Spoiler-Free Review of “Night of the Hunted” on Shudder: Adrenaline-Fuelled Thriller Delivers

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I’ve never done anything to you…”

Night of the Hunted released on Shudder on October 20th 2023. The survival-thriller film stars Camille Rowe, J. John Bieler, and Jeremy Scippio. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-five minutes.

When Alice stops at a remote gas station late at night, she’s targeted by an unknown sniper. Her only hope is to flag someone down to help her or try and survive on her own by using her surroundings to her advantage.

Here is the trailer:

Night of the Hunted is my kind of thriller with an exceptional female lead and a simple, but intense formula that will hold your attention until the very end. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Shudder

Starts off with a bang…literally!

With minimal set-up, we are launched into an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that doesn’t hold back. It’s a simple, but effective approach, reminding me immediately of films like P2 (from the same director), Alone (2020), and Hunt Her, Kill Her. These are my favorite kinds of survival thrillers. I loved how bloody and brutal this one was. It had my heart racing and I thought that ending was so well done!

Images courtesy of Shudder

A strong and resourceful female lead.

Camille Rowe was bloody fantastic as Alice. I thought she was clever and bad-ass. I liked that her character was flawed in a lot of ways. It gave the film more substance and it also made her more relatable. She wasn’t perfect by any means, but you still wanted to root for her against all odds.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Shudder

Loses a touch of steam in the middle.

This wasn’t a major con because I thought the dialogue needed to happen in order for the film to progress, but it didn’t compare to the beginning and end of this film, which were so beyond intense. I actually really liked the dynamic going on and thought the conversations helped enhance the movie in a lot of ways, but I have a feeling that there will be some mixed thoughts on this.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

Night of the Hunted is a ruthless and intense survival thriller featuring a bad-ass female lead who commands the screen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Founders Day”: A Fun Political Slasher

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Things are really heating up in the race for Mayor…”

Founders Day released back in August 2023 at London Fright Fest and will be playing at Toronto After Dark on October 20th 2023. The slasher horror film stars Naomi Grace, Devin Druid, Amy Hargreaves, Catherine Curtin, and William Russ. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

A small town is plagued by a series of brutal killings leading up to a cutthroat mayoral election.

Founders Day has a fun premise and a few twists worth sticking around for. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Mainframe Pictures

Fun idea for a slasher film.

We have plenty of horror entries for Halloween and Christmas, but not too many November/Fall ones. With the film, Thanksgiving coming out soon and now with Founders Day, we have some some solid slasher entries for the season to indulge in, which is a very good thing!

This film is brought to us by the same creator of She Came from the Woods and I thought it had a similar vibe to that film. It had some dry humor mixed in, which worked well for the most part, and some stand-out characters. Some of the small town discussions even reminded me of Jaws in a playful way, which worked to the film’s advantage.

Catherine Curtin stole the movie for me and was as fantastic as ever and I thought our lead did a decent job as well.

Inventive kills!

I actually really enjoyed some of the kills in this one and thought they were well done. I would have liked a touch more gore and some extended chase scenes, but I’m all for some slasher fun just in time for Fall.

The Cons:

The fluff in-between slowed down the pacing.

Overall, I thought the runtime for this film was fine, but I could have done without some of the unnecessary conversations between certain characters. They felt a little filler. The killings were a lot of fun and I didn’t think this film needed to be weighed down by anything else. It found its groove again by the time it reached the climax, however.

So am I in or out?

I’m in about 75 percent…

If you’re looking for a fun B-movie slasher film with an inventive premise and some killer twists, there’s plenty to enjoy with this one.

I think horror fans will appreciate this one for sure.

Special thanks to Mainframe Pictures for this press screening.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Founders Day in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Dark Harvest” on Demand: A Solid Halloween-Themed Entry to Horror

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

It’s Halloween…you know what that means…”

Dark Harvest (based on the novel of the same name) is a supernatural horror film that released on October 13th 2023 on demand. It stars Casey Likes, Emyri Crutchfield, Elizabeth Reaser, and Jeremy Davies. The films runs for an hour and thirty-three minutes.

Teens participate in a yearly “run” to hunt down a supernatural creature that emerges from the cornfields on Halloween night.

Here is the trailer:

Dark Harvest is a gory mix of The Purge and The Hunger Games with a nightmare inspiring villain. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of MGM

Fun for Halloween.

I’ve been loving all of the new entries for Halloween this year and Dark Harvest is another decent entry for sure. Sawtooth Jack is a terrifying villain, but the real horror lies within this small town filled with dark secrets and betrayals.

While this film is far from perfect, I absolutely loved the Halloween feel!

Impressive cinematography.

