My performance of the week ending 3/7/20 on TV goes to…

Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison on Showtime’s Homeland season 8.

As I continue to watch the final season of Homeland, it’s important to recognize and celebrate Claire Danes for her brilliant performances week after week. She has done so much more than merely becoming Carrie Mathison…she IS Carrie Mathison and she will forever be a legend because of it.

**Please note some spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series.**

Homeland is always jam-packed with quite a lot each episode and you really have to be in the right frame of mind to watch the show, but it continues to captivate my undivided attention and if I start to drift off for even a moment, Carrie Mathison brings me right back.

While Carrie has displayed a million emotions over the seasons, I really prefer the Carrie who wants to get to the truth. Her board of theories and her drive to analyze every angle is beyond inspiring. She risks it all for her country, but she also has quite a few layers and blocks in her memory that make her even more of a dynamic character.

Sometimes Carrie is unsure if she can trust herself, but we know that her intentions are typically good. Does she get carried away sometimes? Absolutely, but I think it is a constant struggle for her to balance all of her intense emotions. She uses that intensity to be a major asset at her job, but it also takes a toll on her, as the rest of her emotions spiral out of control…especially when she is off her meds.

Each episode in season 8 has been absolutely fantastic so far. In season 8, episode 4, Carrie risks it all to help a woman in trouble. She doesn’t stress about following protocol or getting approval. She simply makes a decision based on her gut, understanding that doing the right thing doesn’t always follow the rule book.

What’s next for Carrie? Well, I imagine quite a lot after that major cliffhanger at the end of episode 4. It looks like she is going to have to put her theories to work to find out what is really happening and I’m assuming we will also start piecing together her missing memories to unlock those secrets.

I’m intrigued to find out how it all ends. As much as I want a happy ending for Carrie so that she can be reunited with Franny, it’s somewhat unlikely that both she and Saul will make it out of this alive. A sacrifice will most likely be made and I’m not sure that I am prepared for it just yet, but I’m confident that Claire Danes will continue to deliver extraordinary performances for the remainder of the season.

I can’t wait to find out how it all ends!

What are some of YOUR theories?

My performance of the week ending 2/29/20 on TV goes to…

Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper on The CW’s Riverdale.

I never get tired of watching my girl Betty Cooper stand her ground and fight for the ones she loves. She’s relentless, courageous, smart, and the one person I want in my corner if I ever get stuck in some kind of small town mystery drama.

**Please note some spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series.**

When I think about some of my all-time favorite shows on television, I think about my favorite characters and how much they have impacted me. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Holly Marie Combs as Piper Halliwell, and Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen come to mind. I can certainly add Lili Reinhart to this growing list now, as she continues to impress me again and again with her brilliant and inspiring performances.

Betty Cooper the CW

Betty Cooper has always been my character to root for against all odds and she is certainly in a tough spot right now, but she can use all the support she can get!

This is not the first time I have highlighted Reinhart’s performance as Betty Cooper and sometimes I feel like giving her the spotlight every single week because she deserves it. After watching season 4, episodes 13 and 14, there have been a lot of reveals and Betty is doing her best to bring down the annoying cronies from Stonewall Prep to clear her name and get justice for her beloved Jughead.

You would think that Betty might be feeling defeated or overwhelmed and yet she is somehow channeling all of her inner strength to keep fighting, refusing to give up. The Stonewall Prep cronies may be smart, but we know that Betty Cooper is way smarter and she will outmaneuver them somehow.

Donna better watch her back because the daughter of the Black Hood is coming for her. As Betty said, she is the “ultimate wild card” and my hero. Betty may be far from perfect and perhaps she takes things too far sometimes, but she has a big heart and is extremely loyal.

Betty can run circles around the adults in town and I know that she is about to channel her Carrie Mathison like theories to get to the bottom of everything, but I’m still hoping that we can somehow get a Bughead happily ever after.

What’s next for Betty? Well, quite a lot actually. Even though Betty has just set several pieces in motion, she now needs to sit back and wait for the Stonewall Prep cronies to make their next move. I’m confident that Betty will find a way to bring them to justice, but let’s hope that Archie and Veronica continue to have her back.

