Spoiler-Free Review of “The Resort” on Demand: Island horror leaves a lot to be desired

*This is a spoiler-free review so feel free to read on!*

“That was the last time I felt truly safe…”

The Resort is a horror film that released on April 30th 2021 on demand and in limited theaters. The film stars Bianca Haase, Michelle Randolph, Brock O’Hurn and Michael Vlamis. It runs for approximately 75 minutes.

The film centers around a writer obsessed with the paranormal who decides to go on a trip to Hawaii with her friends to investigate an abandoned resort that is supposedly haunted by a ghost called the Half-Faced Girl. When they arrive, they are in paradise, but things soon take a dark turn.

Here is the trailer:

The Resort has the potential to lure us in with some guilty pleasure island terror paired with some jaw-dropping gorgeous scenery. But is this film truly worth a watch? Let’s find out…

The Pros:

Gorgeous scenery and a gorgeous cast.

The movie is filmed in Maui, Hawaii and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. I love anything that has to do with Hawaii so this was a major plus for me and we also had a gorgeous cast to go along with it.

I also thought that the premise was good and I wanted to know more about the history behind the abandoned resort and the haunting there.

The Cons:

Bad acting.

Like, really bad. The cast is almost too gorgeous and I felt like the people making this movie suddenly realized just how terrible they were at acting and decided to throw in random skinny-dipping scenes for fluff just to kill some time and the movie only runs for an hour and fifteen minutes…

Not scary at all and a terrible plot.

I really wanted to like this movie. It had the perfect premise and I was thinking I might get a mix of A Perfect Getaway and Club Dread. There was some humor sprinkled in and the beginning was not that bad even with the terrible acting, but once the plot took off, things just got beyond awful.

While there is some gore and attempts at channeling some Evil Dead vibes, this film fails to execute every single one of its scares and the twist at the end was laughable, but this is not coded as a horror comedy so it makes me wonder what the writers were thinking here.

At least the movie was short, otherwise I would have stopped watching it much sooner…

So am I in or out?

I’m out on this one…

Unfortunately the gorgeous backdrop of Hawaii could not save this awful horror movie. Don’t waste your money on this one. I would recommend checking it out just to see how terrible it is when it airs at like 4 am on basic cable or is available to stream for free.

The plot was just horrendous and laughable and perhaps this would have been better if it took a page out of Club Dread’s book and went full horror comedy.

If you are looking for some island terror, check out A Perfect Getaway or Fantasy Island instead.

I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Resort in the comments section below. Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Killing Eve” season 2 episode 4: “Desperate Times”

Happy Monday TV fans!  After watching BBC America’s Killing Eve season 2 episode 4 on AMC, I started thinking about the song, “Reflection,” in the movie Mulan, where she sings:  “When will my reflection show who I am inside?”  It seemed fitting and it’s interesting to see how much the dynamic is shifting between Eve and Villanelle.  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “Desperate Times,” Villanelle puts on a show and tries to win back Eve’s attention.  Meanwhile, Eve continues to put the pieces together surrounding Alistair Peel, leading her to the new female assassin, Ghost.  My top 5 moments from Killing Eve season 2 episode 4 are:

5

“You’re the best person I know…come back.”

Eve and Niko continue to have problems in this episode, as Eve forgets to let him know that they now have security watching their home.  Eve clearly has a lot on her mind, but she continues to push Niko further and further away.  Niko reminds her that none of this is normal, even though she works for MI6, and tries to get through to her.  In a sweet moment, Niko tells Eve that she is the best person he knows and he just wants her to come back, but is Eve too far gone at this point?

4

“This is so boring!!!!!!”

You just gotta love when Jodie Comer brightens up the screen with her amazing portrayal of Villanelle.  Villanelle is in Amsterdam with Konstantin, preparing for her first job, but they decide to walk through a museum, which is beyond boring to Villanelle.  Villanelle hilariously shouts this in front of a crowd, not caring what anyone else thinks, but she is intrigued by one painting in particular and even purchases a postcard version to send to Eve.  We later see Villanelle in a gorgeous pink ensemble and a woman asks her if she can take a picture for her Instagram and Villanelle hilariously replies, “Don’t be pathetic…get a real life.”  This is why I love Villanelle.  She says what she thinks without hesitation and we still adore her anyway.  The postcard to Eve reads:

Darling Eve,

I hope you haven’t forgotten about me.

