My performance of the week ending 6/22/19 on TV goes to…

Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones on Netflix’s Jessica Jones, season 3.  Even though I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed with season 3 and the end of the series, there was one redeeming light that kept my attention and that is the talented and captivating Krysten Ritter.  Please note that I have not included any major spoilers for your convenience.  I have always been a fan of Krysten Ritter, but she really found her perfect role in this series, as she embraced it completely and really nailed the conflicted character.  Even though Jessica sometimes comes off abrasive, Krysten still makes her incredibly charming and brings a likability to her, as you find yourself sympathizing with her circumstances.

Jessica has been through so much, but she still tries to repair and hold on to her friendship with her adoptive sister, Trish, but that proves to be quite the challenge in season 3.  A lot of the episodes in season 3 moved incredibly slow and it felt like more of an obligation for me to watch, but I continued to be impressed by Krysten’s performance and it is worth mentioning here.  Unfortunately Krysten couldn’t save the show enough to make this an entertaining watch for me, but I am still a fan and I can’t wait to see what role she takes on next!

What’s next for Jessica Jones?  Well not much, since this is the end of the Marvel series on Netflix, but I am somewhat pleased with how they left the end of the show, deciding not to leave us with any loose ends that will continue to bother me later.  I won’t give any spoilers here, but I think that Jessica Jones has been battling her own inner conscience for the entire series, which has been far from easy for her.  While she previously just accepted being broken in some episodes, she does try to do the right thing, which makes her a reluctant hero, but a hero nonetheless. And I think that’s why we can all relate to her so much.  She’s an everyday hero who has to deal with her own struggles in her life, but she still tries to make a difference.

If you do decide to sit through season 3, you will see Jessica and Trish’s views clash on how to make things right, which comes down to one’s moral compass.  Sometimes it seems like the answer is to run away, but Jessica ultimately decides to face a lot of her problems head on, which makes me root for her that much more.  Even though we are saying goodbye to Jessica Jones, I think it’s important to recognize Krysten Ritter’s performance throughout the series.  Krysten really elevated the show and mesmerized me with her portrayal again and again.  Bravo!

My performance of the week ending 6/15/19 on TV goes to…

Richard Harmon as John Murphy on The 100.  He may fly under the radar sometimes, but one should never underestimate John Murphy, played brilliantly by the charismatic Richard Harmon.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  Murphy has always been a survivor, but he doesn’t always make the most popular decisions.  We have witnessed a huge character transformation; however, as the selfish and conniving character has truly become an anti-hero that you desperately want to root for.

Even though Bellamy maintains the moral compass for the group, Murphy is always one step ahead and proves to be smart and strategic with his plans.  You never know what you are going to get with Murphy, as he can easily switch sides, but that’s what makes me love his character.  He’s essentially a con man, but he is so smooth and convincing and he knows how to adapt in every situation, making him one of the most compelling characters on the series for me.

In season 6, Murphy saw something when he died for a few moments, which has clearly made him uneasy.  We still don’t know exactly what he saw, but it has kicked his survival instinct into high gear.  Murphy is never afraid to say what everyone else is thinking and he doesn’t care who he pisses off.  Josephine Lightbourne may think that she has everything under control with her own manipulation, but she should watch out.  Even though she has been around for a very long time, she is no match for John Murphy, who “takes big swings” and plays an impressive game for sure!

What’s next for Murphy? I’m not sure, but it will be interesting to see which side he ends up on.  Murphy seems intrigued by the idea of immortality, but he has gone through so much with Bellamy and the others and I have a hard time believing that he will turn his back on them completely.  Murphy is always a wild card, but he is so entertaining to watch and Richard Harmon’s portrayal of him is incredible.  It’s not always easy playing the bad guy, but he does so with flair and I have been a fan of his since the very first season.  I can’t wait to see what he does next!

My performance of the week ending 6/8/19 on TV goes to…

Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia Clark on Fear the Walking Dead.  As the last Clark standing, our girl Alicia has gone through so much and yet she is now even stronger than before, emerging as a true leader and someone our characters can count on.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  In the season 5 premiere, Alicia proves just how bad-ass she is.  She works so well with Morgan and the two have formed quite the dynamic duo, taking out walkers left and right, but there is something so magnetic about Alicia.  It’s almost like she has just become the slayer or chosen one in the Walking Dead universe and walkers everywhere better watch out!

