Ranking my top 5 Female Vampires from TV: “I’m Going to Blow Out the Candles”

Happy Thursday TV viewers!  Why should boys have all the fun?  For today’s list, I am going to be looking at female vampires from television.  Whether she is considered witty, seductive, crazy, or just simply bad-ass, these female vampires refuse to let the boys steal the spotlight, as they give them a run for their money and capture our affection along the way.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  My top 5 Female Vampires from TV are:

5

The Countess from American Horror Story:  Hotel

Countess collage

“Why would I help you when it gives me so much joy to see you suffer?”

Portrayed by Lady Gaga, The Countess truly embodies the art of dark seduction.  In the beginning of the season, The Countess and Donovan go to a cemetery and seduce a young couple at a movie screening.  While the scene is initially sexual and passionate, it turns deadly when they brutally kill the couple and devour their blood.  The Countess is powerful and beyond alluring to others, as she really masters the penetrating stare deep within one’s soul, which allows her to corrupt and destroy.  The Countess has a hypnotizing quality about her, as she lures young children to her in order to maintain her eternal youth and she maintains her killer fashion sense with a glove that is simply to die for…literally.

Jessica Hamby from True Blood

Jessica collage

“I’m so sick of silverin’ myself all day every day, being pissed off all the time. This is what PMS used to feel like.”

In Jessica’s mortal life, she grows up with a strict Christian family and is extremely pure.  Bill turns Jessica into a vampire and she becomes very dangerous, but mostly because she is also an emotional teenage girl.  Jessica is doomed to be a vampire virgin for eternity, which is both hilarious and horrible at the same time.  Jessica speaks her mind and is not afraid to let all of her emotions run wild, as she really proves to be a teenage daughter from hell for poor Bill.

Later in the series, Jessica really develops as a character, but she never disappoints with providing us with some fun entertainment along the way.

3

Caroline Forbes from The Vampire Diaries

Caroline collage

“You are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you.”

During her mortal life, Caroline is actually quite annoying and judgmental.  However, when she is turned into a vampire, Caroline transforms into a very likable character, even though she has a new lust for blood.  Caroline is always levelheaded and is the one that you can truly envision being your own best friend.

Caroline gif.gif

She is loyal and thoughtful, even though she is a creature of the night, and she is often the character to present us with an unlikely voice of reason in the midst of the chaos going on in Mystic Falls.  She is also still sassy, which is entertaining as well.  They say that “blondes have more fun,” but in this case, I guess blonde vampires do.

2

Pam or Pamela Swynford De Beaufort from True Blood

Pam collage

“I don’t know what it is about me that makes people think I want to hear their problems. Maybe I smile too much. Maybe I wear too much pink. But please remember, I can rip your throat out if I need to, and also know that I am not a hooker. That was a long, long time ago.”

This list would not be complete without including Pam.  Pam is Eric’s second in command at Fangtasia and she is not the most likable gal, but she doesn’t care, which makes her so incredibly amazing.  Pam does not have any issues with being a vampire.  She just accepts who she is and she embraces the darkness with flair.  Pam’s witty remarks are laugh out loud funny and she doesn’t care who she pisses off.

Pam gif 2

Her leather ensembles are to die for and her devotion to Eric is something truly remarkable, as he is one of the few beings in the world that truly matters to her.  Pam is absolutely bad-ass and is a vampire that you do not want to mess with.

Some honorable mentions before revealing my number one pick are:

  • Rebekah from “The Originals”
  • Harmony from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”
  • Olivia Godfrey from “Hemlock Grove”
  • Katherine from “The Vampire Diaries”
  • Tara from “True Blood”
  • Elena from “The Vampire Diaries”
  • Darla from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”

1

Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel

Drusilla collage

“I met an old man. Didn’t like him. He got stuck in my teeth.”

So my number one pick has to go to Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.  Played by the absolutely incredible Juliet Landau, Drusilla is Spike’s girlfriend and is pretty much batshit crazy, but that’s all part of her charm.  Drusilla first comes to Sunnydale back in season 2 and has been weakened by a mob.  Drusilla has visions and often sees stars indoors and enjoys having tea parties with her dolls.  However, these are not ordinary tea parties, as Dru tends to blindfold the dolls who don’t behave so that they cannot watch her feed and kill.

Drusilla gif 2

Drusilla is extremely dangerous when she does get her strength back and even kills a slayer named Kendra, using her hypnosis on her before slashing her throat with her nail.  Even though Drusilla is a vampire, she feels so much.  It may be misguided, but she later explains to Buffy that vampires are very capable of love.  Drusilla makes several guest appearances later on both Buffy and Angel and always causes some trouble, while keeping us thoroughly entertained.  She still remains my absolute favorite female vampire on television and probably always will be.  Just remember, if you set a “bad example, you will have no cakes today.”

