Spoiler-Free Review of “PULSE” on Netflix: Soapy Version of The Pitt Has Its Moments

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Let’s get through this day…”

PULSE premiered on Netflix on April 3rd 2025 with all ten episodes available to stream now. The medical drama series stars Willa Fitzgerald, Colin Woodell, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, Jessica Rothe, Néstor Carbonell, and Justina Machado. Each episode runs for approximately 45-48 minutes.

In the middle of a dangerous hurricane in Florida, a hospital team works together to handle every emergency thrown their way, but tensions flare when a doctor is forced to work side by side with someone she just accused of sexual harassment.

Here is the trailer:

PULSE is a essentially a mix of The Pitt and Grey’s Anatomy, trying to find the balance between tense life-threatening moments and juicy drama. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

A cast to be excited about!

I was about to give this one a pass because medical dramas aren’t really my thing with a few exceptions, but the cast drew me in. The show is produced by LOST’s Carlton Cuse and we even have LOST alum Néstor Carbonell starring in the series.

That’s already enough for me, but then we have the talented Willa Fitzgerald, the underused Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), and the always fantastic Justina Machado.

Everyone plays their parts well, but some deserved a little more screen time to shine. Either way, this is a worthy and talented cast.

Images courtesy of Netflix

Some adrenaline-filled moments.

I thought that the first half of this series was a lot stronger than the second half. While not nearly as exciting and intense as The Pitt, there were some moments that held my attention and had me on the edge of my seat. Just manage your expectations accordingly…

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Rushed flashbacks and time jumps that felt forced.

Honestly, they took away from the core plot for me. I get that they were trying to make us care about the characters, but the layers revealed felt soapy and superficial, glossing over any real moments of understanding and growth.

Starts out as one show and then quickly  becomes another.

I was really confused by this. At first, this series tried to be like The Pitt with its approach and there were a lot of similarities, but then it named dropped Grey’s Anatomy and quickly became a cheaper version of that show, focusing more on the soapy side of things.

This show clearly tried to channel what makes both shows great for their target audiences by mashing these genres together, but it failed to capture a real sense of intensity and grit, making it seem like a desperate imitation at times, which was disappointing.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in about 75 percent…

PULSE is a medical drama by the numbers despite having a talented and recognizable cast.

This series is more of a popcorn watch, but it does have some glimmers of potential. If you’re looking for a consuming medical drama, I’d recommend watching The Pitt instead, however.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on PULSE in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Smile 2” in Theaters: A Superior Sequel!

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Do you believe in like weird stuff?”

Smile 2 premiered in theaters on October 18th 2024. The supernatural psychological horror film stars Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula, Peter Jacobson, and Kyle Gallner. It runs for two hours and seven minutes.

A pop star named Skye Riley is trying to make her upcoming tour a success after battling substance abuse and surviving a car accident, but when she witnesses a horrifying event that she can’t explain, she begins to lose control of her life and sanity.

Here is the trailer:

Smile 2 is a chilling, terrifying, and unhinged trip that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Is it worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

Scream QUEEN, Naomi Scott!

Wow, she was absolutely fantastic in this! I didn’t think that anyone could top Willa Fitzgerald’s performance in Strange Darling, but Naomi Scott just gave the performance of her life and I loved EVERY SECOND OF IT! She was fierce, captivating, and willing to give this film her all. She just became one of my favorite scream queens of all time with that performance and I hope she appears in more horror films in the future.

Favorite performance of the year!

Seriously, I have chills.

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

So creepy and disturbing!

Similar to the vibe of the first film, the sequel had plenty of terrifying moments. It was fun seeing this in a packed theater. There were so many moments that had people jumping. This film descended into darkness a lot quicker than the original one, which was fantastic to experience. I loved the psychological elements and that ending was jaw-dropping in the best possible way!

OK and can we talk about that music?! I loved it!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Paramount Pictures

A few unanswered questions.

