Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 10 Season Finale: “But my Sisters are a Legion Motherf*cker”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 10 season finale last night, the final battle we have all been waiting for is finally here.  Only it may not be the showdown that you were initially predicting.  Please note major spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Apocalypse Then,” the past finally meets the present, as the witches of coven face Michael Langdon.  Sacrifices are made and betrayals are finally dealt with in this jam-packed finale.  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 10 season finale are:

“So this is goodbye.”

In the beginning of the episode, we witness Myrtle Snow paying a visit to Jeff and Mutt.  This further explains how the witches were able to successfully book Coco and Mallory a reservation at Outpost 3.  Myrtle puts Ms. Venable in her place and reminds her that purple is for royalty.  Later on, Cordelia explains to the girls that they will forget everything they know about themselves.  Coco’s new personality is actually modeled after Madison, which explains a lot and Madison hilariously tells her to “consider it an upgrade.”  Coco is meant to be mean to Mallory, as Cordelia needs to ensure that Mallory doubts herself so that her powers are not detected, revealing that she really has thought of every detail here.  She further explains that her “powers will emerge when they are ready.”  We also get to see Cordelia, Myrtle, and Madison waking up after the apocalypse, proving our theory that they would use the healing powers of the Louisiana swamps.  After all, “it’s time.”

“There is no way that bitch could get a show on television without selling her soul to the devil.”

After Madison shows off her less than impressive skills as an Uber driver, she drops off Coco and Mallory, who are now under the identity spell.  Madison notices Dinah’s billboard on a bus and quickly realizes that she is the one who sold them out.  Madison wants to do something about it, but Cordelia explains that Dinah must stay safe until they are ready to “make her pay.”  In present day, Dinah refuses to get caught in the middle of the battle between the witches and Michael, but we are all in for a surprise when Marie Laveau walks in, played by the wonderful Angela Bassett, and says, “She needed the help of a voodoo queen but that ain’t you.”  Cordelia made a deal with Papa and gave him Dinah’s soul, freeing Marie in exchange.  Marie takes out Dinah and tells her to give Papa her regards.  All hail the real voodoo queen!

“It’s payback bitch.”

Now that all of our players are in place, the battle we have all been waiting for quickly begins.  Ms. Mead is eliminated and Madison channels her inner Tony Montana from Scarface, as she opens fire on Michael with Ms. Mead’s arm.  Madison agrees to hold off Michael as long as she can, but is quickly eliminated.  “I guess it’s back to retail.”  Marie and Coco also team up to take Michael down, but he kills them both and reminds us, “I’m nothing like normal.”  Brock also finally shows up again and brutally stabs Mallory for not taking him on the plane, but Myrtle takes him out.  As Mallory’s life force begins pouring out of her, Cordelia knows what she must do to protect her sisters and the world.  It seems like all hope is lost, but Cordelia faces Michael with her head held high and reminds him that he may be the only son of Satan, but “my sisters are a legion motherf*cker!”  Cordelia stabs herself so that Mallory can rise as the next Supreme and complete her time travel spell, which is the ultimate sacrifice.

“I’m scared.”

It’s 2015 and Michael is just a boy again, living with Constance Langdon.  As Michael heads out into the street, Mallory runs him over with a car several times to eliminate the threat once and for all.  Constance stands over him and Michael begs her to take him back into Murder House so that they can be together forever, but Constance refuses to grant his last wish and tells him to go to hell.  The ultimate battle we have all been waiting for is over, but it’s not the showdown we were predicting.  Mallory has changed the timeline to save her sisters and also the world, but what does this mean for the rest of the AHS universe?  After all, changing the past can have unforeseen consequences for the future.

“The battle between good and evil never ends.”

