chance or do we continue to play it safe because of the potential consequences?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “Guardians,” we meet Beta and get a glimpse into life as a Whisperer.  Meanwhile, Daryl and Connie show off some synchronized slaying, Eugene gives Gabriel some advice, and Michonne makes a big decision.  My top 5 moments from The Walking Dead season 9 episode 12 are:

5

“You be a damn fool to let her go.”

So, I almost felt like Gabriel was auditioning for a role on Maury, as he reminded Eugene that he is not the father of Rosita’s baby, which makes things more than complicated.  Rosita is upfront with Gabriel and leaves the choice up to him, but he is clearly very conflicted over what to do next.  Eugene has strong feelings for Rosita as well and just wants her to be happy.  He provides Gabriel with some advice and looks on, as Gabriel approaches Rosita and Siddiq toward the end, implying that they are all embracing this complicated situation together.

4

“You can’t keep a big dog locked up forever.”

Michonne approaches Negan and asks him why he came back to Alexandria.  Michonne demands answers and Negan tells her that he has truly changed and that he can help her.  Negan hears everything from his cell and he can be very useful, but Michonne is not buying it whatsoever at this point.  However, Negan makes some very valid points that should be considered.  He had the chance to run and he came back, but Michonne is very guarded, refusing to believe that Negan can become a productive member of society.  Just let him out already!

3

“Crying is weak.”

Lydia was not joking when she said that you do not want to cross her mother, Alpha.  In this episode, heads literally roll, as Alpha makes an example out of a couple who try to undermine her authority.  Alpha shows no mercy and decapitates the woman right in front of everyone.  Her husband, or boyfriend, begins crying and Alpha whispers, “Crying is weak,” right before she stabs him.  Remember there’s no crying in the zombie apocalypse!

No crying

Alpha is proving to be a very formidable villain, but she clearly still has a weak spot for her daughter, Lydia.  However, I think that the true beast within her will be unleashed if Lydia betrays her, which may make her almost unstoppable.  She seems to focus a lot on being like an animal, which can be extremely dangerous, but it’s all about survival of the fittest now.

2

“People don’t really change.  You did.”

Michonne confronts Judith about talking to Negan and tries to tell her, “He is not your friend.”  Judith explains that Negan truly listens to her, but Michonne doesn’t want her anywhere near him.  Judith proves to be wise beyond her years, as she reminds Michonne that he is still a human being.  Michonne has a lot of feelings bottled up inside her and she begins to finally reflect on some of her decisions.  She decides that she will ultimately help The Kingdom and recognizes that everyone has the right to “weigh the risks and choose.”  It’s always a gamble to take a chance when there are so many threats, but Michonne’s talks with Negan and Judith clearly had an impact on her.

1

“Kill him…”

So, my own personal favorite moment was when Lydia punched Henry in the face.  I almost fell out of my chair laughing.  Henry winds up in a dangerous situation now, as he tells Alpha, “I came for her.”  Alpha recognizes that she can use Henry to her advantage, but Beta also reminds her that her daughter may have feelings for him.  Alpha puts this to the test and commands Lydia to kill Henry or Beta will kill them both.  Lydia is shocked by this and is clearly very conflicted, but some hungry walkers break the tension and begin attacking the camp.  Daryl uses this distraction to get Henry out of there, but Henry refuses to go without Lydia, as they all head off together.  What will Alpha do now that her daughter has willingly left?  Has Lydia truly switched sides?  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Walking Dead below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Walking Dead” season 9 episode 11: “I Can’t Live With It Either”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s The Walking Dead season 9 episode 11, I realized that saying “it’s all gonna work out” doesn’t always mean that it will.  However, maintaining a positive outlook in the world of the dead is easier said than done.  You make decisions that you have to live with it, but what if you can’t?  Can you still make a difference and change it…or is it too late?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “Bounty,” Alpha and the Whisperers have arrived and they are going to cause some conflict if they don’t get what they came for.  Meanwhile, Ezekiel and Carol tackle a side mission of their own and Connie winds up in a dangerous situation.  My top 5 moments from The Walking Dead season 9 episode 11 are:

5

“You can’t have her.”