This wasn’t a major con and I actually think it will create an interesting discussion among fans, but I had a little trouble piecing together what was actually happening in this film at times (which I think was the point). I was along for the ride and willing to go with it, but I had a few questions by the time I got to the end that were never fully addressed.

Maybe we’ll get a part three?

So am I in or out?

I’m in 100 percent!!!

Smile 2 is a frightening and trippy experience that will leave your heart pounding. Naomi Scott just gave the best performance of the year and I truly hope she’s recognized for it!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Strange Darling” in Theaters: Love Hurts in this Captivating Cat-and-Mouse Thriller

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“Are you a serial killer?”

Strange Darling released in theaters on August 23rd 2024. The American thriller film stars Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, and Barbara Hershey. It runs for approximately an hour and thirty-six minutes.

A one night stand spirals out of control into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree.

Here is the trailer:

Strange Darling is a dangerously fun and inventive thrill ride featuring two worthy performances. Is it worthy of YOUR next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Magenta Light Studios

Willa Fitzgerald gives her best performance to date!

I’ve been a fan of hers since she starred on MTV’s Scream series, but this was something truly special. She went all out with her performance and it deserves to be talked about for a very long time. She was PERFECTION in this role.

I reserved my ticket for Kyle Gallner and he was nothing short of remarkable per usual. He’s been starring in a lot of unique horror gems lately and it was great to see him in this one. Keep them coming!

Images courtesy of Magenta Light Studios

The non-linear approach to revealing the story was refreshing and unique!

This was not your average thriller by any means. It had welcomed twists with edge that were revealed in such an effective way. You really had to pay attention during this one to fully appreciate it. The vignette style kept me invested, redefining expectations in horror and thriller films. I loved this approach and I think it really paid off, making this such a treat for viewers.

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Magenta Light Studios

Predictable at times.

Don’t get me wrong…there were some wild twists in this one. You should go into the film without knowing much. I didn’t watch a single trailer for this and I was the better for it. That being said, I was able to predict the twist right away. It didn’t make it any less incredible, but you can piece together everything without that much effort.

So am I in or out?

I’m in!!!

Strange Darling is a mind-blowing cinematic experience for viewers, breaking away from the mold of standard serial killer thrillers with its visionary approach.

This film is truly something special!

Spoiler-Free Review of “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix: An Enthralling and Eloquent Masterpiece

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Nobody gets away with anything…not really…”

The Fall of the House of Usher is a limited series from The Haunting of Hill House creator, Mike Flanagan that released on October 12th 2023. The supernatural horror series features eight episodes available to stream now on Netflix. It stars Bruce Greenwood, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Willa Fitzgerald, Mark Hamill, Zach Gilford, and Carl Lumbly. Each episode runs for approximately 60-65 minutes.

Siblings, Roderick and Madeline Usher, have built an empire of wealth with their prosperous, but potentially harmful company, but when their heirs all begin dying one by one, dark secrets are unlocked.

Here is the trailer:

The Fall of the House of Usher has plenty of familiar faces from The Haunting of Hill House world, but this show has a slightly different feel, shining a light on some of the most disturbing aspects of humanity. Is this series worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Netflix

A clever mix of gothic horror and whodunnit mystery.

The gothic horror elements were absolutely present in this particular series, channeling the works of Edgar Allan Poe in a modern way. The whodunnit mystery style added some charm in as well, hooking the audience completely as we watched this unfold.

By the time I got to the end of episode two, I could not stop watching this series. The episodes were on the longer side, but it never felt that way. Each one was filled with beautiful cinematography, moving performances, and welcomed nods to a classic short story that transported me back to the page. I loved that this series embraced its inspiration while still creating something chilling, thought-provoking, and shocking of its own in the process.

Images courtesy of Netflix

Exceptional performances.

Fans of The Haunting of Hill House anthology will be pleased to see several familiar faces in this entry. We also welcomed in several new actors, who did an incredible job. Overall, I was really impressed by the performances, as these characters didn’t necessarily have the heart and soul of previous ones, but they were still layered and intriguing all the same.