Now that the threat is eliminated, Mallory returns to her coven and remembers everything.  She is so excited to see Cordelia again and Cordelia even asks her if they have met before.  Myrtle is not back because Cordelia no longer saw the threat of the end of the world and Madison will have to “sweat it out a little longer” in her retail hell.  Mallory was able to get some “blazing street cred” with creatures of the underworld since she took down the Antichrist and Misty and Nan are safely returned.  Only Nan would prefer to return to her Papa.  I guess as long as she is happy.  Mallory reminds us that the battle between good and evil never ends and we know that there needs to always be a balance in the world.  Avoiding the apocalypse does explain how we are able to see the year 2020 in AHS Hotel, which successfully fills in some gaps for us.  Timothy and Emily are able to cross paths again in this new world, which initially seems sweet and romantic.  Remember them?  Only we know that they were saved because of their DNA and that they were worthy of potentially repopulating the earth.  Emily gives birth to the new Antichrist, as they are horrified when they find his babysitter brutally murdered.  Ms. Mead and the Black Pope knock on their door, recognizing the power and potential in their son, proving that evil has indeed found its loophole.  Stay tuned for season 9!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 8: “What Am I Supposed To Do?”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 8 last night, we took a break from the “Coven” story-line and followed Michael Langdon’s path, as he desperately tried to figure out what he should do next.  I guess being the Antichrist is tougher than one might imagine.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Sojourn,” Cordelia tries to get through to Michael, but to no avail.  Meanwhile, we meet some new characters at the “Church of Satan” and also catch up with some old ones, revealing some answers about Outpost 3.  We also continue to get some fun Easter eggs along the way.  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 8 are:

“You can write your own destiny.”

In the beginning of the episode, Michael Langdon is beyond heartbroken to find out that Ms. Mead has been burned at the stake.  Cordelia reminds Michael that he’ll “never see her again” and that he is alone now, but Michael explains that he still has his father.  Despite Michael being the Antichrist, Cordelia still tries to get through to him and sees the potential humanity within him.  Michael doesn’t want to hear it; however, and says, “Somehow, someway, I’m going to bring her back and then I’m gonna kill every last one of you.”  Well at least Michael is still motivated, but this moment is important because it reminds us that Michael has his own identity and path to find now.  Whether we are on Team Coven or Team Langdon, we can’t ignore the fact that Michael has a tough road ahead of him.

“Are you ready for an old fashioned human sacrifice?”

Michael goes in search of answers and calls out to his father.  He starves himself for four days in the woods and begins hallucinating, seeing children reaching out to him with food and drinks.  It is important to note that we see an apple here, reminding us again about the “Garden of Eden” and also connecting us to the future where everyone at Outpost 3 will be poisoned by apples.  Michael also sees snakes and goats, which we have seen during the apocalypse as well, foreshadowing what is to come next.  Michael eventually stumbles upon the “Church of Satan” and meets some interesting characters.  The leader of the Church of Satan, played by Sandra Bernhard, may be influenced by evil, but she is actually pretty funny.  She inspires the crowd and reminds them that stealing $100 out of a register is not the kind of evil she is talking about.  When she presents the human sacrifices, she gives us a little bit of their resume, revealing that both sacrifices do a lot of good work in their lives and she hilariously comments, “Bitch please” and “Isn’t that just too precious?”  She is ready to make the world a little “shittier” by sacrificing these people to Satan.  I guess it’s worth it to sell your soul to the devil, especially if you get to sleep with Ryan Reynolds as an added bonus.  The “Church of Satan” is most likely known as “The Cooperative” in the future, putting together more pieces of the puzzle.

“I’m the one you’re waiting for.”

While taking a back seat at the “Church of Satan,” Michael gets quite the show and even gets to listen to the choir perform “O Fortuna,” which means “Oh Fate” when translated from Latin and further goes on about destiny, which is perhaps the sign that our Michael Langdon has been waiting for, even though his father has yet to make an appearance.  After losing Ms. Mead, Michael is in need of some guidance and meets Madeline, played by the amazing Harriet Sansom Harris.  Madeline steps in as a sort of mother type and even gives Michael a hot meal.  After Michael shows her his mark behind his ear, Madeline is absolutely convinced that he is the one they have all been waiting for.  Madeline presents him to the rest of the church and Michael proves his worthiness by killing the two sacrifices.  The church is clearly behind him and he is ready to embrace his destiny, but he still feels emptiness without Ms. Mead by his side.

“I am HR bitch!”