I was blown away by Alycia’s performance in season 4, as she really dug deep to unravel the emotions and grief going on within Alicia Clark, but I love that she is continuing to grow more and more as the show goes on.  Alicia is smart and aware of her surroundings, recognizing the potential for threats and bad omens even more so than Morgan, who always wants to find the silver lining in every scenario.  Her mother, Madison, would be so proud of her, as she has really embraced the role of a leader, which is no easy task.

What’s next for Alicia? I’m not sure, but it will be interesting to see how the dynamic shifts once Dwight arrives.  Alicia always has her guard up and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as she is always looking at things from every angle.  These new potential enemies better look out because our girl is not messing around.  There is a sense of empowerment surging through Alicia Clark and I think she may have just become one of my favorite characters on television.  I can’t wait to see what she does next!

My performance of the week ending 6/1/19 on TV goes to…

Eliza Taylor as Clarke Griffin on The 100. I have always been such a fan of Eliza’s portrayal of Clarke, but she just took things to the next level, while channeling her inner Josephine.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  In season 6 episode 5, Clarke still looks like Clarke, except Josephine Lightbourne has now inhabited her body, claiming that Clarke is gone for good.  Whether this is true or not, Clarke/Josephine is ready to let loose and have some fun.

Clarke has always tried to be such a strong leader and sometimes she has had to make tough decisions to help save the world, but it’s almost like that weight has now been lifted off of her shoulders, as she lets her hair down and dances around to music.  Maybe this is what the real Clarke actually needs, but we know that Josephine is extremely dangerous and a potentially formidable foe.  Either way, it was really fun to see this sassy and seductive side of Eliza, almost like she has now embraced a completely new character and I was impressed and entertained by her range as an actress.

What’s next for Clarke/Josephine? Bellamy has already discovered the truth and the Bellarke fan in me knows that he will do everything in his power to help free Clarke, but Murphy is a wild card for sure.  Immortality is filled with so many possibilities, but let’s hope that there is a way to save our girl Clarke.  In the meantime, I’m kind of enjoying this villainess emerging and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

My performance of the week ending 5/25/19 on TV goes to…

Kit Harington as Jon Snow on Game of Thrones.  Jon Snow has always been my favorite character on the show, but I was worried that his character was losing himself by bending the knee.  However, he dug deep within to do the impossible, recognizing that sacrifice is sometimes required to protect the world.  Please note spoilers are ahead.  In the series finale, Jon witnesses the aftermath of the Mad Queen’s decision and is horrified by the results.  Jon has seen a lot of terrible things over the seasons, but he does understand right from wrong and realizes that he is the only one who can truly get close enough to Daenerys to do something about it.

When Jon tells Daenerys that she will always be his Queen, my heart instantly shattered, as I watched him swiftly take her life, eliminating the threat once and for all.  However, this may be the hardest thing that Jon has ever had to do and he is willing to deal with the consequences of his actions.  Kit Harington’s performance was incredible here, as I was emotionally moved and devastated.

Jon is ready to face his punishment and is banished back to the Night’s Watch, almost bringing his journey completely full circle.  Jon may not be the King, but he has proven his worth and his destiny and purpose is far from over.  Winter is forever, as Jon returns to the north and is reunited with his wolf, Ghost, which was the most rewarding scene for me personally.

Jon has always been somewhat of a lone wolf himself and an outsider, since he was brought up thinking he was a bastard, but he’s so much more than this.  He’s brave and selfless and I wish I could continue following his journey because I know that he is not done doing great things.  It breaks my heart that he had to eliminate the woman he loved, as Jon deserves happiness, but his reunion with Ghost assures me that he’ll never be truly alone.

I’ve fallen in love with Jon Snow over the years and I am grateful to Kit Harington for his portrayal, truly bringing his character to life for me.  Kit will always be “Jon Snow” to me even when he takes on other roles and that just shows that he really embraced this role and put his complete effort forward, which was absolutely incredible to watch.  Thank you Kit Harington and maybe Jon Snow does know something after all!

My performance of the week ending 5/18/19 on TV goes to…

Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale. I have been waiting for Cheryl to snap out of this cult obsessed trance for a while now and it finally happened, revealing the Cheryl “Bombshell” that we all know and adore.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  In the season 3 finale, Cheryl finally realizes that everything is now up to her.  She needs to save her friends from the Farm while also trying to help Betty before it is too late and she does not disappoint.  Cheryl provides us with humor, sassy attitude, and her trusty bow and arrow, reminding us that she never misses a target.  Watch out!