Charles seems to be an ally for now, but we know that he has a lot of secrets as well after visiting Chic in jail, so our girl needs to be extra cautious. Either way, I can’t wait to find out what happens next and I know that Betty will continue to light a fire until she can get to the truth.

Watch out Quill & Skull…Betty Cooper is coming for you!

My performance of the week ending 2/22/20 on TV goes to…

Cynthia Erivo as Holly Gibney on HBO’s The Outsider.

If you are a fan of slow burn mysteries, this show may be perfect for you, but I was not sure how I felt about it until Holly Gibney showed up, lighting the way to an intriguing story and some spine-tingling moments that still have me cringing.

Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Holly is so incredible and she is the BEST part of the series.

**Please note major spoilers have been left out for your convenience.**

The mystery behind The Outsider is dark and disturbing, as a hooded stranger seeps into the cracks of this small town with threatening and cryptic messages, along with some unspeakable acts. To make matters worse, he seems to be getting away with his unspeakable crimes, infecting people who essentially take the fall for his bad deeds. But, is this town capable of accepting a supernatural presence that defies all rational explanation?

The Outsider HBO 1

Well, one person is ready and willing to look deep into the depths of this mystery. Holly asks, “Can a person be in two places at the same time?” Everyone recognizes that it’s not possible, but when evidence says otherwise, Holly is willing to search every lead to get to the truth.

Even when the others don’t believe her or think that she is wasting their time, she continues to do her job, showcasing her extraordinary attention to detail. Seriously, if I needed a private investigator, I would want Holly on my case.

Every scene with Holly is so incredible, as you almost feel like you are right there along with her, trying to figure out the mystery. Holly is brave and resourceful as well, proving to be a worthy opponent that no one should underestimate.

The Outsider HBO 2

What’s next for Holly? Well, we know that the supernatural threat wants her out of the way, but I’m anxious to see how Holly will ultimately outsmart him. She has proven to be extremely perceptive and smart, but perhaps she needs some help. It’s time for someone else in town to have her back already!

Either way, I am extremely impressed by Cynthia Erivo’s performance and she never disappoints. Everyone on the show is incredible, but Erivo still stands out every single week. I’m not sure if I would have stuck around if not for her, which just goes to show you how much range she has as an actress. She pours her heart and soul out in every single role and she is so talented and believable.

I can’t wait to see what she does next!

My performance of the week ending 2/15/20 on TV goes to…

Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones on The CW’s Riverdale.

If you are fan of Riverdale, then you know that Jughead Jones is the heart of the series. His narrations shed so much light on everything and you really get to know him through his writing and his interactions with the rest of the characters. Cole Sprouse’s performance each week is believable and true.

**Please note some spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series.**

That being said, it makes it even more difficult to picture Riverdale without Jughead Jones and yet we are left trying to piece together the mystery behind his supposed murder. To make matters even worse, a lot of evidence is pointing at Jughead’s queen, Betty Cooper, which makes this even more shocking and heartbreaking for us Bughead fans.

Riverdale The CW 1

After watching season 4, episode 13, we finally catch up to that fateful night, but that doesn’t mean that we have solved the case just yet. Donna may have used a new trigger word on our girl Betty, but I have a feeling that this is all a set-up. I have to remain positive because I cannot even think about Betty being guilty under any circumstances.

In this past episode, Cole Sprouse really pulled out all the stops to make Jughead’s path toward potential demise so heartbreaking. As fans, we want to believe that there is some way for him to still be alive, creating a vortex of theories and questions to make sense of everything, but that’s part of the reason why I adore this show so much.

Sure, it may submerge itself in excess teen drama noir here and there, but the dark mysteries are so intriguing and compelling, luring you in that much more. Combine that with fantastic character dynamics and wonderful performances and you have more than a guilty pleasure on your hands.

What’s next for Jughead? Well, this might be the toughest one to figure out yet. Is Jughead really dead or is there some way to explain what has just happened? I can’t ignore the fact that we have been dancing around the plot of a “perfect murder,” so has Jughead truly cracked the case to somehow bring the real conspirators to light?

Riverdale The CW 2
Images courtesy of The CW

I have a lot of theories, but we know that Betty has connections with the morgue and their creepy doctor friend might have been able to make Jughead appear to be dead while Betty tries to bring the real culprits to justice, but how else can we explain what has happened?