Madeline thinks that she can help Michael by introducing him to characters played by Evan Peters and Billy Eichner who are a bit eccentric, extreme, and heavily addicted to cocaine.  Before we get to them, it’s important to note that we also get to see Ms. Venable here.  Ms. Venable is clearly not a huge fan of her bosses, reminding them not to call her “babe” and looking absolutely fabulous in purple, which is apparently her thing.  This is important because in the future, “The Purples” are the elite at Outpost 3.  Ms. Venable also loves to rock purple in the future as well.  The character played by Evan Peters talks about the importance of a light rock playlist and we even get to hear the song, “The Morning After” play again, suggesting that this could have been the initial inspiration for using this music in Outpost 3 to drive everyone mad.  While I didn’t catch the names of these two characters, it is possible that they are under a kind of identity spell in the future as well, especially if Michael considers them to be allies or perhaps former allies.

“You came to the right place.”

We learn that the characters played by Peters and Eichner work in robotics and Michael is looking to re-create Ms. Mead.  After filling them in on everything about her, Michael is impressed by their work and we get to see Miriam Mead 2.0, which finally helps us connect the dots in the future.  Michael feels complete with her by his side again, which signals that he is now ready to fulfill his destiny.  It seems like we now have a lot of the past explained, so I am ready to fast forward to the future.  Stay tuned!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 3: “Surprise Bitch! I Bet you Thought you’d Seen the Last of Me”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 3 last night, the moment we have all been waiting for is finally here.  Are you ready?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “Forbidden Fruit,” Mr. Langdon continues to interview potential candidates to determine if they are worthy to join “The Sanctuary” and discovers a surprising secret about Mallory while revealing one of his own as well.  Meanwhile, we learn more about Ms. Mead’s past, Ms. Venable announces that Outpost 3 will be celebrating with a Halloween Soiree, and the Easter eggs kept us focused and entertained.  Did you catch them all?  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 3 are:

“It’s the one day of the year when the rest of the world puts in some effort to be fabulous like I am every other day.”

During the episode, Ms. Venable announces that they will be holding a Halloween Soiree to celebrate.  The theme of the party will be a Victorian Masquerade ball and everyone is beyond excited to have something to look forward to.  Only Ms. Venable plans on using the party as a way of arranging for everyone to eat the apples delivered from “The Cooperative” at the same time, which she poisons with the assistance of Ms. Mead with snake venom.  Everyone deserves just a glimmer of hope and happiness and they scamper off to get their costumes ready.  Mr. Gallant hilariously explains why he loves Halloween while he reminisces with Coco about their Michael Jackson costumes from when they were younger.  While the party is good news, Coco recognizes that they will probably announce who is going into “The Sanctuary” during the party.  She understands that everything has some kind of hidden agenda, reminding us that “the closest thing to a Christmas feast was stew” or does she mean Stu?  Sorry couldn’t resist.  Either way, the Halloween party will definitely be the most excitement they have seen in a very long time.  Although you may want to think twice about bobbing for apples anytime soon.

“Happy Halloween bitch.”

Surprise!  Brock is back, played by fan favorite, Billy Eichner.  We quickly discover that after Coco left her boyfriend, Brock, he has been living out in the wasteland for all this time.  Brock has been exposed to radiation and is sporting some bald spots and gruesome marks on his face that prove he has definitely been through the ringer.  While Brock initially seemed to be privileged and materialistic in the opening episode, he has shed that persona all too quickly.  Brock has become somewhat of a bad-ass and reminded me of “Mad Max” while out in the wasteland.  Brock explains that he is just looking for his girlfriend, but something tells me that he is not looking to kiss and makeup.  Brock is aware of the shelter and spots one of the horse drawn carriages, hitching a ride to Outpost 3.  Brock makes his way in and cleverly sports a mask of his own during the masquerade party, inviting Coco to dance.  Coco mistakes him for Langdon and begins coming on to him, desperately looking for a way into “The Sanctuary.”  Only Coco is in for a big surprise when Brock reveals his identity and she asks, “What happened to your face?”  Coco tries to explain her actions, but just digs a deeper hole for herself when she compares her love to Brock to her love for sushi, explaining that she had to lock away her feelings for both, which does not amuse Brock at all.  Brock brutally stabs Coco in the head and says, “Happy Halloween Bitch,” with no hesitation.  While I’m not so sure how Brock will come into play now, we definitely should not discount him, as he has been exposed to the brutal reality outside and is looking for payback.