I was honestly really blown away by this. This film was shot very well and I loved that it took place in the 1960’s. It really had a unique feel to it. I’ve seen plenty of modern day horror entries so this was a nice change of pace.

The Cons

Images courtesy of MGM

Confusing at times and goes off the rails…

I think I needed to read the book first to really understand what was going on. The audience is thrown into things and I found myself trying to piece together the premise on my own. The characters needed a lot more development so that we would care about what happened to them.

I did think that Emyri Crutchfield was the strongest performer by far as Kelly. A lot of the other characters just kind of faded into non-existence and our main protagonist was slightly frustrating.

The first half of this film was actually really decent and I was impressed by the extreme gore displayed, but some of the twists had me scratching my head and were a little too bonkers for me personally. That may just come down to preference though…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of MGM

I’m in about 75 percent…

Fun Halloween horror with some moments of brilliance, but there were a lot of messy and confusing aspects to deal with as well.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Dark Harvest in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Conference” (2023) on Netflix: Corporate Team Building Just Got A Lot More Entertaining!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

Teamwork makes the dream work!”

The Conference (Konferensen) is a Swedish slasher horror film that released on October 13th 2023 on Netflix. It stars Katia Winter, Adam Lundgren, Lola Zackow, Maria Sid, and Bahar Pars. The films runs for an hour and thirty-nine minutes.

Things go horribly wrong at a corporate retreat when a masked killer begins to pick them off one by one, forcing them to put their team building skills to the test.

Here is the trailer:

The Conference is a bloody good time that is extremely relatable and clever. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

A killer premise that actually delivers.

Anyone who has ever had to participate in some kind of team building retreat or workshop at work can easily relate to the premise. It’s on a new level of torture. All you want to do is go to work and do your job (or at least get through your day). The last thing you want to do is spend unnecessary time working on teamwork with silly activities.

Well, how about a masked killer to spice things up?

I was blown away by this premise and so happy with the actual execution. Slashers are making a serious comeback and this is a worthy entry for sure! More please!

Images courtesy of Netflix

Sticks the landing!

This film kept building and building and when it reached its peak I was really worried about it messing up the ending, but it delivered and then some! I was thoroughly satisfied with the conclusion and hope to see more from this director soon.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Takes a little while to kick into high gear…

But once it finds its groove, it’s slasher gold! I almost didn’t mind that it took a little while to get going because it mirrored the endless feel of these types of workshops. If you’re thinking of tuning out, just stick around. I promise it will be worth it!

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in!!!

The Conference is a smart slasher that depicts the real “hell” behind professional development retreats with fantastic gore and plenty of entertaining moments!

If you’re a horror fan, you should absolutely check this one out. It was such a nice surprise!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Shining Vale” Season 2 on Starz: Courteney Cox is in Control!

*This is a spoiler-free review for season two so feel free to read on!*

“I am no longer a danger to society…”

Shining Vale season two premiered on Starz on October 13th 2023 with the first episode. There will be eight episodes in total that will air weekly. The horror comedy series stars Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, Gus Birney and Judith Light. Each episode runs for approximately 30-34 minutes.

After being checked into a mental hospital by her family, Pat attempts to change her outlook on life and banish her demons for good…but are they really gone?

Here is the trailer:

Shining Vale season one flew under the radar, but it was quirky, creepy, and absolutely delightful. Is season two worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Starz

Courteney Cox is back and better than ever!

She was absolutely brilliant in season one and had me laughing out loud quite a few times. Pat may have toned down her cursing with her new “rehabilitation,” but Courteney is still commanding the screen in the best way possible.

It took me a little while to warm up to the rest of the cast in season one, but already I am liking the new character dynamics and the ending of episode one left us  with a lot of ghostly potential already. More please!

The fun is only just beginning…

I was slightly worried about the direction for season two, but I think the season two premiere did enough to present us with some familiar plots while leaving the door open for more. I’m hopeful that we can explore more behind the actual hauntings this season and maybe even meet a few new creepy characters to keep us invested. Either way, I’m intrigued and I’m happy that the shorter episodes are here to stay because they work very nicely with the overall pacing of this show.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Starz

I needed a refresher course…

I definitely recommend watching the recap in the beginning. I probably should have binge-watched the first season again because I felt a little lost at first. Now that we’ve gotten through the initial set-up for season two, I’m hoping that we kick things into high gear because season one took a little while to hit its peak. I’m confident we’ll get there though.

So am I in or out?

The Phelps family is back…quirks and all!

Shining Vale was one of my favorite horror comedy series of last year and I’m excited to see where season two goes.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Saw X” in Theaters: A Solid Entry to the Franchise

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I’d like to play a game…”

Saw X released in theaters on September 29th 2023. The tenth film of the Saw franchise stars Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Renata Vaca, and Steven Brand. It runs for approximately an hour and fifty-eight minutes.