I hope you enjoyed the list and please feel free to post your thoughts and comments below on some of your favorite female vampires from TV.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

When Kallie Bennett, a jaded teenage girl plagued by her alcoholic mother and her peers molded out of sheer bubble gum perfection, chases after Alice in Wonderland herself, she ends up lost in her own version of Wonderland, which forces her to face her utmost fears and introduces her to familiar characters with a dark twist. Among these characters is Ches, a gorgeous vampire with a conflicted conscience, who becomes Kallie’s guide and blossoming love interest. She also crosses paths with Queen Hartley, a manipulative witch who has the power to strip away one’s memories and imagination, which brings a bone chilling new meaning to “off with their heads.” In The Search for Alice, Kallie starts to realize that her Wonderland is just as frightening as her own reality and that she cannot always run away from her problems. She must figure out a way to defeat Queen Hartley and return home before it is too late, but she soon learns that escaping Wonderland means leaving Ches behind forever.

Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 5: “Do Not for One Second Think I am Weak”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 5 last night, I thought the saying “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” was appropriate, or in Cordelia’s case, keep your girls close and the Antichrist even closer, but will she be able to outsmart Michael Langdon?  Place your bets now.  I’m all in on Coven.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Boy Wonder,” Cordelia has a vision about the end of the world and agrees to administer the test of the Seven Wonders for Michael.  Meanwhile, John Henry continues to have his suspicions about Michael, Madison is given an important task, and we are presented with more Easter eggs.  Did you catch them all?  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 5 are:

5

“And if you succeed, you will be the next Supreme and it will change everything.”

In the beginning of the episode, Cordelia has a startling vision about the future and sees a world filled with “cannibalism, fire, and death.”  Cordelia saw her academy “reduced to cinders” and is not about to take this warning lightly.  She recognizes that their very survival might depend on what she does next and finally agrees to administer the test of the Seven Wonders at the rise of the blood moon.  Does this sound familiar?  During Roanoke, the spirits were able to cross over coinciding with the blood moon cycle, so this is absolutely a connection to season 6.  We also know that the spirits were linked to Lady Gaga’s character, Scathach, who was the first of the Supremes.  It makes sense that the test of the Seven Wonders is connected to this as well, especially since it is a test of true power and worthiness.  Cordelia reveals that Michael will be named the next Supreme if he can pass the test.  Myrtle hilariously points out that men make horrible leaders, but Cordelia stands by her decision.

4

“I’m a gluten detector.  That’s my only power.”

Myrtle reminds Cordelia that Michael is not the only one with power and we get to witness another example of Mallory’s extraordinary abilities.  Mallory heals the wounds of an injured deer, but doesn’t just heal them; she completely undoes them, which is remarkable.  We also finally get to see Coco’s entrance into the academy and learn that her only real power is that of a “gluten detector.”  Coco explains that her brother was about to eat something and she got a horrible feeling and pushed it away from him, saving his life.  However, word spread fast and Coco’s socialite friends requested that she do a test of sorts on their food to ensure that they can hit their target weight.  Coco hilariously begins humming when she scans the food and declares whether or not it has gluten.  Cordelia points out to Coco that her powers can develop and grow and that detecting if something is dangerous is actually something significant.  While we haven’t gotten a chance to see Coco’s powers advance, she is still bringing some comic relief to us along the way.  In terms of Mallory’s powers, we know that it has been hinted that her ancestry line goes back to Salem, but is it possible that she is somehow a descendant of Scathach?  It seems like Mallory may be the only one who is potentially strong enough to face Michael Langdon and it would make sense to have the son of Satan face off against one of the daughters of the first original Supreme.  We’ll have to wait and see; however, but I am hoping we get more screen time for Mallory soon.

3

“Stand down bitch.”

John Henry is still refusing to accept Michael Langdon as the next “alpha” and decides to go out and get some answers.  Before he has a chance to do so, he crosses paths with the original Ms. Mead at a gas station and she cryptically says, “So many things left to do and so little time in the hour glass.”  While the idea of time running out in an hour glass can represent so many things, John Henry is caught off guard and Ms. Mead eliminates him as a threat forever, setting him on fire.  I have to say that I was just really starting to enjoy John Henry’s character and he brought just the right amount of sass to the table.  Michael is being very careful to eliminate any threat around him, but it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out about who he really is.

2

“What always happens when a new Supreme rises…the old one fades away.”

Michael begins to pass the test of the Seven Wonders with flying colors, even though the tests were presented like a silent film in black and white.  When he gets to the final test of “Descensum,” he is to project his soul into the afterlife, but Cordelia changes things up and requests that he retrieve Misty from there.  Cordelia reminds everyone that she is still The Supreme and that she outranks everyone there and is not weak at all, even though her powers seem to be fading.  Michael agrees to the test and we once again see a series of doorways, reminding us that this season is connecting us to so many different worlds and realms.  Michael finds Misty in a school science lab of sorts, where she is forced to dissect a living frog over and over again.  I thought Madison’s personal hell was pretty bad, but I definitely feel for Misty here.  When Michael arrives, Misty asks if he is there to save her and he is able to bring her back successfully.  I was excited to see the return of Lily Rabe’s character and hope that Misty can help out her sister witches.  When Michael completes this, Cordelia begins to fade even further, signaling that Michael will become the next Supreme.