Stand-out performances go to the amazing Carla Gugino and Willa Fitzgerald, who dominated the screen and then some. Wow!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Netflix

Jam-packs in a lot…

I really don’t have too many cons for this series. Episode one was really over-stuffed with set-up and I was slightly overwhelmed by the time jumps, but I think the series found its way with this with the remaining episodes.

This series had a different feel from the others, highlighting characters obsessed with drugs, sex, and power, but it still resonated with me by the time I got to the end, proving to be another worthy Mike Flanagan series.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Netflix

I’m in 1000 percent!

Sheer perfection with a deliciously dark plot worth devouring.

The best show I’ve watched all year!

If you enjoyed Mike Flanagan’s previous series, you’ll find plenty to love in this new entry that isn’t afraid to take some risks along the way that certainly pay off.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Fall of the House of Usher in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Reacher” on Prime Video: Snappy One-Liners Pack a Punch

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Why does trouble always seem to find you?”

Reacher released on Prime Video on February 4th 2022 with all eight episodes available to stream now. Based on the popular book and film series, the action crime thriller show stars Alan Ritchson, Willa Fitzgerald, Malcom Goodwin, Kristin Kreuk, and Harvey Guillen. Each episode runs for approximately 47-52 minutes.

A veteran military police officer enters the small town of Margrave, only to find himself wrongfully accused of murder.

Here is the trailer:

Reacher gives fans of the book series something to cheer about, as we get plenty of hilarious one-liners mixed in with some brutal fight scenes to keep you entertained. Is the series worthy of your next watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Great balance of humor and action.

Just when I thought I had heard them all, Reacher had me chuckling at plenty of new one-liners that gave this series a fun edge. There are plenty of fight scenes to be excited about as well. If you’re looking for lots of action, you’re in the right place!

The murder investigation is also solid enough to prevent this show from becoming too stale and repetitive.

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Fun banter and chemistry between characters.

I am a big fan of Willa Fitzgerald (Scream, Dare Me) and Malcom Goodwin (iZombie, Breakout Kings). I thought that the supporting characters had a charm of their own and they had a really great dynamic with Reacher.

There are plenty of moments in-between the action that are entertaining because the interaction is genuine without taking itself too seriously.

More please!

The Cons:

Images courtesy of Prime Video

Some melodramatic fluff to deal with…

The overall pacing of the series is decent even though the episodes are on the longer side. However, there are some moments that slow down the series a little bit. We get some melodramatic fluff and some over-acting from the some of the minor characters. This wasn’t enough to change my opinion of the show, but I preferred the action and banter scenes.

So am I in or out?

Images courtesy of Prime Video

I’m in!

Reacher delivers with plenty of action and humor to keep you invested from start to finish!

I’m excited that season two has already been confirmed and I think that fans of the book series will truly enjoy this one!

My performance of the week ending 1/11/20 on TV goes to…

Marlo Kelly as Beth Cassidy on USA Network’s Dare Me.

There’s a new mean girl in town and she can already give Regina George and Heather Chandler a run for their money.  Throw in some over-competitive cheerleading, dark secrets, obsession, and a possible murder, and she may just be crowned the new Queen Bee.

**Please note spoilers have been left out for your convenience.**

Dare Me has aired two episodes so far and I am already completely captivated by Beth Cassidy, played brilliantly by Marlo Kelly.  While a lot of the other characters have potential as well, there is something almost magnetic about Beth. Her wide eye stares and dangerous actions make her a potential modern day femme fatale, but there’s also several layers beneath this tough appearance.

Beth clearly has a weakness for her best friend, but we all know that obsession can be a deadly game, especially when someone gets in her way.  While the cheesy montages are a little bit much, Marlo nails every scene with unsettling perfection.  This may be her break-out role because she is destined for stardom.

In addition, Beth clearly has some family issues going on.  Her father moved in with his mistress across the street and their daughter is also on the squad, which causes even more drama during games and practice.  Being on top of the pyramid is not just a privilege…it’s a necessity, and Beth is willing to take out the competition while keeping a smile planted on her face.