For me, there is no show without Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper, so I’m hoping that the truth can salvage this ultimate duo. Lili Reinhart is always fantastic every single week, but I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with Cole Sprouse’s performance this past week.

Let’s hope he gets the chance to continue to shine by bringing down the real villains here. Go team Bughead!

My performance of the week ending 1/18/20 on TV goes to…

Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester on The CW’s Supernatural.

If you thought Jared was done shattering our hearts into a million pieces after winning your favorite male performance on television for two years in a row, think again!  Sam Winchester is starting 2020 off with a heart-wrenching performance that will continue to linger with you long after watching Season 15 episode 9, “The Trap.”

**Please note some spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series.**

Jared Padalecki has this brilliant way of bringing the fans in with charm and compassion.  He is so effective as Sam Winchester, making you truly think that he is your best friend.  He’s someone to root for against all odds and he wears his heart on his sleeve, which is not an easy thing to do when he is constantly facing angels, demons, and God.

Sam Winchester The CW 1

While all of the performances on SPN are always fantastic, there is just something about Jared’s portrayal of Sam that truly resonates with me.  His connection with God put him in danger and yet he still tries to hold on to that last sliver of hope, refusing to believe that there could be a world where Dean would ever give up.

Sam’s loyalty and courage make him a true hero.  Even though Chuck wants to believe that there is only one end to the Winchester story, there is no breaking Sam Winchester.  His dark trip to the future was revealing enough, allowing Chuck’s plan to work, but Sam is a fighter and he’s not going to give up without reaching into the deepest depths of his soul to make a difference.

Sam Winchester The CW 2

Sam has made so many sacrifices along the way and now he has to pass on a chance at romance with Eileen, but I have a feeling that all of Sam’s good work is going to pay off in the end.  When it comes to rooting for the good guys, Sam is the epitome of everything in this world that is worth fighting for.  Perhaps he should be taking care of the world rather than Chuck, keeping us all safe from monsters while showing love and understanding to others in need.

What’s next for Sam?  Well, we are pretty much back at square one now that Chuck is free, but Sam’s actions did matter, as Dean is the one to remind him that they will find a way.  Sam is the glue that keeps the Winchester family together and while it will be bitter sweet to say goodbye, I know that Sam is destined for great things.

My performance of the week ending 1/11/20 on TV goes to…

Marlo Kelly as Beth Cassidy on USA Network’s Dare Me.

There’s a new mean girl in town and she can already give Regina George and Heather Chandler a run for their money.  Throw in some over-competitive cheerleading, dark secrets, obsession, and a possible murder, and she may just be crowned the new Queen Bee.

**Please note spoilers have been left out for your convenience.**

Dare Me has aired two episodes so far and I am already completely captivated by Beth Cassidy, played brilliantly by Marlo Kelly.  While a lot of the other characters have potential as well, there is something almost magnetic about Beth. Her wide eye stares and dangerous actions make her a potential modern day femme fatale, but there’s also several layers beneath this tough appearance.

Beth clearly has a weakness for her best friend, but we all know that obsession can be a deadly game, especially when someone gets in her way.  While the cheesy montages are a little bit much, Marlo nails every scene with unsettling perfection.  This may be her break-out role because she is destined for stardom.

In addition, Beth clearly has some family issues going on.  Her father moved in with his mistress across the street and their daughter is also on the squad, which causes even more drama during games and practice.  Being on top of the pyramid is not just a privilege…it’s a necessity, and Beth is willing to take out the competition while keeping a smile planted on her face.

Beth is already set up to face off against our main protagonist, Coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald), but will she be able to put her personal agenda aside for the good of the team?  I personally am looking forward to more interactions between these two because the tension is intense.

Coach Colette French does not initially seem to be intimidated by Beth, but she is not an ordinary teenage girl.  There is clearly this jealousy and rage brewing inside of Beth, but she is able to appear so calm and in control on the surface.  Sometimes, that can be even more dangerous; however, as Beth even keeps certain secrets from her best friend, Addy.  Beth is manipulative and calculating and yet we can’t turn away from her.

Marlo Kelly fearlessly embraces this beautiful dark role with perfect poise.  She is a scene stealer for sure and the main reason why I keep coming back for more every single week.