“Some people just have nothing special about them.”

In the beginning of the episode, Langdon interviews Mallory and recognizes a potential darkness within her.  Langdon further reveals more about his own abilities when he says, “I can see into the dark places that people desperately try to keep hidden.”  Langdon refers to it as a sort of talent or “night vision,” but it’s clear that Langdon possesses a lot of power.  Langdon was not expecting the power of Mallory; however, who ends up setting the room on fire with her mind.  Mallory is just as surprised as Langdon, who demands to know who she is.  Langdon prides himself on knowing everything about a person and reveals his own true face when he is thrown off guard by Mallory’s power.  While we know that Langdon is the baby from Murder House, it now appears that he is the Antichrist.  Langdon even performs a dark blood ritual and calls out to his father, who we can only assume is the devil himself.  Mallory later confides in Coco and Mr. Gallant, explaining that she thinks she set the room on fire.  Coco hilariously asks her if she knocked over a candle and Mallory says, “I think I made the fire with my mind,” further comparing herself to Dark Phoenix.  Marvel fans rejoice!  This is not the first reference we have seen to Marvel during the show.  The song, “Time in a Bottle,” played during an important moment for Mr. Gallant last week, which Evan Peters knows all too well.  In X-Men:  Days of Future Past, my absolute favorite scene featured Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver and helped break Magneto out of prison while this song played and we saw everything in slow motion.  You can watch that original scene here!  Think this is just a coincidence?  Maybe it is.  However, Mallory also rises from the dead or the ashes, just like the actual Dark Phoenix, which makes me think otherwise.  Either way, I was truly impressed by Billie Lourd’s performance this week and I am looking forward to exploring more about Mallory and her abilities.

“All people if given the right pressures or stimulus are evil mother fuckers.”

Last week, we were completely shocked when Ms. Mead was revealed to be a robot of some kind.  In this episode, we learn more about Ms. Mead’s “false memories,” which all involve Halloween.  Hooray!  Ms. Mead remembers trick-or-treating as Rosie, the Robot maid, from The Jetsons back in 1962 and even recalls her first date in 1968, when she watched the movie, Rosemary’s Baby, which is definitely hinting at the idea of Langdon’s own existence.  Ms. Mead recognizes that these memories are false, but yet they feel somewhat real to her.  Ms. Mead prides herself on being loyal to Ms. Venable and is shocked when she turns the tables on her and shoots Ms. Venable, killing her.  Even though we initially thought the “poison apple” scheme was Ms. Venable’s idea, Langdon reveals that it was his own and that Ms. Mead is operating under his command.  He further explains that he made Ms. Mead to be a sort of prototype, based on someone he loved as a child.  Ms. Mead starts to understand the fading memory she has of a young boy, realizing that it must have been Langdon.  Who is Ms. Mead based on?  We can only assume that Langdon is referring to Michael’s grandmother, Constance Langdon, played by the fabulous Jessica Lange.  The pieces are coming together for sure, but there is still so much left to be uncovered.  I am absolutely looking forward to it, however.

“Surprise bitch!  I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”