Beth is already set up to face off against our main protagonist, Coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald), but will she be able to put her personal agenda aside for the good of the team?  I personally am looking forward to more interactions between these two because the tension is intense.

Coach Colette French does not initially seem to be intimidated by Beth, but she is not an ordinary teenage girl.  There is clearly this jealousy and rage brewing inside of Beth, but she is able to appear so calm and in control on the surface.  Sometimes, that can be even more dangerous; however, as Beth even keeps certain secrets from her best friend, Addy.  Beth is manipulative and calculating and yet we can’t turn away from her.

Marlo Kelly fearlessly embraces this beautiful dark role with perfect poise.  She is a scene stealer for sure and the main reason why I keep coming back for more every single week.

What’s next for Beth?  Well, there is this mystery unfolding slowly week after week and you have to wonder if Beth is behind a possible crime, but is she the obvious choice?  Beth has already demonstrated that she is not afraid to break the rules to get what she wants, but how far will she go?

I can’t wait to find out!

Stay tuned for a recognized performance on TV each week!

Have a performance on TV that you think is simply outstanding? Feel free to contact me with your nomination for the week by Friday at midnight!

Spoiler-Free Review of “Dare Me” on USA Network: Dark Sensational Potential with Spirit Fingers

**This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!**

“Cheerleading equals death,” according to Torrance’s hilarious younger brother in Bring It On and he may have been spot on when it comes to USA Network’s new teen drama.  Teenage girls can be dangerous, especially when the captain’s spot on her beloved squad is threatened, as secrets slither into the open, luring us into a promising slow burn thriller.

After watching the Pilot episode, the show already reminds me of Bring It On combined with some dark cult comedy greats like Heathers and Jawbreaker, which could be the formula for a fantastic new show.

Dare Me is based on the novel of the same name by Megan Abbott, following the plot of a cheerleader who seeks revenge on the squad that betrayed her.  The show premiered on the USA Network on December 29th 2019 and will feature 10 weekly episodes.  It stars Willa Fitzgerald (Scream), Marlo Kelly, Herizen Guardiola, Erika Prevost, and Taveeta Szymanowicz.

The show seems like it may have been better suited for a slot on Freeform and a mid-season premiere can be problematic, but the show could be a diamond in the rough.

Does Dare Me do enough to capture our full attention in its Pilot episode?  Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Dare Me USA Network 1
Images courtesy of USA Network

Strong and interesting characters.

I am already a fan of Willa Fitzgerald and she is definitely making waves as the new coach of this cheerleading squad.  Marlo Kelly is also proving to be quite the scene stealer as the mean girl captain with a bitter sweet tooth for revenge.  More please!

Cheerleading can be brutal.

I absolutely love the concept of this show and we are immersed into a competitive world where these girls will do anything to be the one on top of the pyramid.  The dark and sadistic hints are enough to hold my attention, as we begin to explore the secrets leading up to some kind of unspeakable crime.

I have a lot of questions already, but that just means this show is doing a good job of keeping me invested so far.

The Cons:

Dare Me USA Network 2
Images courtesy of USA Network

Super long montages and lots of fluff.

The show is already coming across as a slow burn thriller, which means we will need to invest some time into it before we get any major reveals.  There is a lot of set-up in the pilot episode to really introduce everything, but I could have done without the numerous montages.  Seriously, it seemed like they were endless.

So am I in or out?

Dare Me USA Network 3
Images courtesy of USA Network

I’m in for now, but I’m not completely convinced as of yet.  The show has a lot of promise and potential to become something truly dark and magnificent, but I just need things to speed up slightly so that I don’t lose interest too quickly.