Alpha and the Whisperers are at the gates to retrieve Alpha’s daughter and she promises that there will not be conflict if they simply cooperate.  Daryl initially tells Alpha that she can’t have her, but everything changes when we learn that the Whisperers have Luke and Alden.  Alpha proposes a trade:  her daughter for the lives of Luke and Alden.  Before Daryl has much time to think this over, he notices that one of the Whisperers is holding a crying baby and he asks, “You brought a baby out here?”  Seriously, you read my mind, Daryl.  Alpha compares her group to animals, which is creepy on its own, but things begin to get more complicated when the dead arrive to break up the party.

4

“You live with it by staying who you are.”

While all the commotion is going on, Henry breaks Lydia out of her cell and tries to protect her.  We get some screen time for Enid, who says that she will go after Henry.  In a touching moment, Enid talks about losing people and mentions Carl’s letter to her.  Henry whines that it’s not fair, but Enid tries to remind him that he needs to stay true to himself and live with it as best he can.  She further explains that you “can’t let the bad things change you,” which is actually really great advice.  Henry tells Lydia that he is going to miss her and she actually tells him that she will miss him too.  I guess all of Henry’s whining paid off, as he shares a brief kiss with Lydia.

Buffy drinking

After watching the preview for next week’s episode, it looks like Lydia is going to be asked to eliminate Henry, but will she be able to do so now that they have the potential for teen romance?  We’ll have to wait and see.  When Lydia is reunited with her mother, she is greeted with a smack in the face and a reminder to refer to her as “Alpha.”  Alpha is definitely not up for mother of the year, but she did break her own rules to retrieve Lydia.

3

“It’s movie time.”

So, I absolutely loved that the show gave us some fun in this episode.  Sometimes the episodes can drag a little and feel heavy and we need some comic relief or moments of fluff to keep us connected to the characters and to be entertained.  Carol and Ezekiel get some screen time, as they head off with Jerry and friends for an important side mission.  As they approach a movie theater filled with the dead, Jerry hilariously comments, “It’s movie time!”  Ezekiel is all about creating and maintaining community and he wants the children to be able to experience watching a movie.  We even get a fun “mission mix” soundtrack to accompany them, as they lure the dead out of there.  It seems like everything is going according to plan until Jerry drops the bubble wrapped projection bulb, but all is not lost.  Carol makes the decision as the “queen” to retrieve it and they take out the walkers and successfully complete their mission.  Yay!

2

“Natural selection.”

During the episode, the dead break up Alpha’s talk with Daryl and the others, as Alpha signals for the Whisperer mother to put down her baby.  Alpha explains that it is “natural selection” and that if the mother cannot quiet the baby, the dead will.  I found myself shouting at the television at this point, as Alpha is proving to be extremely dangerous and ruthless.  I actually feel bad for Lydia now.  Luke and Alden are being held captive and Luke uses sign language to inform Connie what is going on, who has been hiding nearby.  Connie courageously rescues the baby and ends up in an extremely dangerous situation.  She heads into the corn fields and we see everything from her perspective, as the sound is cut, which was a brilliant decision.  Connie tries to take out the Whisperers one by one, but they keep coming and I was even startled several times, as they continued to pop up out of nowhere.  This moment was eerie and terrifying, but so well done.  Luckily, Daryl shows up to save the day and Connie makes it out of there with the baby.  Talk about suspense!

1

“I can’t live with it either.”

Toward the end of the episode, Henry confronts Daryl and asks him how he can live with what he did.  Daryl explains that “the world is just shit sometimes and you live with it.”  Daryl knows that he did what he had to, but he still has some guilt lingering.  Henry continues to be naive and impulsive, as he takes off after Lydia and leaves Daryl a note, saying that he can’t live with it.  Daryl decides to go after Henry and Connie wants to tag along.  When Daryl asks her why, she writes down, “I can’t live with it either.”  It looks like Daryl and “Dog” have a new companion, as they all head out together.  I am really liking Connie, played by Lauren Ridloff, and I think that she may be able to help Daryl turn a corner.  While I still ship Daryl and Carol together in the end, this may be a chance for Daryl to truly connect with someone.  Daryl is used to being on his own, but he can’t do everything by himself.