Only Carolyn intercepts the postcard before it reaches Eve.  But why is Carolyn trying to keep this from Eve?  Is there a particular reason why she wants her full attention on Ghost?  I still don’t trust Carolyn, but I’m hoping we will fill in some more blanks soon!

3

“Scorned wives and scumbags…”

Villanelle is ready to put on a show for Eve and we learn that being discreet is definitely not in her nature.  Villanelle tracks down her target and lures him into a red light district window.  Villanelle wears a pig mask and opens the curtain, as the crowd watches as she strings the man upside down.  Before killing him, Villanelle signals for some encouragement from the crowd, as they don’t understand what is really going on before she performs her final act and butchers the man in front of them.  Villanelle leaves him hanging upside down, similar to the painting in the postcard she sent to Eve, but she is beyond disappointed when Eve doesn’t show up to investigate her work of art.

2

“Do you like her watching her or do you like being watched?”

Eve continues to investigate Alistair Peel’s murder and realizes that everyone around him seems to be dying, but in natural ways.  After meeting with Alistair’s obnoxious son, Eve begins to focus her attention on Ghost and realizes that she wanted each act to be painless.  So “what kind of assassin is that?”  A light bulb goes off within Eve, as she realizes that Ghost must have previously worked in the medical field.  This is clearly exciting Eve, as she is all about the hunt, but will she forget about Villanelle now that she has Ghost on her mind?

1

Reflections…

My favorite moment of the episode is at the very end, where we go back and forth between Eve and Villanelle staring at their reflections.  Eve is getting ready to interrogate her Ghost suspect and pulls up her hair, leaving it neatly off of her face.  She stares at herself and is calm and unwavering.  After getting high and almost going off the deep end at a club, Villanelle looks at her own reflection and begins crying, which causes her to eventually smile.  Even though Villanelle feels ignored or rejected by Eve, it has brought out human emotions within her, as she taps into vulnerability inside.  It always seems like Villanelle is just trying to feel something and now she does, but what will she do about it?

Eve was always previously seen almost out of control and constantly on the move, refusing to sit still, but now she is calm and confident, suggesting that she has perhaps taken a page out of Villanelle’s book.  It’s interesting to see how these two characters are almost adapting characteristics of each other, as they continue on this twisted journey.  But what will happen when these two halves finally meet in the middle?  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Killing Eve in the comments section below.  Thanks so much for reading and happy viewing!

Ranking the top 5 moments from “Supernatural” season 14 episode 4: “Time To Slice and Dice!”

Happy Friday TV fans!  Everyone enjoys a good horror movie marathon.  Well maybe some people more than others, but what happens when the horror comes to life?  Is it your dream come true or your worst nightmare?  After watching the CW’s Supernatural season 14 episode 4, Dean pretty much indicated that this is the coolest thing ever and I agree, as this has been my favorite episode so far this season.  Supernatural did what it does best, providing us with some laugh out loud funny moments with some campy horror mixed in.  More of this please!  Please note spoilers are ahead if you have not gotten a chance to watch yet.  In last night’s episode, “Mint Condition,” Sam tries to get Dean out of his funk by telling him about a case that involves toys coming to life, which immediately grabs his brother’s attention.  As Sam and Dean try to figure out exactly what they are dealing with, they both bond with a different comic book store owner and Sam finally reveals why he hates Halloween.  My top 5 moments from Supernatural season 14 episode 4 are:

5

“Our life is a scary movie.”

In the beginning of the episode, Dean is enjoying some pizza and watching a horror movie marathon, which includes one starring “Hatchet Man” with the catch phrase, “Time to Slice and Dice!”  I have to admit that Dean was absolutely adorable in this scene, but Sam is not too impressed with Dean’s decision to stay in his room all the time.  While Dean listens to Sam, he takes this time to comment on the fact that Sam has shaved his beard.  Sam tries to get Dean to stay on track and reminds him that “our life is a scary movie.”

4

“She’s like your wonder twin.”