When a show airs weekly episodes, they need to do enough to keep viewers coming back and I think they have, but we need to keep up the pace and introduce more dark secrets involving this major crime to prevent us from losing interest.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Dare Me in the comments section below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Younger” season 6 episode 3: “We Will Just Have to Eat It”

Happy Thursday TV fans!  After watching TV Land’s Younger season 6 episode 3, I realized that integrity is important, but sometimes it’s not as simple as clearing your name.  So do you “eat it,” as Kelsey so eloquently put it, or do you find another way to spin the scam?  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Unusual Suspect,” Quinn’s book is making its way up the best seller list, but there is something fishy going on.  Meanwhile, Maggie finds a potential new romance, Josh adjusts to fatherhood, and Liza and Charles spice things up with an interesting role play.  My top 5 moments from Younger season 6 episode 3 are:

5

“I haven’t been able to look at her since the incident.”

In this episode, Maggie gets some well deserved screen time and has clearly been traumatized after helping Clare while she was in labor.  Lauren tries to help Maggie get through this and brings her to some kind of therapy group for this very thing, but it looks like this was the right call, as Maggie meets a new potential romantic interest named Beth.  Beth informs Maggie that she “also teaches privates” and it looks like Maggie is ready to take her up on this offer.  We’ll have to see how this new romance unfolds, but I’m happy for Maggie.

4

“I guess I need to listen to episode 7.”

Everyone is obsessed over the trending podcast, Exonerated, as Liza and Kelsey prepare to meet with Audrey Colbert, played by the wonderful Willa Fitzgerald for all of you Scream fans out there!  Audrey is definitely a little off and is pitching her book to Millennial, but she needs to be convinced that Liza and Kelsey believe that she is innocent of murder.

Liza and Charles also spice things up, as they act out different scenarios in the podcast, leading to some interesting role plays, but I’m always happy to see an episode that features some Charliza time.  Still swooning over this!  Liza actually plays the femme fatale very well, so Charles better look out when it comes to his new business deal!

3

“Clare…will you…?

So I’ll admit it, when I first saw the preview for episode 3, I thought Josh was going to propose to Clare and I didn’t like it at all!  I’m glad this did not happen, as Josh realizes that they are not right for each other.  I think it’s so amazing that they are going to raise their baby together, but Josh realizes that they need to keep the romance out of it, which is the right call in my opinion.

Josh gets down on one knee and says, “Clare…will you divorce me?”  It looks like Clare is on board, but what does this mean for Josh’s romantic life?  We know that there are still feelings floating around for Liza, but will he continue to pursue this or is there someone else catching his eye?

2

“You and Zane…again?!”

I mean, it’s not like I mind Kelsey and Zane getting together again, as I absolutely adore these two together!  Kelsey bumps into Zane at the liquor store and thinks that he is pretending about having a new job.  Zane continues to turn on the charisma and invites Kelsey to help him drink the bottle he just bought.  It looks like things are definitely on again for this couple, but Zane is about to shake things up when Kelsey finds out about his actual new job.  Drama!

1

“A messy bitch who lives for drama.”

That’s our girl Kelsey and we adore her for it!  After Quinn’s book continues to climb on the best seller list, Kelsey discovers that Quinn bought her books in bulk, which resulted in a dagger next to her name at number one.  It’s a scam and Kelsey is not ready to take the fall for this.  Kelsey initially thinks about coming clean and placing the blame on Quinn, but Liza gives her some great advice and reminds her that she is their investor and she can’t throw an author under the bus.

Kelsey proves to be someone you do not want to mess with when she is asked about the bulk sales during an interview.  With perfect poise, she explains that the books were bought for speaking events and decides to announce Quinn’s intent to run for senate earlier than Quinn had intended.  Quinn is clearly not pleased with this, but no one puts our girl Kelsey in a corner!

Things are looking up, but Kelsey soon discovers that Audrey is actually going to go with a new publishing company named Mercury.  We learn that Zane is the editor, but they start to wonder about where he got all that money, as a light bulb goes off in Liza’s head, realizing Charles’s connection to all of this.  I can’t wait to see what happens next here!  Stay tuned!  New episodes return July 10th!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own theories and thoughts on Younger below in the comments section.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!