After bobbing for apples, Ms. Venable invites everyone to enjoy their tasty treats.  The apples themselves and the title of the episode scream references to the bible and the Garden of Eden, but no one at Outpost 3 seems to be paying attention to that.  The apples are poisoned and we watch the disgusting demise of the characters we have come to know in the last three episodes.  When thinking of poison apples, Snow White also comes to mind, and we do see several women come back to life after eating the poison apple.  While I was initially upset to have invested so much time in the characters residing at Outpost 3, I was delightfully entertained by the return of three of our favorite witches.  The record player was initially playing the song, “Baby I’m a Want You,” by Bread, which you can listen to here!  The lyrics that stood out were, “Like a guiding light to help me through my darkest hour,” which seem beyond appropriate for the entrance of some of the members of Coven.  The record player changes to the song, “She’s a Rainbow,” by The Rolling Stones, which you can listen to here! Right on cue, Cordelia, Madison, and Myrtle Snow make a grand entrance through the gates and are here to save the day and protect the world from Langdon most likely.  They look for their sister witches and resurrect Mallory, Coco, and Dinah.  Madison, played by Emma Roberts, delivers her “surprise bitch” line perfectly and we are ready for the fun to begin.  Stay tuned!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 2: “What is this, the Hunger Games?”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 2 last night, we witnessed several Easter eggs from previous seasons, foreshadowing the return of some of our favorite characters.  While we don’t know what to expect just yet, these glimpses and hints are not to be ignored.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Morning After,” Mr. Langdon makes an announcement to the group and explains that he will be conducting a series of questions to find out who is worthy of “cooperating” and joining “The Sanctuary.”  Meanwhile, Timothy and Emily discover Ms. Venable’s deceit and grow closer as a result, Mr. Gallant has a visitor at his door, and we get a fresh new ingredient for dinner.  Anything should be better than Stu, right?  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 2 are:

In the beginning of the episode, Timothy and Emily are horrified by the presence of snakes in Outpost 3.  Ms. Mead is excited by a new protein for dinner, but everyone else is not so sure.  After all, they have just been traumatized over possibly eating Stu in their stew.  Sorry I can’t let that one go just yet.  The snake soup does not look too appetizing, but the snakes resurrect and are alive when dinner is officially served.  While this moment is horrifying, it also reminds us that this is considered a form of resurrection.  We know that the snakes are not the only ones to come back to life in this new world.  Who’s next?  We’ll have to wait and see, but this absolutely screams “Coven.”

“I won’t sugar coat the situation.”

Mr. Langdon quickly introduces himself to the rest of the group and informs them that the rest of the Outposts have been overrun by some kind of “feral cannibals.”  Mr. Langdon explains that The Cooperative had a fail-safe in place and that they have an outpost called “The Sanctuary,” which has security measures protecting it to ensure its survival along with the humans who reside in it.  The group learns that Mr. Langdon has been sent to determine who is worthy of joining “The Sanctuary,” which will involve a series of questions.  Mr. Gallant is the first one to “volunteer as tribute.”  Insert “Hunger Games” joke here, which I thought seemed appropriate since Coco hilariously cried out, “what is this, the Hunger Games?”  Mr. Langdon explains to Mr. Gallant that he will know if he is lying or trying to trick him.  Does this mean that Mr. Langdon possesses some kind of supernatural powers and abilities?  While we are not too sure of this yet, it definitely appears like we are being pointed in that direction.

“You’re a fighter.  I like that about you.”

Later in the episode, Mr. Langdon speaks to Ms. Venable in her chambers and reminds her that “complete abstinence” was not part of the rules and that this could be determined punishable by death.  It makes us wonder why Ms. Venable felt the need to enforce this rule so much.  There clearly seems to be a common trend so far of “lust,” creeping into the walls of Outpost 3, which brings us back to Ryan Murphy connecting the seasons of AHS to the “Nine Circles of Hell” from Dante’s Inferno.  You can read more on this theory here! Mr. Langdon recognizes Ms. Venable as a fighter and reminds her that “there’s no need for us to be adversaries.”  He further explains that he wants to see the part of her that humiliates her the most, ordering for her to remove her dress.  Ms. Venable finally shows us some real vulnerability here and hesitantly unzips the back of her dress, revealing some kind of deformity and scarring on her back.  Ms. Venable asks if she has passed the test, but Mr. Langdon coldly replies, “No.”  Before they can get any further, they are interrupted by Ms. Mead who requires Ms. Venable’s immediate attention.

“Is this phase 2 of the interview?”