After Sam tells Dean about an action figure supposedly coming to life and attacking someone, Dean is in and ready for a case.  He enthusiastically says, “Thundercats…seriously!”  Sam and Dean head off to the comic book store to check things out and Dean thinks the girl owner is Sam’s wonder twin right down to her delicate features and luxurious hair.  Sam takes this time to point out the other owner in the horror section with a lollipop, suggesting that he is Dean’s double.  This joke proceeds to go even further, as both Winchester brothers spend some quality time with their “twins” and realize that they actually do have quite a bit in common.

3

“Why do you know what that means?”

Sam and Dean track down the comic book store employee who was attacked named Stuart.  Stuart is beyond hilarious, as he insists on voicing his opinions loudly to his opponent in a video game.  After trying to figure out who might have a motive to hurt Stuart, he talks about his ex-girlfriend who was into “wicca.”  When he talks about “mirl,” Dean is beyond confused and Sam explains that this means “meeting in real life.”  I laughed so hard when Dean asked Sam how he knew what that meant, keeping this episode super fun and light.  Dean suspects that a witch might be involved, but they soon find out that they are dealing with the ghost of the former owner of the comic book store who is not the biggest fan of Stuart.

2

“Unless it’s Godzilla…it’s real!”

After Dean is almost taken out by a flying chainsaw, Stuart ends up in the hospital and they decide to keep an eye on him, as the ghost is clearly targeting him.  Stuart’s best friend hangs around too and Dean starts to realize that actually do have a lot in common and are both huge fans of the “Hatchet Man” movies.  Dean explains, “I like to watch movies where I know the bad guy is going to lose,” actually shedding some light on another reason why he has been locked up in his room for so long, not ready to truly cope with what happened with Michael.  The ghost decides to possess a “Hatchet Man” animatronic and heads to the hospital, which is a thrill for Dean and his new pal.  Meanwhile, Sam bonds with the girl owner and they try and figure out how to stop the ghost once and for all and realize that they pretty much think the same way.  When “Hatchet Man” arrives, Dean grabs an ax and is ready to face his favorite horror movie villain.  Dean vs. Hatchet Man…place your bets!  This fight is absolutely hilarious, as “Hatchet Man” proceeds to press the button on his chest so that his famous catch phrases are said, which makes the battle that much more epic for Dean.  After the key-chain is destroyed, the ghost is eliminated and the threat is over, but Dean reminds us that this was absolutely awesome and I agree!

1

“Why do you hate Halloween?”

The moment we have all been waiting for is here, as Sam finally tells Dean why he hates Halloween so much.  After Sam gives Dean a pep talk on the ride back, Dean agrees to come out of his room more even though he will not be able to just erase what happened with Michael.  Now that this is resolved, Dean takes this opportunity to find out exactly why Sam hates Halloween.  After initially saying, “You don’t want to know,” Sam finally opens up and talks about a girl named Andrea he used to like and how she invited him over for a Halloween party.  Sam had been super nervous and when he had to bob for apples, he ended up puking everywhere…even on Andrea.  Sam spent the rest of the night hiding out in the woods traumatized while he waited for Dean.  Poor Sam!  Dean decides that it’s time for him to get over this and that they can dress up as a “dynamic duo” next year like Batman and Robin or perhaps Thelma and Louise, which is beyond hilarious.  Overall, this episode was extremely entertaining and I have a feeling I will continue to watch it every Halloween.  Let’s keep these episodes coming!  Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoyed the list and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on Supernatural in the comments section below.  Happy viewing!

When Kallie Bennett, a jaded teenage girl plagued by her alcoholic mother and her peers molded out of sheer bubble gum perfection, chases after Alice in Wonderland herself, she ends up lost in her own version of Wonderland, which forces her to face her utmost fears and introduces her to familiar characters with a dark twist. Among these characters is Ches, a gorgeous vampire with a conflicted conscience, who becomes Kallie’s guide and blossoming love interest. She also crosses paths with Queen Hartley, a manipulative witch who has the power to strip away one’s memories and imagination, which brings a bone chilling new meaning to “off with their heads.” In The Search for Alice, Kallie starts to realize that her Wonderland is just as frightening as her own reality and that she cannot always run away from her problems. She must figure out a way to defeat Queen Hartley and return home before it is too late, but she soon learns that escaping Wonderland means leaving Ches behind forever.