Taking place between the events of Saw and Saw II, John Kramer travels to Mexico to undergo experimental treatment, hoping to cure his cancer once and for all, but once he discovers that everything is a scam, he turns the tables on these con artists to teach them an important lesson about life and death.

Here is the trailer:

Saw X invites us back into the dangerous mind of Jigsaw with extreme gore and plenty of twists and turns to keep us guessing up until the end. Does the tenth film do the franchise justice? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Lionsgate

John Kramer and Amanda are back!

I’m a huge fan of the Saw franchise. I have very fond memories of waiting on lines out the door at the movie theater, anxiously waiting to watch each of these films on the big screen. The earlier films are the best of the franchise so I had high hopes when I learned that both John Kramer and Amanda would be featured in this entry and they delivered and then some!

It was very smart to have this film take place between Saw and Saw II, giving the audience the chance to gain back some nostalgia after some of the later films failed to deliver.

Images courtesy of Lionsgate

More gruesome than ever!

The games in this entry were beyond extreme. My skin was crawling during several moments. This film did not hold back with the blood and gore, reminding us that the Saw franchise knows how to make its audience squirm in the best way possible.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Lionsgate

Predictable at times…

I always enjoy the twists in Saw and this one had plenty, but a few of them I saw coming a mile away. This wasn’t necessarily a major con, but I guess I wanted a little bit more in this department.

Make sure you stick around for the end credit scene though!

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Lionsgate

I’m in!!!

Twisted and gory with a solid story that brought us back to the beginning in a clever way!

While not my favorite film of the franchise, I think it put forth a valiant effort and reminded me why I fell in love with these films in the first place.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Saw X in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Til Death Do Us Part” (2023) on Demand: An Absolute Train Wreck…

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I can’t go through with it…”

Til Death Do Us Part (2023) released in select theaters on August 4th 2023 and is now currently available to watch on demand as of September 19th 2023. The horror-thriller film stars Natalie Burn, Cam Gigandet, Jason Price, Orlando Jones, and Ser’Darius Blain. It runs for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

After running away from her wedding, a bride must fight for her life against seven deadly groomsmen.

Here is the trailer:

Til Death Do Us Part attempts to channel films like Ready or Not and The Invitation, but does it do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Born to Burn Films

Fun premise with a decent female lead.

When I first saw the poster for this film, I was so excited to watch it. It screamed Ready or Not and it was billed as being from the creator of Final Destination, which I thought should be a very good thing. The actual idea behind this film was really solid and our female lead wasn’t half bad. She put forth some effort in her fight scenes (even though some of them were completely ridiculous and unbelievable) and gave me some incentive to watch until the end.

The pros stop here though…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Born to Burn Films

Terrible dialogue and mediocre fight scenes…

The dialogue was so excruciatingly bad in this. I recognized a few actors in this one so I thought it had potential, but as soon as they opened their mouths, it was over. The fight scenes were OK and everyone spent way too much time walking around and talking about absolutely nothing for the majority of the movie.

The flashbacks felt mostly filler even though they sort of made sense by the time I got to the end. I really didn’t care at that point, but at least they gave me a break from listening to Cam Gigandet’s character recite his best man speech over and over again…

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Born to Burn Films

Unfortunately I’m out on this one…

Disappointing and excruciatingly painful to get through.

I’d recommend just watching Ready or Not again instead…

Spoiler-Free Review of “It Lives Inside” in Theaters: Utterly Terrifying!

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“There is a dark thing that feeds on those feelings…”

It Lives Inside released in theaters on September 22nd 2023. The supernatural horror film stars Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Betty Gabriel, and Gage Marsh. It runs for approximately an hour and forty minutes.

Sam rejects her culture to fit in at school, but when a mythological demonic spirit targets her former best friend, she must learn to accept who she is and where she comes from in order to defeat it.

Here is the trailer:

It Lives Inside is engrossing from start to finish, exploring an intriguing mystery deep rooted in Hindu lore with some spine-tingling moments along the way. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Neon

Creepy and unsettling…

I thought that this film successfully built up terror in a very tangible way. It didn’t rely on jump scares or gimmicks. Rather, it created this frightening world and continued to expand on it with effective uses of light and darkness, instilling a real sense of fear in its characters and its audience.

I’ll definitely be having quite a few endless nightmares thanks to this film and I mean that as a compliment! There were a number of times I was on the edge of my seat with dread, watching the terror unfold.

Images courtesy of Neon

A compelling mystery.

