The Pros:

An addicting whodunit plot.

Much like Who Killed Sara, this series had an addicting mystery that connected from the past to the present. I was trying to piece everything together as the episodes continued, which made it an engaging and compelling watch. There was a core mystery centered around a horrific crime, but there were also other secrets revealed throughout the series that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Gorgeous setting.

I don’t know what it is, but I just love thriller series that take place on an island. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. I also thought the choice of setting really showed how things can appear to be beautiful and peaceful on a superficial level, but the darkest parts of someone can be kept hidden.

The Cons:

Dark and heavy content…

The crime in question was very difficult to watch and viewers should pay attention to the warning messages at the beginning of certain episodes. Some of the content in this particular series was emotionally draining at times, so be prepared for that.

So am I in or out?

Spoiler-Free Review of “Irma Vep” on HBO Max: Alicia Vikander is Mesmerizing on Screen

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“I need a good movie…”

Irma Vep is a new limited series based on the 1996 film of the same name. The series premiered on June 6th 2022 on HBO Max with the first episode available to stream now. There will be eight episodes in total that will release weekly. Irma vep stars Alicia Vikander, Byron Bowers, Tom Sturridge, and Adria Arjona. Each episode runs for approximately 52-55 minutes.

An American actress lands a role in a modern remake of the series, “Les Vampires,” as she battles some of her own insecurities after a bad breakup.

Here is the trailer:

Irma Vep may be an unusual watch, but it is also a fascinating one with a captivating lead. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Alicia Vikander is incredible!

I already liked her as an actress, but she really pulls you in with this series. She commands the screen whenever she’s on it and this series is no exception. I think she was made for this role and the cat-suit looks phenomenal on her. I can’t wait to see what she does next. She is the best part of this series!

A unique watch.

This series is very different and I don’t even really know how to describe it. That being said, there are elements of humor blended in, along with some drama (on and off screen). The series also channels the vibe of a seductive crime thriller, which has the potential to be brilliant. The show takes a real look at movies behind the scenes and makes it relevant in the year 2022 to give this series a unique upgrade.

The Cons:

Confusing at times…

Even though I think there is an unusual charm to this one, I felt a bit lost at times. I am not too familiar with the 1996 film so perhaps I need to watch that first to get a better understanding, but there were a lot of moving pieces here and it was overwhelming.

A stylish and unique series that reels you in for more and more.

Even though I was a bit lost at times, Alicia Vikander was striking on screen and there were enough interesting things happening to keep me intrigued for now.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Surviving Summer” on Netflix: Blue Crush style Coming-of-Age Series

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Are you into surfing?”

Surviving Summer released on Netflix on June 3rd 2022. The Australian teen series features ten episodes available to stream now. The show stars Sky Katz, Kai Lewins, Savannah La Rain and Dustin Clare. Each episode runs for approximately 26-30 minutes.

A wild teen from New York is sent to Australia to live with family friends she hasn’t seen in years, introducing her to the world of surfing.

Here is the trailer:

Surviving Summer will remind you of Blue Crush and Dive Club, but does this coming-of-age story add anything new to the genre?  Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Aesthetically pleasing.

This series was gorgeous to watch. The scenery was incredible and the music soundtrack complimented it well. I felt like I was being transported somewhere else while watching it and I think the “summer” premiere was a smart one. I’m ready to hit the beach after watching this…

Images courtesy of Netflix

Likable characters.

I would have preferred a little bit more edge to some of the characters, but much like Dive Club, this series was very family friendly. I liked a lot of the characters and I appreciated that we spent enough time peeling back some layers. Even though this was a story I have seen over and over again, it was still entertaining to watch because of the characters.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Predictable with unnecessary montages…

The montages were a bit much in this one. The episodes were on the short side, but I’m not sure that we really needed ten of them. I think this gave us a lot of unnecessary fluff when the story itself was entertaining enough to keep me invested. The ending was also really predictable as well so I’m not sure that this coming-of-age story really did anything that different to make it stand out in the genre.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

This series had its charms and it was absolutely stunning to watch, but I wanted a little bit more from it. If you enjoy Blue Crush, you will find a lot to enjoy with this one, but you’re probably better off just re-watching that film.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Surviving Summer in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Perfect Mother” on Netflix: Quick French Thriller with a Solid Twist

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I’m in trouble…”

The Perfect Mother (Une Mère Parfaite) premiered on June 3rd 2022 on Netflix with four episodes available to stream now. The mystery-thriller series stars Julie Gayet, Eden Ducourant and Tomer Sisley. Each episode runs for approximately 45-50 minutes.

A mother risks everything to find out the truth when she learns that her daughter is a suspect in a murder investigation.