While I adore the relationship between Cheryl and Toni, I really wanted to see Cheryl break out of her shell and re-embrace her own identity.  She gets the chance to do that in the season 3 finale, as she reveals courage and strength, coming face-to-face with one of her greatest fears.  It’s amazing that Cheryl can be so incredibly traumatized, and rightfully so, but still push that aside to help her friends, which reminds us that she is extremely loyal.

Cheryl is typically thought of as a supporting character outside of the core 4:  Jughead, Betty, Archie, and Veronica.  However, for me, she absolutely stole the show.  While there were plenty of intense moments for all of our characters, I was rooting for Cheryl the entire time, as she became the unlikely hero of the day for me.

What’s next for Cheryl?  It was unlikely that Cheryl would come out of everything completely unscathed, as we see her welcoming home her brother Jason at the end of the episode, keeping his corpse with her at home.  Cheryl has had to process so much and she just discovered that her mother is the true Gargoyle King, which is enough to drive anyone over the edge.  However, this combined with the drama she faced at the Farm, along with discovering her brother’s body, has clearly taken its toll.  I am sure that this will be explored more in season 4 and hopefully Toni or Nana Rose can snap her back to reality.  I personally can’t wait to see what she does next!

My performance of the week ending 5/11/19 on TV goes to…

Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones. I have always been impressed with Emilia’s portrayal of Daenerys, but her character is truly being tested again and again in these last episodes.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  Daenerys has had to deal with so much and she has truly earned the titles of:  Khaleesi and Mother of Dragons, as she continues to break chains, inspiring hope where there is none.  I guess that’s why I was so frustrated seeing her presented as a “Mad Queen” now who is no longer fit to rule the Iron Throne according to some.

While I adore Jon Snow and feel that he has so many good leadership qualities, I cannot ignore the journey that Daenerys has been on.  She was left to burn and die in a fire and emerged as a hero with three dragons instead.  Everything about her character screams destiny and I can’t stop rooting for her even if I don’t always agree with all of her decisions.  But isn’t that part of the challenge of being a good leader?  Not everyone is going to agree with you, but it was aggravating to see some of her loyal advisors now questioning if she is the right ruler.

Whether you agree that she is the rightful ruler or not, I have been beyond impressed by Emilia’s performances, as she is channeling so many emotions at once.  Daenerys’s grief is overwhelming, but yet she is still trying to be so strong for her people, but will this turn her on a path toward revenge?  Cersei can really bring out the worst in others, but I’m hoping that Daenerys will channel that rage in a productive way.

What’s next for Daenerys?  I’m not sure who will end up on the Iron Throne, but I would ultimately love to see her and Jon Snow rule together.  I know that this may not be possible and others have said that she is “too strong” for him, but sometimes balance and compromise is necessary for good leadership.  I’m interested to see how it all ends, but I have continued to be impressed with Daenerys again and again and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

My performance of the week ending 5/4/19 on TV goes to…

Maisie Williams as Arya Stark on Game of Thrones. I don’t think that I have ever cheered so much for a character on television in my life.  However, when I watched Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3, Arya had my undivided attention.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.  All of Arya’s scenes had me on the edge of my seat.  Watching her fight the White Walkers was incredible and her character embodied female empowerment, but to a new level.  While some of the other male characters hid in the corner or gave up, Arya refused to back down and continued to fight.  Her father and Syrio Forel would be more than proud!

What Do we say to the god of death.gif

Maisie’s performance went viral on social media, as many fans began posting with the #NotToday hashtag.  Melisandre reminded Arya of Syrio Forel’s teachings when she asked her, “What do we say to the God of Death?” which brought everything full circle for Arya.  All of the lessons and everything that Arya has been through brought her to this very moment, as she now faces her most difficult challenge yet.

I love that Arya didn’t triumph with mere strength.  Rather, she uses her wit and her skills to outsmart her opponents, proving to be more than worthy of being the one to get that game winning shot later on in the episode.  Arya is a hero and she has been one of my favorite characters on the show since the very beginning.  She has grown up so much and I feel like we have all been there every step of the way, watching her mature and transform into a powerful warrior with a fire within her that cannot be put out.