When Mr. Gallant is questioned by Mr. Langdon, there is an underlying sexual tension throughout their conversation.  Mr. Langdon asks Mr. Gallant to tell him about his anger and immediately links it to his grandmother, recognizing that Mr. Gallant has some untamed hatred brewing inside of him.  Later on, there is a knock at Mr. Gallant’s door and he is greeted by an old friend of AHS:  The Rubber Man.  The man is dressed in black latex head to toe and Mr. Gallant’s grandmother discovers them having sex.  Fans will remember that The Rubber Man is revealed to be Tate from AHS:  Murder House (season one), also played by Evan Peters.  This makes things beyond confusing, but it is possible that someone else has embraced the suit, but we will have to wait and find out.  Mr. Gallant’s grandmother reports his behavior, looking out for her own survival and Mr. Gallant is whipped repeatedly by Ms. Mead.  Later on, Mr. Langdon tells him that he has never been to his room and that his neediness and desperation disgust him.  He harshly tells Mr. Gallant that he would not be with him if he was the last man on earth and they are pretty close to that very scenario.  Mr. Gallant is very upset by this cruel rejection and to make matters worse, his own grandmother refuses to accept him as well.  Later on, Mr. Gallant follows the Rubber Man and turns the tables on him, stabbing him for shaming him.  Only he quickly realizes that he has stabbed his grandmother to death instead, now seeing her corpse before his eyes.  Mr. Gallant is horrified by what he has done, just in desperate need for someone to love and accept him.  The damage is done, but we’ll have to wait and see if there are consequences for his actions.

“What are we doing?”

During the episode, Timothy and Emily sneak into Mr. Langdon’s room and find his laptop.  They are initially confused on how he can communicate with anyone, but assume it must be some type of satellite.  They read through some of the emails and learn that Ms. Venable has been making up the rules as she goes, particularly about the mandatory abstinence.  Timothy and Emily take things further with their blossoming relationship and it is implied that they do have sex.  Ms. Mead barges into the bedroom when they are sleeping and takes them to be punished.  Emily cries out to Ms. Venable that she knows the rules are not real, but they are still taken away.  A gun is pulled on Timothy and he courageously fights back and gets a hold of the gun.  Ms. Mead is shot and another shock is thrown our way.  Ms. Mead takes a look at her wound and we see some kind of white liquid coming out of it, which is definitely not human.  Is she a robot or something else?  I’m not sure, but it looks like we are in for more and more twists and turns.  Stay tuned!

P.S. fun fact:  Did you notice “The Morning After” song changed over to a song featuring Stevie Nicks?  Is it possible we will see her again along with some of our other favorites from Coven?

Ranking the top 5 moments from “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” season 8 episode 1 Season Premiere: “Everything We Know Is Gone”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  The wait is over and the end is here or is it now the beginning?  After watching the FX network’s American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 1 last night, we witnessed the end of the world, as an inbound missile alert threatened the entire planet.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The End,” many characters desperately tried to escape the destruction of the world, relying on their money and powerful connections to do so.  Meanwhile, an organization called “The Cooperative” arranged for other characters to be taken because they were identified as prime candidates to survive based on their DNA.  While the world enters into nuclear winter in the future, we watch a group of characters hold on to their own survival in Outpost 3 by following “the rules.”  My top 5 moments from American Horror Story:  Apocalypse season 8 episode 1 are:

“What’s a purple?”

Forty minutes before the bomb goes off, we meet Timothy, played by Kyle Allen.  Timothy is with his family when soldiers from The Cooperative burst in the door and explain that they are taking Timothy with him and that he will be safe.  Timothy tries to convince them to take his family as well, but they have strict orders to only take him with them.  Timothy was selected based on his DNA, which they detected when he completed some type of ancestry DNA kit.  Before he has a chance to say a proper goodbye, Timothy is taken and ends up in a cell underground next to a girl named Emily, played by Ash Santos, who was most likely taken for the same reason, although she explains she was in prison.  After the blast, the two are taken to Outpost 3 in Hazmat suits and witness two young adults being killed outside.  Timothy and Emily are horrified by what they see, but continue to the fallout shelter, Outpost 3, with little resistance.  While here, they are quickly introduced to Wilhemina Venable, played by Sarah Paulson.  Ms. Venable explains that she is in charge there and that they were both chosen to survive and will be known as “purples.”  Emily asks what this means and they learn that a purple is the elite and the worthy while the “grays” are there to serve them.  Everyone has a purpose and they are told that they must follow the rules no matter what, which include extremes like “no unauthorized copulation of any kind.”  When asked about her own purpose, Ms. Venable explains that they should think of her as the “strong arm of The Cooperative” and Emily courageously points out that she is not a purple then.  While it seems like everything has a certain routine and structure to it, Timothy quickly gets a warning sign when he sees the numbers “666” appear on the shower door and a whisper calling out, “beware.”  While we don’t know who is sending the message or what this means just yet, it’s clear that they are not the only beings to survive in the world.