Here is the trailer:

The Perfect Mother is an addicting mystery thriller with a shocking ending. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

The Perfect Mother Spoiler Free 1

Easy to binge-watch.

With only four episodes, I was able to finish this series in a little over three hours. I think this was a really smart decision. This show could have easily gone off track if it had eight episodes like most Netflix series and it was refreshing watching something so quickly. I didn’t feel like I had to work to get to the end. It all just unraveled naturally and it was very entertaining to watch.

A twist I did not see coming!

Wow, what a twist! This was probably the best part of the series for me. I thought things were wrapping up and then we were thrown a curve ball that really made this series so much more enjoyable.

The mystery was a good one, but the twist was truly fantastic. If you enjoy series like Pieces of Her and the Harlan Coben series, you will feel right at home with this one.

The Cons:

The Perfect Mother Spoiler Free 2

Images courtesy of Netflix

Unnecessary sub-plots and slow at times…

Since we only had four episodes, we didn’t really need the sub-plots mixed in. They slowed down the overall pace and they took away from the main mystery, which was decent enough. The episodes could have been a little shorter to keep things on track and I would have been fine with that.

So am I in or out?

This series had a solid mystery with a fantastic twist worth sticking around for. If you’re looking for a quick series to binge-watch, you’re in the right place!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Ledge” (2022) on Demand: Intense and Brutal Thriller

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Use your mind…”

The Ledge (2022) originally released on February 18th 2022. It is currently available to stream on demand. The adventure thriller film stars Brittany Ashworth, Ben Lamb, Nathan Welsh, and Louis Boyer. It runs for an hour and twenty-five minutes.

A rock climber ends up in a life threatening situation when she flees from several men trying to kill her by climbing up a mountain with barely any equipment.

Here is the trailer:

The Ledge follows a simple formula that is actually really effective, giving us plenty of thrills and edge-of-your-seat moments. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Intense AF!

This movie really delivered for me in the intensity department. At first I wasn’t really sure about what I was going to watch and then I was completely reeled in before I knew it. There were so many moments that had me screaming at the television. I love survival-type thrillers like this. In a lot of ways, this film had the same vibe as Alone (2020), which I also really enjoyed. If you haven’t watched that one yet, you can check it out on Hulu.

The Ledge had a very simple approach, but sometimes less is more and I think that this style really suited the film.

Brittany Ashworth is fantastic!

I loved her character and I thought her performance was believable. She was very easy to root for in this. We didn’t get too much set-up in this film, but the layers of her character were later revealed during her climb and I thought that this helped the audience connect to her journey that much more.

The Cons:

Some over-acting from others…

While Brittany Ashworth really gave it her all, the guys didn’t have the same impact. There was some over-acting going on and these characters didn’t really do much for me even though we got some glimpses of potential here and there. This wasn’t a major con, but since some of the acts we witnessed were really brutal and violent, I wanted a little bit more out of the performances so that the intensity matched. Screaming “bitch” over and over isn’t really that original or effective…

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

The Ledge may seem like your average thriller, but it really delivers with brutal intensity and a captivating performance. If you enjoy films like Alone (2020) and The River Wild, you will thoroughly enjoy this adventure-thriller.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Emergency” (2022) on Prime Video: A Unique College Comedy

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“There’s an unconscious white girl in our living room…”

Emergency (2022) released on Prime Video on May 27th 2022. The dark comedy thriller film stars Donald Elise Watkins, RJ Cyler, Sebastian Chacon, Maddie Nichols, and Sabrina Carpenter. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

College roommates are forced to put their night of partying on hold when they discover an unconscious girl in their living room.

Here is the trailer:

Emergency is smart and funny with a resonating message at its core. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Not your average college comedy…

This film definitely had some Superbad and Booksmart vibes, but it also managed to step away from these films. It found its own voice and also created an important conversation worth having. There was an interesting balance going on, but I think that it worked in the film’s favor. It was mostly a comedy, but it also tackled issues of race, social class, and police profiling.

Fun cast!

I thought the performances were really solid in this one and Sebastian Chacon was on another level of funny. You really believed that these three were friends, which helped me connect to the movie that much more. There were some laugh-out-loud moments, but there were also some really heartfelt and emotional ones as well, so it was important to witness believable performances and I think that we did.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Takes a while to get going…

Even though I enjoyed this film, I thought the second half was much stronger than the first. This film was a little slow at times and I think it struggled with its identity as well. I appreciated that it was trying to do something different here, which made it stand out from other films in this genre, but it needed to work on the execution a little more to make everything that much more seamless.

I also thought the tagline was a little confusing. It was advertised as “it’s not what it looks like,” but I’m not sure that this was very fitting after watching it…

So am I in or out?

I’m in!

Overall, this film was very entertaining with lots of layers. The ending was done very well and the performances were convincing and powerful.