Overall, I thought this was a solid episode and the corn field scene was captivating and intense.  We are still left with some questions, however.  We see a mysterious symbol on the back of a sign after Carol and Ezekiel leave the movie theater and we still don’t know about the “X” marks.  Are these symbols connected or are they separate threats?  The symbol looks like an upside down “V,” which could relate to dominance or power, but there could be endless possibilities.  I would love to hear some of your theories on this.  Stay tuned!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Walking Dead” season 9 episode 10: “I am Alpha”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching AMC’s The Walking Dead season 9 episode 10, I realized that sometimes we desperately want to see the good in someone and ignore all the signs around us.  Perhaps that person has the potential to be good, but sometimes other forces get in the way.  And when that other force is your mother, you don’t really have a choice…or do you?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “Omega,” Henry continues to grow closer to Lydia, while Daryl keeps a watchful eye on them.  Meanwhile, the new arrivals try to sneak out and find Luke and the Whisperers make their presence known.  My top 5 moments from The Walking Dead season 9 episode 10 are:

5

“She’s a liar.”

During the episode, Tara and some of the newcomers come across horses that have been half skinned, which have caught the attention of a hungry walker horde.  Tara and the others recognize that they had been with Luke and Alden, realizing that their friends have gone missing.  Tara does not want to do anything rash that might get someone killed and suggests that they go back and plan what to do next, especially since they don’t know if they can trust Lydia.  The leadership role is new for Tara, even though she has been there through it all, but I appreciate that she is honest and to the point.  The newcomers decide to sneak out and try and find Luke, which is dangerous after dark.  Tara later explains that she would have preferred that they had simply come to her, proving that she has the potential to become a true leader of the people, but is she ready to make the hard choices when they come up?

4

“Can you stay with me tonight?”

So, the creepy budding romance between Henry and Lydia continues in this episode.  Henry believes that Lydia is a good person and it appears that Lydia may be warming up to him, although her idea of a romantic evening out includes eating dirt and worms.  I mean, “hunger is a gift,” after all.  Daryl has been listening in on the conversation, which upsets Henry.  He feels used, but Daryl tries to make him understand that Lydia could be dangerous and that they need to find out as much Intel as they can.  After contemplating taking a hammer to Henry on their journey outside the cell, Lydia freaks out when she hears a baby crying and has second thoughts, begging Henry to take her back to the cell.  Henry seems really eager to connect, but I wonder what Carol will think when she finds out what is going on.  Either way, my “dumb ass Henry” comments continued throughout this episode and I am not shipping these two whatsoever.

3

“You don’t know shit about me.”

Daryl recognizes the marks on Lydia’s arm and realizes that she has been abused, which is something that Daryl has dealt with in his own past.  Lydia recognizes that Daryl doesn’t really belong either, but Daryl does not want to reveal anything about himself to her.  Daryl insists that they are changing the world back, but does he truly believe that this is possible?  Daryl has shown glimmers of belonging and he can be extremely loyal, but he also does well on his own, which may make him doubt himself.  Has he really grown soft or is he prepared to do what is necessary to protect the people he cares about?

2

“I knew what she was…I knew what she did.”

During the episode, we get a glimpse into Lydia’s past, which starts out at Day 23.  Lydia is around five years old and she has to deal with a lot of trauma growing up.  Both Lydia’s mother and father begin showing signs of cabin fever, as they remain inside for days upon days.  Lydia initially remembers her father being killed by a walker, but later reveals that it was her mother who killed him.  Lydia’s mother starts off seeming strong, but she later shaves her head and reveals just how dangerous she could be, warning others to shut their mouths, explaining where the concept of “The Whisperers” comes from.  Lydia tells Daryl and Henry that when someone is left behind, the group simply moves forward, but is any of it true?  Can Lydia really be trusted at all here?  While I sympathize with her traumatic past, that’s really all she knows and intimidation and fear can motivate someone to do almost anything.

1

“We only want one thing from you…my daughter.”

Overall, there was not too much action going on in this episode.  However, the last few minutes were bone-chilling and had me on the edge of my seat.  The Whisperers approach the gates and Lydia’s mother steps forward without her mask.  She introduces herself as “Alpha” and tells them that they want her daughter back.  In the preview for next week’s episode, Alpha eerily states, “wrong answer” when Daryl says that they aren’t going to give her back.  What will the Whisperers do to get her back?  Are our survivors prepared for a war?  Where are Luke and Alden?  I think we need Carol to return as soon as possible and it looks like we will see her next week, as I would personally love to see a face-off between Carol and Alpha.  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on The Walking Dead below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