“It’s like Satan’s Spotify playlist.”

During the episode, Timothy and Emily join the other guests in Outpost 3 and discover that some of the rich and famous have come along for the ride because of their connections and donations along the way.  This includes Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, played by Leslie Grossman, who hilariously told her significant other that they can see other people when she realized that they needed to leave on the plane without him to avoid the blast.  We also meet Mr. Gallant, played by Evan Peters, who has brought along his grandmother, played by Joan Collins.  There are a few other characters in the mix as well, but it’s clear that no one is used to following the rules and living in simplicity.  The mundane routine begins to set in, as they hear the same song play over and over, slowly driving them mad.  Meals consist of eating small cubes filled with vitamins that leave much to be desired.  Ms. Venable and her associate, Miriam, played by Kathy Bates, remind everyone that “we are the last vestiges of civilized life on the planet.”  Everyone is told that they must follow the rules in order to survive and they must keep out contamination at all cost.  We also learn that they have about enough food and supplies to last approximately 18 months.  Miriam announces that someone has brought in contamination from outside even though everyone swears that they have not done so.  Stu and Mr. Gallant are both identified as being contaminated and they are taken away brutally to be cleansed.  Luckily Gallant passes the contamination test on the second round, but Stu is not so lucky and begs not to be put through decontamination again.  Miriam shoots him in the head; however, ending the immediate threat.  It’s clear that Ms. Venable and Miriam mean business and they are not about to break the rules for anything or anyone.

“It’s only us.”

Later in the episode, we learn that Ms. Venable and Miriam are making up things as they go.  Miriam worries about what will happen when The Cooperative finds out, but Ms. Venable reminds her that “it’s only us.”  The two enjoy inflicting punishment and watching the faces of their victims, granting them some kind of temporary pleasure and power.  Ms. Venable says that “it gives me a tingle,” revealing that there is something sick and twisted going on with these two, but what will happen when The Cooperative finds out that they are dishing out their own kind of punishment and even pretending that some are contaminated to further along their cruel game?

“The stew is Stu!”

After the guests are clearly traumatized after Stu was shot, they are rewarded with a hot meal.  Everyone seems initially grateful and begins digging in, until they start finding bones that don’t really seem like they belong to a chicken.  “The stew is Stu!”  Everyone begins spitting out the food except for Mrs. Gallant who explains “I don’t care what it is.  It’s absolutely divine.”  While Ms. Venable tells them that they are not eating human flesh, it’s hard to believe anything that she says at this point.  Just when it seems like all hope is lost, the song they have been hearing over and over changes to a new one.  It begins playing Maureen McGovern’s song, “The Morning After,” which you can listen to here!  Everyone listens to the words and is convinced that it is a sign that they will be rescued.  Only we quickly flash to “18 months later” and no rescue has come at all.  The world has gotten colder and deadlier and it seems like everyone is clinging to an empty existence except for Timothy and Emily who have now fallen in love.  They ration one kiss a day just to be able to have something to look forward to, recognizing that they cannot do anything further for fear of breaking the rules.  While this is something sweet in the midst of all of this despair, I worry about Ms. Venable discovering their secret.

“Those who make it, live.  Those who don’t, end up like my horses.”

At the end of the episode, there is a breach at Outpost 3 and a horse and buggy arrives with a strange visitor.  Meet Michael Langdon, played by Cody Fern, who works for The Cooperative.  He explains that there is another Outpost that has supplies that could last up to a decade, but that he will determine who is worthy of survival there.  While it’s clear that he could make the determination to take everyone, he only has interest in those who are deserving.  While we don’t know what this entails exactly, Michael is no fool, as he recognizes that Miriam is already killing his horses outside.  He is not one to be messed with and Ms. Venable may be in some serious trouble for her abuse of power.  Which characters will be saved?  What else is left out in the world?  Stay tuned to find out!