What’s next for Beth?  Well, there is this mystery unfolding slowly week after week and you have to wonder if Beth is behind a possible crime, but is she the obvious choice?  Beth has already demonstrated that she is not afraid to break the rules to get what she wants, but how far will she go?

I can’t wait to find out!

My performance of the week ending 12/21/19 on TV goes to…

Paola Nuñez as Esme Carmona on USA Network’s The Purge season two.

The Purge season one was such a welcomed surprise last year and I wasn’t sure that a new group of characters would be able to live up to it, but Esme Carmona gave me someone to truly root for.  Paola Nuñez’s performance was inspiring, heartfelt, and powerful.

**Please note major spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series.

As soon as season two began, Esme immediately became my favorite character.  I thought it was so interesting that she worked for the NFFA, but had a moral compass.  The more secrets Esme uncovered, the more she was in danger, but her quest for the truth was truly inspiring.

We have seen members of the Resistance in the previous movies and season, but Esme’s transformation and discoveries as a part of the NFFA were truly unique, showing us just how corrupt the system was.  Esme could have easily stayed quiet, knowing full well what the NFFA was capable of, but she continued to take huge risks to get justice for those who were wronged by the system, including Professor Adams, who was very near and dear to her heart.

Once we glimpsed into Esme’s past, I was even more intrigued by her character.  Esme did not always follow the rules, but she fought for what she believed in and family and friendship were so important to her.  Esme’s dynamic with her sister was heartbreaking, which made the scene with her father that much more compelling and understandable.

During the season, I was really hoping that Esme would team up with Ryan and she did, which helped develop her character even more.  As Ryan and her grew closer, we got to see a softer side of Esme, making her even more likable.  Not too many characters tend to survive on Purge Night so I didn’t want to get my hopes up about these two, but I thought this gave Esme’s character even more layers and it made the season finale that much more shocking.

What’s next for Esme?  Well, not much if you watched the season finale, but that doesn’t mean that her actions were done in vain, as they actually inspired a Resistance movement.  Esme’s face was the symbol of this movement, as her friends refused to let society forget about who she was and what she stood for.

Nuñez was able to channel so much strength into Esme’s character.  I was captivated by her every single time she was on screen and I truly believed in her cause.  The quest toward truth and redemption is never an easy one, but Esme Carmona’s courage reminded us that our lives depend on it and we should keep fighting for answers one day at a time.

My performance of the week ending 12/14/19 on TV goes to…

Lizzy Caplan as Annie Wilkes on Hulu’s Castle Rock season 2.

As soon as I started season 2, I was completely mesmerized by Lizzy Caplan’s portrayal of Annie Wilkes.  Her performance was so real and compelling each week and she had this wild eyed stare that would certainly make Kathy Bates proud.

**Please note major spoilers have been left out for your convenience.

While this story of Annie Wilkes is not necessarily a prequel to Misery, it does provide us with some fun Easter Eggs throughout the season leading up to the season finale.  Lizzy Caplan is able to show off the psychotic sides of Annie with accuracy, but she also somehow makes this character real and sympathetic, as you start to root for her as an anti-hero on the show.

Annie’s darkness comes in and out, but her daughter, Joy, is her one shining light, constantly motivating her to be good and to be better.  While Annie may not be able to overcome the darkness within her ultimately, she continues to fight and struggle, which is no easy task, especially after we are introduced to a Salem’s Lot inspired group to shake things up.

I thought that from start to finish, Annie was such an intriguing character with many layers.  My favorite episode was “The Laughing Place” (season 2, episode 5).  I thought this particular episode was so interesting because we got to explore Annie’s past to understand her a little bit more, but her younger self was played by another actress, who somehow managed to be just as brilliant as Lizzy Caplan.  This really elevated her character that much more for me, as we continued with the rest of the season.

While the show started to get off track with some of the Salem’s Lot drama in later episodes, the end of the season was able to come full circle, allowing us to truly see Annie’s character development toward the character we all know in Misery, but the writers didn’t hit us over the head with this, which I appreciated.

Everything was subtle and well done, which really made me want to re-watch Misery that much more, but I also felt like I was introduced to a completely new side of Annie Wilkes, as her character came alive across the screen.