1

“He will never be The Supreme.  I wanted to keep him close so we would be ready.”

Cordelia has been keeping her poker face going this entire time, as she later reveals that she never planned to let Michael become the next Supreme.  Misty even tells her that there is something not right about him and it was like he was speaking to evil directly.  Cordelia’s powers may be fading, but she is still on top of her game.  She cleverly got Michael to bring back all of her girls so that they would be ready for the final battle.  She thanks Misty for bringing them the first proof and in a touching moment, in walks Stevie Nicks, “The White Witch.”  She serenades Misty and the two dance together, which is wonderful to see.  Welcome back Stevie!  Later on, Cordelia pulls Madison aside and tells her that she wants her to go find out more about Michael.  One of the warlocks, Behold Chablis, was eavesdropping and has his own reasons for wanting to tag along.  At least John Henry was not the only one to have a gut feeling about Michael, even though Chablis initially seemed to disagree with him.  Cordelia agrees that they will go together and Madison asks, “What’s so special about this place?”  Cordelia explains that “it’s where it all began” and we cut to the front of Murder House.  It looks like Madison will be moving in and we will get to see some of our old favorite characters return next week.  Are you ready?  Stay tuned!

P.S. fun fact:  Madison shares the same last name as Dr. Charles Montgomery, who is the one who originally built the Murder House.

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on American Horror Story:  Apocalypse below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

“American Horror Story” ranking the seasons from best to worst: Nine Circles of Hell

So after finishing up FX’s American Horror Story:  Cult last night, I started thinking about how it held up against the other seasons.  Before the premiere of AHS : Cult, Ryan Murphy, co-creater of the series, had posted the nine circles of hell from Dante’s Inferno:

Limbo (Murder House)

Lust

Gluttony (Hotel)

Greed (Freak Show)

Anger (Roanoke)

Heresy (Cult)

Violence

Fraud (Asylum)

Treachery (Coven)

Murphy had previous explained that each season is connected, but the link to the nine circles of hell invests the viewer into new theories and also suggests that the series will have an end after season 9.  Perhaps it is all meant to keep fans on the edge of their seats, but it does make one really think about the similarities to each circle of hell and how they are all intertwined.  After watching all of the seasons so far, I have ranked them in the following order (best-worst):

  • Coven
  • Hotel
  • Murder House
  • Cult
  • Asylum
  • Freak Show
  • Roanoke

While you may agree or disagree with my rankings, it really got me thinking about how this matches up with Inferno’s nine circles of hell.  The last (ninth) circle of hell is “treachery” which matches up with my overall pick for best season, AHS:  Coven.  For me, the betrayal in “Coven” really scratches beneath the surface and tugs at your soul.  On the surface, the witch-craft element is very entertaining and reminiscent of the movie, The Craft.  However, there are a lot more elements going on in the show and treachery is at its core.

My second favorite season is AHS:  Hotel which pairs up with “gluttony.”  According to Inferno, “Gluttony” is the third circle of hell.  Those who are guilty of “gluttony” are forced to lie in a slush created by an icy rain which is meant to represent those who have overindulged in “food, drink, and other worldly pleasures.”  The icy rain that brings an eternal bitter cold to the sinner connects me to the Countess portrayed by Lady Gaga in AHS:  Hotel.  She is a vampire already representing eternity and feeds on the blood of others.  What’s really interesting to me is that in this circle of hell, the beings punished are not able to see the other victims lying near them because of their own selfishness.  Not being able to feel remorse or love for others is dangerous enough, but its combination with gluttony is even more so.

My third favorite season is the first season AHS:  Murder House.  Interestingly enough, this aligns with “Limbo,” which is the first circle of hell.  This could be just a coincidence, but those who are trapped here are unable to move on to heaven and are forced to reside in an inferior version, much like ghosts who are unable to move on, which appear throughout Murder House.

If the theory is true, that would leave AHS with 2 more seasons representing “Lust” and “Violence.”  While I am not sure if we will see any burning rain or violent winds, it really gives the viewer a lot to think about in terms of what type of premise we will see next.

As of August 2018, we now also know that the series has been picked up for a tenth season and will continue through 2020.  I still think that the “nine circles of hell” idea is important and relevant to the show, but I am curious to explore more and see where we are headed.  I am counting the days until the premiere on September 12th.  How about you?

Feel free to post your thoughts and theories on AHS below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