What’s next for Arya?  I’m not sure, but I can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction to her victory.  Arya really did save the day, but the fight is not even close to being over, as we still need to tackle the fight for the Iron Throne.  It looks like it may be time for Daenerys to face off against Cersei, but one should never underestimate our girl and my hero, Arya Stark!  I can’t wait to see how it all ends!

My performance of the week ending 4/27/19 on TV goes to…

Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Alexander Calvert, and Misha Collins as Sam, Dean, Jack, and Castiel on Supernatural. I was absolutely blown away by their performances in the season 14 finale and I have to give the performance of the week to all four of these amazing actors because they really pulled out all the stops.  The season finale left us with a major cliffhanger and SPN fans everywhere are wondering what the final season will look like, but I have to take a moment to talk about the growth of some of our favorite characters and the incredible performances of the cast.  Please note some spoilers are ahead.

Let’s start with Sam.  Jared Padalecki is always so brilliant and Sam has really been making me cry lately.  I love that Sam always tries to see the good in everyone.  He knows that he needs to make difficult decisions, but they continue to weigh on him, which makes me connect so much to his character.

Dean has been through so much in season 14 and he has shut down on more than one occasion.  However, Dean has a truly significant moment in the season finale when he decides not to follow through with eliminating Jack.  Unlike Sam, Dean is always prepared to do what is necessary and he seems to be first in line to sacrifice himself even when he should stop and think for a moment, playing the role of big brother.  However, Dean truly takes a minute to think about his actions, as he also considers what his mother may think, which really helped develop his character even more.  Jensen never disappoints!

Castiel has grown so much from his first appearance on the show and Misha Collins continues to impress me with his portrayal of Cass.  Sure, Castiel may bring on the laughs, but he also wants goodness to prevail, refusing to give up hope even when it seems like all hope is gone.  Castiel’s father-son relationship with Jack is so beautiful and real and I think it has really made such an incredible impact on his own character, realizing what life is all about.

When Jack lost his soul, my heart broke because there has always been such an innocence and naivete to Jack, played brilliantly by Alexander Calvert.  Jack’s spiral into darkness is that much more heartbreaking because of this, especially when we know that Sam, Dean, and Castiel are his real family.  When Dean points the gun at Jack, he tells Dean that he understands, which is such an important moment for him.  Even though Jack feels empty and different, he knows what his family has to do and he accepts his fate, proving that he is still capable of so many great things, but we’ll have to see if his fate is sealed or not.

What’s next for our favorite characters?  I’m not sure, but I can’t wait for season 15 to premiere.  It will be bitter sweet for me, as I have grown up watching these characters and I consider them to be a part of my own family.  While I always knew that the show would one day come to an end, it doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking.  However, the show will also live on for me and I will continue to be thankful for witnessing such incredible performances over the years.  I can’t wait to see how it all ends!

My performance of the week ending 4/20/19 on TV goes to…

Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper on Riverdale. Lili brings such a fire to Betty’s character.  I love how she takes on all the adults in town and is never afraid to follow her instincts.  I’ve always loved the character of Nancy Drew and Lili brings me right back to that nostalgia with her portrayal of Betty Cooper.  Betty is smart, resourceful, and extremely loyal.  She will do anything to protect her family and friends and she is not about to let Edgar or Evelyn Evernever get in her way.

Even though Betty may have a darkness brewing inside her, sometimes this is necessary, as long as she can channel it.  It gives her the drive and passion to keep going, as she becomes so motivated and determined.  One should never underestimate Betty Cooper.  Just when you think you may have her all figured out, she surprises you and reminds you that there are so many layers to her character.

What’s next for Betty?  We’ll have to stay tuned to find out, but she made a very difficult decision when she let her mother go.  Whether it was the right decision or not, Betty proves to be selfless in this moment, as she puts Alice’s needs before her own.  I am worried about her visits with her father, Hal, as this can cause her darkness to reach the surface.  Betty may be her “father’s daughter,” but she is so much more than that.

I think that she has the potential to unmask the Gargoyle King and to take down the Farm.  She’s not afraid to to do what is necessary to uncover the truth.  However, I think that it’s important that Betty keeps her connections with her friends and family steady.  Having Jughead, Toni, and Veronica in her corner can really help her and it will also keep her darkness in check.  I can’t wait to see what she does next!
