Ranking the top 5 moments from “The Purge” season 1 episode 3: “Everybody has the Urge to Purge”

Happy Wednesday TV fans!  After watching the USA network’s The Purge season 1 episode 3 last night, the voice over reminded us that “everyone has the urge to purge.”  However, when you stand behind your beliefs in the midst of all of this chaos and destruction, the urge is replaced by strength.  And “because you had the strength and the courage and fortitude to face your fears, all your dreams will come true.”  While I’m not sure that this is necessarily true, it’s important to remember what matters most, even when we are faced with temptation all around us.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch the latest episode yet.  In last night’s episode, “The Urge to Purge,” Penelope learns that she is up next to “step into the invisible,” but Miguel is not giving up on his quest to find her.  Meanwhile, Jenna reveals another secret, Rick has a momentary lapse of judgment, and Alison tries to prove to Jane why she should be promoted above Mark.  My top 5 moments from The Purge season 1 episode 3 are:

5

“I know you felt it.”

After Lila and Jenna continue kissing in secret, Lila stares at Jenna with loving eyes and tells her, “I’m sorry but I had to.”  She reminds Jenna that she knows she felt it, which seems to be spot on, as Jenna clearly wears her heart on her sleeve and has some kind of feelings swirling around for Lila.  However, Jenna reveals another secret and tells Lila that she is pregnant.  Lila congratulates her, but doesn’t seem ready to give up just yet.  Will more secrets continue to unravel between Lila, Jenna, and Rick?  We’ll have to stay tuned, but it appears that Purge Night is revealing more than just the “urge to purge.”

“It is your turn to walk through that door and give.”

During the episode, Penelope and the other cult members on the bus are still upset by Melissa’s meltdown when it was her turn.  The good leader turns to Penelope to inspire the others.  Penelope explains “That is our gift.  Tonight we give so that tomorrow the world will be a better place.”  Her words seem true enough and the rest of the bus begin chanting with her, “we walk arm and arm toward peace and love for united we can conquer all.”  We also flashback to Penelope and Miguel’s past and see them as children, building a pillow fort with their father.  We learn that this was right before “The First Purge,” and their parents were approached with money to merely stay at home, even though they said they had no interest in purging themselves.  Penelope soon learns that it is her time to “step into the invisible,” and she tries to remain strong and says, “I hope I make my family proud too.”  While Penelope is still misguided, she has been trying to fill the void from her parent’s death for quite some time, searching for a place to belong.  While Miguel channeled his loss by joining the Marines and helping others, Penelope seems to have had a much more difficult time adjusting.

3

“Let’s celebrate!”

During the party, Rick is called in to discuss final negotiations and Jenna is asked to come join them as well.  Even though Jenna is the creative part of the team, she does an excellent job explaining the purpose of their project and even talks about the importance of giving the extra profit back to the poor, trying to make a difference with those less fortunate.  After a deal is made, their new partner, Mr. Stanton, suggests that they “celebrate.”  He brings in a former employee who betrayed him who is gagged and tied up.  Rick and Jenna look at the man in horror, realizing what they have just gotten themselves into.  Mr. Stanton offers his guests the chance to purge and Rick initially takes the gun from him.  Before anyone can pull the trigger, Jenna quickly explains, “We don’t do this.”  Mr. Stanton says he understands and shoots the man right in front of them.  Jenna later tells Rick that she wants out, but Rick reminds her that this is a deal of a lifetime.  Jenna asks Rick if he was going to really pull the trigger and he says no, but it seems like there was definitely a moment of weakness there.  Is there darkness in Rick waiting to be released?  Rick tells Jenna, “we can’t change the purge but we can change our lives,” but at what cost?

“So do you notify HR about my promotion or is that on me?”

During the episode, Jane continues to have second thoughts about hiring a proxy to take out her boss, David.  Jane announces that they closed the deal, but still remains distracted.  The group wants to celebrate after closing the deal, but Jane reminds them not to do anything too crazy since it is Purge Night and all.  Later on, Mark approaches Jane and thanks her for being such a great mentor to him.  He explains that he understands if she will be choosing Alison for the promotion above him, but is ready to continue to work hard until it is his turn.  Mark’s turn will never come about; however, as Jane soon realizes that Alison and Mark left the secure floor.  To Jane’s horror, she walks in on Alison brutally stabbing Mark with a pair of scissors.  While Jane is in shock, asking Alison what she has done, Alison stares at her mechanically and brushes the blood off of her, asking about her promotion and who will be informing HR.  Alison eliminated the competition with no remorse or guilt, tapping into her own “urge to purge.”  After witnessing this, it’s safe to say that Jane will probably try to call her proxy off, but we know that there will definitely be consequences to this.  Is Jane ready to face them?

“He’s persistent.  That’s for sure.”

Miguel continues to try and get “Pete the Cop” to tell him where the bus is.  He is initially turned down, but Pete sees potential in Miguel.  Miguel offers him his car in exchange for the information and Pete is absolutely impressed by Miguel’s 1971 Chevelle SS and says, “This car has balls.”  Pete agrees to help Miguel and shows him where the bus is going and even sends two men in a van to get him closer to the location.  The men in the van explain that they are documenting the purge, trying to make a difference, but Miguel seems unconvinced.  Miguel is still clearly impacted by the death of his parents and we flash back to the past again.  Miguel’s father was killed when he tried to defend his home, but reminded Miguel to “protect her always,” meaning Penelope.  Miguel and Penelope were told to hide in the closet by their mother and they witnessed her killed right before their eyes.  Miguel says that his sister is all he has left in the world, as he tries to honor his promise to his father even now.  Miguel crosses paths with “The Nuns” who eerily point in the direction of the bus when confronted by Miguel.  When Miguel gets to the bus, he learns that he just missed Penelope and now has to find “The Nuns” before they turn Penelope into some kind of martyr to further their twisted agenda.  Miguel’s journey is far from over, but I am rooting for him all the way.  Stay tuned!

When Kallie Bennett, a jaded teenage girl plagued by her alcoholic mother and her peers molded out of sheer bubble gum perfection, chases after Alice in Wonderland herself, she ends up lost in her own version of Wonderland, which forces her to face her utmost fears and introduces her to familiar characters with a dark twist. Among these characters is Ches, a gorgeous vampire with a conflicted conscience, who becomes Kallie’s guide and blossoming love interest. She also crosses paths with Queen Hartley, a manipulative witch who has the power to strip away one’s memories and imagination, which brings a bone chilling new meaning to “off with their heads.” In The Search for Alice, Kallie starts to realize that her Wonderland is just as frightening as her own reality and that she cannot always run away from her problems. She must figure out a way to defeat Queen Hartley and return home before it is too late, but she soon learns that escaping Wonderland means leaving Ches behind forever.