I really loved the mystery and story surrounding this film. Sure, it was creepy as hell, but it also really explored some interesting aspects of Hindu mythology, creating a layered mystery that held my full attention. I loved the tie ins to culture, family, and ancestry here and there were even a few moments that reminded me of Charmed in a way, which had me cheering for these characters all the way!

I really loved Sam as a character and thought she was extremely easy to root for. I also liked all of the supporting characters, which is rare in films like these…especially when you know that everyone is not going to make it.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Neon

Plays it safe in some aspects.

I really liked this film, but I think it needed to go one step further to truly immerse us into this terrifying world. It did a great job setting it up, but perhaps it needed a R rating to achieve perfection.

Don’t get me wrong, I was still completely terrified, but I think this film could have been a horror masterpiece if it would have gone a little bit more over the edge.

There also wasn’t too much buzz around this movie. I hope that people go to the theater to see it because it is a worthy entry to horror.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

An unsettling and engrossing watch with a unique mystery at its core.

One of my favorite horror films of the year!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this one. I thoroughly enjoyed my watch and I hope that everyone gives this a chance because it really has a lot going for it.

Spoiler-Free Review of “Slotherhouse” on Demand: Batshit Crazy and So Much Fun!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“I wanted to introduce it as the new house mascot…”

Slotherhouse released in limited theaters on August 30th 2023 and is now available to watch on demand as of September 19th 2023. The horror comedy film stars Lisa Ambalavanar, Sydney Craven, Tiff Stevenson, and Bianca Beckles-Rose. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-three minutes.

Emily decides to adopt a sloth to help her become president of her sorority, but when her sorority sisters go missing, she suspects that her cute new friend may be behind some brutal murders.

Here is the trailer:

Slotherhouse is an entertaining horror comedy that is outrageously funny as long as you go into it expecting it to be completely bonkers. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Gravitas Ventures

Horror comedy gold!

OK, I was a little skeptical at first. A slasher film featuring a sloth?! It sounds ridiculous and it is, but wow was it a lot of fun. This movie was so self-aware and extremely funny. It recognized what it was and took the audience on a super fun roller-coaster ride, while still managing to somehow provide us with an important life lesson at the end. Call me impressed!

Images courtesy of Gravitas Ventures

A villain to root for!

Alpha may be my new favorite horror villain. Cute and cuddly, but so unpredictable and sassy! I had such a blast watching Alpha. The more ridiculous and absurd…the better! These girls had no idea who they were dealing with!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Gravitas Ventures

Needed more time devoted to the killings…

Don’t get me wrong…we had some amazing and hilarious kill scenes, but I wanted some more gore and I was also disappointed that we rushed a few of them through a montage. We spent a lot of time on silly dialogue between the sorority sisters, but we needed a little bit more screen time for Alpha’s impressive killing spree. The last thirty minutes kicked things into high gear though!

So am I in or out?

Spoiler-Free Review of “American Horror Story: Delicate” Premiere on FX: Off to a Creepy Start!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“It’s gonna happen this time…”

American Horror Story season 12 has arrived! The new season premiered on September 20th 2023 with its first episode on FX (next day on Hulu). Episodes will air weekly. The season will feature 10 episodes in total. The first five episodes will be devoted to Part one (Delicate) and then the second half of the season will air at a later time with another five episodes.

Each episode runs for approximately 42-48 minutes. AHS: Delicate stars Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian, and Cara Delevingne.

Anna has been trying to have a baby for quite some time after several failed attempts at IVF, but her luck may be turning around with the newest trial. Only it leads to some dark and disturbing hallucinations, making us wonder what she may be actually carrying inside of her.

Here is the trailer:

American Horror Story: Delicate has a solid cast and a disturbing premise with lots of potential. Is it worth a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of FX

Great cast!

I was thrilled to find out that Emma Roberts was starring in this season. She’s no stranger to the AHS series and I’m confident that she will deliver as the leading lady. I wasn’t initially sure how I felt about Kim Kardashian starring in this, but so far she’s doing a decent job and I’m excited to see her do more. I’m sure we’ll see some more familiar faces along the way from the AHS family, which is always lots of fun.

Images courtesy of FX

Super creepy premise.

I’ve seen other horror films that center around the urgency of getting pregnant and they have managed to freak me out to new levels. I’m hoping that this series can do so and more. So far there are a lot of weird factors going on and I’m anxious to see everything unfold. It’s off to a great start though!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of FX

Can it stick the landing?

I’ve seen every season of AHS and many of them start off in such a promising way, but then they go completely off the rails in the end. I’m hoping that with five episodes, AHS: Delicate can deliver a satisfying ending, but we’ll have to stick around to find out.

So am I in or out?