What’s next for Annie?  Well, it looks like we will be closing the book on her chapter for season 2, as we will most likely explore a new character/plot if Castle Rock is renewed for season 3, but I may have just become Lizzy Caplan’s “number one fan.”  She immersed herself into this role with disturbing perfection and I loved every minute of it!

My performance of the week ending 11/30/19 on TV goes to…

Christian Serratos as Rosita on AMC’s The Walking Dead.

**Nominated by Luke from QuizUp. Thanks Luke!**

When Christian Serratos was first introduced on TWD as Rosita, I thought she was strong-willed and stubborn with a guarded heart.  She was a bad-ass and someone I was always confident in to save the day.

Over the seasons, Rosita has not always gotten the spotlight she deserves, as her character became entangled in some interesting love triangles that seemed more like plot fluff.

When Rosita became a mother, I was really excited because I thought that this might bring us some new layers to her character.  Rosita has this spark within her and I have been waiting for it to light up the screen and it looks like it has finally happened!

**Please note spoilers are ahead if you are not up-to-date on the series.**

Christian Serratos’s performance in season 10 episode 8 was so real and heartbreaking.  Rosita puts the needs of her baby first, but I cannot possibly imagine what she was going through when she had to take down undead Siddiq.

Rosita has always put up a strong front previously and she channels some of her rage by playing Fight Club with the walkers outside the gates.  Rosita loses her cool a few times and ends up needing to be saved by Eugene, which is a wake-up call for her.

Rosita starts to realize that she may die, which never scared her before, but now she wants to be there for Baby Coco.  Rosita now wants to live more than ever and I could almost see the strength emerge within her eyes.  The grief and the heartbreak will still be present, but Rosita understands that she needs to keep fighting for herself and for her child.

We are finally seeing a lot of character development for Rosita, so I hope that this doesn’t mean that we may lose her.  TWD has a tendency to give us these brilliant moments only to brutally rip these characters away from us, but I’m going to continue rooting for Rosita.

She’s strong and resilient, but she is also now finally lifting the guard around her heart to let others in and to truly be there for her child.

What’s next for Rosita?  We’ll have to wait and see, but it looks like a potential romance with fan-favorite, Eugene, may not be too far off anymore.  While I kind of just want Rosita to get away from all of this romantic drama, I know that Eugene selflessly cares for both her and Baby Coco so I’m willing to give this a chance, but I want to see Rosita continue to fight and transform into the warrior I know she can be.

Either way, I am really happy with season 10 so far and part of that is because we are finally getting some worthy character development from characters who have previously taken a back seat in other seasons.

I can’t wait to find out what happens next in the second half of the season and I am beyond excited to witness Rosita’s journey even more!

My performance of the week ending 11/23/19 on TV goes to…

The cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia!

After just finishing up my watch of season 14, I have to give it up to:  Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito.

I was slightly worried that the new season might be a little bit stale, but the cast continued to keep things fresh, while we laughed our asses off.

I really enjoyed how the show used some fan-favorite nostalgia by bringing back some old characters and making references to past episodes, but they didn’t hit you over the head with them and that’s why they worked so effectively.

They always did something new and unique with the nostalgia, which really kept the entertainment going.  You never felt like they were just simply recycling old episodes, as things continued to take unexpected turns along the way.

I never get tired of watching this cast and you almost start to think that you are really part of the gang, as you witness each adventure.  The laser tag season 14 finale was done so brilliantly and it is probably one of my favorite season finales of the entire show.

Overall, season 14 had some highs and lows, but the gang kept my undivided attention and even surprised me with some new plots that were so fun and outrageous.

Stand out episodes for me include:  The Gang Chokes (season 14, episode 4), The Janitor Always Mops Twice (season 14, episode 6), The Gang Solves Global Warming (season 14, episode 7), and Waiting for Big Mo (season 14, episode 10).

From a fun take on film noir to a laser tag game with the theme from The Shining playing, you can’t go wrong in season 14!

What’s next for the gang?  We’ll have to wait and see, but I am always ready for some more crazy adventures from the gang.  You have to wonder how much longer this show will last, but it is still managing to provide us with laugh out loud entertainment each season and it is my absolute favorite comedy on television!

Stay tuned for a recognized performance on TV each week!
